Garrioch and LeBrun have some NHL Trade Rumors for you
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on January 24th, 2010
- Hockey Night in Canada ‘Hotstove’ video
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- The Canucks might be one of several teams to have an interest in Paul Kariya.
- The Thrashers will take another run at re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flames are said to have inquired about him. This will come down to the deadline, with at least 6 teams involved; Flames Capitals, Blackhawks, Bruins, Kings and Rangers.
- The Leafs have inquired about Kovalchuk, but that may not mean much. “Burke likes to stick his nose into everything,” said one Eastern Conference-based player. “If he did that, it’s so he can tell everybody that he looked into the possibility.”
- Unless he takes less than the $6.3 million he making this season, Patrick Marleau may not be back with the Sharks next year, and the Kings might be interested.
- The Lightning have once again shot down rumors that they’ve talked to the Rangers about Vinny Lecavalier.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Tampa Bay owner, Oren Koules, is shooting down the Lecavalier to the Rangers rumors. Of note, Vinny is 15 in scoring before Saturday’s play.
- The Maple Leafs have let it be known that not only will they trade players for picks/prospects, they’ll also take on contracts for picks/prospects.
- Hurricanes Dman, Joni Pitkanen, is drawing a lot interest even though he still has another year on his contract at $4.5 million.
- The Coyotes are looking to add some scoring, without taking on much salary.
- The Islanders will move Martin Biron for a draft pick, defenseman or a left winger
- Eric Francis from Canoe Slam! Sports: Flames GM Darryl Sutter said that he has “no intentions of breaking any of it up.” He has been unhappy with the play of the team, and many of their top players aren’t playing like top players. Sutter will be patient with the team for now.
Around the Boards: Selanne out 2-6 weeks, Goalie dilemma in Nashville? Kings-Frolov to talk, Leclaire out after shot to head
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 15th, 2010
- Robyn Norwood of the LA Times: The Anaheim Ducks will be without Teemu Selanne for 2 to 6 weeks after surgery to repair 2 broken bones in his jaw after he took a puck in the face the other night. His participation in the Olympics is in question. He should be fully healed by the trade deadline day.
- John Glennon of the Tennessean: The Nashville Predators find themselves in a situation similar to the Montreal Canadiens, they have 2 free goalies (Pekka Rinne and Dan Ellis) who think they should be a number one goalie. The Preds have been rotating between goalies lately. They may be leaning towards keeping both goalies for the remainder of the season and then trade one before July 1st and at least receive some compensation. “I don’t see (a goalie trade) happening now, but if one of our guys was to play 15 games in a row before the deadline, or if there were injuries, problems or holes in another area we needed to fill … ” Poile said before the team left on its three-game swing.
- Rich Hammond of the LAKingsInsider.com: Hammond interviews GM Dean Lombardi. Lombardi has a meeting scheduled this month with Frolov’s agent. If they are unable to reach a deal by the trade deadline, they are still most likely going to hang on to him instead of trading for draft picks. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Frolov would be part of a package to bring a star, such as some guy playing in Atlanta.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Ray Shero has begun contract talks with defenceman Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang. I think it will be tough to fit both Gonchar and Letang under the Pens salary cap, unless both players sign for a friendly number.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire suffered a mild concussion at yesterday’s morning skate after taking a shot to the head. The Sens goaltender statistics rank among the worst, and sf the Sens begin looking for a goalie, expect to hear Martin Biron’s name come up. Same could be said for any team that might be in the market for a goalie.
- The Calgary Herald: The Flames would like to re-sign both Olli Jokinen and Rene Bourque. Jokinen would have to take a pay cut, and Bourque will be looking for a big raise as he’s having an excellent season. Some are saying Bourque could get in the neighbourhood of $4 million a season.
Around the Boards: Niedermayer Retiring a Duck, Sens looking for a Center, Wings continue to get healthier, New center for Kessel
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 12th, 2010
- Helene Elliot of the Los Angeles Times: Scott Niedermayer is going retire an Anaheim Duck, and not get traded at the deadline. According to Ducks GM Bob Murray “No. Scotty and I have been talking and he’s going to retire an Anaheim Duck. And that’s the way it’s going to be unless he tells me different. I have an agreement with Scotty and it’s my word. “We’ve talked about this. I see him staying here. Who knows, he might play next year.”
