Afternoon Amusement: Some bad/funny player buyouts that likely won’t happen
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on November 18th, 2011
For your Friday afternoon amusement (or any other day that you happened to stumble across this post), I’ve put together some player ‘buyouts’. Some are because their contract could be bad (like a Scott Gomez) or funny due to the length/amount of the buyout (like an Ilya Kovalchuk).
Now, most of these likely would never happen, much to the chagrin of some, but it should be worth a good laugh. The magical powers of Capgeek.com made this entry possible. (Buyout numbers are based the next buyout period of June 15th 2012. A team could bury a player in the minors during the season, and buy them out afterwards.)
* The numbers listed beside the players name is what the buyout would be and the length of the buyout. The numbers listed beside the years are the Cap hits that would be applied to the team.

Brassard getting interest … Lucic escapes suspension … Tyutin the translator … Not a lot of interest in Nabokov … NHL won’t own Coyotes much longer
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 15th, 2011
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators might be mildly interested in Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who could fit in as their 2nd line center. Cost could be a concern for the Senators, as he carries a $3.2 million cap hit through 2013-14. The Islanders are also believed to be interested. Another option could be Kyle Turris, who needs to sign a deal by December 1st. Flames center Matt Stajan and his $3.5 million for 3 years is available. Though teams are looking for defenseman, Filip Kuba and Brian Lee are not getting much interest.
- Dan Rose of NHL.com: Milan Lucic escaped punishment from Brendan Shanahan.
“I had the hearing because I did make an initial assessment of the play as I do with all plays, but I did have some questions for Milan and I wanted to hear directly from him,” Shanahan told NHL.com. “They were regarding his intent; at what point did he know there was going to be a collision; and whether or not he felt he had the time to avoid the collision. I was satisfied with his answers.”
“The minor penalty called on the ice was the correct call,” Shanahan said. “And, while it’s unfortunate that Miller was hurt I saw nothing egregious about this hit that would elevate it to supplemental discipline.”
- Elliotte Freidman of CBC: Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin, who was rumored to be traded for Evgeni Nabokov, is part of the teams solution. Speculation started as he was asked to stay behind after their game with Kris Russell, Russell was traded to the Blues, so someone assumed Tyutin was being traded as well. Tyutin was asked to hang around in case they needed someone to talk to Nikita Nikitin, who doesn’t speak much English. Islanders GM Garth Snow told Eric Francis that there isn’t much interest in Evgeni Nabokov. One GM: “There are a lot of us who don’t like our teams.” Kyle Turris’ agent met with Coyotes GM Don Maloney on November 2nd when the Coyotes were in Colorado, neither side is saying anything.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Senior league sources are saying that this will be the last year the NHL owns the Phoenix Coyotes. There are 2 groups that have been approved to buy an NHL team, but neither has consummated a sale. There is an estimated 50/50 chance the team will remain in Glendale. Quebec City is at the top of the list for possible relocation. A 2nd southern Ontario team is an option.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers chairman Ed Snider spoke about realignment. The Flyers and Penguins will remain in the same division. Eastern Conference clubs want traditional rivalries to remain. A realignment suggestion of having the Penguins and Flyers in different conferences didn’t get enough votes.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green has a strained groin according to sources. He won’t travel with the team to Nashville.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Brent Seabrook, who was injured over the weekend, traveled with the team to Vancouver. If Seabrook can’t go, Sean O’Donnell or Sami Lepisto would step in.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Talk that the Flames are swamped with interest in Rene Bourque is manufactured according to a source within the club. Flames GM Jay Feaster wouldn’t talk specifically about Bourque, but did say it’s getting harder to find trading partners.
“In the post-lockout world, it just isn’t about whether you like a player or not,” Feaster said.
“It’s also about the term (years) of the contract, the current cash requirement and the AAV (average annual value or cap hit), and that’s before you ever start talking about what you want or need in return for the player.”
- Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are finally getting healthy. Only Radek Martinek, Mark Dekanich and Kristian Huselius remain out. Huselius could be back in two weeks.
- BD Galiof via twitter: Galiof thinks the Islanders should make an addition by subtraction deal to send a message and to create room for more kids.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur will start for the Devils on Wednesday.
