Roy could be return this year … Sens want to re-sign Anderson … Canucks UFA Dmen … Lou hoping for Parise return
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on March 19th, 2011
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres center, Derek Roy, out since Dec. 23rd with a torn quad, could return this season. Though he may not be ready until mid-May, if the Sabres made it deep into round 2 or the conference finals, he could return.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Senators are interested in re-signing Craig Anderson, but he may want to see how the restructing in Ottawa goes before committing. Robin Lehner will be given the opportunity to make the team next year, but may spend most of the year in the AHL.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts will all be UFAs for the Vancouver Canucks after the season. They have Dan Hamhuis, Keith Ballard, Alex Edler and Aaron Rome signed for next year at a cap hit of $12.7 million. They may look at signing either Bieksa or Ehrhoff (Ehrhoff more likely) for around $5 million on a long term deal, and possibly Salo on a shorter term, less money deal. If either Bieksa or Ehrhoff want to much money, they could sign the other guy.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devil GM Lou Lamoriello on a possible Zach Parise return this season, “I would hope so, but let’s wait and see,” Lamoriello said. “Zach is progressing daily.” The Devils could also get Defenseman Matt Corrente (shoulder) back this year, he’s been skating for over 2 weeks.
- Louis Jean of Sportsnet: Lightning forward Simon Gagne met with a neck specialist on Friday and won’t be in the lineup on Saturday. He received an injection for a pinched nerve and needs to rest for 4 days.
Moves the Flames didn’t make … Cammalleri has separated shoulder … Hemsky has concussion, Eberle and Horcoff close to returning
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 19th, 2011
- Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail: In November the Capitals called the Flames and proposed a Robyn Regehr for Tomas Fleischmann deal. The Flames obviously said no, Fleischmann went to the Avalanche for Scott Hannan, and has recorded 20 points in 21 games. The deal also would have saved the Flames $1.4 million in cap space.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Back in August Clarke MacArthur talked to 3 teams about a contract, the Leafs, Flames and Lightning. The Flames were close to the cap and dealing with uncertainty of Daymond Langkow’s health, but were willing to bury some contract to bring him in. As the Flames debated about their roster, the Maple Leafs moved ahead with a 1 year, $1.1 million offer. MacArthur has 14 goals and 23 assists in 44 games.
- Allan Robinson of the Globe and Mail: Sidney Crosby has missed his 6th game with a concussion and doesn’t know when he’ll be able to begin practicing. He’s still experiencing an occasional headache.
- Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: Mike Cammalleri was crosschecked awkwardly into the boards and initial reports are that he could be out 2 weeks with a separated shoulder. The Habs also lost Max Pacioretty, who took a shot from James Wisniewski in the mid-section. He was taken to hospital on a stretcher, hooked up to an IV, with reportedly a rib injury.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers winger Ales Hemsky left last night’s game after one shift in the 2nd period with a concussion. Hemsky didn’t sustain a hit last night, but seems to be an accumulation of a puck and elbow to the head, and a stick to the face in the last 6 games or so. Coach Tom Renney added, “He’s had some symptoms before this game and the doctor looked at him and I don’t know what conclusion they’ve drawn.” Renney on Horcoff being close to returning, “Horc wants to play, but I’ve got a protocol. I won’t play anybody who shouldn’t be in there. If he passes my stuff, he’ll play,” said Renney. (I guess his protocol on knee injuries is stricter than his concussion protocol. You’d think by now they’d wouldn’t allow a guy to play if he’s showing any symptoms of a concussion)
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Jordan Eberle is hoping to return to the Oilers lineup by the end of the month. He’s recovering from a sprained ankle and having appendix removed. Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff is also close to returning , he’s been out since Dec. 7th with a knee injury.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Teams are calling the Penguins about Alex Goligoski, but he’s likely staying. The Penguins have a crowded blueline, but Goligoski has a nice cap hit of $1.833 million and is under contract until after next season. Kings GM Dean Lombardi is looking to make a big deal but hasn’t much luck so far. Jack Johnson did his 7 year, $30 million contract himself, with an agent he may have gotten $3-5 million more. Stephane Da Costa looks to be the top college free agent this year, with one scout saying “everyone” is interested.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: NJ Devils defenseman Matt Corrente will be out 2-4 weeks with a shoulder injury that occurred in a fight with Steve Downie.