- Bruce Harrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray is looking to add a center, but no much is available at the moment.
- Dan Martin of the NY Post: Islanders GM Garth Snow is in no rush to trade his 3rd goalie, Martin Biron. That’s a smart move considering DiPietro’s history, he could get hurt in practice and be out for a year.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Happier times in Detroit with the all the potential returnees to their lineup lately. Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson could be back on Thrusday against the Hurricanes. Tomas Holmstrom is hoping to return on the 25th or 27th. Both Johan Franzen and Jason Williams are back skating.
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Phil Kessel has been in a 12 game scoring slump, and now the Maple Leafs have called up Tyler Bozak from the Marlies in an attempt to jump start Kessel. I think Bozak has the skill, speed and IQ to be a good center for Kessel, though I’m not sure if he’s ready just yet, time will tell. Bozak had 20 points in 32 game in the AHL, and battled the swine flu earlier in the season.
Around the Boards: Souray will waive ‘no-trade’ clause, Kovalchuk-Thrashers continue talks, Savard out 2-3 weeks
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 9th, 2010
- Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Sheldon Souray has let it be known that he’d be willing to waive his ‘no-trade’ clause if it ‘makes sense’ for his family. His family is out in California, so if he gets traded, expect it to be to a west coast/conference team. Souray has 3 years left on his contract at $5.4 million cap hit. He’s making $5.5 mill this year, and $4.5 mill the next 2 seasons.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers aren’t giving up on re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk.
On the ongoing contract talks with Ilya Kovalchuk, Waddell said: “Talks continue on. We met in Saskatoon (at the World Junior Championships). Our priority still remains to get him signed. We’ve made some progress but we are obviously not ready yet to put a signature on a contract.
“The positive thing is the talks have continued. They haven’t broken down. We talk almost daily. To me, that’s all part of the process. If talks break down because one side puts their shoes too far in the sand then you know you’re probably at an impasse. At this point, that hasn’t happened. Both sides continue to talk and try to find away to make this deal work.”
- Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne expects to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Changes could be coming for the Ducks if they continue to sit near the bottom of the Western Conference. JS Giguere, Scott Niedermayer, Saku Koivu, and Todd Marchant, could find themselves with another team before seasons end.
- Paul Hunt of the Toronto Star: Hunt lists some names who are unrestricted free agents this year that could be dealt at the trade deadline: Slava Kozlov, Colby Armstrong and Pavel Kubina (Atlanta), Saku Koivu (Anaheim), Paul Kariya (St. Louis), Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen (Carolina), Jeff Halpern, Antero Niittymaki and Alex Tanguay (Tampa), Martin Biron and Doug Weight (Islanders), Raffi Torres (Columbus), Steve Ott and Jere Lehtinen (Dallas), Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan, Lee Stempniak and Vesa Toskala (Toronto)
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are now allowed to negotiate with RFA Jonas Gustavsson, but have yet to do so. The Leafs don’t feel any pressure or urgency to get something worked out right away.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Boston’s Marc Savard could be out for 2 to 3 weeks with a sprained knee. The Bruins were stayed healthy last season, the same can’t be said for this year.
Around the Boards: Phaneuf trade rumors false says Sutter, Ribeiro out 4-6 weeks, Will take a 3rd for Biron
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 8th, 2010
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames GM, Darryl Sutter, put a squash to the internet trade rumor, that he was exploring trading defencemen Dion Phaneuf. “Everything is false,” said Sutter of the rampant speculation surrounding his 24-year-old blueliner. “Whoever makes up that stuff is not doing anything. We’ve worked really hard at building a top young defence in the league and our intention is to keep them, so that’s (rumours) just from somebody who didn’t have anything to do on that day.”
- By the AP on NESN.com: Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo has sent a letter to Gary Bettman, saying that he thinks that Boston should hold an annual outdoor game. He said this past game was an economic boon for the area, would solidify league base in the area, and would help grow the game in the Boston area.
