- Nashville Predators via twitter: Predators defenseman Shea Weber is out with a concussion. He’ll be evaluated daily, there is no timetable for his return.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: The Maple Leafs have put John-Michael Liles on the IR with concussion-like symptoms.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kings forward Simon Gagne is out with a concussion, and likely saves Andrei Loktionov from being assigned to the AHL.

- Darren Dreger of TSN: Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton is on hold as the health of Gilbert Brule has stalled things. The Kings were going to buyout Brule but teams are not allowed to do that to injured players. Sources are saying Sheldon Souray’s name has come up, but the Kings are said to be not interested. Helene Elliott via twitter: The Kings wouldn’t be able to trade/waive/buy Brule out, which was what they wanted to do to regain some cap space for another left winger. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Source is saying the Flames are back in and serious.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: If the Hurricanes re-sign Jokinen, it will be difficult for them to re-sign Stillman according to GM Rutherford. Rutherford hopes to have some signings done by Monday. The Hurricanes had Ryan Murphy going in their top 6 and were targetting a forward, but couldn’t pass on Murphy when he dropped.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: The NY Rangers didn’t qualify Matt Gilroy, he’ll be a UFA now.

- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: It has been determined that Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard died accidentally from a toxic mix of alcohol and oxycodone. His family acknowledged he had an addiction and “repeated courageous attempts at rehabilitation.” “Derek had been showing tremendous improvement but was ultimately unable to beat this opponent,” the message from Boogaard’s parents, Len and Joanne, and brothers and sister said. “While he played and lived with pain for many years, his passion for the game, his teammates and his community work was unstoppable.” Boogaard had voluntarily admitted himself into rehab 3 times since 2009.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks have reportedly signed goal Alexander Salak to a 2 year, one way contract. Salak was acquired along with Michael Frolik for Jack Skille and prospects. He played in the Swedish Elite league this past season, appearing in 32 games with a 1.97 GAA and .926 SV%. He’ll make about $600,000 and is in the mix for the backup job. Marty Truco is likely gone.
- Gord Miller via twitter: Winnipeg mayor says it’s only a “matter of time” before a deal to move the Thrashers to Winnipeg is done, it’s not done yet. Darren Dreger via twitter: “Assuming ASG and TNSE reach agreement, NHL board approval may not happen until the end of June B of G mtng. No push to expedite that mtng.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: “Re-alignment would very likely wait another season; Winnipeg would play in Southeast for one year”
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Don’t look for the Red Wings to be big spenders this off-season. They currently have 15 players locked up for $46.8 million. So they have about $16 million open for 8 players and have 4 free agents; Nicklas Lidstrom, Jonathan Ericsson, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller that they’d like to bring back.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers will have to decide if Matt Gilroy is worth a $2.1 million qualifying offer. It may be more than they want to pay the 27 year old who has made a limited impact so far. They have depth along the blueline, prospects waiting a limited cap space.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: There have been no talks so far between the Penguins and RFA Dustin Jeffrey.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: There is nothing to report on Zach Parise talks with the Devils. “(Lamoriello) said they were going to have their internal (end of season) meetings and he was awaiting some direction on the whole ownership situation and once he had that he would reach out to us,” Wade Arnott said. “So, that’s where we stand.”
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: The Panthers have received permission to talk to Thrashers assistant John Torchetti. They may also seek permission to talk with Blackhawks assistant Mike Haviland. Kirk Muller is a potential candidate for the Dallas Stars coaching position. Joe Nieuwendyk has also reportedly contacted Guy Carbonneau, Cory Clouston and Ken Hitchcock.

- Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks goalie Cory Schneider left with under 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period. He had to be helped off the ice after his leg cramped up.
“The cramps, he said, “I could feel coming on after the second and sure enough, on that penalty shot, I just extended my leg and it completely seized up. I felt bad making Lou go in cold in the third.”
Now the question will be, who will start game 7?
“Oh, if I would tell you who I’m going to play, would you believe me now?” said Vigneault, who said he didn’t actually lie, he just “went with the gut.”
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo lasted only 3 shifts last night with an undisclosed injury. Aaron Rome or Keith Ballard could replace him for Game 7.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers have 7 RFA’s to deal with this off-season. Forwards, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, and Brian Boyle. Defenseman Matt Gilroy and Michael Sauer and goalie Chad Johnson. They’ll likely want to bring back UFA Ruslan Fedotenko, and possibly Vinny Prospal. Alex Frolov likely won’t be back. Steve Eminger and Bryan McCabe are UFA’s on the backend. The Rangers will likely go after 31 year old Brad Richards. The Rangers wouldn’t confirm a report that coach John Tortorella signed a 3 year contract extension.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers summer salary cap number is at $47.6 million, with the projected cap number of next year at $62.2 million. Their cap number doesn’t include any of their 6 RFA’s (Brooks didn’t include Chad Johnson), which should about $12 million to sign the 6. If Wade Redden doens’t retire, the Rangers will be on the hook for his contract again, and can’t remove it until they waive him in training camp. Buying out the last year of Chris Drury’s contract would save them $3,333,333 in cap space this year, but would carry a $1,666,667 in 2012-13. Wojtek Wolski carries a $3.8 million next year, and if bought out, would save them $3,333,333 next year. A Sean Avery buyout would save them $1,333,334 in cap space next year. Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe and Steve Eminger likely won’t be offered a contract. They won’t offer Matt Gilroy a $2.1 million qualifying offer, but are expected to give him a 2 year offer worth half that.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from someone close to the Penguins organization that he would expect to see Evgeni Malkin back in the Penguins lineup before Sidney Crosby. Malkin may be able to return if the Penguins get deep in to the playoff, Rossi asked that organization what deep meant, and “was told deep meant conference finals or Stanley Cup Final.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antti Niemi will start Game 6 for the Sharks. “Nemo will play tomorrow. He is our guy,” coach Todd McLellan said Sunday after practice. “We don’t expect him to be perfect,” McLellan said of Niemi. “We expect him to be a little bit better and I think he expects that of himself.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: With the Ducks eliminated from the playoffs, questions regarding whether Teemu Selanne will retire or not are already appearing. When asked late in the season, Selanne said he’d make the decision before July 1st. Selanne is coming off a 31 goal, 80 point season.

- Kevin Allen via twitter: Peter Forsberg will be the assistant GM to Markus Naslund for Modo. Allen wonders if Marc Crawford will be their next coach.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: According to 2 sources close to the sale of the Dallas Stars, Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi is the leading candidate to buy the team. He is the majority owner of the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, and he tried to tbuy the Canucks in 2004. It’s estimated the Stars lost $15 million last season. There are 2 local groups that are interested but Gaglardi seems to be the front-runner.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Lou Lamoriello on the importance of re-signing Zach Parise.
“I don’t think I can say anymore than anybody else can say. He’s an integral part, has been since he’s been here and in everybody’s mind he will continue to be that. So, we’ll do everything we possibly can as expeditious as possible.”
On UFA’s Andy Greene and Johan Hedberg.
“They’ve all done well. Andy is certainly someone who we want back and certainly Hedberg we want back. He did an exceptional job. All of these things have to be handled accordingly.”
On the team’s need for a puck-moving defenseman,
“I don’t think there’s any question that that’s something we’re looking at.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers defenseman Matt Gilroy will be a RFA at the end of the season, and is owed a qualifying offer of $2.1 million for them to retain his rights. The Rangers are expected to offer him a multi-year deal at less money. If Gilroy declines, he would become a UFA.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Ilya Bryzgalov has been taking some local heat for his less than stellar playoff performances the past 2 years. He’ll be a UFA at season’s end, and another disappointing playoff performance could hurt his price tag. The Coyotes will still be interested and a team like the Lightning could be interested. Bryzgalov’s best option is to stay with the Coyotes, but if they relocate, that might change.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller has been sent home due to recurring vertigo symptoms.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: The Blues backup from this past season, Ty Conklin, will be a UFA and may not be back. The Blues have youngsters Ben Bishop and Jake Allen in the AHL and either could be an option. They may look at bringing in a veteran.
“That’s going to be a good discussion,” Armstrong said. “We’re going to have to decide. If it’s not Ben Bishop, then it’s either going to be Ty Conklin or someone else. Could be Jake. There will be some real strong dialogue. But I want to preface that by saying, Jaro is the guy. Jaro has to be the guy I described earlier for us to have success.”

- New York Rangers via twitter: Rangers forward Ryan Callahan broke is ankle, Torts added “long term injury…out indefinitely.” Tortorella added that Matt Gilroy will dress as a RW on Thursday, “gives us some flexibility with having a 7th D in there.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Philadelphia has put Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers. Leighton has a salary of $1.6 million next year, $1.55 million salary cap hit. Claiming team and Flyers would be responsible for half. Leighton wouldn’t be eligible to play for new this year, including playoffs.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning center Vinny Lecavalier will be in the lineup tonight. Defenseman Eric Brewer will sit out, would play if it was a playoff game.

Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Dion Phaneuf has been cleared to return to the Maple Leafs, and will accompany the team to Washington and Pittsburgh. He took part in his first full practice since his injury. It’s not known yet which game he’ll make his return, December 16th against Calgary has been a game he’s been focused on. When Phaneuf returns, the Leafs will have some decisions to make on the blueline, as they have plenty of NHL calibre defenseman.

Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Kane only last 23 seconds yesterday before leaving the after falling awkwardly into the boards. “We’ll know more (Monday) exactly where we’re at,” Quenneville said. “It’s tough to speculate and I don’t want to go there right now, but it’s not real serious. I’ll go to that extent.”

