Sharks hopeful for Clowe … Hejduk re-signs … Weber “It’s going to get done” … Goalie carousel to stop in Philly?

  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Ryane Clowe did not practice yesterday due to his ‘upper-body injury’ but coach Todd McLellan is hopeful that he can play tonight. He’ll skate this morning, and if he can play, he’ll be in the lineup.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Milan Hejduk re-signed with the Avalanche for 1 year and $2.6 million. He can reach $3 million with performance bonuses.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators fans will sleep better now,

“It’s going to get done,” Weber said Wednesday as players packed up to depart for the offseason. “Obviously, this is a place I love to play, and you saw how close we were this year to getting to the conference finals, and possibly further. This is a place I want to be, and it’s going to be a matter of time before something gets done.”

“They definitely want to wrap it up before July 1, and we would also, if all things were equal,” Poile said during a season-ending press conference. “Will we be able to sign Shea Weber? The answer is yes.”

The pending RFA is coming off a 3 year, $13.5 million deal. Weber would like the Preds to add some offense, but the free agent market isn’t strong. Bringing Alex Radulov could be option, GM David Poile still talks with Radulov’s agent, but it’s up to the him to he wants to come back.

Said Poile: “What Paul said to him today was very simply, ‘You made lots of money. Is money an issue? You’re the leading scorer in the league, your team won a championship. You think you’re one of the best players in the world. Are you going to come over to the best league and show that? Or are you going to stay in a secondary league.’ ”

  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers GM Paul holmgren says that Chris Pronger will have back surgery today on his herniated disc. His surgery has a 95% success rate, and is similar to what Michael Leighton underwent last October. Mike Richards had his wrist surgery and has 4 weeks of rehab. Blair Betts’ rehab for his left pinky finger is 4 weeks as well. Leighton had successful surgery repairing a torn labrum. Andrej Meszaros had surgery to repair torn cartilage and a torn ligament in his wrist.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers chairman Ed Snider made it clear yesterday that the Flyers goaltending carousel will stop.

“So either one of the goalies we have has to step up in training camp, or we have to make improvements to make sure it happens. But we are never going to go through the goalie issues we’ve gone through in the last couple of years.”

The Flyers are close to the cap so adding a free agent goalie could be difficult but Snider added,

“If we trade or go for a goalie [through free agency], we’ll make it work,” he said. “We can make anything work, even with the cap.” Snider did say that Sergei Bobrovsky is the “goalie of the future.”

  • Jeff Klein of hte NY Times: August 1st marks the day that Nassau County residents will vote to approve or reject a $400 million bond issue to build a new arena. $350 million would go towards the arena and $50 million towards a minor league baseball stadium.
  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Free agent Jason Arnott has said he’d like to remain in Capitals, but will they want to re-sign him? 3 of the last 4 seasons the Capitals have brought in veteran leadership at the trade deadline, but it’s possible the team thinks their younger players should step up.

Predators off-season notes … 5 Flyers require surgery … Fehr and Leblanc had shoulder surgery … Fasth getting interest

  • Josh Cooper of the Nashville Tennessean: The Predators made it to the 2nd round for the 1st time in franchise history, and will have a busy off-season with 4 UFAs and 5 RFAs. Their biggest challenge will be RFA Shea Weber who’d requires a raise from his current $4.5 million salary. Both sides had agreed during the season to wait until the off-season. One comparable could be Dion Phaneuf’s 6 year, $39 million deal. A starting point could be Brent Seabrook’s 5 year, $29 million contract, but he doesn’t put up the same offensive numbers and doesn’t provide the same leadership. Would they look at trade Weber before July 1st if they feel they can’t get a deal done? Joel Ward is a UFA and proved during the playoffs that he is more valuable than his $1.5 million he made this year. The Predators need to find a ‘game-changing  forward,’ Shea Weber pointed this out on Monday. “That’s obviously up to the front office now, but we have to find a way to generate more goals,” Weber said. “We’re a good defensive team, but that can only get you so far.” Steve Sullivan will likely have to take a pay cut from his $3.75 million if he wants to come back next year. JP Dumont, who has a healthy scratch at times during the 2nd half of the season, is due to make $4 million next year and they could consider buying him out.
  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals forward Eric Fehr had surgery to repair a torn labrum on his right shoulder. He could be out 4 to 6 months. 2 years ago he had surgery on both his shoulders.