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Andrew Cogliano has had his name in some trade rumors lately, mainly to the New York Rangers, but Staples thinks it would be a mistake to trade him.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: The cost of trading for Martin Biron is apparently a 3rd round pick. If the Islanders are able to get a 3rd round pick for him, it was definitely a good off-season signing (not looking at his 2-10-2 record). He was signed at a reasonable price, and getting a decent pick for 1/2 to 3/4 of a season, is nice move.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Not good news for Dallas Stars fans. Mike Ribeiro will lost for4 to 6 weeks after taking an accidental high stick to the throat. He had a tracheotomy to reduce the swelling to allow him to breathe easier.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader writes in to Molinari asking if the Penguins would trade Kris Letang this season for a scoring winger. Molinari doesn’t think so.
Around the Boards: Jeff Carter not going anywhere, Bruins looking for Scorer, Sabres still after Biron?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 27th, 2009
- CSNPhilly.com: Finally a sensible article regarding the Flyers. Jeff Carter will not be traded this year.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Stockpiled with plenty of draft picks and cheap young players such as Tuukka Rask, Blake Wheeler, Mark Stuart, and Matt Hunwick, the Bruins have plenty of trade chips for acquiring a top 6 scoring forward.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Still talk of the Buffalo Sabres trying to acquire Martin Biron from the Isles once DiPietro is deemed healthy.
- Hockey Night in Canada’s Hotstove Video
Around the Boards: Savard about to sign, Ovechkin hurts knee, DiPietro mid-Dec return, Gagne Skating
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 1st, 2009
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Marc Savard and the Boston Bruins could announce today that they’ve agreed to a 7 year contract extension with a cap hit in the $4.5 – $4.8 million range. Savard will be 39 when the contract expires. With a cap number that low, this deal will be front loaded for the first 5 or 6 years.
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin went knee-on-knee with Carolina’s Tim Gleason. More will be known at tests are performed today. OV was given a 5 minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct. I think the NHL might be investigating this hit, as it might be another reckless play by him.
- Steven Marcus of the Newsday: Rick DiPietro is eying a mid-December return to the Islanders, after completing a conditioning stint in the AHL. Martin Biron rumors should heat up over the next couple weeks, and look for the Isles to trade once DiPietro returns and they have faith that he’ll remain healthy.
- Jay Greenberg of the NY Post: The New York Rangers would love to add some scoring, but they handcuffed by some questionable contracts signed by Glen Sather. It still amazes me how Sather is still the GM of the Rangers.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Simon Gagne is back on skates earlier than expected after his abdominal surgery, but he’s not close to getting back into the Flyers lineup.
Around the Boards: Bobby Ryan, Patrick Sharp a last resort, Hossa returns and DiPietro practices
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 25th, 2009
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Bobby Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks are far apart in their contract talks, and won’t be discussing anytime soon. Ryan had hoped to sign an extension before the season started, but Ducks management wanted to see if he could back up his rookie year with another solid year before committing long term, and probably the dollar amount he’s seaking.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBCSports: As an absolute last resort, the Blackhawks might have trade Patrick Sharp.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Marian Hossa will make his Blackhawks debut tonight, and will be lined up with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.
- Steven Marcus of Newsday: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro had a full practice yesterday, and barring any set back will return sometime next month after playing a few games in the AHL. Once he’s ready to return, the Isles will most likely look to trading one of their three NHL caliber goalies, with Martin Biron the most likley candidate.
Around the Boards: Savard extension soon, Rangers-Habs talking? Keith odd man out?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 16th, 2009
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Bruins and Marc Savard are getting closer on a long term extension, in the $6-6.5 million range for 4 or 5 seasons.
- Stephan Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins are getting healthier, with Milan Lucic expected to return this week, and Marc Savard could be back next week.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Jonas Gustavsson will be an RFA at the end of the season, and there might be teams that would sign him to a $5 million offer sheet. Burke can’t negotiate with ‘The Monster’ until January.
- The Predators are trying to unload RWer Ryan Jones and his $975,000 contract.
- The Rangers and Canadiens have had talks involving Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn.
- The Oilers have inquired about Sergei Kostitsyn, a junior linemate of Sam Gagne.