David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The salary cap could go up $2.1 million from the current $59.4 million if the players exercise the 5% inflator clause. At the Board of Governors meetings (starting today) there will be plenty of talk on ownership. Harley Hotchkiss is looking to sell is 22% stake in the Calgary Flames to the other owners. Potential Phoenix Coyotes owner, Matthew Hulsizer, is expected meet with the committee. They’ll likely also talk about the ownership of Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Thrashers could potential move to Winnipeg or Quebec City.

Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette: Andrei Markov will be a UFA after this season, has he worn a Canadiens jersey for the last time? Will they give him big money despite only playing 52 games and have 2 major knee surgeries. The Canadiens have plenty of time to figure out if need to find a replacement for him, trade deadline day is February 28th.

Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Martin Brodeur took part in his first full practice yesterday. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brodeur will head to Pittsburgh with the team, and coach MacLean will decide after the morning skate if he’ll back up Hedberg or not. Gulitti also tweets that Brodeur had some swelling but no pain, and is aiming to play on Friday.

Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blue forward Andy MacDonald is day-to-day with an upper body injury. He’ll be re-evaluated today, and if it’s a concussion, he could be out for indefinite period of time.

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers continue to have $4.125 million dollars as healthy scratches, Todd White and Matt Gilroy. The longer they carry them, the more salary counts against their cap, which may make it more difficult to add a large salary, say a Brad Richards. Sather doesn’t want to send top young assets for Richards, since he could possibly get him for free on July 1st.

- No timetable is set for Marc Savard’s return. They might bury a contract in the minors, but if one of the players they are considering moving is a defenseman, plenty of teams looking for a Dman.
- Brayden Schenn could be loaned to the Canadian Junior team, and if he’s sent back to Junior, he could be traded from Brandon to Portland.
- The Sharks are still trying to get a defenseman.
- Matt Gilroy would likely be part of any package to bring in a center, and will go after Brad Richards if he becomes available.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets are still looking for an offensive defenseman, and might be interested in Ottawa’s Chris Campoli.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins could be looking for a top 6 forward and might have an interest in Cory Stillman.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery hasn’t retired from the NHL, and is hoping to get back in the new year. “He’s working really hard. He wants to get back and he’s committed,” said agent J.P. Barry. Marc Savard passed his exertion test, and could resume skating soon. Owen Nolan is still skating in San Jose and hopes to sign on with someone, Pittsburgh could be a possibility. The New York Rangers are keeping their eye on the Brad Richards-Dallas Stars situation. The Rangers are looking to move Matt Gilroy. The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to add a tough defenseman and a centerman. They made a pitch for Brendan Morrison before he decided on Calgary. Coaches on the hotseat: Brent Sutter (Cal), Randy Carlyle (Ana), and Todd Richards (Min). Washington, Columbus, and Anaheim are keeping an eye on Sheldon Souray.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland will propose new overtime format at next months GM meeting, 4-on-4 for four minutes and 3-on-3 for the remaining four minutes. What LeBrun has been told the Oilers could be thinking with regards to Souray,
1. Do they eventually put him on re-entry waivers and live with paying him half of the remainder of his contract once another team picks him up at half the price?
2. Or do they continue to wait to make a hockey deal, which they’ve been doing for more than a year, and perhaps not move him until June, when he’s suddenly more attractive to teams because he only has a year left on his deal?
The Rangers are mildly interested in Souray, but only through re-entry. The Blue Jackets may no longer be interested in Souray. Marc-Andre Bergeron will have his surgically repaired ACL looked at to see how the progress is going. Teams looking for power play help will be interested.

- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Slava Kozlov will be playing in the KHL this season, hasn’t decided on which team yet.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Fehr’s price tag for being the NHLPA executive director is $7.5 million through 2012, players start to “hmm and haw”.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks now have 3 NHL caliber goalies after signing Antti Niemi. Antero Niittymaki (signed this off-season for $2 million a year, 2 years) and Thomas Greiss were expected to battle for the starting position before the Niemi signing. Niittymaki doesn’t feel that concerned, but Greiss was more disappointed, as he’s probably the #3 goalie now. Greiss has talked to GM Doug Wilson about the situation, which might involve a change of scenery.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Antti Niemi’s agent said that he had “four or five offers” before he decided to sign with the Sharks.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal’s infection in his right foot will keep him out for the beginning of training camp, the team is hopeful he’ll be ready for their Oct. 7th season opener.
- Steve Zipay of Newsday: Speculation, not a rumor. The Bruins could send Marc Savard to the Rangers for possibly Matt Gilroy, Sean Avery and a 2nd round pick.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland met with Kirk Maltby on Wednesday, and is waiting to hear back from him. Maltby would have to earn a spot on the roster, and it might take an injury or 2 to get a spot.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: RFA Chris Stewart signed a 2 year contract worth $5.75 million, $2.5 million this year, $3.25 million next year. Peter Mueller still remains unsigned by the Avalanche. The Avs currently sit $950,000 below the cap floor.
