- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk skated before practice. Coach Peter DeBoer said that he “may” join the morning skate tomorrow and might play on Friday.

- Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke was on the morning show yesterday morning talking about music and the Maple Leafs.
- 98.5 The Sports Hub Audio: Bruins President Cam Neely joined Felger and Mazz to break down the team’s recent slump. Is Neely happy with the job head coach Claude Julien is doing? Will any moves be made? Neely gives us the answers.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks the Maple Leafs have some trade assets that could help the future. Names that might come up at the trade deadline or before are Francois Beauchemin, Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Tomas Kaberle.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: JS Giguere will be off skates for 7 to 10 days.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: The New Jersey Devils season is all but over, 18 points out with no signs of things turning around. Could they look at trading Martin Brodeur to a contender? He has another year left at $5.2 million. Would the Washington Capitals or Tampa Bay Lightning be interested? The LA Kings may look into adding another defenseman before the trade deadline, as Willie Mitchell’s has been unable to remain healthy. He’s played only 15 games and is week-to-week with a knee injury.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Vancouver might trade Kevin Bieksa when Sami Salo returns (it’s still not known exactly when he’ll return). Rick Rypien, who left the Canucks for personal reasons, isn’t expected to be back with the team this season, and it’s possible that he may never return. Former NHLer, current AHLer, Jonathan Cheechoo has a bruised kidney and some internal bleeding. The Islanders may look to trade winger Matt Moulson if he wants more money than they want to give him. The Isles may offer Doug Weight one more kick at the can and send him to a contender if he wants too.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Jordan Staal skated for 30 minutes yesterday with their strength and conditioning coach. He didn’t wear a glove over his surgically repaired hand, nor did he do any stick handling drills. It’s been 50 days since the surgery.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Even though the NY Islanders 3rd sting goal, Nathan Lawson, got the start of Dwayne Roloson, a trade of Roloson is not imminent. Botta thinks the Isles would ask for a 2nd round pick for Roloson if they decide to trade him.
- The Globe and Mail: The New York Islanders have put Rick DiPietro and defenceman Mike Mottau on injured reserve. DiPietro will be eligible to return in 7 days. Mottau will have surgery on his hip and will be out the remainder of the season.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Milan Hedjuk missed his 6th straight game due to a groin injury.
- Mike Vogel via twitter: Washington Capitals winger Matt Bradley has a broken finger and will miss 2-4 weeks.
- Yesterday @jimbalsillie tweeted “Hi again, social friends! Very early morning. Nashville bound today! And not to learn how to write a country song. Stay tuned.” Later on Bob McKenzie let the world know it was a fake account and to get back to Christmas shopping.
- Matt Cooke’s elbow to Keith Yandle from Sunday night. Yandle called for a 5 game suspension. What do you think of it?

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Things are not well on the Island and they potentially could get worse, LeBrun … “My biggest concern if I were an Islanders fan is what John Tavares and his powerful agent Pat Brisson (Crosby, Toews, Kane) will think once the star forward’s entry-level contract is up in July 2012. Your top priority right now must be to make sure you don’t lose his enthusiasm for wanting to stay in Long Island.” LeBrun thinks that the San Jose Sharks will go after a top 4 defenseman between now and the trade deadline.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: “Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini insists the rebuild plan will not be altered and he isn’t in the market for a blockbuster trade.” Teams continue to ask about Ales Hemsky. Tambellini is looking to add some grit, a centerman, and a defenseman. They don’t want to deal top prospects for picks.
- ESPN: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson left last night’s game after the 1st period with a groin injury. Adam Foote was also helped off the ice with a leg injury in the 1st period.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Some internet talk that the Bruins could send down Brad Marchand and/or Jordan Caron when Marc Savard is ready to return, but Murphy thinks Daniel Paille could be the roster casualty.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Luca Caputi was returned to the Toronto Marlies. JS Giguere, Colby Armstrong, and Dion Phaneuf skated yesterday before Leafs practice. Ron Wilson said that Armstrong could be back next weekend, still would need to get clearance from doctors. Giguere could be back next week sometimes. Phaneuf is schedule to return mid-December.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Guillaume Latendress had 2 surgeries yesterday, one repairing a torn labrum in his hip, the other having a ‘bilateral sports hernia’ repaired. GM Fletcher thinks he’ll be back before the end of the season.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Mike Mottau will likely be out the Islanders lineup for 4 to 6 weeks.

- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced today that goaltender Michael Leighton will be out a month with a bulging disc. His initial MRI came back negative but a 2nd and 3rd opinion revealed the injury. The Flyers won’t look outside the organization for a replacement.
- Katie Strang via twitter: The New York Islanders have lost Kyle Okposo indefinitely with a right shoulder injury that will require surgery.
- Katie Strang via twitter: The Islanders have signed defenseman Mike Mottau to a 2 year deal.
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: On Wednesday, Alex Burrows will have a ‘cybex test’ on his shoulder. Burrow’s will be on the IR for the first 10 games of the season.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: It’s not a surprise that the New Jersey Devils are trying to trade Bryce Salvador, Colin White and Bryan Rolston. No market for them according to one team.

- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: To start training camp, the Sharks have split up Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. Thornton is centering Ryan Clowe and Devin Setoguchi, while Joe Pavelski is centering Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau.
- Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov is still recovering from late season knee surgery, but it’s progressing. “In my dreams, I want to come back tomorrow, but I can’t. Maybe another month, I don’t know, maybe more, maybe less,” he said.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The 25 year old Brent Seabrook might be the next player GM Stan Bowman tries to lock up long term. Seabrook will be a RFA at seasons end, and is making $3.5 million this year.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers prospect Patrice Cormier broke his foot after blocking a shot. Cormier was acquired in the Kovalchuk trade, but may be more known for being suspended from the QMJHL for a nasty hit.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If the Columbus Blue Jackets defensive corps has some struggles during training camp/pre-season, don’t be surprised if Sheldon Souray talks heat up. The Oilers want a defenseman or 2 in return, and have cap space to take on more contract.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Ken Hitchcock will be attending the Red Wings training camp. “Hitch said, ‘I want to learn, can I come to camp?’ ” Babcock said. “He wants to learn, but I want to learn, too.” “If he can get something from us and we can get something from him, that’s a bonus.”
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The bringing in the versatile Adam Mair on a tryout means the Devils won’t be bringing back Dean McAmmond. Lou said the door isn’t closed in bringing back defenseman Mike Mottau. Mottau’s fate with the Devils depends on if they move out defenseman as they attempt to get under the cap.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson and defenseman Tomas Kaberle have had they private meeting to smooth things out regarding their alleged feud. “I know (a feud) is a nice story for you guys to hang your hats on,” he said added with a smile, “but there really isn’t an issue. I just wanted to get that out there and be on the offensive and give you the information so you aren’t running around thinking (he’s benched) and there is something else going on.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have received calls to see if they would be interested in bringing in any of Robert Lang, Bill Guerin and Petr Sykora on a tryout, but they declined. They don’t have much room under the cap so they don’t want to bring anyone else in.

Eric Belanger: Could be top center on the market, has been told by some teams to wait, Washington and Tampa could be interested. John Madden: “evaluating the possible situations”, once Kovalchuk and Kaberle situations finished, the free agent market will open up (My guess is that he’s referring to NJ or LA as possible destinations, with NJ as the preferred destination). Darcy Tucker: Nothing would happen before the end of the month, location and chance to win are key factors. Raffi Torres: A handful of interested teams, no firm offers. Arron Asham: Getting lots of interest, and has offers, but would like a raise. Ruslan Fedotenko/Miroslav Satan: Both have interest, but teams waiting for other things to happen first. Pavol Demitra: Getting interest from KHL and NHL, and hopes to get something done soon. Mike Mottau: New Jersey is still interested. Flyers interested in Bobby Ryan … Leafs looking for a defenseman

- Jimmy Murphy via Twitter: “Nonsense” Kings source on the Kings trading for Marc Savard so they can sign Kovalchuk.
- Tim Panaccio via Twitter: Rumors that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to clear salary cap room not for a goalie, but for Bobby Ryan.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to add a free agent defenseman. It’s not known at the moment who they’re interested in. If Burke wants size there’s Andy Sutton and Willie Mitchell. If it’s skill and powerplay help maybe Marc-Andre Bergeron. Shot blocking could be Jay McKee. Savy could be Shaone Morrisonn, Freddy Meyer, Mike Mottau, Mike Weaver. If a team interested in acquiring Kaberle offered him an extension, they may be more likely to meet the Leafs asking price. Now that most of big name free agents have signed, things may pick up on Kaberle.
- Mark Spector from Sportsnet.ca: Kevin Bieksa has fallen out of Canucks coach Alain Vigneault good books, and that is why he is on the trading block and not Christian Ehrhoff and Sami Salo, who both are also making $3 million plus and in the last year of their contract. Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow’s neck injury has not responded well, and is not as far along in the rehab as they had hoped. Could one of the reasons they brought Ollie Jokinen back (I still laugh everytime I read/write that Sutter signed Jokinen).

- Ottawa Citizen: Despite reports (and wishes from some Senators fans}, Alex Kovalev won’t be retiring and will be returning to the Sens lineup next season at $5 million. Kovalev had a disappointing first season with the Senators, scoring 18 goals and adding 31 assists in 77 games before injuring his ACL.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero will begin talks with Sergei Gonchar and Matt Cooke next week. Shero has talked about the “parameter [for contracts], but there’s nothing concrete at this point”. A potential $2 million increase in the salary cap could help bring the players back. Brooks Orpik is a couple weeks away from having surgery to repair an abdominal injury that will require 2-3 weeks recovery.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: There’s nothing really new to report on the Evgeni Nabokov-San Jose Sharks talks. “We don’t really have any information from Doug (Wilson) at this time,” Meehan said just before the holiday weekend. “Doug is the kind of individual, I know he’ll get back to us when they have a better idea what they have in mind.” GM Doug Wilson said last week that he still needed to talk with his coaching staff and other management personel before any he got into talks with the teams free agents.
- Julie Heroux of CKAC Sports: Marc-Andre Bergeron is a UFA with the Montreal Canadiens, and he expects to get a contract offer from them. Bergeron has already told GM Pierre Gauthier that he’d like to stay in Montreal longterm.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils are close to re-signing 32-year old defenseman Mike Mottau. Until a new coach is found, Paul Martin and GM Lou Lamoriello have agreed that they won’t talk about potentially re-signing him. Though they’ve had some talks, Ilya Kovalchuk will test out the free agent market to see how big of a contract offer he could get from all teams.