Chiarelli working the phones … Larsson and Landeskog staying … Scouting the Oils-Caps … Stajan may be a scratch again
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 28th, 2011
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Bruins are struggling and GM Peter Chiarelli may not have much of a choice but to make some changes to his roster. They are currently last in the Eastern Conference. In an email Chiarelli said that he’s “diligently” calling other teams to see what’s available. He is likely looking for scoring help. Benoit Pouliot and Jordan Caron were given the opportunity to replace Michael Ryder and Mark Recchi, but neither one has a point. David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton have struggled. They may have trouble finding a team that is eager to help out the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Dupont mentions Kyle Turris, but notes that he’d need at least 2 weeks of training before he’d be in game shape.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello confirmed that 2011 1st round pick Adam Larsson will remain with the team. Since Larsson has played 2 years in the Swedish Elite League, he is eligible to be sent to the AHL at any point during the season.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Gabriel Landeskog will remain with the Avalanche, and will carry a $3.575 million cap hit. His cap hit is important as they needed it to stay about the salary floor. He has 4 goals in 9 games, and is playing on the 3rd line with Ryan O’Reilly and Daniel Winnik.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks forward Jason Blake is recovering from tendon damage to his left wrist, and hopes to begin the rehab process soon. “You like to think you’re a fast healer if you put the time in off the ice as much as you can to rehabilitate your hand and try to get your strength back,” Blake said. “Hopefully you can come back sooner. That’s my goal. “Obviously I’d like to be playing the first week of January. If that’s feasible, I don’t know.”
- Dan Tencer via twitter: There were 16 scouts from 15 teams at the Oilers-Capitals game last night.
- Randy Sportak of the Calagary Sun: Flames forward Matt Stajan might be back in the lineup tonight after being a healthy scratch against the Avs. He was practicing between Tim Jackman and Tom Kostopoulos. Stajan is in the 2nd year of a 4 year, $14 million deal. Flames coach Brent Sutter may go with 11 forwards and 7 defenseman again, which may mean that Stajan sits again.
Flames rumors … CBJ issues … GMs may look for mandatory visors … Doughty this week is possible … Connolly stays … Whitney injured again
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 26th, 2011
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis laughs at the rumor that Daniel Alfredsson could interest the Flames at some point. The Flames do have an interest in Coyotes holdout Kyle Turris. A source close to the situation has said that the Flames are one of six teams to make a ‘significant’ offer. Coyotes GM Don Maloney is still saying he doesn’t have plans to trade him. Rene Bourque is also front and center in trade rumors lately. Flames GM Jay Feaster continues to tell other GMs that Mark Giordano is not available. Francis doesn’t see the Flames trading Jarome Iginla. Ollie Jokinen wants to re-sign with the Flames. Tim Jackman and Tom Kostopoulos are UFAs and could draw minor interest at some point. David Moss won’t be traded unless he wants out. They would love to move Matt Stajan and his $3.5 million salary in a package, but it’s unlikely that there is anyone else on their roster to draw that much interest.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Blue Jackets are having issues on and off the ice. There are reports that they are losing $25 million a season, and there is talk about the long-term survival of the franchise. Their last few home games have only drawn 9,000 fans.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Two high profile GMs have said they’d like to see more players starting next season.
“Visors should be mandatory for all defencemen, at the least,” Burke said, adding that blueliners are at “a far greater risk” of being hit in the face by a puck because of all the deflections in front of the net.
“I’d want to hear the GMs out on the larger topic [of everyone having to wear them], but I think I would support Homer.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets won’t be pulling off any blockbuster deals because the team is off to a slow start. They may pull off some smaller deals along the way, but finding a trade partner who isn’t trying to fleece is hard to find. Most teams aren’t looking to get rid of 30 goal scorers and many teams would like to upgrade their blueline.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was wearing a no-contact jersey again at practice yesterday. When asked yesterday when Doughty will see the doctor next, Murray said, “The opportunity will probably be tonight, to see the doctor at the rink. We plan on taking him with us on the road trip, kind of shooting for the end of the week here as a possibility.”
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman confirmed that they will be keeping Brett Connolly and won’t be sending him back to junior.