- The Islanders will most likely trade Martin Biron once Rick DiPietro returns. The Kings or Sabres are possible destinations. I’d also think the Wings might be monitoring his play.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Hearld: The Blackhawks could be looking to trade for a 2nd line center to replace the injured David Bolland (out 3-4 months with back injury). Patrick Sharp could be moved into that role if a trade can’t be worked out. Hurricanes’ Matt Cullen and his $2.875 cap hit might be a fit if Bolland was placed on LTIR.
- Jay Zawaski of Chicago Now: With Toews and Kane possibly close to signing contract extensions; if they sign with a hometown discount, they might be able to keep Duncan Keith. If they re-sign for fair market value, Keith is probably gone.
Around the Boards: Habs Goalie Controversy, ANA-TO, EDM-TB Trades Coming? Wings Looking for Goalie?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 9th, 2009
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Stubbs outlines the Habs goalie controversy between Jarolsav Halak and Carey Price after a strange twist with Halak`s representative, Allan Walsh tweeting:
“Interesting stat of the night … Price is 10W, 32L in last 42 starts. Hmm.”
and later backtracked:
“It was a tongue-in-cheek comment not meant to be taken seriously, forgot it was Montreal and everyone loses a sense of humour,” he tweeted in reply.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Toronto Sun: The Tampa Bay Lightning might be looking to move Andrej Meszaros. Meszaros makes $4 million so it might be difficult to move him. Not many teams can afford a $4 million underachieving Dman. Though Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune states the Edmonton Oilers have been scouting the Lightning in their quest to find some defensive depth. The Hurricanes have struggled terribly this season and might be looking to get younger. Ray Whitney (no-move clause) and Joe Corvo might be on the block.Dallas is looking to a big forward. The Detroit Red Wings haven`t been that happy with the play of goalies Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard, and might be looking to bring someone in. Martin Biron maybe?
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Rick DiPietro is a few weeks away from returning, if he can stay healthy, Martin Biron will be on the move. As part of the deal with Biron signing with the Isles, it was put in place that he would be traded if/when DiPietro returned.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Zupke on Randy Youngman`s article, both are bringing up the JS Giguere to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a deal that would involve Vesa Toskala. Giguere would be a `mentor`for Jonas Gustavsson, and is under contract until next season, making somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 million. Toskala`s $4 million contract expires at the end of the season. The Ducks would love to get out of Giguere`s contract, as Jonas Hiller has taken over the #1 duties. I`m not sure if Toronto would want to bring in a $6 million backup goalie/mentor.
Morning Hits
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on July 23rd, 2009
Some morning NHL news and notes for Thursday June 23rd.
- Travis Zajac gets a 4 year, $15.55 million contract from the Devils and avoids salary arbitration. $2.75 million in 2009-10, $3.5 million in 2010-11, $4.5 million in 2011-12 and $4.8 million 2012-13. Not a bad deal for the 24 year old.
- Marty Biron gets a 1 year, $1.4 million deal from the Islanders. In shocking developements, Rick Dipietro still has knee problems and may not be ready for the beginning of the season. Dipietro will begin skating in August. Biron could become trade bait late on in the season if Dipietro is able to remain healthy.
- The Maple Leafs re-signed minor leaguers, Darryl Boyce (2 years) and Alex Foster (1 year). If you’re not a Leaf fan or from their hometown, you’ve probably never head of these guys. Last years Leaf backup, Martin Gerber, has signed a 1 year deal with a club in the KHL. The signing of ‘The Monster’, Jonas Gustavsson, meant the Leafs didn’t plan on bringing Gerber back.
- The Vancouver Canucks have added forwards Tanner Glass and Guillaume Desbiens, and Dman Mike Funk.
Biron Headed to Islanders
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on July 22nd, 2009
In a strange development the New York Islanders have signed Martin Biron as speculation is that Rick DiPietro isn’t ready to go again to start this season.(source-TSN)
Having already signed Dwayne Roloson on the July 1st free agency opening day, it seems that Garth Snow is hedging his bets regarding DiPietro’s health and lends even more credibility to our Top Ten Worst Contracts, where DiPietro is ranked #1.
