Report that Plekanec will waive NTC, his agent denies … Nabokov getting interest … Lightning will have to wait for Schneider

- Dave Stubbs of Hockey Inside/Out: Tomas Plekanec’s agent let it be known earlier this month that Plekanec would be willing to waive his no trade clause. Frustrations from a losing season and a parade of different wingers may have lead to this decision. Plekanec has dealt with 18 different line combinations. The Canadiens are looking for a winger with size in exchange for Plekanec.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Tomas Plekanec’s agent, Rich Curran, said that they’ve never had a conversation about waiving his no trade clause. Denies the report.
- Louis Jean via twitter: Jean has been looking into the Plekanec rumor for 3 days. None of the teams he’s talked have heard his name. Has also been told that he never expressed desire to leave.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kypreos was told that Plekanec hasn’t been approached to waive his no trade clause and hasn’t given a minute of thought to leave the Canadiens.
- Katie Strang via twitter: The Islanders are not looking to move Evgeni Nabokov despite the interest they are getting for him.
- Damian Cristodero via twitter: If the Lightning really want Cory Schneider, it won’t happen until the summer.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Russo thinks the Wild should trade Josh Harding. As far as Harding knows, there have been no contract discussions. Mikko Koivu skated and was shooting pucks, but there is no timetable for his return.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Maple Leafs, Penguins and Senators are checking out the goalie market.The Pens and Sens are looking for depth, and have shown interest in Josh Harding. The Wild are looking for a top pick and prospect. The Leafs have talked to the Islanders about Evgeni Nabokov, but GM Garth Snow is saying he won’t be moved. There is plenty of interest in Sabres Derek Roy. The Leafs, Canadiens, Blackhawks and Kings were interested in Antoine Vermette before he was dealt to Phoenix. The Canadiens could be open to trading center Tomas Plekanec. The Islanders want to wait until after today’s game to decide whether they are buyers or sellers. P.A. Parenteau is interested in re-signing with the Islanders, but the Senators, Blackhawks, Bruins and Maple Leafs have shown interest in him. If the Hurricanes are able to re-sign Bryan Allen, they may move Jaroslav Spacek. It’s sounding like Steve Ott won’t be moved, Canucks and Leafs interested. Looking like Mike Ribeiro could be moved.
- The Fourth Period: One league executive is saying the Maple Leafs are looking to add 2 top 6 forwards, which may result in the Leafs dealing Mikhail Grabovski. It’s looking unlikely that he’ll be re-signing with the Leafs before the deadline. The Leafs have been offered a 2nd and a prospect. The Leafs are also eyeing Steve Ott, James van Riemsdyk and Paul Stastny.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews upper body injury is progressing. There is a chance he plays on Wednesday. Same goes for Niklas Hjalmarsson.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: The Islanders have a couple inquiries on Brian Rolston, so it won’t be a surprise if he gets claimed off waivers.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Don’t expect to see Red Wings Patrick Eaves back this season. He’s been out with a broken jaw and is still having headaches.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock likes his roster, but realizes you can’t have enough depth up front.
“We’re all focused on if we can improve our team,” Babcock said. “At the same time, we like our team. If there’s something there that can help us and makes sense, then that’s a great thing.
“Change just to change isn’t going to be the approach. We’ve already done a good job in giving ourselves depth on the back end (by acquiring defenseman Kyle Quincey on Tuesday). We want to get healthy up front, but if there’s something available to make us better, we’d like to acquire that.”
A list of players could include: Travis Moen, Paul Gaustad, Sammy Pahlsson, Steve Ott, Mike Knuble and Mikael Samuelsson.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators GM David Poile:
“This trading deadline is not setting up anywhere near the same, in my memory, as past trading deadline,” Poile said. “Now we have more situations where more teams are in the playoffs or ‘I’m two points out of the playoffs … I’m not sure If I’m a buyer or a seller.’ What we know for sure is how close the standings are and it’s really hard to identify very many sellers at this point.”
The Predators continue to look for a forward.
“We certainly could use more depth on our forwards,” Poile said. “You talk two things, a higher-end deal for a top-six or top-nine forward or you talk about your depth.”