- Shaun Starr via twitter: Canadiens Max Pacioretty has a partially torn ligament in his wrist. Starr has been told surgery is unlikely. Renaud Lavoie via twitter: It’s a partial tear, no breaks, deep bruise. He could be back in the lineup this week.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers coach Tom Renny says that Ryan Whitney has a sprained knee but it’s not significant. A few days and he should be fine.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild forward Guilaume Latendresse is bothered by a wonky groin again, and look for the Wild to be cautious with him. Dany Heatley and Greg Zanon are also bothered by groin issues. Brett Bulmer will play in his 9th game on Thursday and likely won’t be returned to junior.
- Luke DeCock via twitter: Scouts in Carolina last night were the Blue Jackets, Flyers and Penguins. The Canes play the Flyers and Pens in the next 3 weeks. They don’t play the Blue Jackets.
Brodeur out 7-10 days … Flames may be better off keeping Bourque … Seguin to 1st line … Flyers made need to make move … Kadri demoted, then recalled … Starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 20th, 2011
- Chris Botta via twitter: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur will be out 7-10 days as he rehabs his shoulder.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster declines to comment on trade rumors involving his team. In the past he has said that anyone not named Iginla, Kiprusoff, Giordano and maybe Glencross are fair game. Rene Bourque’s name has come up recently. He carries a $3.33 million cap hit for this year and the next 4 years, and has a modified no-trade clause. They may be better off to keep him unless they can get a something that would help the team now and in the future. Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Olli Jokinen have also been in the rumors, but Jokinen has been one of their more consistent forwards so far.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Tyler Seguin found himself on the top line at yesterday’s Bruins practice: Milan Lucic-Chris Kelly-Tyler Seguin, Brad Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Nathan Horton, Jordan Caron-David Krejci/Rich Peverley-Benoit Pouliot, Daniel Paille-Gregory Campbell-Shawn Thornton.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Jets rookie Mark Scheifele scored his first NHL goal last night against the Maple Leafs, but the decision on whether to send him to back to junior or keep him up for the year is fast approaching. Next Thursday will likely mark his 9th game, if he plays 10, he can’t go back. There are indications that the Jets don’t want to rush him along, so he may end up back with Barrie.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: After recalling Brayden Schenn yesterday, the Flyers are extremely close to the salary cap ceiling. At some point they are going to have to shed some major salary if they want to have some flexibility at the trade deadline.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Wojtek Wolski is in the final year of his deal, he carries $3.8 million cap hit, and appears to “becoming an unmistakable object of derision by coach John Tortorella.” Wolski has been out for 3 games with a groin issue. When Tortorella was asked if Wolski would be in against the Flames, Torts responded: “We can’t get him out of the tub.” When asked if it was part of treatment for the groin, he responded: “I guess.” Marty Biron might get the start tonight.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs assigned Nazem Kadri to the AHL yesterday. Tim Wharnsby via twitter: Nazem Kadri will now replace the injured Colby Armstrong.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Craig Anderson will get the start in net for the Senators.
- Tracey Myers via twitter: Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Roberto Luongo will start in net for the Canucks against the Predators.

Sunday notes on Flames, Leafs, Canucks, Blake, Doughty, Connolly, Mueller, Hemsky and McDonald
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 16th, 2011
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: 2 league sources are saying that the Flames GM Jay Feaster is desperately trying to move contracts off their books. The Flames may be shopping Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and David Moss, but it may be tough finding someone wanting those contract. Stajan has 3 years left on his 4 year, $14 million deal. Ollie Jokinen, Hagman and Moss could be deadline rentals. Despite having the 5th highest payroll, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat. A league executive, “There’s actually a lot of teams talking for this time of year. I don’t think you’re going to see anything shake down until the end of the month.” Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is checking out interest in Carl Gunnarson and Tyler Bozak. The Leafs would like to make room for defenseman Keith Aulie and they don’t plan on sending Jake Gardiner to the minors. Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been working the phones looking to move a defenseman, possibly Keith Ballard, and not goalie. One league executive hasn’t heard Kyle Turris’ name mentioned in trade talks.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks winger Jason Blake could be out 3 months after suffering a lacerated tendon just above his wrist. He will have surgery on Monday.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will be out 7 to 10 days with an upper-body injury. Kings GM Dean Lombardi said it didn’t involve Doughty’s head.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: The Lightning will have to decide soon if they want to burn a contract year with 2010 1st round pick Brentt Connolly. Connolly has played in 5 games so far, they play their 10th game on Oct. 27th.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson would like to see the NHL entry draft switch the drafting age from 18 to 19, “For the most part, 18- and 19-year-old players are not close to being ready for the NHL. If the draft goes back a year, it slows down the process at every level. Right now, everyone is on a treadmill to get there.” Only 6% of 18 year olds play in the NHL the year they are draft.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller is listed as day-to-day and is skating, but the Avs have contected a concussion expert who has dealt with Mueller in the past.