“When he comes out of the sling, he’ll go through a very specific rehab program intending to get back his motion and strength and the rhythm of the shoulder back,” Shaffer said. “We’ll allow him to start skating two months from the date of the procedure, but return to play will be gradual. He’ll probably be on the ice in training camp but he won’t be in contact, collision situations.”

  • Montreal Gazette: Canadiens prospect Louis Leblanc had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder on Tuesday and will have 4 to 6 months of rehab. Leblanc was picked 18th overall in the 2009 draft. If the rehab lasts only 4 months, he could be ready for training camp.
  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Friedman thinks that if the Capitals are to shakeup their core, they should only move one of Mike Green or Alexander Semin, but not both.
  • Philadelphia Flyers via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that 5 players will need off-season surgery. Mike Richards and Andrej Meszaros will have wrist surgery. Kris Versteeg will have a stomach muscle procedure, Blair Betts on his finger and Michael Leighton will have hip surgery.

New Bruins lines … No truth to Richards, Carter rumors just yet … Wild coaching candidates … Flyers notes

  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: With Patrice Bergeron likely out to start the conference finals, Tyler Seguin is likely in. Seguin practiced on right wing yesterday with Rich Peverley and Michael Ryder. Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Chris Kelly will be centering Brad Marchand and Mark Recchi. Bergeron’s agent said that his symptoms are not as severe as his first 2 concussions. Bergeron is to see a neurologist on Thursday.
  • Sam Carchidi via twitter: In time, Carchidi thinks that Sergei Bobrovsky could be the franchise goalie the Flyers have been looking for.
  • Wayne Fish of the PhillyBurbs: Flyers Ville Leino, Brian Boucher and Sean O’Donnell have all expressed interest in returning to the Flyers next season. Keeping Leino could be difficult as he’s rumored to be looking for $3.5 million. He was asked about a hometown discount, “I don’t know,” he said, laughing. “If I’m going to stay here, I guess I’m going to have to do some discounting.” Leino hinted that he may have received a ballpark offer that could be used for a starting point. As for UFA Boucher, the Flyers have Bobrovsky and Leighton under contract for next season.
  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Russo provides a list of possible candidates for the Wild head coaching job. Craig MacTavish has been interviewed. Former NHL coaches include: Michel Therrien, Ken Hitchcock, Peter DeBoer, Scott Gordon, and Guy Carbonneau. Current NHL assistants: Kirk Muller, Mike Haviland, Paul MacLean, John Torchetti, and John Stevens. Current AHL head coaches: Mike Yeo, and Kevin Dineen.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Tim Connolly and Mike Grier are a combined $5.9 million that will be off the books for the Sabres. If they are going to spend some money this off-season, they’ll look to improve along the blueline. Marco Sturm made $3.5 million this past season, and those days will be gone. Maybe a team like Columbus or Ottawa offers him a $800,000 deal.

Franzen re-injures ankle … Flyers off-season notes … Reasons why Lidstrom may not retire

