- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Taylor Hall’s season is over as he’ll be out 8 weeks with a high ankle sprain he suffered in a fight with Derek Dorsett. Hall was sitting in 3rd spot for most points by a rookie with 42, Jeff Skinner has 47 and a Logan Couture has 44. “He punched me and I dropped my gloves and I said to him, ‘Really?’ ” Dorsett said yesterday, “I’m not going to let him pound on me even if he’s the first overall pick (draft). He’s a big strong kid, too.”
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Murphy thinks (hasn’t been told anything) that Marc Savard’s hockey career is done. He see’s him attempting a comeback and then hanging them up.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Colton Orr is out with a suspected concussion, and Brian Burke doesn’t know if he’ll be able to return this year. Orr has been out since Jan. 20th. “We have not been given a timeline for Colton’s return,” general manager Burke said in an e-mail. “He will not be permitted to play until cleared by the doctors.”
- Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald: Tomas Vokoun gave the Panthers a list of 3 teams he would have waived his no-trade clause for at the deadline, but the Panthers never approached him. The Panthers will not offer any contract extensions during the season.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko won’t be play playing in North America this year. He’s still out with a shoulder injury. He will be meeting with team doctors, and will likely be signed to an entry level deal. The Blues are only able to recall one more player this season from the minors after they recalled Ian Cole.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel: The Panthers will likely look to bring Marty Reasoner back next season. Rostislav Olesz is owed just under $12 million in the next 3 seasons and will be hard to move.
- Trevor Gillies was suspended for 10 games for his hit on Cal Clutterbuck

- Howard Berger via twitter: Kypreos said the only city Stephen Weiss would waive his no trade clause for would be for Toronto. Berger thinks they would have to give up a 1st round and Nazem Kadri. Andy Strickland via twitter: Stickland wonders if the Leafs would include Grabovski for Weiss. Grabovski and Tyler Bozak have been discussed. Darren Dreger via twitter: At the moment the Leafs are planning on making an offer, though that can change.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Several teams are interested in Clarke MacArthur, but they’re likely to keep him.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Leafs could get John-Michael Liles cheap if Avalanche decide to salary dump.
- Matthew Barnaby via twitter: Teams calling Sabres about Tim Connolly, but not really available and they are not shopping him.
- Seth Rorabaugh via twitter: Penguins have about $4 million in salary cap space. Rob Rossi via twitter: Penguins looking for depth, but price this morning is high. Panthers looking for high pick for Marty Reasoner, price has to come down if Penguins make a move for him.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Joni Pitkanen was in the rumors at last year’s deadline too, but wasn’t a UFA. GM Jim Rutherford did say that anything can change with a phone call.
- James Mirtle via twitter: If the Thrashers decide to trade Zach Bogosian, will require a very good young forward in return. Mirtle will be surprised if he’s moved. Mike Brophy via twitter: Atlanta source said Bogosian is not in play today.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Senators would love to move Filip Kuba and his $3.7 million salary.