- John Shannon via twitter: Oilers Ales Hemsky will be out 3 to 4 weeks with a strained shoulder.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: The Blues will update Andy McDonald’s status on Monday. Andy Strickland via twitter: Initially prognosis doesn’t look great and Stickland wouldn’t be shocked if he’s put on the IR.
Crosby skates … Kane out 6-8 weeks … Campoli done with ‘Hawks … Nothing going on with Parise’s contract … Larsson signs with Devils
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 16th, 2011
- Larry Fine in the Globe and Mail: Sidney Crosby has begun on-ice workouts. Crosby has been training in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s still unknown if he’ll be ready for training camp, and he hasn’t been given clearance by doctors for physical contact.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Kane will require surgery on his left wrist. He had tests on his wrist during the playoffs, but it didn’t reveal a fracture. Kane is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks.
“I thought it was getting better, but it’s in an area where no blood can get to the fracture and something I’m going to have fixed for later down the road,” said Kane, who wore a brace. “It’s one of those things, I fix it out now [and] it’s not going to affect me when the season comes.
The Blackhawks have decided to walk away from RFA Chris Campoli, who has an arbitration hearing on August 3rd.
“It was apparent from the beginning that their salary demands were not in concert with where we see him fitting in our team,” Bowman said. “The dollar [amount] that they’re looking for is not agreeable with our mixture. If we don’t trade him, then he will become an unrestricted free agent.”
The Blackshawks have signed defenseman Sami Lepisto to a one year deal. They also re-signed Micheal Frolik to a 3 year, $7 million deal.
- Adam Jahns via twitter: GM Bowman on Campoli: “We went back and forth and made him our best offer and it didn’t work for them.”
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames have re-signed Brendan Morrison to a 1 year deal worth $850,000 is base salary and up to $400,000 in bonuses. The Flames are now close to the cap, and have too many forwards. They may look at stashing someone in the minors. The best case scenario for the Flames would be for another team to believe in Niklas Hagman or Matt Stajan and would send a draft pick back.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Yesterday morning Zach Parise sent Gulitti an email saying that nothing was going on regarding his contract.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Adam Larsson signed a 3 year entry-level contract with the NJ Devils. The deal does not include any performance bonuses. Larsson made the decision to sign a deal without performance bonuses, he did get a signing bonus. Lamorielllo on Larsson: “That’s a decision the player made to be part of the Devils and not to be any different than anyone else in that locker room.” Lamoriello added that they and Larsson expect him to play in either the NHL or AHL next season. His deal carries a $925,000 cap hit.
- Arthur Staple via twitter:The Islanders and RFA Josh Baily are still talking about a new deal.
Updates on Jagr, Kennedy, Stamkos, Ponikarovsky, and the Hurricanes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 17th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun spoke with Red Wings GM Ken Holland who confirmed he has spoken with Jaromir Jagr’s camp, only preliminary at this point. LeBrun spoke with Jagr who confirmed interest in coming back to NHL. Petr Svoboda, Jagr’s agent, confirms that they’ve spoken with the Red Wings and Canadiens.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Jagr’s camp has reportedly been in contact with the Capitals and Rangers. The Penguins are not interested at this time.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Ray Shero doesn’t have any deadline for re-signing winger Tyler Kennedy. He has no plans of trading his rights if nothing is finalized by July 1st. Re-signing Kennedy is still a priority for Shero despite not making much progress on a deal.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: No players were put on waivers today, may happen tomorrow.
- Eric Francis via twitter: Niklas Hagman and Ales Kotalik are buyout possibilities for the Flames, but most likely buried in the minors. No team would likely touch Matt Stajan if he was put on waivers.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The LA Kings remain ‘intrigued’ by Alexei Ponikarovsky, despite not having a good season.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is confident that they can re-sign Steven Stamkos.
