Hossa has ‘upper-body’ injury … Canucks blueline getting thin … Polak has surgery … Latendresse out with bad groin
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 28th, 2010
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa left last night’s game in the 2nd period and didn’t return. Hossa suffered an upper-body injury and will be re-evaluated today.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks could be without another defenseman as Andrew Alberts did not practice yesterday after injuring his knee against the Avalanche, an MRI is scheduled for today. The Canucks are already without Sami Salo (Achilles), Keith Ballard (concussion) and Dan Hamhuis (foot). Hamhuis is still unable to skate.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins coach Claude Julian on Marc Savard and Marco Sturm, “More encouraging lately, but still a ways away. Don’t think you’ll see either 1[practicing] in the next week or so.”
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Toronto Maple Leafs winger Kris Versteeg is day-to-day with a back issue, but should ready to go tonight versus the Bruins.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Filip Kuba is expected to start practicing with the Ottawa Senators soon. He’s been skating on his own lately, as he’s recovering from breaking a non-weight bearing bone in his leg. Pascal Leclaire could be 4-7 days away from returning.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza skated on his own yesterday, but not with the team. He’s out for tonight, and has missed 4 games so far this season with the groin injury. They are hoping for a Saturday return.
- James Mirtle via twitter: St. Louis Blues defenseman Roman Polak will out indefinitely after wrist surgery. Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Polak will have the surgery today to repair a severed tendon in his right wrist. His wrist will be re-evaluated in 10-14 days to better establish when he could return.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild’s winger Guillaume Latendresse will be out tonight due to a groin injury.

Notes on Kovalchuk and the NHL’s investigation of contracts
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 11th, 2010
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kovalchuk’s mom thinks the contract with the Devils will be reworked before the start of the season, and that he isn’t panicking.
- ESPN: The Devils are working on another deal for Kovalchuk. “We want Ilya to be a Devil,” Lamoriello said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. “We will do everything possible to achieve that.”
- James Mirtle via twitter: Nothing from the Kings yet if the 15-year offer is still on the table for Kovalchuk. Mirtle thinks there is a small chance their in it.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: NHL ‘likely’ won’t penalize the Devils or Kovalchuk.
- Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy: Wyshynski puts together more notes on the Kovalchuk fallout. Bruins, Canucks cooperating, Flyers not happy.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Hammond thinks that Kovalchuk could sign a 1 year deal with the KHL or in the NHL, and re-visit free agency next summer.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: The NHL is looking into Marc Savard’s contract from a statement from the Bruins and Peter Chiarelli. Chiarelli met with the NHL back on Aug. 4th.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Brooks wonders how the NHL can investigate these contracts without a ‘systems arbitrator? “CBA says it can’t. Of course it doesn’t matter what’s in CBA.”
- Nick Kyreos via twitter: The contracts of Hossa, Pronger, Savard and Luongo have been continuously investigated by the NHL since they were registered.
- Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Could the Canucks be okay with Roberto Luongo’s contract being voided by the NHL? They wouldn’t be on the hook paying him until 2021-22, and there would competition where Cory Schneider could take over the number one at some point. A problem the Canucks could also face, is getting him under contract, and under the cap, given that his current cap hit would be $5.33 million, he’d want to sign for more than that.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Player agent, Kurt Overhardt, doesn’t think the NHL will void Luongo’s, or any of the other three contracts they are looking into. Overhardt felt that Bloch’s decision was ‘subjective’, that nothing in the document said they were in violation of the CBA. The other deals have already been registered by the league. “Any and all speculation that the league is going to claw back these other contracts … would be in complete violation of the collective bargaining agreement and it would be a complete infringement of the players’ rights under the CBA,” Overhardt continued. “Any attempt to do so would be absolutely predatory behaviour by the league, would be in bad faith and not in the spirit of the CBA.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: An agent has said the NHL won’t rip up the contracts of Pronger, Hossa, Luongo and Savard…
“The NHL isn’t going to do anything with these deals. Nothing is going to happen,” said the agent. “They’ve been trying to investigate most of these deals for a year.”