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Johan Franzen missed the 3rd period last night after re-aggravating his sprained ankle. Coach Mike Babcock said it will be up to Franzen if he goes Tuesday or not.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Some Flyers off-season notes. With some leadership questions in the playoffs, would the Flyers talk with Mike Richards about his team captaincy? If the Flyers would consider moving Jeff Carter, there would be at least 20 teams interested. Would be hard to move Scott Hartnell and his $4.2 million cap hit. Nik Zherdev is a UFA, was a healthy scratch 24 times. Andreas Nodl is a RFA, suffered a concussion in the playoffs, but will be back. They don’t have room ‘tagging’ room for Ville Leino at the moment, he’ll be looking for somewhere between $2-3 million. Kimmo Timonen is believed to be playing with a lower back injury during the playoffs. Brian Boucher is a UFA, he’d like to comeback, but may not be in the Flyers plans.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen lists 5 reasons he thinks Niklas Lidstrom won’t retire. 1. He and his wife are not in rush to leave Michigan. 2. The relationship between Lidstrom and the Red Wings is close to perfect. They ask him what salary number he can live with, and they don’t play hardball with him. 3. It could be hard to walk away from the money. He made $6.2 million this past season, and likely wouldn’t go below the $6 million Rafalski makes. 4. He still loves the game. 5. At 40 he is a Norris Trophy finalist.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Islanders will look to trade Evgeni Nabokov at or before the NHL Entry Draft. The Flyers seem like a logical possibility. Getting true value for Mike Green and Alexander Semin would be difficult if the Capitals decided to go down that route. Capitals forward Brooks Laich will be highly sought after on July 1st. He’ll be looking for 1st line money even though he’s a 2nd-3rd line player.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Wild have to sign WHL player of year, Darcy Kuemper by June 1st or he will become a free agent. Kuemper was a 6th round pick in 2009 but wants 1st round money. The Oilers and several other teams are watching free agent Swedish goalie Viktor Fasth. Doctor’s can’t figure out what is causing Jonas Hiller’s vertigo.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The Rangers traded 2009 draft pick Ethan Werek to the Coyotes for 2010 draft pick Oscar Lindberg. Werek wasn’t under contract and the Rangers would have lost his rights if he wasn’t signed by the end of the month.

Richards not suspended for hit on Connolly … Norris finalists announced … Roy in for Game 7 … Boucher to start Game 7… Kaberle responds to Chiarelli’s comments

  • Norris finalists are Zdeno Chara, Nicklas Lidstrom and Shea Weber.
  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Flyers center Mike Richards won’t be suspended for his hit from behind on Sabres Tim Connolly.
  • Sam Carchidi via twitter: Tim Connolly will be out for Game 7, Derek Roy is in. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: “Tim’s not doing very good,” said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. “That’s something the league definitely has to take a look at. It’s a lack of respect for another player on the ice. It’s from behind. It’s head first. That’s a tough play. We lost a good player.”
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman skated in full pad today for the first time since suffering his leg hematoma.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: According to coach Bruce Boudreau there is no timetable on when Mike Knuble or Dennis Wideman will be back in the lineup. Mike Green isn’t on the ice today but is ‘okay.’
  • Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston: Bruins defenseman Tomas Kaberle responded to GM Peter Chiarelli’s “disappointment” comments,

“I always put a lot of pressure on myself,” Kaberle said, “and hopefully I can prove why I am here. I would like to help out in every little thing I can do on the ice. Obviously I’m one of the guys on the [power play] and it would be nice to get something going there.

“The first couple of games I could have been better. The last few games I felt a lot better and I’m feeling better confidence-wise, so I’ll take it from there.”

At the time of the trade, Chiarelli and Kaberle’s agent, Rick Curran, agreed to put off contract talks until the off-season. There has been no communication between the two sides since then. Curran didn’t think Chiarelli’s comments were a concern for future talks. Kaberle has been paired with stay-at-home defenseman Adam McQuaid lately.

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Parise says he’s interested in staying in NJ, enjoys his teammates and has fun play there. He hasn’t talked to his agents about contract details.
  • Mike Richards hit on Tim Connolly

Carter injured … Pronger and Seabrook could be back for Game 5 … Video of Richards elbow on Kaleta