“It is our intention to resign him, but he is restricted and we have the ability to match any potential offer sheet that might be put forward and we are in position to do that,” Yzerman said. “So, we are quite confident that Steven will be playing for the Lightning, and that’s our goal and we haven’t explored anything else and we don’t intend to look at it any other way.”
Discussions are being held with representatives from 3 of their free agents; Eric Brewer, Sean Bergenheim and Dwayne Roloson.
“I’ve been in contact with all their agents, in some cases we have exchanged numbers and, in a couple of other cases with our UFAs, we’ve said we are going to see where we are with a couple of players and then we’ll get back and let them know where we stand,” Yzerman said. “And that obviously has to take place in the next couple of weeks here.”
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes re-signed defenseman Jay Harrison to a 2 year, $1.4 million deal. They are not close to re-signing UFAs Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, and Joni Pitkanen.
“With Pitkanen, Jokinen and LaRose, we know what their position is,” Rutherford said, referring to their financial demands. “I’ve given our position. It does not appear we will be able to sign them.”
GM Jim Rutherford hasn’t had any substantive talks with Eric Cole, “We expected to hear something by now, but we have not,” Rutherford said.“Things are not moving as we had hoped, and it’s getting closer to July 1,” Rutherford said Thursday. “We may have to look at other options. It may be easier to trade for players with existing contracts. Then we would know what we would be spending next year.
“I still prefer to sign some of our players. If not, we will look at a trade.
They will not look at trading their 12th overall pick at next weeks draft, nor any of their top prospects like Zac Dalpe, Zach Boychuk or Drayson Bowman. Rutherford will look to upgrade their top 4 defenseman. Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff could be possibilities if they hit the open market.
Pronger injured … Callahan breaks hand … Sutter would do Phaneuf trade again, um what? Sturm targets next Wednesday
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Rumors on December 16th, 2010
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger suffered a lower body injury in the 2nd period last night, and did not make it out for the 3rd period.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: New York Rangers forward Ryan Callahan broke his hand while blocking a shot. Early word is that he could miss 6 weeks. Todd White will likely return to the lineup tonight in place of Callahan.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Darryl Sutter says he would make the Dion Phaneuf trade over again (in case you forgot the deal was Dion Phaneuf, Freddie Sjostrom, and Keith Aulie for Matt Stajan, Niclas Hagman, Ian White and Jamal Mayers). Sutter said if they didn’t trade Dion, they would have lost Rene Bourque and Mark Giordano. Bourque signed for six years, $20 million and Giordano signed for five years, 20.1 million. To me this doesn’t make sense. Phanuef and Sjostrom carry about a $7.25 million cap hit this year. Stajan is at $3.5 million (crazy deal he signed this summer), Hagman is a $3 million cap hit, and they had signed White to a 1 year, $2.999 million deal before trading him to Carolina. According to my math, that’s almost $9.5 million in salary they added compared $7.5 million heading to Toronto (and I’m not including the money they wasted on signing Jokinen).
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Taylor Hall’s role with the Edmonton Oilers may expand to include penalty killing. Oilers coach Tom Renney almost did so on Tuesday against the Leafs but decided against it. The Oilers struggles this year allows them to try things they may not otherwise have done.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Christian Ehrhoff remains ‘status quo’ with regards to his concussion, he’s missed the last 4 games.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Marco Sturm finally joined his new Kings teammates yesterday for practice. He practiced on the 4th line as he still recovers from knee surgery. He is targeting next Wednesday for his LA Kings debut against the Oilers.
- Thrash, the Atlanta Thrashers mascot steals team zamboni and goes for a joyride.