“I can tell you they certainly aren’t going to rip up a contract that has already been signed and approved by the league.
“That’s the difference: The deal that Kovalchuk signed was never approved by the league. The rest of these deals passed the smell test.”
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings haven’t been contacted by the league regarding the contracts of Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. “Last October or November, the league requested and we sent all the paperwork in about the negotiations,” Holland said. “Since the Kovalchuk thing, no one has said boo to us about it.”
Fallout from the Ilya Kovalchuk decision
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 10th, 2010
- Eric Macramalla of Offside: A Sports Law Blog: Provides a legal analysis of the Kovalchuk decision. Also provided the 20 page decision document.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Due to the Kovalchuk ruling; Roberto Luongo, Chris Pronger, Marian Hossa, and Marc Savard’s front loaded contracts could come under review. Mike Gillis confirmed that Luongo’s contract is under review by the NHL. Luongo signed a 12 year deal that will take him to the age of 43, where he’ll earn $1 million, down from the $10 million he’ll earn next season. Arbitrator Bloch wrote, “[Luongo] has a 12-year agreement that will end when he is 43. After averaging some $7,000,000 per year for the first 9 years of the Agreement, Luongo will receive an average of about 1.2 million during his last 3 years, amounting to some 5.7% of the total compensation during that time period.”
- Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy: It seems farfetched that the NHL could backtrack and nix the Marian Hossa deal, as he’s already a year into it. Pronger, Luongo, and Savard’s deals have all not started yet. Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg’s deals are also a year in.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The decision noted about Pronger’s, Luongo’s, Hossa’s and Savard’s deals; “Those players’ contracts are being investigated currently with at least the possibility of a subsequent withdrawal of the registration.” Agents are alarmed that some contracts are being investigated that are already in effect.
“I’ve never heard of a contract that had been registered and approved and then having that registration withdrawn,” said one agent, who requested to remain anonymous.
“The league has two months now to go after Savard, Pronger and Luongo [whose contract extensions began July 1]. Until they start getting paid, they’ve got two months.”
Lou Lamoriello confirmed that theyare in discussions with Kovalchuk’s agent. The Kings could also re-enter, they had a 15-year deal worth $80 million ($5.33 million cap hit) on the table before Kovalchuk signed with the Devils. The KHL is still an option, but a long shot.
- Adam Proteau via twitter: “if I’m a CHI or VAN fan, I’m praying contracts of Hossa & Luongo are voided.”
- A couple weeks ago we compared some of the long term contracts of the players noted above, take a look at their year-to-year breakdown.

Around the Boards: Bobby Ryan, Patrick Sharp a last resort, Hossa returns and DiPietro practices
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 25th, 2009
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Bobby Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks are far apart in their contract talks, and won’t be discussing anytime soon. Ryan had hoped to sign an extension before the season started, but Ducks management wanted to see if he could back up his rookie year with another solid year before committing long term, and probably the dollar amount he’s seaking.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBCSports: As an absolute last resort, the Blackhawks might have trade Patrick Sharp.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Marian Hossa will make his Blackhawks debut tonight, and will be lined up with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.
- Steven Marcus of Newsday: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro had a full practice yesterday, and barring any set back will return sometime next month after playing a few games in the AHL. Once he’s ready to return, the Isles will most likely look to trading one of their three NHL caliber goalies, with Martin Biron the most likley candidate.
