Parise meets with agents, many think he won’t re-sign … Leafs notes on Reimer, Grabovski and Lombardi … Luongo practicing … KHL will desire Semin
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 23rd, 2011
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: On Friday, Zach Parise met with Don Meehan in Tampa. Then, his lead representative Wade Arnott showed up to discuss his next contract, but not to strategize. Most believe he’ll not be back with the Devils next year due to several factors. 1. The Devils financial picture may not allow them to offer a competitive contract or surround him with the players needed to make a run at the cup. 2. The Devils haven’t made it past the 1st round since he’s been there. 3. He has to split prime ice time on the left wing with Ilya Kovalchuk, who’ll be around for 13 more years. 4. Newark is not Florida, nor California nor near his home in Minnesota. 5. Because of the reasons above, Lou Lamoriello would hate to lose Parise for nothing. “We want Zach Parise to be here. He wants to be here. We’ll do everything we can,” Lamoriello said.
- Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal traveled with the team to Florida. There is no update on his status though. He was cleared for “light physical activity” last Thursday. Anton Stralman, who’s been a healthy scratch since signing with the club on Nov. 5th, practiced with the first power play unit.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer talked with the media yesterday for the first time in a month. His concussion-like symptoms are almost gone, and he’s hoping to be back soon.
“When it’s concussion-like symptoms and you have to err on the side of caution, the only thing you can’t do is get your heart rate up. You’re just kind of sitting on your butt for a month.”
Reimer will take part in his first full practice on Thursday. James Reimer audio.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo was back practicing with the team yesterday. Luongo is hoping to be back in uniform on Wednesday.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: There are no indications that the Blue Jackets are about to trade Derick Brassard. Sure they’d move him, but not a big market right now.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: It’s believed that Steve Mason has a mild concussion, but will not be out long-term. He didn’t travel with the team yesterday, Curtis Sanford will start tonight with Allen York as the backup. The Jackets remain optimistic that Mason can return this weekend against the Sabres.
- Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs 2nd line of Kulemin-Connolly-MacArthur have played well lately, so when Mikhail Grabovski returns, he could give the team some nice depth as their 3rd line center.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Leafs coach Ron Wilson guessed that forward Matthew Lombardi is 3 1/2 to 4 weeks away.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: The KHL would view the signing of Alexander Semin as a major PR coup. He would get at least $7 million a year in the KHL.
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: Yerdon believes there is a market for Semin in the NHL. He can score 40 goals. An up tempo offensive team should desire him.
Alexander Semin, Anton Stralman, Columbus Blue Jackets, Curtis Sanford, James Reimer, Marc Staal, Matthew Lombardi, Mikhail Grabovski, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Roberto Luongo, Steve Mason, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, Zach Parise

Nash not getting traded … Carter didn’t ask for a trade … Canes shopping Kaberle … Omark and Gagner Leafs rumors … Jagr, Lombardi and Nabokov injured
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 18th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson has never brought up Rick Nash’s name in trade talks. Other teams have obviously asked about Nash, but were quickly turned down.
“Rick has never asked for a trade, contrary to what has been reported,” his agent Joe Resnick told ESPN.com on Thursday. “Rick is focused on trying to turn things around in Columbus and help the team get some wins.”
Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has admitted he’s looking for a goalie:
“We’re seeing what’s available and seeing what the price tag is,” GM Brian Burke told ESPN.com on Thursday afternoon. “Obviously nothing has tickled our fancy yet.”
James Reimer has been listed as day-to-day for weeks and still hasn’t started skating. Burke added: “so at some point we have to get a goaltender in here to bridge the gap until he’s healthy.”
Ryan Suter’s agent, Neil Sheehy, on contract talks with the Predators: “It’s ongoing; there won’t be a deal while I’m here in town.” “We’re continuing to talk, and that’s about all I can say at this point.”