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the trade deadline just days away, Brian Burke is being squeezed. The teams is struggling (losing 7 of 8), and he’s hoping to make a deal at a reasonable price. Does he overpay for a Rick Nash or not given to the high prices for others? Columbus is squeezing Burke on Nash, same with demands for backup goalies, and what it would take for Dustin Brown. Burke has worked hard to accumulate prospects like Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Joe Colborne, Keith Aulie, Nazem Kadri and Jesse Blacker, and it’s difficult to package them off for a big-name expensive player. Does Burke trade away future players for short-term solutions, or avoid it all costs? Some want Nash or Brown now. The smartest decision may be to trade Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur, keep the young guys and regroup, and fire Wilson.
- Randy Starkman of the Toronto Star: Former NHLer Mike Peca thinks the Maple Leafs should go after Mike Ribeiro or Ryan Getzlaf.
“There’s so many spots where they can benefit from getting somebody. They’re waiting to see if Reimer will shake out to be a good goalie. I think the one thing they do need is a centre. Somebody who might be available is a guy like Mike Ribeiro from Dallas, who’s just a good guy with the puck and can move it around and seems to have a personality and a swagger that can hold up to the pressures of Toronto. I don’t know if (Ryan) Getzlaf will still be available. He’d be a guy that’d be a perfect fit in Toronto. But I think for them to get a guy who can be a No. 1 centre, play those minutes, distribute the puck is somebody the Leafs would love to get. They talk about Rick Nash, but then that’s adding another scoring winger without addressing what the need is: A bona fide No. 1 centre that’s going to anchor that top line for years to come.”
Darren Pang thinks Josh Harding and Chris Mason may be good options for the Maple Leafs
“You need a goaltender there that you’re not going to give up too much for … the guys that are unrestricted. Josh Harding would be a good fit there … He’s unrestricted at the end of the year, likely not to re-sign there, can win hockey games, can play the puck and I think he would be a good fit for Toronto. A guy like Chris Mason in Winnipeg, a veteran guy who’s been down the stretch and helped get the Blues in the playoffs a couple of years ago, he’s a great teammate. He would be a stabilizing force for those young goaltenders.”

Dam Rosen via twitter: The Minnesota Wild will receive Kurtis Foster, Nick Palmieri, Stephane Veilleux, a 2012 2nd round pick and a 2013 conditional pick from the New Jersey Devils for Marek Zidlicky. Michael Russo via twitter: conditional pick is 3rd round pick if the Devils reach the conference finals.
Rich Chere via twitter: The 2nd round pick will be Washington’s 2nd round pick. (NJ acquired the pick in the Jason Arnott trade).
Zidlicky has one more year left on his contract at $4 million.

Josh Rimer via twitter: Hearing Devils get Zidlicky for Kurtis Foster and 4th round pick. Nick Kypreos via twitter: Confirming that Foster has been told he’s been traded to Minnesota.