Around the Boards: Phil Kessel, Sam Gagne, Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Elias Updates, Wisniewski Suspended
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 3rd, 2009
- Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Phil Kessel is expected to receive clearance from doctors this morning to make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kessel has been skating with Jason Blake and Matt Stajan. The problem I see with this line is that both Blake and Kessel like to shoot the puck a lot. It will be interesting to see how Stajan handles both shooters.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sam Gagne will be out of the Flyers lineup for 6-8 weeks after his hernia and abdominal surgery today. Though he definitely will be missed, it creates an opportunity for some of the Flyers younger kids to step up. Also, Daniel Briere hope to practice tomorrow, with the goal of playing on Friday.
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alexander Ovechkin is listed as wee-to-week with an upper body strain. Brooks Laich take Ovechkin’s spot on the line with Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Jonathan Toews is still not allowed to skate, no timetable on his return has been set. There’s a chance that Marian Hossa returns before November 25th.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Struggling Canadiens winger Andrei Kostitsyn has been demoted to 4th line. Kostitsyn has only 1 goal and 3 assists in 14 games, and received only 7:32 minutes of ice time on Saturday.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski was suspended for 2 games for his elbow on Shane Doan.
- Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger: Patrick Elias for the first time this season with the Devils and is eying a weekend return the lineup. He’ll give the Devils a much needed offensive jolt.
- Brian Mullen of the Nashville Tennessean: Shea Weber will be out the Nashville Predators lineup for 1 to 2 weeks.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Matt Pettinger signed on for his second stint with the Vancouver Canucks after inking a 1 year, 2-way, $500k contract.

- Jay Zawaski of Chicago Now: Marian Hossa has started skating with the Blackhawks, but is not expected to return until the end of November. They are also not going to rush Toews back.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The play of James van Riemsdyk and Matt Carle has moved them both into consideration for US Olympic team according Brian Burke.
- Scott Morrison of CBCSports.ca: The Detroit Red Wings might be starting to look at trading for a goalie as they don’t appear to be that happy with the play of both Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs top 2 goalies appear to be back healthy for the moment, but how they will fair remains to be seen. According to Burke, “If one of [Gustavsson or Toskala] doesn’t emerge as the guy or both of them, if they can’t emerge as a tandem, then we’re going to have to go look for a goaltender. We can’t fix the goaltending situation until we figure out what we have.”
Hossa Injured; Surgery Possible
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 22nd, 2009
Marian Hossa has a right rotator cuff injury that apparently happened during the playoffs while playing for the Detroit Red Wings. The severity of the injury is not known but surgery isn’t out of the question at this point.(source-ESPN Chicago)
The Chicago Blackhawks were aware of the injury when they signed Hossa, which makes the signing even more perplexing then it already was. The ‘Hawks finished 2nd in the Western Conference in goals for last season with 264, behind only the Red Wings with 295, and tied for 4th overall in the league with the Penguins. Although they did lose 29 goals when Martin Havlat left, the numbers suggest more skilled scorers wasn’t really what the ‘Hawks needed. When you consider the much talked about cap issues the ‘Hawks face, the Hossa signing will really hinder them when the time comes to sign Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.
The only point of view I can think of to put a little silver lining on this situation for ‘Hawks fans is that perhaps the injury happened early in the playoffs and can explain Hossa’s ineffectiveness in the finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the 7 game final series Hossa had a total of zero goals and 3 assists for the losing Detroit Red Wings and was mostly invisible.
It’s great to score 40 goals in 74 games during the regular season but at that rate he should have scored around 12 or 13 goals in the 23 playoff games he played in for Detroit. He recorded a total of 6 goals in the 23 playoff games for the ‘Wings. In fact, of those 6 goals none were game tying goals and only 1 was a game winner and that came all the way back in the second period of game 4 of the second round against The Anaheim Ducks, a 6-3 win to tie the series, not even an overtime goal.
That silver lining might be end up being sprayed on upon closer inspection, but if you consider that Hossa had 12 goals and 26 points the previous year in the playoffs while with the Penguins, there is reason to hope that a healthy Hossa could help push the Blackhawks to the next level.
I’m of the opinion that unless Hossa can play goaltender too the money could have been used more wisely.
