More on Belak … Byfuglien arrested … Kugryshev back to Russia … H. Sedin has sore hip … 10 “under-the-radar” players

  • Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: Two people who knew Wade Belak said that he did suffer from depression and that he took medication to treat it. Belak’s widow released a statement asking “that everyone remember Wade’s infectious sense of humour, his caring spirit and the joy he brought to his friends, family and fans.”
  • Mark Seidel via twitter: Seidel says that Belak did not kill himself and that “any suggestion to the contrary is simply wrong.” In time the truth will come out. He can’t say much about the death, but believes it will be “ruled a horrible accident” when all said and done. He apologizes for the vagueness.
  • Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun: Special assistant with the NHLPA Mathieu Schneider said on the radio that people should stop jumping to conclusions regarding Wade Belak’s death. Schneider said it’s “dangerous and hurtful,” especially to his family, to speculate why he ended his life. Buffery lists a bunch of athletes (not just hockey players) who have taken their lives in the last year.
  • Ed Tait and Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien was arrested late Wednesday night on “probable cause for third degree boating while intoxicated and the refusal of a blood or urine test.” He was released from jail 2:23 Thursday morning. He was booked weighing 286 pounds, up from his approximate 245 pounds playing weight last year.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is in the final year of his contact, has only played with the Wings, and would like to keep it that way.  “Everyone knows I like it here a lot,” Kronwall said. “I want to stay. Hopefully, they want me to stay as well. So whenever they feel it’s the right time to start negotiating we’ll be ready for it.” The Wings will likely start contact talks with Kronwall soon.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Capitals prospect Dmitri Kugryshev is heading back to Russia after playing last year in the AHL. His deal is not the ‘rent’ type, he’ll be signing a valid contract with CSKA. The Capitals will retain his rights.
  • Gord McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Cancucks forward Henrik Sedin’s status may be up in the air, more will be known when he skates next week. “I don’t think it [Henrik's sore hip] was too bad, but he felt he needed some time off.”
  • Scott Burnside of ESPN: Burnside mentions 10 “Under-the-radar” players who could make an impact this season: Alexei Ponikarovsky (CAR), JS Giguere (COL), Jakub Voracek (PHI), Anthony Stewart (CAR), Andrew Cogliano (ANA), Ian White (DET), James Neal (PIT), Niclas Bergfors (NASH), Mathieu Garon (TB) and Roman Hamrlik (WAS).
  • Martin Lunden of Swedish Oil by dohfOs: Oilers 2011 1st round pick Oscar Klefbom had his leg cut that required 10 stitches. When the stitches were removed, it was discovered that it was infected. He is on penicillin which prohibits him from playing.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators GM David Poile said defenseman Francis Bouillon “will probably not be ready for camp.” Mike Fisher is still recovering from shoulder surgery. “I would say we’d probably go a little bit slower with (Fisher) going into training camp to make sure he’s ready and 100 percent going into the season,” Poile said.

Stamkos Hurt? Jackets need to make a move … Howard and Holmstrom injured … O’Reilly crashes heavily into boards … plus more rumors

  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Goalless in 6 games, and there are indications that Steven Stamkos is injured.

But then Boucher indicated Stamkos has been playing hurt.

“We never said it but he was injured,” Boucher said.

Well, that sparked all kinds of other questions.

    What is the injury?

“Some parts of the body injury,” Boucher said. “It’s a lot better but it was really annoying for a while.”

Did the injury coincide with his scoring drought?

    “Almost.”

    Stamkos added

“nothing major, nothing that’s going to keep me from playing a game. Honestly, it’s the bumps and bruises I go through every year.”

He also said he has been fighting “a little bit of the flu, lately.”

  • Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are in a 6-14-3 slide (heading into last night’s game) and need to make a trade to shake things up. They could use a centerman and a defenseman. Some of their veterans brought in to instill a winning attitude haven’t really lived up to the plan. Arace wonders if they’d overrated some of their younger players. They could trade Jake Voracek or Derick Brassard for a defenseman, and change the makeup of the team. Maybe trade a couple draft picks for one, like the Canadiens did in getting James Wisniewski, and where was Howson on that one? They could also move Sammy Pahlsson, Chris Clark, Fedor Tyutin, Jan Hejda and Mathieu Garon to a contender.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Jimmy Howard injured his knee in the first period last night. He was helped off the ice with about 7 minutes to go with a bruised knee. The Red Wings have also lost Tomas Holmstrom for likely 4 weeks with a fractured right hand. “Battling around the net,” he said. “Felt something. “Got to the bench and I felt like I can’t hold on to the stick anymore.” The Wings are already without Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary, Chris Osgood and Brad Stuart.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Cal O’Reilly crashed heavily into the boards (video below), was taken to hospital, but was later released. He was able to join the team on their charter home, the injury he sustained is not known yet.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars will likely look for a puck moving defenseman, “but it would have to be the perfect deal.but it would have to be the perfect deal.” If a new owner is not found by the trade deadline day, it would have to be a ‘cash for cash’ deal as there is no extra money.
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster has been working the phones, “If for nothing else, I want to know what it is the teams are looking to do. Are there things that may make some sense for us? “You always want to make sure you’re gathering that information.” Feaster has 11 players with no-trade clauses and 11 with a cap of more than $3 million.