- Seth Rorabaugh of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins signed Mark Letestu to a 2 year, $1.25 million deal. This signing may ultimately effect Max Talbot’s status this off-season as he’ll be a RFA and could be let go by the team.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: There is a slight chance that Alex Kovalev returns to the Senators lineup on Thursday against the Flyers.
Tallon would like ‘Coaches Challenge’ … Hossa out 2 weeks … Doughty hopefully to return Saturday … El Nino back to Junior
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 28th, 2010
- Darren Dreger of TSN: At November’s General Managers meetings, GM Dale Tallon is considering proposing a ‘Coaches Challenge’. TSN polled some NHL coaches (“Would you support a coaches challenge for certain plays, like goalie interference?”), 14 were in agreement. Limits to what could be challenged would have to be in place. 7 coaches voted against the idea.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Joel Quenneville is saying Marian Hossa will be out “two weeks”.
- James Duthie via twitter: The Los Angeles Kings are hopeful that Drew Doughty will be back in the lineup this weekend.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The New York Islanders have sent Nino Niedereitter back to Portland (WHL).
- James Mirtle via twitter: The Boston Bruins will start Tim Thomas tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs will start Jonas Gustavsson. Jonas Siegel via twitter: If Kris Versteeg (back) can’t go tonight, John Mitchell will likely take his spot on the 2nd line.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Tampa Bay Lightning have put Michael Vernace on waivers.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: If Blake Wheeler is moved by the Boston Bruins, Tyler Seguin could move into the top 2 lines. There still is the possibility that Seguin is sent back to Junior. An announcement could be made in the next 24-72 hours on Seguin’s future this year.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: New Jersey Devils defenseman Matt Corrente broke his hand last night.
Ribeiro staying in Dallas … Neal-Stars continue to talk … Bergfors-Thrashers close … Spot on Kings D open for Hickey? Keeping Parise happy
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 13th, 2010
- Mark Stepneski of the ESPN Dallas: Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has put center Mike Ribeiro’s mind at ease, telling him that the plan is for him to be in Dallas this season. “I reassured him that I have no intentions of moving him. I think he was worried about it. There was speculation out there that he was going to be moved any day,” Nieuwendyk said. Ribeiro’s name has been mentioned all summer as a player they may give up to acquire a puck moving defenseman.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: James Neal and the Dallas Stars continue to talk, but nothing is imminent. Nieuwendyk wants to get a deal done before the start of training camp, but realizes it may not happen.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun is hearing the Atlanta Thrashers are close to re-signing RFA Niclas Bergfors. Update 11:05 am: LeBrun via twitter: Confirms that Bergfors signs for 1 year, $900,000.
- Helene Elliott of the the LA Times: With the departures of Sean O’Donnell and Randy Jones, and the injury to Matt Greene, 2007 4th overall pick Tomas Hickey might be ready to make the jump to the big club. Last season Hickey was limited to 23 regular season and playoff games due to shoulder and ankle injuries. “Going forward I want to make this team and that’s the only thing on my mind,” he said Sunday. His hockey IQ makes up for his lack of size. 2008 13th overall pick, Colten Teubert is still recovering from wrist surgery and won’t visit the doctors until early October.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise will be an RFA after this season, and an UFA the year after. Parise wants to win, and if Kovalchuk’s re-signing helps that, it will help in his re-signing. “But if any of the repercussions of re-signing Kovalchuk – delaying starting negotiations, cap trouble, the impact on the roster, etc. – leads directly or indirectly to Parise leaving in two years, it will be it difficult to say this Summer of Kovy was worth it.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils have until October 6th to shed at least $3-3.5 million to get under the cap, and will be looking at their prospects closely to fill the roster spot(s), paying close attention to the likes of Jacob Josefson, Mattias Tedenby, Alexander Urbom, Tyler Eckford, Matt Corrente, Adam Henrique, Nick Palmeri and Vladimir Zharkov.
