Flyers sign Coburn … Maple Leafs goalie options … Would Iginla seek Cup elsewhere? Chorney to waivers, Oilers interested?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 9th, 2011
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn signs a 4 year, $18 million contract extension.
- Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer has been told the Maple Leafs may be looking at Marty Turco if James Reimer is out long-term. David Alter via twitter: Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov could also be an option for the Maple Leafs.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Fialkov thinks that Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen could be a good fit in Toronto. It’s obvious that Jacob Markstrom is ready for NHL duty. Panthers GM Dale Tallon won’t just give Clemmensen away though.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Flames captain Jarome Iginla wants to win the Cup, and he’d like to do it with the Flames. He thinks the Flames have a shot, as any team that makes the playoffs has a legitimate shot. Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun wrote a piece about Ray Bourque and how he left the Bruins for a shot at the Cup with the Avalanche. Demanding a trade to a team doesn’t guarantee that “it’s any better on the other side”
“Absolutely,” Iginla agreed. “There’s probably a couple teams — Washington got off to a great start, Pittsburgh is pretty strong, not even with having [Sidney Crosby] back. But I wouldn’t even say those teams are above the way Colorado and Detroit used to be above us, above the rest of the group. It is a danger, you think, ‘Oh, it’s a better chance,’ but really, you have to be in the playoffs and give yourself those chances. Unfortunately, we’ve missed out on a couple lately. Each year is another chance.”
There is a growing group of people how think the Flames would be better off trading Iginla. Iginla has a no-movement clause so it’s ultimately up to him.
“You know what? The organization year in and year out [has been] committed financially to the cap to spend and give the team a chance,” Iginla said. “That’s important, too. I believe if we’re close and that one player, if you need that, I think they would go for it as opposed to some teams just financially can’t do it. There’s a lot of positives. I just want to get there.”
- Michael Russo via twitter: There will be no supplemental discipline for Nick Johnson’s alleged head butt.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Blues put Taylor Chorney on waivers. The Jets put Ben Maxwell on waivers. Mattias Ritola cleared $125 waivers. Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks the Oilers may put a claim on Chorney, they originally lost him to the Blues.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Bob McKenzie is reporting that the Red Wings are likely moving to the Eastern Conference next year, with the easiest replacement being the Jets. The Stars and Wild are looking to change divisions. The Stars are playing in a division that is out of their time zone. The Wild would like to replace the Wings in the Central. Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis were a combined 1 for 17 in the shootout last year, so it’s not a surprise that they weren’t used on Monday night. With Avery’s demotion and Adam Pardy coming off the IR soon, the Stars will be $300,000 under the salary floor. GM Joe Nieuwendyk has been working the phones, likely for a forward since they are carrying 8 defenseman.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Evgeni Malkin missed his 2nd straight game with a “soreness” according to coach Dan Bylsma. “We do not think it’s a long-term thing, other than just being sore at this point in time,” Bylsma said. Sidney Crosby will have a medical evaluation sometime this week. It’s a routine check-up, but it’s possible he’ll get clearance for contact.

Ritola suspended 2 games … Oilers looking for a Dman … Kings looking for a LWer … Sutter on waivers
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 18th, 2010
- Jeff Marek via twitter: Mattias Ritola was suspended for 2 games for his hit on Matt Moulson.
- TFP staff – The Fourth Period: The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a physical, shutdown defenseman. The Oilers are getting some interest in Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky, but they don’t want to trade either player right now. The LA Kings have been looking for a front line left winger.
- TFP staff – The Fourth Period: With Alexei Ponikarovsky out for 3-4 weeks and Scott Parse out 3-4 months, the LA Kings could be looking for a left winger. Florida Panthers Cory Stillman is in the final year of his deal and could be an option. Erik Cole of the Hurricanes and Dustin Penner could also be targets.
- TFP staff – The Fourth Period: A contract extension for Andrei Markov was apparently close from one report, but that may not be the case. It’s uncertain how things will proceed after his latest injury. The Canadiens are said to want to keep him long-term, and he wants to stay. ” Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, confirmed to TFP that he has not discussed a new contract with Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Carolina Hurricanes have put Brett Sutter on waivers. If Sutter clears waivers he’ll go to Charlotte collecting an AHL salary. Vicki Hall responds to a McKenzie tweet that the Flames are at the 50 contract limit … the Flames would have first chance at claiming him.