- RDS through google translate: RDS reported that Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter has already asked for a trade. Carter has missed time with a foot injury and has only played in 7 games. Renaud Lavoie of RDSthrough google translate: Teams looking to improve will likely have asked about Carter. The Blue Jackets don’t want to get rid of him. Lavoie contacted Carter’s agent, Rick Curran, who said that Carter didn’t ask for a trade despite the rumors.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: This weekend could determine the fate of Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice. Sources are saying that GM Jim Rutherford is looking to trade for a forward and is dangling defenseman Tomas Kaberle and Bryan Allen, even though Joni Pitkanen is out with an injury.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers center Sam Gagner keeps being mentioned in trade rumors, one involving Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson or possibly landing with the Blackhawks, reuniting him with his London Knights linemate, Patrick Kane.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson doesn’t think the Oilers need to trade for a defenseman even with Cam Barker being out till March and with Ryan Whitney having injury issues the last year. Whitney is expected to be back in the lineup next week. When Whitney returns they’ll have 7 defenseman, so they may not have a need for a Cody Franson. The Leafs are hurting for a forward due to recent injuries. Linus Omark is trade chip for Oilers GM Steve Tambellini. Matheson wonders if Omark and a 2nd round pick could get Franson? Burke may rather have Gagner than Omark, but he’s had ankle and back issues so far this season. Other defenseman that aren’t playing much that the Oilers could look at are: Jim Vandermeer (SJ), Matt Walker (PHI), Shaone Morrisson (BUF), Jason Strudwick or their prospect Colten Teubert.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill was admitted to a hospital in Montreal yesterday with an undisclosed virus.
- Frank Servalli via twitter: Flyers winger Jaromir Jagr left last night’s game with a lower-body injury.
- Jonas Seigel via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi was injured in last night’s game and left the arena with his arm in a sling.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Islanders goalie Nabokov suffered a groin injury in last night’s game and will be re-evaluated today.
- Adam Jahns via twitter: Brent Seabrook is out tonight and probably won’t play until they head to California. Michael Frolik is questionable against Calgary.
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: Ryan Kesler has a stiff shoulder. Keith Ballard has back spasms. Mason Raymond has been cleared for contact.
Brent Seabrook, Bryan Allen, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Cody Franson, Colten Teubert, Columbus Blue Jackets, Evgeni Nabokov, James Reimer, Jaromir Jagr, Jason Strudwick, Jeff Carter, Jim Vandermeer, Keith Ballard, Linus Omark, Mason Raymond, Matt Walker, Matthew Lombardi, Michael Frolik, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Rick Nash, Ryan Kesler, Ryan Suter, Sam Gagner, San Jose Sharks, Shaone Morrisson, Tomas Kaberle, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on October 4th, 2011
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will start the season with the Oilers. RNH was skating with Ales Hemskyand Taylor Hall.
“Ryan will start the season with us,” said Renney. “We all understand the parameters there that he can operate within before we have to make a real concrete decision. Again, we’ll do it a game at a time, but he has had a very good camp.”
When Sam Gagne returns from injury, Anton Lander could be sent to the AHL. Lennart Petrell could be the casualty when Ben Eager returns from a concussion.
- Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins have their roster set at 23 players. They sent Alexandre Picard, Brian Strait and Jason Williams to the AHL, Joe Morrow to back junior, and put Sidney Crosby (concussion), Dustin Jeffrey (knee), Nick Petersen (concussion), Robert Bortuzzo (knee) and Boris Valabik (knee) on the IR. Defenseman Brooks Orpik could be close to returning.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks cut their roster to 27 yesterday by sending Jimmy Hayes, Marcus Kruger, Peter LeBlanc and Brandon Pirri and Dylan Olsen to the AHL. They have 16 forwards, 8 defenseman and 3 goalies still in camp. Viktor Stalberg will likely be put on the IR. Jeremy Morin and Philippe Paradis are possible candidates to be sent to the AHL.
- Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: The Islanders placed both Nino Niederreiter and Trevor Gillies on the IR with groin strains. Niederreiter was expected to make the team, and not be heading back to junior. He had been playing on the top line with John Tavares and Matt Moulson. The Isles still have 26 players on their roster. Jay Pandolfo is still in camp on an invite.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators forward Mike Fisher practiced with teammates for the first time yesterday after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. Fisher did say that he won’t be ready for the season opener, and has not been cleared for contact yet. Defenseman Ryan Ellis was assigned to Milwaukee of the AHL so he can better understand the pro game. The Preds put Kyle Wilson on waivers.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks assigned Justin Braun, Benn Ferriero and John McCarthy to Worcester of the AHL. Goalie Antti Niemi is looking like he’ll be able to go for the season opener. The Sharks still have 28 players on their camp roster, Antero Niittymaki and James Sheppard will be put the IR, leaving 3 moves that will have to be made.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Matt Ducheneis entering the final year of his entry level deal, and is likely to get a nice raise.