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers 1-0 loss to the Sabres last night could turn out to be pretty costly. Mike Richards had a 5-minute major for elbowing Patrick Kaleta, and it could be under review by the league. Jeff Carter left with 2 minutes left in the 1st period with what looked like an knee injury after colliding with Tyler Myers. GM Paul Holmgren said Carter is day-to-day. The loss may also signal the return of Chris Pronger who’s been out for the last 5 weeks.
  • Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook traveled with the team and could be in the lineup for Game 5. John Scott could be out of the lineup if Seabrook is back in. Tomas Kopecky has been out with an upper-body injury, is still out.
  • Bill Beacon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens forward Jeff Halpern practiced yesterday and it looks like he could be ready to go tonight. He’s been out with an undisclosed injury.
  • Damian Cox of the Toronto Star: The Blackhawks won’t have to dismantle again this off-season. They have $51 million committed for next year, and the salary cap is expected to rise to around $62 million next season. Cory Crawford is basically on the only major contract they have to deal with. They could look to add a veteran center, some size and maybe a new backup goalie.
  • Richards elbow on Kaleta. I don’t see him getting suspended.

More on Brad Richards … Leino’s contract may have to wait … Savard passes Neuro test

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Everyone knows by now that Richards is a UFA at seasons end, the team is without owners, the Stars would to sign him, he wouldn’t mind staying, and he might be traded at the trade deadline. Joe Nieuwendyk had that is say, “I’ve talked to NHL Commissioner] Gary Bettman about the issues, and I did ask that if the lenders are carrying us to summer time, then we have some important things we need to talk about with them,” he said. “I think the lenders are also aware how important this could be for our team.” In my opinion, if they could get Richards to sign a cap friendly deal in the $6.5 million range, it could be a plus for a potential owner. It’s not a crazy number to have your number one player at, and I’d rather a Stars roster with him on it than without. Their cap number can easily stay below $50 million with Richards signed.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Glen Sather won’t be putting a together a package of his young players (Dubinsky, Staal, Del Zotto or Callahan) for Brad Richards. If/when Richards becomes a UFA on July 1st, the Rangers will definitely look at him. Sather will monitor the Richards situation during the year, and especially at the trade deadline, if they feel they are one piece away they might take a closer look.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers may not be able to sign Ville Leino to a contract extension due to the league rule that they cannot exceed this years salary cap number ($59.4 million) when it comes to next years salaries. So far they have $57.6 million tied into 18 players. If they sign him to under $1.8 million, they would be able to add him. Leino’s agent met with the Flyers last week, and both sides realize there is plenty of time to get a deal done. Dan Carcillo (sprained MCL) is scheduled to skate today and is at least a week away.
  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Gordon thinks the Blues should keep an eye on the Bruins situation when they need to start unloading some contracts. With TJ Oshie out for an extended period of time, and David Perron still suffering post concussion symptoms, they might be need some help upfront.
  • Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames will know the morning is Matt Stajan is able to go against the Devils (click here to see Stajan laid out by Staal if you missed it). Robyn Regehr is day-to-day with a lower body injury.
  • Corey Masisak via twitter: Mike Green on his recent injury, “It is more of something that has been bothering me in the past and it is not getting better.”
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks traded forward Ryan Carter to the Carolina Hurricanes for prospects Matt Kennedy and Stefan Chaput. In 18 games Carter registered 3 points and 22 PIMs, and cleared waivers before they traded him. Carolina plans to use him as their 4th line center. Kennedy and Chaput will report to Syracuse. Anaheim also traded Stu Bickel to the NY Rangers for Nigel Williams.
  • Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks have put Peter Schaefer on waivers yesterday. Teams have until 9 am this morning to claim him, he’ll likely be assigned to Manitoba if clears. Jeff Tambellini will likely be recalled. The question will be if the veteran Schaefer reports or not.
  • Audio Ottawa Citizen: Writers James Gordon, Wayne Scanlan and Ken Warren discuss the Ottawa Senators.
  • Fan 960 Audio: Darren Dreger and Rob Kerr talk Marc Staal’s hit on Matt Stajan among other issues in the NHL.
  • Fan 590 Audio: from Monday. Colin Campbell on with Bob McCown and John Shannon discussing “topics such as Dean Warren, the recent e-mail scandal, being involved in his son’s games, NHL officiating as well as the league’s disciplining process and policies.”