More on Brad Richards … Leino’s contract may have to wait … Savard passes Neuro test
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Audio, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 24th, 2010
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Everyone knows by now that Richards is a UFA at seasons end, the team is without owners, the Stars would to sign him, he wouldn’t mind staying, and he might be traded at the trade deadline. Joe Nieuwendyk had that is say, “I’ve talked to NHL Commissioner] Gary Bettman about the issues, and I did ask that if the lenders are carrying us to summer time, then we have some important things we need to talk about with them,” he said. “I think the lenders are also aware how important this could be for our team.” In my opinion, if they could get Richards to sign a cap friendly deal in the $6.5 million range, it could be a plus for a potential owner. It’s not a crazy number to have your number one player at, and I’d rather a Stars roster with him on it than without. Their cap number can easily stay below $50 million with Richards signed.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Glen Sather won’t be putting a together a package of his young players (Dubinsky, Staal, Del Zotto or Callahan) for Brad Richards. If/when Richards becomes a UFA on July 1st, the Rangers will definitely look at him. Sather will monitor the Richards situation during the year, and especially at the trade deadline, if they feel they are one piece away they might take a closer look.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers may not be able to sign Ville Leino to a contract extension due to the league rule that they cannot exceed this years salary cap number ($59.4 million) when it comes to next years salaries. So far they have $57.6 million tied into 18 players. If they sign him to under $1.8 million, they would be able to add him. Leino’s agent met with the Flyers last week, and both sides realize there is plenty of time to get a deal done. Dan Carcillo (sprained MCL) is scheduled to skate today and is at least a week away.
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Gordon thinks the Blues should keep an eye on the Bruins situation when they need to start unloading some contracts. With TJ Oshie out for an extended period of time, and David Perron still suffering post concussion symptoms, they might be need some help upfront.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Marc Savard passed his Neuro-psych tests yesterday and now has clearance for contact.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames will know the morning is Matt Stajan is able to go against the Devils (click here to see Stajan laid out by Staal if you missed it). Robyn Regehr is day-to-day with a lower body injury.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: Mike Green on his recent injury, “It is more of something that has been bothering me in the past and it is not getting better.”
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks traded forward Ryan Carter to the Carolina Hurricanes for prospects Matt Kennedy and Stefan Chaput. In 18 games Carter registered 3 points and 22 PIMs, and cleared waivers before they traded him. Carolina plans to use him as their 4th line center. Kennedy and Chaput will report to Syracuse. Anaheim also traded Stu Bickel to the NY Rangers for Nigel Williams.
- Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks have put Peter Schaefer on waivers yesterday. Teams have until 9 am this morning to claim him, he’ll likely be assigned to Manitoba if clears. Jeff Tambellini will likely be recalled. The question will be if the veteran Schaefer reports or not.
- Audio Ottawa Citizen: Writers James Gordon, Wayne Scanlan and Ken Warren discuss the Ottawa Senators.
- Fan 960 Audio: Darren Dreger and Rob Kerr talk Marc Staal’s hit on Matt Stajan among other issues in the NHL.
- Fan 590 Audio: from Monday. Colin Campbell on with Bob McCown and John Shannon discussing “topics such as Dean Warren, the recent e-mail scandal, being involved in his son’s games, NHL officiating as well as the league’s disciplining process and policies.”
Neuvirth, Green and Sloan injured for Caps … Sabres injury notes … Video of Stajan getting hammered by Staal, Legal or not?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 23rd, 2010
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Michal Neuvirth is day-to-day with a lower body injury after tweaking something yesterday morning. Semyon Varlamov was recalled but didn’t get his skates until the second period, the Capitals were given permission to switch backup goalies during the game, Braden Holtby started. Mike Green did not play the final 13 minutes of the 3rd, Tyler Sloan left in the 1st period, more will be known this morning
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Rob Niedermayer had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out 2 weeks. Ryan Miller practiced after resting his injured groin over the weekend. Drew Stafford and his injured shoulder practice but did not take contact, he could be available this weekend. Jochen Hecht skated after practice, he’s nursing an upper body injury, but is expect to be able to go tomorrow night. Tim Connolly left in the middle of practice and is questionable. The Sabres recalled Luke Adam and Colin Stuart from Portland of the AHL.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: The Tampa Bay Lightning should know Wednesday morning if Simon Gagne will go versus the Rangers, said to be “very probable”.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Stephen Weiss aggravated an ankle injury Saturday night and was pulled from the game as a precaution, it isn’t serious.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Mirtle posts a great quote from Dallas Stars coach Marc Crawford after their loss to the Maple Leafs, “The positive thing is there are a billion people in China that don’t know that we played terrible tonight.”
- Calgary Flames forward Matt Stajan is crushed by NY Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Rule 48 stats: states: “A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted?” In my opinion it is a clean hit. I’m sure the league will review it.Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald notes what some people on twitter were saying, with most thinking it was clean.