A deal has not been announced yet, but it appears to be imminent.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Kings forward Dustin Brown may now be available, which puts more heat on the Blue Jackets to make a decision on Nash. The Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Flyers are just a few teams that would be interested. Jim Matheson via twitter: If Brown is available, Matheson thinks Eastern Conference teams will be all over him even with the 2 remaining years. The Bruins and Capitals could be interested. Tim Panaccio via twitter: A source said that the Flyers can’t get serious on Brown because of salary cap issues. Andy Strickland via twitter: “In a salary cap world where every GM wants value for the $ why would LA trade Dustin Brown? Has maybe the best contract in the NHL.”
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Teams are circling with interest in Ales Hemsky, but don’t rule out the Oilers making one last push to re-sign him. 2 years and $10 million ($5 million per season) might keep him there. - Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying the San Jose Sharks are looking into deals for Blue Jackets Rick Nash and Jeff Carter. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is still looking to get a 1st round pick, a good roster player, and the top prospect in that organization for Nash. For the Sharks the roster player may be Logan Couture or Joe Pavelski. Carter may cost a 1st round pick and to take on more salary with another player. A source said Nash could cost the Kings Jonathan Bernier or Jack Johnson, Tyler Toffoli and a 1st round pick. The Sabres could start dealing soon, but don’t expect to see Ryan Miller trade. Paul Gaustad and Derek Roy are getting interest. Teams are waiting to see if the Avalanche will become sellers, and if Milan Hejduk will becomes available. If the Capitals become sellers, Mike Knuble might become available, and could get interest from the Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings, and Blackhawks. Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik was a healthy scratch and may have interest from the Canucks and Blues. The Oilers and Ales Hemsky have held discussions on a multi-year deal. The Kings, Rangers, Bruins and Sharks may be interested in Hemsky.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke on TSN Radio yesterday:
“I’m not sure that we’re not going to be in the market [for a goalie] before we’re done,” Burke said. “It’s something that we have to at least explore what the price tags are. The fact is we’re losing games because we’re not stopping the puck enough. … We’ve got to get our goaltenders to stop the puck.”
Burke made it clear that he’s looking for immediate help and not prospects. Mirtle lists potential goalies that may be available: Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier, Josh Harding, Evgeni Nabokov, Ben Bishop, Curtis Sanford, and Antero Niittymaki.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The Devils could use some help on the blueline due to Henrik Tallinder’s and Adam Larsson’s injuries. Travis Zajac’s injury may lead them to look at adding a center. The Devils may not have room in their ‘secret payroll budget’ to fit in Marek Zidlicky’s contract. Canadiens Chris Campoli could be an option. Since the Jets are back in the playoff hunt, Johnny Oduya is likely off the market. Bryan Allen, Jaroslav Spacek and Lubomir Vishnovsky would be expensive to get.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks Jonathan Toews’ has an upper-body injury and won’t play tonight. Coach Joel Quenneville said he’s day-to-day and they hope he can skate on Friday. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson skated for the 4th straight day and could return tonight.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is still looking for a top 4 puck moving defenseman, and a veteran forward, preferably a center. He’s said he’d move picks and prospects, and has a tendency to look for players who are not just rentals. Stars Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro may be available, but their cost could be high. Blackhawks Jimmy Hayes is said to interest teams. The Hawks were said to have interest in Kyle Quincey and Nicklas Grossman before they were dealt. The Leafs could be looking to move Cody Franson or Luke Schenn.
- Kevin McGran via twitter: Burke on TSN Radio “I’m not interested in just making the playoffs and getting my ass kicked. I want to have a parade.”
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Richard Bachman will start in net tonight for the Stars. Defenseman Sheldon Souray will return, Jamie Benn is doubtful.

- Craig Custance of ESPN: The Red Wings will still look to add depth up front. “I’ll kick the tires until 3 o’clock on Monday,” Holland said. “If we don’t do anything, I’m happy. I think we’re a better team.” The Oilers may be looking to get a 1st round pick for Ales Hemsky. The Maple Leafs may look to add a goaltender at the deadline, and Custance thinks that Wild goalie Josh Harding would be a good choice.
- Dirk Hoag via twitter: Even if the Maple Leafs are interested in goalie Andres Lindback, Hoag doubts the Leafs would offer up a useful forward that the Predators could use since they are pushing for the playoffs as well.
- David Alter via twitter: Alter is hearing from a reliable source that Jeff Carter to the Maple Leafs rumor is completely false.
- Eric Stephens OC Register: The Ducks have got back in the playoff picture in the West, and Teemu Selanne isn’t thinking about waiving his no-trade clause. “We haven’t even talked about that,” Selanne said. “There’s good things going here right now. We all really believe we can make it to the playoffs. It hasn’t been on my mind at all.”

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said that ownership has been very supportive so far, and that trade talks have become more focused. He also noted that he’s received lots of “creativity” in trade interest with several of their players.
- Kevin Allen via twitter: There may be more interest in Stars Steve Ott if he wasn’t making $3.2 million next year.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Wild have recalled goalie Matt Hackett due to a Josh Harding minor injury. It’s not trade related.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said he did not set a deadline day for re-signing Tuomo Ruutu. Some assumed that he did since he mentioned he expected a decision by mid-week. Rutherford added: “We’ve worked very hard on it and gone as far as we can go. We’re hoping he’s staying and will get a positive answer from him.” He also said he didn’t expect to be active leading up to the deadline. “I say that now, but you can get surprised.” The Hurricanes also hope to get Joni Pitkanen back in the lineup in the next 10 days.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: One of the Sharks star players wouldn’t be opposed to them adding Sean Avery, saying the veterans could handle him. Sharks management may not be on the same page as their star player though.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings and Todd Bertuzzi are closing in on a 2 year contract extension worth close to $2.2 million per season.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Alexander Radulov is saying the Predators are “pressing” him to return to the NHL.
- Nick Cotsonika via twitter: From Cotsonika’s interview with Sharks GM Wilson, he said that the early deals are the best but “sellers can sometimes dictate that if they’re going to put a guy on the market or not.” In other words, Wilson may prefer to make a big deal in the summer.

- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Capitals prospect Evgeni Kuznetsov said that he’d stay in Russia if offered a 10 year contract. Kuznetsov wants “to be sure you’d stay in one place, develop in the same city, plan ahead.”

The Senators are interested in Tuomo Ruutu, along with the Bruins, Rangers, Flyers, Blackhawks and Predators. Though there are some reports that he’s off the market, one executive said Saturday that he wasn’t. To get Ruutu could be costly, a top prospect (perhaps Mark Stone or Stefan Noesen) and a 1st round pick, which is not going to happen. The Senators have been listening to offers for Filip Kuba. It’s doubtful that it happens, but is possible. Sergei Gonchar could also get dealt.

Elliotte Friedman noted that the Blue Jackets are trying to push Nash on the Flyers, and that they’d prefer to move Jeff Carter to the Kings. Francis said that Patrick Kane is happy in Chicago and they are happy with him. Friedman suggested that the Blackhawks could face some questions if they have a short playoff run. Francis said the Flames haven’t had contract talks with Olli Jokinen, but he’s not going anywhere. Sam Gagner also isn’t going anywhere.

- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets don’t expect to make any trades this weekend, but one phone call could change that.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said yesterday there’s no doubt he’s a buyer. “I’m always going to be trying to acquire assets. I’m always looking to make our team better for the future.” “It’s not just other teams asking about (our young players),” he said. “There are a lot of things that are talked about.” Cheveldayoff said there hasn’t been any contract extension talk with any of their pending UFAs: Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Tim Stapleton, Johnny Oduya, Randy Jones, Mark Flood and Chris Mason.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Burnside thinks it’s time for the Sabres to start making some deals. The Canadiens should find a taker for Hal Gill and perhaps Andrei Kostitsyn. Travis Moen and Chris Campoli could also be moved. The Bruins and Rangers will both be looking to add some depth along the blueline. A source said the Flyers could also be looking at adding another Dman. Hurricanes Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek will be UFAs. Luke Schenn could be had if it helps the Leafs land a top 6 forward. The Kings Jack Johnson could be in play, but they’d need to get a top forward back
- Adrian Deter of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche will move a defenseman, with Shane O’Brien making sense. Dater also thinks teams will be interested Ryan Wilson, Ryan O’Byrne and Kyle Quincey.
- David Hutchinson of the Star Ledger: The Devils are looking for a veteran defenseman. Marek Zidlicky is one possibility, and he’s already waived his no trade clause for them.

- Damian Cristodero via twitter: Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina has been asked to provide a list of teams he’d accept a trade too. Kubina has a limited no trade clause. GM Steve Yzerman wouldn’t say if a trade is imminent, but in the interim he won’t play. Yzerman said the trade deadline is a time to replenish their organizational depth. Prospects and draft picks will be a priority. Getting a goalie will likely happen in the summer.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Sources are saying that Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky will be scratched from tonight’s game against the Jets. A trade hasn’t been made, but they want to make sure an injury doesn’t occur.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: The Kings are after a scoring winger, and are believed to be interested in Rick Nash. It doesn’t sound like winger Simon Gagne is close to returning. Rick Nash would be a perfect fit. They may have to part with Jack Johnson, Jonathan Bernier and a couple prospects. If they can’t land Nash, Jeff Carter could be another option, reuniting him with Mike Ricahrds.
“Don’t count L.A. out of that mix,” said an NHL source. “They’re looking for a top-six forward big time.”
Ales Hemsky could be another option, but tensions have been little high between the Oilers and Kings from the Ryan Smyth fiasco this past summer. A NHL scout breaks down LA’s trade deadline strategy:
“They’re pretty solid in goal, their defense is steady. They have guys back there with Johnson and Drew Doughty who can provide offense. I can see them wanting to add a [Jeff] Carter-type guy. I think they could use a fourth-line guy too.
“But I think they should go out and get that top two line player. If they’re going to move Jack Johnson, it’s no secret, he’s not the most defensive-minded guy. He brings that offensive upside and he’s still young. If you’re giving him up because you want to get better, you’d better make sure [of a big return]. He has a bomb for a shot, and in the playoffs special teams can win or lose you a game.”
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: 3 teams are interested in Blue Jackets center Jeff Carter.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Jeremy Roenick recently suggested he’d trade Patrick Kane for a top goaltender. Strickland says the idea of moving Kane as come up, and some realize they need to give up something big to get something big. Offensively they could survive with Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, and Dave Bolland. Sources are saying that Miller is unhappy with Buffalo and would waive his no trade clause for Chicago. There had been speculation that he’d only accept a trade to LA or Anaheim to be closer to his wife (actress Noureen DeWulf), but that is inaccurate. Kane is 23 and is owed $6.5 million through 2015. Miller is 31 and is owed $6.25 million through 2014. Ryan Miller hasn’t been approached by anyone in the organization regarding a trade.