Rypien suspended indefinitely, hearing Friday … Green still out … Richards off top PP unit … Burke and Lamoriello audio

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Canucks Rick Rypien has been suspended by the NHL, pending a hearing. Pierre LeBrun, hearing is ‘in-person’, which is required under the CBA to suspend a player for 5 games or more, but doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll get 5 games or more.Dreger says it’s likely that Rypien’s hearing will be on Friday. ESPN posts an article on other instances where NHL players and fans have been involved.
  • Tim Panaccio via twitter: Mike Richards has been replaced on the top power play unit during practice. Top unit Jeff Carter, Scott Hartnell, Daniel Briere , Kimmo Timonen & Chris Pronger.
  • John Buccigross of ESPN: If the Dallas Stars decide to trade Brad Richards, Buccigross thinks they could get a 1st round pick, a prospect and a roster player for him. He also thinks the Leafs, Kings and Rangers would be interested, and could offer him right away a 5 to 7 year deal worth $30-40 million. The Blues might be a good fit for Richards.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers forward Nik Antropov is still not a 100% from off-season hip surgery. He’s struggled out of the gate with 1 assist in 5 games so far. Coach Craig Ramsey has tried to limit his minutes (averaging 13:31 per game) and could sit him out for a time, they are going game-by-game with him.
  • Dan Tencer via twitter: Lines at the Edmonton Oilers practice today: Penner/Gagner/Hemsky, Paajarvi/Horcoff/Eberle & Hall/Cogliano/Brule.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: It’s looking more and more like Bill Guerin will be retiring from the NHL. No announcement has been made, but one could be coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
  • Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke was on the Andrew Krystal show this morning talking about the Maple Leafs and answering some fan questions.
  • Fan 590 Audio: Lou Lamoriello on Prime Time Sports yesterday with Bob McCown talking about roster concerns and the current salary cap system.
  • Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Jordan Staal practiced for the 2nd straight day. He feels he’s ready and could travel with the team on the upcoming road trip. Brooks Oprik could return against St. Louis.

Krejci Out … Flames not firing anyone? Spezza on the block? Jokinen not going Minsk

  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: After being smoked by Mike Richards on a big open ice hit, David Krejci didn’t return to the game. He was taken to local hospital for further evaluation.
  • George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: It’s looking more and more likely that the Calgary Flames are holding pat with regards to GM Darryl Sutter, their coaches, and management. This is based on the fact that there has been no news out of Calgary regarding it, and that the Draft and Free Agency are getting closer. There had been rumors that Sutter could be fired.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan thinks the Senators should quietly see what they could get for Jason Spezza before his July 1st no-movement clause kicks in. It would be hard to replace another top, point-a-game player, but it could bring back a nice package. Fans blamed Spezza for their 1st round loss, something that obviously didn’t sit well with Spezza.
  • Darren Dreger via Twitter: There is a rumor out there that Olli Jokinen is signing a deal with Minsk, Jokinen’s agent refutes it and says he’s hoping to play in the NHL next season.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks if Bill Guerin will be back next season. Molinari thinks Guerin will want to play next year, the lack of depth on the wings, and that he’s fit well with the team, most likely will mean he’ll be back. But a lot will depend on how much he wants and if the Pens really want to have the 39-year old back.
  • Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Scott Arniel met with the Blue Jackets last Saturday, and on Tuesday Kevin Dineen was the second candidate to interviewed by Columbus for their head coaching position. Other candidates that are expected to get interviews are Claude Noel (CBJ interim coach), Paul MacLean (Det. assist.) and Guy Boucher (AHL Hamilton).
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres are faced with the decision if they want to resign Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder or not. Both will be unrestricted free agents, but will have to be at the right price if they’ll both want to be back. The 32-year old Lydman had a cap number of $2.875 million, the  31-year old Tallinder had an average of $2.56, and both could be looking for something similar, maybe more.
  • The Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson had successful hernia surgery on Tuesday, with recovery time expected to 4 to 6 weeks. Other Ottawa Senators having off-season surgery are Alex Kovalev and Milan Michalek (both ACL) and Chris Phillips (bunions).
