NHL Draft talk for Leafs, Blue Jackets, Coyotes, Rangers, and Devils … Head Coaching Positions in Ottawa and Minnesota

  • Mike Morreale of NHL.com: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke once again let everyone know he’d like to move up in the draft,

“We’re trying to move up, but haven’t had any luck yet … it’s still pretty early,” Burke said. “We own the 25th pick (from Philadelphia) and either a 29 or 30 from Boston (depending on the result of Stanley Cup Final), and we’re trying to package 39 and one of those first-rounders.”

“Making a draft deal is like farming,” Burke said. “You have to do a lot of work before you harvest anything. You can’t just show up at the Draft and say ‘OK we’re making this deal.’

“You’ve got to lay it out for all the teams ahead of you so they understand exactly what you’re prepared to do. But it may happen on the floor. If a team feels a player isn’t there where they want him, they’ll maybe turn to us and say, ‘Now we want to do that deal.’ So if you don’t do all the groundwork before you get there, there’s no chance of making the right deal, so we’re doing all the spade work now.”

  • Adam Kimelman of NHL.com: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson may be interested in moving their 1st round pick, if they keep it, their take the best player available.
  • “Possibly we’d look to move the pick — even for a player, if we could,” Howson told NHL.com. “We’re open for anything. I don’t think it’s likely we’d move up, more likely we’d either make the pick or move back or perhaps trade it for a player.”

  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: The Phoenix Coyotes are interested in trading their 1st round pick (#20) and one of their 2nd round picks to move up in the draft.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: The Rangers traded their 2 2nd round picks for Tim Erixon, and may look to move down from #15 at the draft.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: “There’s also a growing sentiment that there will be more players under contract traded for picks on draft day because cap is going up.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The Devils have looked at a range of 15 players for the #4 pick at the NHL draft and will continue to narrow it down. Jonathan Huberdeau, Gabriel Landeskog, Ryan Strome, Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Murphy were invited do some extra testing after scouting combine ended. There has also been talk that they could be interested in Mika Zibanejad but he may be a stretch at #4.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators coaching search is coming to an end. Paul MacLean (Red Wings), Kirk Muller (Canadiens), Craig MacTavish, Dave Cameron and Gerard Gallant have all been interviewed. Kurt Kleinendorst will be interviewed after the AHL final. They hope to have their coach named by the draft on June 24-25.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Craig MacTavish has had multiple discussions with Wild GM Chuck Fletcher about vacant head coaching position in Minnesota. Fletcher has also talked to Paul MacLean, Gerard Gallant, Michel Therrien, Kirk Muller, and would like to talk to Mike Yeo of the Houston Aeros (AHL). The Oilers need to add ‘team toughness” according to GM Steve Tambellini. Martin Gerber didn’t sign a deal with a Swedish team as rumored, he could retire. They may not re-sign Alex Giroux despite being 2nd in AHL scoring last year. The Oilers have 14 players under contract for next year, and could have close to $25 million in cap space.

Iginla at ease … Wild wanted Yzerman last year … Burke scouted Hawks-Ducks … Ducks sticking with 8 Dmen

  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leopold had hoped to convince Steve Yzerman to be teams GM after Doug Risebrough was fired after the 2008-09 season. The Oilers could look to trade Dustin Penner before the trade deadline as he’s struggled and lacked passion this year.
  • Kevin Paul-Dupont of the Boston Globe: Brian Burke was seen scouting the Chicago Blackhawks – Anaheim Ducks last Sunday. Burke has done deals with both teams in the last year. I don’t see that either team has top center that they’d be interested in dealing.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Ducks have 8 defenseman on their roster, and may go against the norm, and keep all 8. “It’s proven you need defensemen because you get (injuries). Look at our schedule. We’re going to need players.”
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Kings power play has gone 1 for 15 in their last 4 games, coach Terry Murray is considering switching Jake Muzzin for Peter Harold.

Oilers Sheldon Souray and Martin Gerber clear waivers

  • TSN: It wasn’t much of surprise that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray cleared waivers today. No team wanted to put in a claim and assume the entire contract.

Goaltender Martin Gerber also cleared waivers and will likely be sent to their AHL club in Oklahoma City. There was thought that the Minnesota Wild might put in a claim.

What the Oilers do next with Souray is the big question. They’ll most likely not want to send him to their AHL in fear of the possible ‘negativity’ he might bring. Putting him on re-entry waivers is another option, with each team absorbing half the contract and cap hit, $2.25 million and $2.7 million respectively. Ideally the Oilers would like to trade him and not be on the hook for any of his contract.

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: NY Rangers GM Glen Sather might have an interest in Souray if he’s placed on re-entry waivers. The Oilers are reluctant to place Souray on re-entry. Another issue that may hamper the Rangers chances of getting him on re-entry is that the Rangers sit at #10 on the waiver wire priority list, the Columbus Blue Jackets sit at #4. Souray still has to get through re-entry waivers if the Oilers are able to get a trade worked out.
  • Jim Kelly of the SI.com: The NY Islanders could be another team interested in Souray if he’s put on re-entry waivers. Columbus is ahead of Islanders in waiver wire priority.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: “Three league executives believe the only hope for Edmonton on Souray: Someone claims him on re-entry.”