Friday morning rumors involving free agents and trade candidates
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on September 10th, 2010
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Anaheim Ducks and Bobby Ryan continue to talk, but rumor is they haven’t agreed on any specific part of the contract.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Most likely scenario for Sheldon Souray is to attend Oilers camp, play in the top 4, and show teams that need a pp quarterback that he’s healthy.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Andrew Cogliano is still looking for a contract from the Oilers, and is finding out he might have to take less than he’d like. The 3rd line center may have to take less than Gilbert Brule’s $1.85 million, even though he has more career points than him. Teams are being tighter when giving young players their second contract. The Oilers see him as a top 9 forward, not a top 6, and want to pay him accordingly, possibly a 1 year deal for less than $1.5 million.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Deputy Commish Bill Daly said in an email that the League is still unsure on if or how they will penalize the New Jersey Devils for Kovalchuk’s first contract.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Lou needs to shed around $3.5 million in cap space, and doesn’t want to deal Bryce Salvador’s $2.9 million contract. Dainius Zubrus is a likely candidate. Matt Corrente’s name has also come up, and Travis Zajac name continues to float around. There was a rumor that Tomas Kaberle could end up with the Devils in a big exchange with the Leafs, players and picks heading to Toronto, but it is “most difficult to fathom”. Lou hasn’t asked any of his players that have a no-trade clause to waive it. Back in 2006 the Devils sent Malakhov and a 1st round pick to San Jose for a couple minor leaguers, and were warned by the NHL not to do it again.
- Chris Botta via twitter: At some point this season, Botta thinks that Bill Guerin will play for the Flyers or the Devils.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: The GM of the KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk confirmed that he had talks with Jose Theodore, but Theodore didn’t want to go to Russia.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: It looks like Brayden Schenn will be out 2-4 weeks, Kings hoping additional tests won’t reveal any major damage in his knee.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: The NHLPA Executive Board is voting on Donald Fehr as Executive Director, player reps must vote by 5:00 pm Saturday. Sportsnet also confirming the vote.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: There are 3 bids to buy the 75% of the St. Louis Blues from TowerBrook Capital

Around the Boards: Komisarek returning tonight, no quick fix trades for Columbus, Maurice safe, NJ has trade chips
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 30th, 2009
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Mike Komisarek will return to the Maple Leafs lineup tonight after missing 3 weeks with a small tear in his quad. Defenceman Garnet Exelby and Jeff Finger will find themselves in the press box, that’s about a $4.75 million cap hit for the press box. Vesa Toskala returned to practice but isn’t ready for game action yet.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Losers of 5 straight games, there’s no hiding the fact that the Columbus Blue Jackets are struggling, but Jackets GM, Scott Howson, says he’s not actively pursuing a ‘skake-up’ trade.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News Observer: With changes on the horizon for the Carolina Hurricanes, President and GM Jim Rutherford, said that coach Paul Maurice won’t be part of them.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils are getting healthy, and the replacements were pretty impressive, which may mean they could be trade bait later on in the season. Johnny Oduya, Jay Pandolfo, and Rob Niedermayer could return this week, and Paul Martin is only 2 weeks away. Defensemen Mark Fraser and Matt Corrente, and forwards Rod Pelley, Tim Sestito, Dean McAmmond, Vladimir Zharkov, Matt Halischuk, Illka Pikkarainen and Andrew Peters, have filled in admirably.
- Michael Obernauer of the NY Daily News: The frustration level of John Tortorella is growing, and so is his doghouse, winger Ales Kotalik could be the next. Could trades or some other player movement be the next step?