- Edmonton Oilers via twitter: Nikolai Khabibulin has been placed on the IR with a groin pull.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: Braden Holtby will get one start in net for the Capitals this weekend. Tom Poti suffered a setback felt worse than original injury.
- Tony Marinaro via twitter: Pekka Rinne will start for the Predators tonight.
- Dmitry Cheshnokov via twitter: Maple Leafs prospect Mikhail Stefanovich is unhappy with Marlies and had this to say to a Belorussian paper,
“Marlies’ coaches keep feeding me with promises that they will trust me more. But games come and everything is left as is. They say ‘Show yourself in practices.’ And we don’t practically have any – only games. Not a lot depends on me. And the head coach doesn’t approach me, doesn’t explain anything to me. There is a feeling he’s on his own wave. Nevertheless, I keep waiting for my chance… If only I was explained the reason of this limited trust. But no one says anything and knows nothing. I prefer to wait for my chance quietly. I haven’t spoken with anyone from Dinamo Minsk yet on the topic of a transfer. I only spoke with my agent. I don’t know how it will turn out. At least I am not against such a development. I would like to prove that I am capable of playing in the KHL.”
3 plays that might be looked at by the NHL for disciplinary action (videos)
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Videos on November 18th, 2010
- Olli Jokinen cross checks Wojtek Wolski at about the 50 second mark. Jokinen should get a game suspension, maybe 2, for this in my opinion. He has a conference call at 11:30 according to Darren Dreger. Video from a Greg Wysynski Yahoo! Sports post.

- Mattias Ritola hits Matt Moulson from behind at about the 17 second mark (click here for video). No hearing is set yet, but one is likely coming according to Darren Dreger.
- Cam Janssen hits Niklas Kronwall. It’s bit of blindside hit and a little late. Don’t see the NHL issuing a suspension here
Stars still looking to trade Ribeiro … Red Wings may still be looking at a couple moves … Could Redden remain with the Rangers?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 9th, 2010
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek thinks the Dallas Stars would still like to trade Mike Ribeiro, but they can’t get the deal they’d like. He thinks they are looking for a top-4 defenseman.
- Ansar Kahn of MLive: The Red Wings have looked at Lukas Krajicek as their 6th defenseman, and may be a better fit than Willie Mitchell, as he’d come at a more affordable price. Mitchell probably wants more money than the Wings have available, and may not be comfortable with being the 5th/6th defenseman and getting less ice time. Andreas Lilja may be a better option than Krajicek, but the Red Wings were offering $1 million, and he was seeking $1.5 million.
- Ansar Kahn of MLive: After the Mike Modano signing, the Red Wings have 15 forwards, so it will likely mean they will have to trade or waive someone. Mattias Ritola or Drew Miller will be the likely candidates to be moved. Khan thinks Miller will be moved. Ritola has a higher offensive upside, and is signed for 3 years, while Miller is on a one year deal.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have about $57.5 million (including Cheechoo and Emery buyouts) committed to 22 players. Their defensive corps currently consists of Sergei Gonchar, Chris Phillips, Filip Kuba, Erik Karlsson, Matt Carkner, Brian Lee and Chris Campoli, with youngster Jared Cowen and Patrick Weircioch waiting in the wings. Brian Lee could be moved. If they are looking to add some toughness to the back-end, Brendan Witt and Willie Mitchell could be options. The Senators may also look to add a top-6 forward through free agency (I didn’t realize there were any top-6 forwards available). If they add another forward, Ryan Shannon could be dealt or sent to the minors.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: With the additions of Alexander Frolov and Todd White, it appears the Rangers may not be planning on having Wade Redden’s salary counting against the cap, possibly waiving him during training camp. Though the Rangers defense may have some question marks that may lead the Rangers to keeping him. Marc Staal still isn’t under contract, Steve Eminger may too expensive for a 7th defenseman, Matt Gilroy may not be progressing as much as the Rangers had hoped, and what if Redden bounces back to his Senators days. The Norweigen Hobbit, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen, who was signed last spring, may find himself in the minors.
- Toronto Sun: Reports are the that Vesa Toskala will be heading to play in Sweden next season. Farjestad may be looking for a goalie since their current goalie, Robin Rahm, tested positive for a banned substance and may be a 2 year ban.