“I have two players who are unavailable,” Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray declared to a pair of Southern California newspapers on Jan. 4, a saliva-inducing statement as the other 29 NHL teams began to pick apart the Ducks’ roster.
More than a month later, where do those two players and the rest of the team stand on the eve of the Feb. 27 trade deadline?
Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu, who possess no-trade clauses, are still in Anaheim – and that remains unlikely to change. The main reason: A 12-3-3 run since Jan. 1 (through Monday) that has kept the team on the fringe of the playoff conversation. Be assured that Murray’s phone is still ringing, but he might wait until the last minute before committing to joining the sellers’ camp
Be assured, too, that Murray is listening. The GM has been quite active in advance of deadlines past.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Marek Zidlicky has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Devils. A deal isn’t done yet.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: No GM is burning up the phone more than Capitals GM George McPhee. After landing in Toronto part way through their back-to-back games on Jan. 31st, the Penguins got a full-body cavity search when they got off the plane. The Maple Leafs don’t want to go above $5 million for Mikhail Grabovski. Grabovski’s side are looking at something along the lines of Phil Kessel’s $5.4 million. A source said that the Canucks might be a landing spot for Jeff Carter. Years ago the Canucks and Flyers talked about a Carter-Kesler deal. Carter’s deal doesn’t fit into the Canucks pay structure now though.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Burke would love to Ryan Getzlaf, but it wouldn’t likely happen to the summer, if at all. The Leafs may not want to meet the asking price for Rick Nash. They’d like James van Riemsdyk, but he’s out with a concussion. A rival NHL executive on Burke:
“He’s a deal-maker. He likes to make deals if there’s a common fit. He’s very fair when you’re trying to make a deal. [Assistant GM Dave] Nonis does some of the groundwork, but Burkie likes to keep his nose in there. He’s famous for his texting and emailing.”
There are still no plans for the Leafs to trade for a goalie. They don’t have much interest in Jeff Carter. Ryan Malone could be an option, but he has a no-movement clause, the Lightning aren’t sellers yet, and he has 4 years left at $4.5 million. Malone could come cheap. For the right deal they could move one of their defenseman: Carl Gunnarsson, Luke Schenn, Keith Aulie or Cody Franson. They haven’t ruled out moving Mikhail Grabovski. One scout on the Leafs deadline strategy:
“Everyone wants to get bigger and skilled, and it’s hard to get. They’re not a dime a dozen. Personally, their goaltending and back end would be a bit of a concern for me. Their coach, Ron Wilson — and I’m not a big fan of him — seems to be getting the most out of his players. I didn’t think [Joffrey] Lupul would keep this pace; him and Kessel obviously have chemistry. That’s great for Toronto. [Grabovski] is trending up, but he’s not the biggest guy. In the playoffs, you have to be able to wear down teams. When you’re small and finishing checks, you’re still not making the D work that hard. I think Columbus would jump all over [a Jeff Carter trade], and I think they would take a little less [than] what Philadelphia got for him. I can see Toronto wanting more up front. I’m not 100 percent sold on their goaltending. I’m not sure they know who their No. 1 guy is. As a team, if you don’t know who you’re going to run with — you just want to have that confidence if you have a bad game your goalie is going to pull one out. I don’t know if Toronto has that.”

- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks the Flyers should go after Luke Schenn if the Predators won’t trade Ryan Suter or Shea Weber. He’d give up a 1st and 2nd round pick for Schenn. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Schenn isn’t going to the Flyers, not because of James van Riemsdyk’s concussion, but because they think he’s overrated. Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers could also go after Hurricanes Bryan Allen or Canadiens Hal Gill.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: The Sabres are 14th in the conference, but only 8 points out. GM Darcy Regier indicated that some moves could be for both short term (playoff run) and long term (future cap room). Brad Boyes, Jochen Hecht and Paul Gaustad are UFAs. Marc-Andre Gragnani (RFA) has had a disappointing season and could be moved. There has been rumors that Derek Roy has been available for most of the season. Robyn Regehr and Jordan Leopold have 1 year left on their deals. Regehr had waived his no-trade last year to come to Buffalo, and may not want to move again. Drew Stafford has 3 more years and might get some interest. The Oilers might have interest in Stafford. Andrej Sekera has 3 years left at $2.75 million per, and might interest some teams.
- The Fourth Period: The Canadiens could move pending UFAs Andrei Kostitsyn, Travis Moen, Mathieu Darche, Hal Gill and Chris Campoli. Moen may not be moved as his agent said “he’s been given every indication that he’s in their plans.” His agent did acknowledge that a trade is still possible.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher wants to make the playoffs, but he’s not going to give up the future to do so. “When you look at it historically, when you’re talking about the rental type of trades, the vast majority of time, the team trading the player with the expiring contract and picking up future considerations almost always wins,” Fletcher said.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The Blackhawks could use a goaltender immediately, and unfortunately for them, Evgeni Nabokov is currently off the market. Nikolai Khabibulin may be the only goalie available, but he’s been inconsistent and has a 1 year left with a $3.75 million.
- BD Gallof via twitter: Islanders GM Garth Snow has confirmed that Evgeni Nabokov won’t be dealt. But if someone were to overpay …
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers have reportedly taken defenseman Andy Sutton off the trade market after signing him to a 1 year deal worth between $1.5 and $1.75 million. The Oilers could be dangling Cam Barker. They won’t give Ales Hemsky a new 4 or 5 year deal, but they might go 2 years. The Predators are looking for a top 6 forward, and have been dangling Jonathan Blum.
- Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News: Leonard lists Ray Whitney, Brad Boyes, Pavel Kubina and Hal Gill as pontential targets for the New York Rangers.
State of the Minnesota Wild: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

The Minnesota Wild are fighting for their playoff lives in the Western Conference as they are trying to stave off teams such as Phoenix, Calgary, Colorado, and Dallas who are hot on the Wild’s heels. With over $10 million in cap space and phenomenal prospects such as Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, and Jonas Brodin to name a few, the Minnesota Wild will be buyers and sellers when the deadline rolls around.
What do the Wild need to stay in contention in the West?

- Kevin Paul Dumont of the Boston Globe: The Bruins could look at Hurricanes defenseman Jaroslav Spacek and forward Tuomo Ruutu. If the Ducks make Bobby Ryan and/or Corey Perry available, the Bruins might be interested. For Ryan it may take one of Milan Lucic or David Krejci and prospect Doug Hamilton. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke to the USA Today: “Prices are inflated, and there is [only] one Stanley Cup parade at the end of the season. The trade deadline is a pit of quicksand.”
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli believes “it’s a short list” of players that will be available at the trade deadline, and there may not be a lot of movement. Many teams are still in the playoff race. The asking price for players is high. Chiarelli wonders in the talent pool is thining out, and teams are re-signing their top pending free agents instead of trading them or letting them walk at the end of the season.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils forward Zach Parise won’t be talking about his contract situation anymore. He wants to focus on hockey and not be distracted by negotiations, if possible. GM Lou Lamoriello is telling teams he isn’t trading him.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kypreos is hearing the Oilers and Andy Sutton are close on a 1 year deal in the $1.75 million range.
- Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: Several Western Conference teams might show some interested in Capitals forward Mike Knuble. Knuble was a healthy scratch on Thursday. He would cost a team a 3rd round pick. Gormley wonders if they could include Jeff Schultz and a pick or prospect for a gritty 2nd line forward like Dominic Moore, Tuomo Ruutu or P.A. Parenteau.