“If I take care of business, that’s a reward. That’s not something that you aim for. It’s not a destination. It’s a byproduct,” he said matter of factly.
Duchene has 1 more point in his short career than Islanders John Tavares, who recently signed a 6 year, $33 million deal. Duchene agent, Pat Brisson (Tavares’ agent as well), hasn’t talked extension with the Avalanche yet.
- James Mirtle via twitter: The Red Wings have signed Fabian Brunnstrom to a 1 year, 2-way deal.

Sunday notes involving Crosby, Maple Leafs, Whitney, Oilers, Waivers, Rangers, Gudbranson, Smaby and a Shanahan video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Suspensions, NHL Videos on October 2nd, 2011
- AP in the Globe and Mail: Penguins forward Sidney Crosby is expected to miss the Penguins home opener next week. Crosby has been practicing with the team since Sept. 17th, but hasn’t been cleared for contact yet.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are looking to package some of their depth to acquire an established player. They have too many forwards and defenseman. They lack high-level offensive and physical players. Matthew Lombardi may be better suited for Phil Kessel’s center as he is a left handed shot, Tim Connolly and Kessel are both right handed shots.
- Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Star: Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur was suspended for the last nights pre-season game and 2 regular season games for his hit on Justin Abdelkader on Friday night. (Shanahan video at bottom of the post)
- Kevin McGran of hte Toronto Star: Leafs coach Ron Wilson knows what the Leafs opening roster will look like. GM Brian Burke said that if Jake Gardiner makes the team, he’d likely be paired with Mike Komisarek. McGran says that Komisarek is a top 6 for sure. McGran doesn’t think the Leafs should keep either Jay Rosehill or Colton Orr on the roster.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Ray Whitney’s name keeps popping up as a possible Bruins, and it’s not the first time. The 39 year old will be a UFA at season’s end, and is coming off a 57 point season. Once Marc Savard is put on LTIR, the Bruins would have the space for him. Adam Larsson looks to have made the Devils, and could see time on the top power play unit.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson wonders if Oilers could trade one of their young forwards for a puck moving defenseman. They need one with Ryan Whitney hurt.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Oilers Taylor Fedun had a metal rod inserted into his broken femur. Icing will now become an NHL hot topic.
- David Satriano of the NY Post: The Rangers cut their roster to 25. Staal to skate with AHL team … Lombardi could play this weekend … Notes on Komisarek, Rundblad, Brunnstrom, Jackman, Foster and Stalberg
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 30th, 2011
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal will skate with Rangers AHL team in Connecticut today. Staal has been suffering from intermittent headaches this summer, stemming from a Jan. 22nd concussion after taking a hit from his brother. It’s still not known if he’ll be able to join the Rangers in Europe for their season opener, or in their 2nd game.
- Lance Hornby and Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: It’s looking like Matthew Lombardi will get into an exhibition game this weekend.
“If I’m feeling 100% and confident, there’s a good chance I could play,” Lombardi said of facing the Detroit Red Wings in the coming home-and-home pre-season games. “But if we’re not sure and maybe things aren’t going as well, then we’ll make a decision. I don’t think it’s a negative either way. The progress has been great (far ahead of off-season projections). Whether I get in this week or on the next little while (Toronto opens the regular season on Oct. 6), it’s great.”
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek is in better shape this year, and may have cemented his spot in the top 6. Koshan mentions there has been speculation from the outside that Komisarek and his $4.5 million salary could be sent to the Marlies. (Problem is it sounds like he has a no-movement and limited trade clause, so he would probably have to agree to be sent down, which he wouldn’t do.)
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: David Rundblad is close to making the Senators, but if he doesn’t, he has made noise about heading back to Sweden for the season. Defenseman Erik Karlsson can relate and had this to say:
“It’s up to (Rundblad) and management to see how close he is to making the team and if it’s worth it for him to go down there or to go back to Sweden and come back next year. If you want to make the team, you’ve got to stay here.”
