- Bob McKenzie of TSN: There is some talk around the league that Stars forward Brenden Morrow “may” become available before the trade deadline. The Stars are in 10th spot, but only 3 points out and have played less games. Morrow has a no-trade clause and one more year left with a $4.1 cap hit. The Stars won’t aggressively shop him, but contenders could target him. If the Stars could get a nice young package for him, and if he’d agree to it, they would have to consider it. A Stars source said they’re “probably not” going to trade him. One team executive heard:
“Morrow might be available” and “we certainly intend to find out if he is.”
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Gordon lists some players that “could actually impact the playoff races”: Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin, Antoine Vermette, Andrei Kostitsyn, Martin Havlat, Mason Raymond, Evgeni Nabokov, Luke Schenn, Tim Gleason, Antero Niittymaki, Hal Gill, and Marek Zidlicky.
- Roger Hensley of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: If the Blues need to add a proven scorer is a tough question to answer. Will they be fine when Alex Steen and Andy McDonald return from injury? There may not be a lot of legit scores that are available, and what would be the cost to get one? If Steen and McDonald return, Hensley doesn’t think they need to bring in scoring help, but if they don’t, they may need to explore some other options.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur has said he’s having fun this year and is leaning towards coming next year. Chere notes that Zach Parise won’t be dealt at the trade deadline, but the odds of him re-signing with them are 50-50.
- Jason Botchford in the National Post: Canucks forward Mason Raymond has battled his way back from a broken back this year, but he hasn’t been producing and could find his days in Vancouver numbered. He’s well liked, a good penalty killer, has good wheels, but has only scored 33 goals in his last 171 games.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Ducks Jason Blake is getting some trade interest. Botta notes that the Ducks got better when he returned from injury.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: If Ducks Jason Blake is available, Sassone thinks he’d look good as the Blackhawks 2nd line center. He wonders if Bob Murray would trade with Stan Bowman. (I don’t think Blake has played center at any point in his NHL career)
- John Wawrow (AP) in the Globe and Mail: Gary Bettman says there are 3 groups that are showing “serious” interest in the buying the Coyotes that would keep the team there. One of the groups is led by former Sharks president and CEO Greg Jamison and the other is Jerry Reinsdorf.
“We’re going to try to avoid a move of the Coyotes, but if we don’t sell the club, I’m not sure that this won’t be the last season here,” he said.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators captain on Daniel Alfredsson on playing next year:
“The way this season is going, if I’m still healthy after this season, I’m hoping I can go one more,” said Alfredsson. “This year has been so good. If we can make the playoffs, that would almost be a dream come true.”
- David Pollak via twitter: The Sharks have traded defenseman Sean Sullivan to the Panthers for Tim Kennedy.

- TSN: Kyle Turris is expected to make his season debut with the Coyotes tonight against the Jets.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green has skated 4 of the last 5 days, but there is still no timetable on his return. He’s missed 9 straight games with a strained groin muscle.
“I’d like to be back tomorrow but that’s not going to happen,” Green said. “It’s just kind of a day-to-day thing, there’s no set schedule. It’s just me getting back into shape and making sure that I’m 100 percent healthy if not 90 percent at least.
“As far as game shape with being explosive,” Green added, “I still have some strengthening to do, who knows how long that will take.”
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames defenseman Mark Giordano was put on the IR and will be out at least 7 days. He suffered a hamstring injury after blocking a shot on Tuesday.
- Josh Rimer via twitter: Jim Rutherford: “Tomas Kaberle better pick up his game or he won’t be in Carolina Long!”
- Gord Stellick via twitter: If Brian Burke was hired by the Maple Leafs 6 months earlier, his choice for head coach would have been Joel Quenneville rather than Ron Wilson.
- Mike Harrington via twitter: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller hasn’t been ruled out for this weekend by Lindy Ruff. Tyler Ennis may play on Friday. Jordan Leopold is out for the weekend, but could play next week.
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: Canucks Mason Raymond is ready to return. He’s skating with Cody Hodgson and Jannik Hansen. Manny Malhotra to the 4th line.
- Vancouver Canucks via twitter: Cory Schneider will start in net for the Canucks against the Predators tonight.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: It sounds like Ilya Bryzgalov will start in net for the Flyers Friday against the Ducks.

Philadelphia Flyers NHL.com: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will be out 4 weeks as he’s scheduled to have knee surgery tomorrow afternoon to remove some loose particles that have been bothering him for a month or so.

Tim Panaccio via twitter: The Flyers have created $5.6 million in cap space with Pronger and Lilja on the LTIR.
Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Flyers have put Andreas Nodl on waivers. Panthers Mark Cullen is on re-entry waivers.
Seth Rorabaugh via twitter: Penguins Kris Letang has yet to undergo a baseline test.

- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes GM Don Maloney on Kyle Turris:
“He felt that he decided he wanted to go down a certain route and certain things he was looking for; and for us as an organization, very few times in the CBA where you do have some leverage, and we just felt strongly that we needed to use our leverage now,” he said.
“Looking down the road with some other players … we just felt it was important to set a standard on how we operate.”
Maloney added the process was always about business as Turris was looking for a contract worth a lot more than he got. Captain Shane Doan on having Turris back in the locker room:
“Obviously, we’re going to tease him, we’re going to have fun with him,” he said. “This room is a pretty good group of guys that’s gonna give it to him, and the reason you give it to him is because you like him so much.
“Everybody wants him back. So we’re looking forward to it, and I’m sure he’s looking forward to playing hockey again, that’s what he does, and he does it really well.”
- Jim Gintonio via twitter: His gut feeling is that Turris will remain with the Coyotes.
- Dan Gelston (AP) in the Raleigh News & Observer: The NHL’s CBA is to expire on Sept. 15th 2012, but talks are scheduled to begin just after the NHL All-Star Game.
- Iain MacIntyre via twitter: Canucks forward Mason Raymond is getting close to returning, with the possibility of him being in the lineup next week during their homestand.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was fined $2,500 for his hit on TJ Oshie.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Blair Jones was put on waivers by the Lightning. Predators Niclas Bergfors cleared waivers.

- Mark Stepneski of ESPN: Stars new owner Tom Gaglardi on his philosophy on spending money on players:
“I learned in the Western Hockey League that they only way you win is you build from within. You build, draft, develop and coach. That’s the philosophy I come with. I think there have been enough cases around the NHL to know that you cannot buy a winner, so I believe in the old fashioned way of building teams. Having said that, we’re here to win. This isn’t about anything other than becoming a great team and pursuing championships. If Joe (Nieuwendyk) and his staff think that is something we can do in terms of stepping up and doing more in that regard, then we’re going to do it.”
Gaglardi would also like to bring Mike Modano back into the organization in some capacity.
- Josh Kosman of the NY Post: Billionaire Nelson Peltz (owner of Wendy’s) may be interested in buying $250 million of the New Jersey Devils debt. Peltz could step in if the current ownership fails in their talks with it’s lenders to restructure their debt. Peltz was interested in buying the Islanders last December. The Devils missed an Oct. 17th deadline on an approximate $80 million principal payment. They were able to extend the deadline. The Devils and the Devils Arena Entertainment unit are losing about $15 million a year.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Mason Raymond could be back in the lineup for their 3 game road trip, which begins against the Avalanche on Wednesday. They also play on Friday in Phoenix and Saturday in San Jose. Dan Murphy via twitter: Raymond says there is no timetable for his return. GM Mike Gillis said that Raymond will be back this week. Coach Alain Vigneault said a stint in Chicago is also an option.
- Frank Servalli via twitter: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger has a virus, and Braydon Coburn is not allowed contact due to an upper-body injury.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen will be back on the ice in a day or two. He was feeling “residual effects” from knee surgery.
- Kevin Schultz of Islanders Point Blank: Schultz wonders if the Islanders have lost faith in their coach. Capuano has called them out privately and publicly.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward T.J. Oshie didn’t skate yesterday but is expected to play tonight against the Kings. Oshie jammed his wrist on Saturday. Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo tweaked his hamstring and won’t play. He is listed as day-to-day.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Magnus Paajarvi has been a healthy scratch for 3 of the last 7 games. Devan Dubnyk is expected to make the start tonight against the Predators.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for the 2nd consecutive day and was meeting with doctors to see where he stands regarding his concussion. He won’t play tonight, but could join on the team on their 5 game road trip that starts on Friday. He won’t get results from his baseline test until this morning. If he passes, he’s expected to start practicing with the team.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks forward Mason Raymond skated with teammates yesterday for the first time since he suffered a compression fracture in his back in the Stanley Cup final. Defenseman Sami Salo may practice today and Alex Burrows is still day-to-day.
- Dave Hilson of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs center Tim Connolly spoke yesterday about his most recent injury.
“It was just a little bit of a cross check … I kind of felt right away that there was something wrong but I just tried to battle through it,” Connolly said of the injury. “I’m just giving it a couple of days to settle down and then I’ll be right back to working out, skating and getting prepared to get back in the lineup.”
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings forward Scott Parse left last night’s game in the 1st period with a lower-body injury. Terry Murray said he’s “a little more than day-to-day.”