Sunday Morning NHL Rumor Roundup – Part 2

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:The Kings are targeting in order: Brad Richards, Ales Hemsky, and David Booth. Richards is complicated deal as he is out with a concussion with no timetable, and has a no-trade clause. The Rangers are also interested in Richards. A source it would likely be a Monday deal, if at all. The Stars have made a contract offer to Richards yet, but could do so on Sunday night. The Oilers won’t move off of Brayden Schenn in a Hemsky deal.On Sidney Crosby: “Sidney is still not symptom-free,” his agent, Pat Brisson, told ESPN.com on Saturday. “We have to go a day at a time. Anyone in the media speculating that his season is over is jumping the gun. No one knows. That’s the truth. All we know is that we have to be extremely cautious.”
Chris Phillip’s name came up in a Canucks-Senators call but didn’t go very far.
The Avalanche may not be looking looking to move John-Michael Liles. Maple Leafs interested if they do. The Leafs and Clarke MacArthur have had contract talks but not close as of Saturday. Teams are calling about him.
The Predators and Shea Weber have had serious contract talks. They need to lock him up.
Detroit will not put a claim on Ty Conklin.
The Blackhawks looking at adding a Dman.
Capitals thought that picking up Marco Sturm for offensive help was a good idea as they didn’t have to give up anything.
The Coyotes are looking for defensive depth.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:New Buffalo Sabres owner, Terry Pegula, has given GM Darcy Regier the green light to spend to the salary cap, so don’t be surprised if they go after Brad Richards or Paul Stastny. Garrioch believes pretty much everyone on the the Avs roster is available, including Stastny despite what they are saying. Regier would have to compete with at least the Leafs and Kings on a top center. Stastny would likely cost 2 top prospects and a top pick.Kings GM Dean Lombardi (accused tire kicker) is under pressure to make a big move. Brayden Schenn is a non-starter in Ales Hemsky talks, and the Oilers don’t really want to trade Hemsky. Lombardi will either cave in an pay a big price for Brad Richards or Ales Hemsky, or will add to his reputation as being afraid to make a big deal.
The Dallas Stars are still unsure what the next move Brad Richards wants to take. The Rangers and Leafs are interested.
Joni Pitkanen is likely staying in Carolina as they’re still in the playoff race.
Canucks looking at Panthers Marty Reasoner.
The Avalanche will likely ask John-Michael Liles to waive his no-movement clause.
There was some talk that the Red Wings could look at Tomas Vokoun, but they don’t have the salary space. They appear confident that Chris Osgood will be back and okay.
The Blue Jackets are getting calls for Jakub Voracek and Derrick Brassard but they don’t really want to move them. They deny it, but apparently they have been shopping Steve Mason.
Sunday Morning NHL Rumor Round Up – Part 1

- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Senators and Chris Phillips will continue to talk today, both sides will need to figure out if the gap can be closed. If it’s decided that he won’t be re-signing, options are for him to waive his no trade clause, or finish out the year with the Sens. Garrioch thinks it’s going to be an 11th hour decision. Darren Dreger adds that if the Senators offer just over $3 million for 3 years, Phillips would take it.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: From a Dean Lombardi (Kings GM) text, “Brayden Schenn is not going anywhere,” The Kings are still looking at Ales Hemsky and Brad Richards. Andrei Loktionov who was possible trade bait injured his shoulder and could be done for the year. The Colorado Avalanche told the Calgary Sun that they won’t trade Paul Stastny. Adam Foote and Milan Hejduk will be staying as well. Canucks GM Mike Gillis confirmed that he won’t be trading Cory Schneider or Cody Hodgson. He’ll be looking for a 3rd-4th liner, not a defenseman, John Maddon isn’t a fit due to salary. The Flames are looking for a depth defenseman. Agent Pat Brisson on Sidney Crosby, “We don’t know if it’s two weeks, two months or five months.” Jim Vandermeer and Ladislav Smid are more likely to move than Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: “Take it for what it’s worth… but Kings GM Dean Lombardi says he won’t trade Brayden Schenn.”
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek thinks it’s doubtful that the Lightning put a claim on Ty Conklin.
- Detroit Free Press: ESPN reported that there was some chatter that the Red Wings were interested in Zach Bogosian. Wings GM Ken Holland said he has never talked to Atlanta.
- Daniel Tolensky via twitter: Tolensky is surprised that Patrick Elias rumors haven’t come up at all, and that he’d look good beside Kopitar.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Pagnotta thinks the Canadiens will try to re-sign Andre Markov, Josh Gorges, and James Wisniewski.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Pagnotta thinks that Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is doing his best to make a ‘big splash.’
- Jim Morris of the Globe and Mail: The Canucks won’t be making a big deal. “I don’t think we have any glaring deficiencies,” Gillis said Saturday, “We think we did a fairly good job and our record seems to indicate we’ve done a good job. Sometimes at the trade deadline you simply don’t have the opportunity to do things. If there is something we can do to improve our team now, it if comes our way and it makes sense, we’re going to do it.” They may look to add one of Marty Reasoner (FLA), Rob Niedermayer (BUF), Chris Neil (OTT) or Cody McLeod (COL).
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel: Fialkov thinks that the Panthers will look to re-sign Marty Reasoner, and that Stephen Weiss could be the next captain.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames winger Niklas Hagman has the flu but should be good for today. Tim Jackman has an upper body injury from a fight with Ryane Clowe and is day-to-day. Daymond Langkow is progressing and is taking part in light workouts.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has a lower body injury and will need to be reevaluated.