“Some guys will be honest with you up front and say, forget dollar for dollar, I have to win the battle of the dollars. I want to send more out than I’m taking back.

“That’s the tough thing. Guys want to match up term, too. It’s difficult when you have contracts with term and big dollars.

“I had to laugh, I had one guy say to me it has to be a fair deal skill for skill, but it has to be even money, too.”

Souray out with Broken Hand, More moves coming for Leafs? Kesler-Canucks talks on hold

  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Throwing a wrench in to the Edmonton Oilers and Sheldon Souray trade plans, is Souray’s broken hand that he suffered fighting Jarome Iginla on Saturday. How long he’ll be out is still unknown, but he’s not expected back before the NHL trade deadline day on March 3rd.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke may not be finished dealing. There’s still a good chance that Alexei Ponikarovsky, Lee Stempniak, and Garnet Exelby will be traded.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: “It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s a question of ‘when’”. Dreger is referring to the trading of Tomas Kaberle. Burke continues to say he won’t ask Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause, but yesterday’s trades may send Kaberle up to Burke’s office saying he’s ready to go. The Leafs will be probably looking to get a top-3 or top-6 forward and a 1st round draft pick. To get the top 3 or top 6 forward they want, I don’t think they will be able to pull off that type of deal until after the season. I don’t think teams that think they have a shot this year, would want to trade a top forward during their run.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa GM Brian Lawton is rejecting reports that if Jeffrey Vinik buys the team, that Vincent Lecavalier will be traded.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Contract negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and Ryan Kesler have been put on hold until after the season. They have reached an impasse and don’t want it to become an in-season distraction. They are roughly a $1 million apart, Kesler’s camp feel he’s worth $5 million, the Canucks think it’s closer to $4 million.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
    • Teams looking for help on the blueline may come calling for Mathieu Schneider, and to a lesser extent, Chris Chelios.
    • The Penguins need someone to play along side Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, but they also need some defensive help. They could use a player like Barret Jackman but he’s probably not available.
    • 38 year old and recent healthy scratch, Slava Kozlov, will most likely be made available by the Atlanta Thrashers.
    • Matheson thinks that the Penguins will eventually trade Malkin, making Crosby and Staal their 1-2 centers. For Malkin he thinks they could get a front line winger, top defenseman, forward prospect, and a 1st and 2nd round pick.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings will get Johan Franzen back next week after being out since the 3rd game of the season. Feb. 9th against the St. Louis Blues is the target date. GM Ken Holland will have to make a move or two to get under the salary cap.
  • AP on Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall will be out indefinitely with a torn ACL, and will have to undergo surgery. This is a big blow to the Coyotes, as he was leading the Coyotes in goals this season with 18.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: John-Michael Liles was a healthy scratch for the 3rd time this season, and it has been no secret that he’s available for trade. The problem is his salary cap number is $4.1 million, and he has 2 years left on his contract after this year.

Around the Boards: Trade Chips for Boston, Zetterberg Back Tonight? Brunnstrom to Minors, Schneider Clears Waivers

    • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: More talk on that the Bruins have plenty of high picks for the next couple of NHL drafts that could bring them help at the trade deadline. No mention of plays or positions their after in this article.
    • Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Henrik Zetterberg took part in a full practice yesterday and should be back in the lineup tonight against the Avalanche.
    • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mentioned in previous rumors a few months ago after his non-productive play, Fabian Brunnstrom, has found himself sent to the Dallas Stars farm team for a conditioning stinct.
    • Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Mathieu Schneider cleared waivers and his current options will be to report of the AHL Manitoba Moose or retire. Demand for more playing time was only part of the issue for Schneider, he managed to upset almost everyone. There is a chance the Canucks would put him through re-entry waivers in hope that someone would take 1/2 of his contract, but it seems certain that he won’t be playing for Canucks ever again.

Around the Boards: Changes coming in St. Louis and Edmonton? Schneider to be claimed off Waivers? White In, Kaberle Out?

    • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Another mention that fans in St. Louis want Eric Staal. You could go to every NHL city, and anyone that knows anything about hockey would want Eric Staal. More of a dream than a rumor I think. That said, the Blues need to do something. They have some veterans that could be moved, but salary will play a big part: Keith Tkachuk ($2.15 million, Paul Kariya ($6 million), Eric Brewer ($4.5 million), Andy McDonald ($5.2 million), Barret Jackman ($4.5 this year, $7.5 mill the next 2), Brad Boyes ($5 million). What teams are more interested in would be: David Perron, Patrick Berglund, TJ Oshie, David Backes, and prospects Philip McRae, Jake Allen, Ian Cole, and Alex Pietrangelo. When you look at the young talent the Blues have, they could make a push for Staal, but I just don’t see it happening.
    • Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Time to blow it up in Edmonton? Players that they like or have contracts that will be tough to move: Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner, Gilbert Brule, Sam Gagner, Ladislav Smid, Lubomir Visnovsky, Sheldon Souray, Nikolai Khabibulin, Jeff Deslauriers and Shawn Horcoff. Players who they might be able to get something for: Ethan Moreau, Steve Staios and maybe Fernando Pisani.
    • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks were unable to trade Mathieu Schnieder, and have placed him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he’ll be assigned to the AHL and will still collect his $1.55 million salary ($1.2 million in potential bonuses, $2.75 million cap hit this year). The Canucks think there was enough interest in Schnieder that he might be claimed by someone.
    • Jonas Siegel of AM 640 Toronto: Ian White will be a RFA this off-season and should be looking for a contract around $3 million a season. With White’s solid play this season and last, and with the off-season addition of Komisarek and Beauchemin, the trading of Kaberle will be all over the rumors as long as Kaberle is in the blue and white.

Around the Boards: Semin resigning for 1 year, Rangers need some size, Who will captain the Capitals and Leafs?

    • Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy: Though it’s not official yet, all signs are that the Capitals have signed Alex Semin to a 1 year, $6 million deal. After next season, Semin would become an unrestricted free agent. It has been mentioned that Semin could be bolting for the KHL in the next couple years. Chesnokov interviews Semin in this article.
    • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers have been searching from some scoring, and now have Prospal out for 10-21 days, but Brooks thinks they have another issue. “It is imperative that GM Glen Sather acquire big bodies who will use them, even if it means sacrificing some of the skill level that coach John Tortorella covets in his athletes.”
    • Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Both the Canucks and Mathieu Schneider deal a trade is the best interests of all sides. He signed with the club this past offseason as they both felt he could fit will on the power play, but the acquisition that brought in Christian Ehrhoff changed that.
    • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: With the trade of Chris Clark yesterday by the Capitals, the team captaincy opened up. Most people will calling for Ovechkin to get the ‘C’, but Mike Knuble or Brooks Laich could be other options.
    • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Ian White has added his name to the list of candidates to be next Maple Leafs captain.  White joins current alternate captains Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, Tomas Kaberle, and possibly Matt Stajan and Phil Kessel.

Around the Boards: Schnieder MIA, Leclaire and Neil return tonight, Lucic back Jan 1, New top line in Edm.

    • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The future of Mathieu Schneider is still up in the air after he left the team last week for ‘personal reasons’. Schneider has been the Canucks 6th-7th Dman this year and last Friday he was “Removed from the lineup to make way for Aaron Rome, Schneider bolted from the dressing room without talking to reporters, had an animated discussion with Canucks’ player development guru Dave Gagner, the defenceman’s contemporary, and left. He hasn’t been seen since.” I’m guessing he’s pondering retirement or if he’d like the Canucks to move him somewhere else.
    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:  Both Pascal Leclaire and Chris Neil will return to the Senators lineup tonight against the Penguins.
    • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Victor Stalberg, fresh off of his AHL recall, scoring 2 goals in 3 games, is on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Richard Wallin will be in the lineup tonight in his place. Wallin has 2 assists in 26 games, mostly on the 4th. Stalberg’s scored the 2 goals while playing on the 4th line.
    • Brandon Hall of the Boston Globe: Milan Lucic is still eying Jan. 1st Winter Classic as his return date.
    • Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun:  Ryan Poultny has been promoted to the Oilers #1 line with Dustin Penner and Gilbert Brule … and why are they in last place in the Western Conference? And here I thought the Maple Leafs top line looked bad.

    Canucks add Blue line Depth

“The Vancouver Canucks have added a lot of depth to their blueline in a short period of time. The team has acquired defencemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenceman Daniel Rahimi and forward Patrick White. Vancouver also announced on Friday that they have inked veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider to a contract.(Source-TSN)

With the loss of Mattias Ohlund to Tampa Bay via free agency this off-season, the acquisition of some veteran blue liners should help the Vancouver Canucks chances when trying to re-sign all star goaltender Roberto Luongo to a contract extension. Luongo will be an UFA heading into next summer.

Schneider Close to Joining the Canucks

According to Sportsnet.ca, the Vancouver Canucks are close to signing offensive defenceman Mathieu Schneider. The deal is reportedly for 1 year. This would be good move for the Canucks who need an offensive minded dman to help run the powerplay. Despite his age, Schneider is still a capable NHL defenceman.

The 41 year old Schneider is coming off a season split between Atlanta and Montreal. During his 44 games in Atlanta, he struggled a bit recording only 15 points and was a -10 (no surprise on the -10 as he was in Atlanta). Schneider had more success in Montreal where he posted  17 points in 23 games.

The Canucks have been looking to add a offensive defenceman for most of the off-season, and where supposedly one of the teams that was interested Tomas Kaberle. Kaberle’s no-trade clause kicked back in on the 15th, so the Canucks were forced to look elsewhere.