- Bob McKenzie via twitter: There has been zero movement on the LA Kings – Drew Doughty front. Doughty’s agent may try to generate an offer sheet but that isn’t easy. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein responds to a question on whether it’s more of Doughty’s or Meehan’s wishes to still be unsigned … the agent and player are united.
- Dave Hodge via twitter: Some members of Jason Spezza’s family expect him to be a Maple Leaf. Hodge doesn’t believe it.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Three months after Mason Raymond suffered a broken vertebrae in the Stanley Cup final, he’s still not sure if he’ll play again.
“At the end of the day, it could have been worse,” Raymond said. “I’m lucky to be standing here today with arms and legs moving. I’m still having some discomfort with some soft tissue, but it’s coming along well and I’m happy with the process.
“Whenever you have something in that [spinal] area, you have a serous risk of having additional problems. So, yeah, I feel lucky.”
Raymond has worked on his conditioning but hasn’t done any heavy lifting, and he hasn’t skated yet.
- Randi Marshall of Newsday: A $346.5 million proposal was unveiled yesterday to renovate the Nassau Coliseum and make a sports-entertainment complex on the 77 acres surrounding the arena. The builder does still have some noncommittal responses from some key players in the deal. The private developer would spend $100 million to upgrade the Coliseum and raise the roof to increase seating. The plan also includes a ballpark, parking garage, an indoor rink, 70,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki is considering surgery to fix his lingering pain from his lower-body injury. If he does, he’ll be out for 12 weeks. Martin Havlat is still not taking contact after his shoulder surgery in May. He’s been skating with Ryane Clowe and Logan Couture.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Rangers coach John Tortorella likes the chemistry of the Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan line, and it’s very likely they will start the season together.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks that Devan Dubnyk has the edge over Nikolai Khabibulin for the Oilers opening night starter.
- Terry Koshan and Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs prospect Joe Colborne will likely start the season with the Marlies.
“He is still learning,” Leafs coach Ron Wilson said Thursday. “One thing to me is, obviously, he needs to get a little stronger, but he knows that.
“We’re going to be patient with him. He’s learning the game and has tremendous hockey sense. (The NHL) is a man’s game. Everybody is stronger and quicker.”
The Leafs don’t know when Mike Brown will be able to return to practice. He has a lower-body injury.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have a tough decision on 2011 1st round pick Mika Zibanejad.
“He’s big and strong. He’s a man now. He’s not a kid. So, the learning curve could be very short for him. The way he played (Wednesday), he is showing us he’s close, he is showing us that he may be ready to play.”
- Curtis Zupke via twitter: The Ducks have sent Rickard Rakell, goalies John Gibson, Igor Bobkov and center Joseph Cramarossa back to junior.
- Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins cut 13 players yesterday: Brandon DeFazio, Brian Gibbons, Tom Kuhnhackl, Ben Street, Paul Thompson, Dominik Uher, Geoff Walker, defensemen Simon Despres, Alex Grant, Joey Mormina, Philip Samuelsson, Carl Sneep and goaltender Patrick Killeen.

- Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane still has his cast on his left wrist, but is sure he’ll be ready for the season opener.
‘‘It’s been a long time, and I’m anxious to start the season,’’ Kane said Saturday as he and four teammates took part in Blackhawks Day at U.S. Cellular Field. ‘‘I think I’ll be ready right away. I think once I get this [cast] off, I’ll be able to do pretty much anything. I practiced with the guys the other day, just trying to keep up with skating. I think just strengthening it will be the only thing.’
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: With the Bruins training camp approaching and with no contract for Brad Marchand, the Bruins are sniffing around to see what his trade value is. “For those doubting the Bruins shopping Marchand. Don’t.” Garrioch doesn’t think the gap is insurmoutable but the Bruins may want to see what they can get for him after 1 good year.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins and David Krejci had started contract extension talks. Krejci should be the teams number 1 center and is entering the final year of his 3 year, $11.25 million deal. He could see a deal similar to Patrice Bergeron’s 3 year, $15 million deal.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: The Vancouver Canucks will have a spot in their top 6 open due to Ryan Kesler’s offseason hip surgery and with Mason Raymond out still with his fractured vertebrae. Cody Hodgson, Chris Higgins, Marco Sturm and Bill Sweatt will be vying for a spot.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Cooper lists 5 prospects Predators fans should watch: Chet Prickard, Ryan Ellis, Craig Smith, Roman Josi and Austin Watson.
- Katie Carrrera of the Washington Post: Though the Capitals have 7 defenseman on 1-way contracts, not including Tom Poti, prospect Dmitry Orlov may push those ahead of him on the depth chart. Other Capitals prospects to watch are forward Cody Eakin, Mattias Sjogren and Stanislav Galiev.

Johnny Boychuk takes Mason Raymond awkwardly into the boards early in last nights game. Raymond didn’t return and was taken to hospital.
Jason Botchford via twitter: The refs told the Canucks that no penalty was called because Raymond lost an edge.
Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kypreos is told that the NHL will not further review the hit. Early speculation is that Raymond will be out 4-6 months with a back/hip injury.
Update: Dan Murphy via twitter: A source close to the Raymond family is saying that he suffered a fractured vertebrae.