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards skated for the 1st time since Feb. 13th yesterday.
“He skated today, and I haven’t heard anything else besides that,” Crawford said. “I think the news is good on him, and let’s hope the news continues to be good. You hope we get another shot in the arm with the return of Brad and the return of Nick Grossman (at some point). You just have to be patient, because those are injuries where you just have to do what the medical people tell you.”
Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has talked to Richards about the possibility of a trade, and both understand each other. “It’s a complicated process and there is a lot to consider, but we believe we’re prepared for all possibilities,” Nieuwendyk said. “There is so much speculation out there, but it’s not coming from our side. The bottom line is we are on the same page and Brad understands what we are doing.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is not an active seller these days, and there have not been as many scouts attending Oilers games lately. He’s fine if they don’t make any trades by the deadline. There were 6 scouts watching the Oilers-Wild game (2 from the Blackhawks, 2 from the Rangers, and 1 from the Capitals and Thrashers). In Denver, one scout (Martin Lapointe from Chicago) watched them again, maybe looking at Jim Vandermeer. A scout from the Kings and Penguins was also at the Colorado game. For a Hemsky to LA deal, they may be able to get at least a 1st, 2nd, and a top prospect like Colten Teubert or an NHLer in Wayne Simmonds. Ladislav Smid is getting interest the Predators.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks may be in the market for a 3rd/4th line center, and should take a look at Panthers center Marty Reasoner. Reasoner is 54.5% in the faceoff circle, and kills penalties. He could be had for a likely a late round pick, several teams could be interested.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks are on the lookout for a defenseman, and may have targeted Lightning’s Brett Clark according to his sources. Clarke carries a $1.5 million cap hit, is under contract next season, and may require them to give up a forward off their roster. The ‘Hawks could also be looking at Ladislav Smid and Jim Vandermeer according to Jim Matheson.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: “Our team has put itself in position to challenge for a playoff spot,” Howson said yesterday. “We want to try and help if we can; we want to try to add to the team.” They need a playmaking center and power play quarterback. Howson says he’s “one of 25 buyers.” The Blue Jackets have inquired about Brad Richards. Steve Weiss and Tim Connolly could be available, Connolly more affordable. John-Michael Liles could be the top Dman available but he has a limited no-trade clause, and the Blue Jackets are not on his list of preferred teams. Also available are Bryan McCabe (no-trade), Joni Pitkanen (‘Canes still in 8th), and Dennis Wideman. Howson may prefer not to disrupt team chemistry, may have to part with 1st rounder or Nikita Filatov. Canadiens, Kings, and Penguins have inquired about Rostislav Klesla.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs may be looking to do one more deal, with Burke talking to up to 5 teams about a defenseman. He’s not close to anything.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: John-Michael Liles will earn $4.5 million next season with a $4.2 million cap, and the Leafs maybe trying to get him cheap. They may have offered the 3rd round pick they got from the Versteeg deal. The Leafs have been talking to Clarke MacArthur, he may be asking for a 3 year, $9 million deal. If they can’t re-sign MacArthur they may look to move him. Would the Canucks or Kings be interested? Cody Hodgson could be in play for the Canucks. Burke could also be interested in Stephen Weiss and David Booth from Florida. The Leafs could get in on Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky. The problem for the Leafs could be what to give up for these guys.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The NJ Devils are on a 16-1-2 run, and Jason Arnott must decide by Sunday night whether to ask for a trade or remain with the Devils in hope that they can continue to push for the last playoff spot. “Yeah, it does change it. We’re getting closer to the playoffs. It’s going to probably be a tough decision when Sunday comes around,” Arnott said today after practice in Brandon. “I’m sure the next few games will tell a little bit more.