“If you go home, you’ve got to wait until next year to make the team and even then you may have to go down (to the AHL) anyways,” said Karlsson. “It’s just a personal thing — what’s best for you and what you think is best for you.”
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland on Fabian Brunnstrom:
“Right now, he looks like he’s playing his way into a contract. We’ll determine if he’s played his way onto the roster. There’s no rush to do anything now, so we’ll address the situation on Monday. But he has stated a pretty darn good case for a contract and for the roster, especially considering the injury to Jan Mursak.”
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blues defenseman Barrett Jackman is entering the final year of his 4 year deal. Neither side is ready to talk contract extension, but both sides think he belongs in St. Louis.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks defenseman Kurtis Foster skated for the first time since having surgery 10 days ago.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg will be out 3 weeks.
Anaheim Ducks, Barrett Jackman, Chicago Blackhawks, David Rundblad, Detroit Red Wings, Erik Karlsson, Fabian Brunnstrom, Kurtis Foster, Marc Staal, Matthew Lombardi, Mike Komisarek, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, Viktor Stalberg

- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers released Michael Nylander and Adam Mair. They have 29 players left in camp, and will likely open the season with 22 players. Still battling for a roster spot are Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo and Tom Sestito.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs are down to 29 in camp after cutting 14 players yesterday. They put Luca Caputi, Jeff Finger, Ryan Hamilton and Mike Zigomanis on waivers. Joe Colburne’s inconsistent play found him among the cuts. Veterans in Trouble: Tyler Bozak is tied to Kyle Turris trade rumors, and a healthy Matthew Lombardi could steal his spot. Mike Komisarek has a limited no-trade clause, is from Long Island, and they need a defenseman. Carl Gunnarsson could be their best overall Dman, but there is no hype about him, and he is a Ferguson draft pick. Matt Lashoff could be the odd man out. On the Bubble: Nazem Kadri chances lessened with Matthew Lombardi getting closer, but he has played well. Matt Frattin may benefit from starting with the Marlies. Jake Gardiner’s play is worthy of a roster spot but numbers may mean he starts with the Marlies. Keith Aulie hasn’t done anything wrong but doesn’t need to clear waivers to be sent to the Marlies. Ben Scrivens needs to play, so he may be better served with the Marlies than as James Reimer’s backup.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Ducks cut 6 players yesterday, putting their camp roster down to 37. Emerson Etem was sent back to junior, with Mark Bell, Rick Schofield, Matt Kennedy, Jake Newton and Mathieu Carle going to Syracuse of the AHL. Bell and Carle need to clear waivers.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: The Wild cut 17 players yesterday from their camp. Jed Ortmeyer, Warren Peters and Jarod Palmer were among the reassigned.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Blues cut their roster down to 29. Their likely is only 1 spot available with Ryan Reaves possibly leading a group of Chris Porter, Evgeny Grachev, Adam Cracknell and Philip McRae. Jonathan Cheechoo was among the cuts. Strickland thinks that Brian Elliott’s experience gives him the nod over Ben Bishop. Scott Nichol, rehabbing from shoulder surgery, has yet to get into a pre-season game but could get into their remaining 3 games.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals cut 6 players yesterday, putting them at 29: 17 forwards, 10 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. Braden Holtby, Matt Ford and Patrick Wellar were sent to the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Christian Hanson, Ryan Potulny and Danny Richmond need to clear waivers before they can be assigned to Hershey.

- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: James Wisniewski has been suspended indefinitely pending a Monday phone hearing.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Sam Gagner blocked a shot with his left ankle, then crashed into the boards. He was limping after the game and is listed as day-to-day.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Without Ryan Whitney, the Oilers may need to add a puck moving defenseman. “There are too many Oiler defenceman into the double-clutch mode, not willing to risk a headman pass even if the worst thing that happens is an icing and a face-off in their end.” Bryan McCabe and Chris Campoli could be options, for now they will stick with what they have.

- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: The Flyers cut more players yesterday dropping their camp number to 38.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche cut 6 players yesterday dropping their camp number to 34. Among the cuts was 2011 1st round pick Duncan Siemens, who’ll be heading back to junior.