Kadri will be sent down to the Marlies … Ryan back on LW … O’Brien odd man out? Fowler makes Ducks, for now?

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: According to Shoalts, the Toronto Maple Leafs made the decision awhile ago that Nazem Kadri will be heading to the Marlies. Kadri’s 3 point night against the Senators didn’t change anything, nor would a solid effort tonight. Kadri has been outplayed by Tyler Bozak and Mikhail Grabovsky, and is not suited for the 3rd line roll. Tim Brent holds the upper hand over John Mitchell for the 3rd line center position, with Christian Hanson locked in on the 4th line.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: By the end of the weekend, the Maple Leafs roster will be down to 23. Kadri looks to be in for an AHL-NHL season.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Shane O’Brien will make $1.6 million this season, and because Andrew Alberts will $1.05 million, he may get the nod over O’Brien. The Vancouver Canucks are $3 million over the cap, and if they decide to carry 7 defenseman, one will be on the move. When Sami Salo returns mid way through the season, another D will have to be moved. O’Brien, Alberts and Aaron Rome are battling for 6th spot. Rome makes $750,000, so most likely isn’t going anywhere. Coach Vigneault complimented Alberts play so far, and was luke warm towards O’Brien.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said that they are still unsure if they will carry 21 or 22 players to start the season (23 is the max).
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: The Bobby Ryan experiment at center may be over as coach Randy Carlyle had him back on left wing with Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne yesterday at practice. For the time being he’ll play on the left side.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: After waiving 2 more defenseman yesterday, the Anaheim Ducks are down to 7 healthy defenseman. So it appears, for at least the time being, that 2010 1st round draft pick Cam Fowler will start the year with the team. It looks like he’ll be with the team for at least the first 9 games of the season.
  • Michael Russo via twitter: If the Minnesota Wild put in a claim on Martin Gerber (will know today), he’ll earn $500,000 in the NHL, $200,000 in the AHL and a $15,000 claiming fee.
  • QMI Agency, Toronto Sun: Quebec City is moving ahead with their $400 million arena project, despite only have commitment for 55% of the funding. The Federal government haven’t said yet if they’ll contribute the remaining 45%.

Selanne not with Ducks yet … Ducks and Kariya talking? … Some Wild talk

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: The deal hasn’t been finalized for Chris Chelios to take a front office position with the Red Wings. He also has a similar offer from the Blackhawks, and possibly a “huge KHL offer”.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Reports that Teemu Selanne has signed with the Anaheim Ducks are a little premature. He’s close to a desicion, but nothing official yet. Selanne is pitching the Ducks and Paul Kariya for another reunion. “I’ve talked to Paul and the Ducks,” Selanne told the publication. “Paul has been waiting for my decision and I hope things move forward.”
  • Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: According to Oilers assistant GM, Rick Olczyk, the rumors are false that they are looking for a loophole to get out of Nikolai Khabibulin’s contract. The signing of Martin Gerber had nothing to do with the possibility that Khabibulin could be sentenced to prison, “It had nothing at all to do with that,” Olczyk said of Khabibulin’s impending trial on extreme DUI charges in Scottsdale. “He had a tremendous year in the KHL and we needed to fill a void. We felt it was the right move and the right player at this particular point in time. It has nothing at all, and I’d like to stress that, it has nothing to do with Khabby.”
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Russo’s initial thought after the Wild signed John Madden was that it was the end of James Sheppard, but maybe not according to GM Fletcher, “Not necessarily at all. The performance of players in training camp will determine what we do.” Pierre-Marc Bouchard will start skating soon in Montreal. Fletcher doens’t much else happening for the Wild this offseason, he not actively pursuing anything.
  • Ansar Khan of Mlive: The Red Wings are one of six teams interested in Willie Mitchell, but that number could shrink when dollars are discussed according to Mitchell’s agent.

Morning Hits

Some morning NHL news and notes for Thursday June 23rd.

  • Travis Zajac gets a 4 year, $15.55 million contract from the Devils and avoids salary arbitration. $2.75 million in 2009-10, $3.5 million in 2010-11, $4.5 million in 2011-12 and $4.8 million 2012-13. Not a bad deal for the 24 year old.
  • Marty Biron gets a 1 year, $1.4 million deal from the Islanders. In shocking developements, Rick Dipietro still has knee problems and may not be ready for the beginning of the season. Dipietro will begin skating in August. Biron could become trade bait late on in the season if Dipietro is able to remain healthy.
  • The Maple Leafs re-signed minor leaguers, Darryl Boyce (2 years) and Alex Foster (1 year). If you’re not a Leaf fan or from their hometown, you’ve probably never head of these guys. Last years Leaf backup, Martin Gerber, has signed a 1 year deal with a club in the KHL. The signing of ‘The Monster’, Jonas Gustavsson, meant the Leafs didn’t plan on bringing Gerber back.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have added forwards Tanner Glass and Guillaume Desbiens, and Dman Mike Funk.