Rumored Avalanche-Kings deal … Rangers turning to McCabe … Canadiens after Penner, others … Richards not interested in Leafs

- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche now have 5 centers (Duchene, Stastny, McClement, O’Reilly and Dupuis), with Matt Duchene getting close to returning, he’s expected to practice today. Dater expects one of them to be traded by the deadline, with Duchene likely being the only one that would be on the ‘untouchable’ list. Dater has heard a few rumors regarding Paul Stastny including, “Stastny, TJ Galiardi and maybe a pick/another player to Los Angeles for Jack Johnson, Jonathan Bernier and Jarret Stoll.” Dater adds, “This is a blog, so I am NOT reporting that as a fact, or, again, something I have great confidence in.” Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Berstein can’t see that rumored deal happening. David Pagnotta via twitter: He’s hearing that the Avalanche could be pulling off another big deal, lots of chatter coming from there.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Marian Gaborik was forced out of yesterday’s game with a concussion. Coach Tortorella said that Gaborik complained intermittently for a week for not feeling well, but didn’t miss any time. It might change the interest Gaborik was getting leading up to the trade deadline. The Kings were rumored to ask about him. As to the extent of his concussion, it’s not known yet.
- Mark Spector via twitter: The Rangers have turned their attention to Bryan McCabe after one last discussion about putting a claim in for Sheldon Souray.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Indications are that the Blue Jackets won’t be putting a waiver claim on Sheldon Souray. Darren Dreger via twitter: One team that was interested in Souray, no longer is.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are pushing for Dustin Penner and others, Alex Kovalev could be a last resort.
- Marc Antonie Godin via twitter: The Canadiens were making a play for Chris Stewart before he was traded to the Blues.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Brad Richards supposedly told a Tampa source that his first choice is to remain with the Stars. His other choices would be to return to the Lightning or to the Rangers, and hinted he may have some interest in Carolina. “When asked about Toronto, he apparently said nothing but shook his head.”
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from an agent and Penguins source that the asking price for Ales Hemsky is “huge.” “At least first round pick and a player off the NHL roster, probably more.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (Q & A) Heika doesn’t think the Stars were in on any Tomas Kaberle talks as the Lenders may not want to add more than a $1 million in salary to this year’s payroll. He’s being to think the Stars won’t do much at the trade deadline. Heika thinks that Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has to listen to all offers for Brad Richards. If Richards waived his no trade clause “it would be because Joe asked him to.” If he reaches free agency, Richards would likely chose the team he felt he had the best chance to win the cup.
- Mark Spector via twitter: Spector notes the Flyers are still not sold on their goaltending.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If Sharks defenseman Marc-Eduoard Vlasic’s upper-body injury is serious, they could be looking to add another defenseman. They are not saying much on Antero Niittymaki, so they may need a backup goalie. With Stars forward Jamie Benn still out with a shoulder injury, it lessens the chances of James Neal being dealt for an offensive defenseman.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Leafs GM Brian Burke has cleared more cap space, and is looking to add a defenseman before the deadline.

Dustin Byfuglien being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers

TSN: The Chicago Blackhawks in the process of trading Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager and Akim Aliu to the Atlanta Thrashers for a 2010 1st round pick (#24), a 2010 2nd round pick (#54), Marty Reasoner and Jeremy Morin.
The deal is pending league approval, officials are en-route to LA for the draft.
We’ll update if there are any new details once it’s official.
“It is believed that the Thrashers would exceed the NHL’s 50 contract limit with this trade and would need to offload a contract before the trade can be approved.”
