Burke Talks about Leafs … Blues not going after Kovalchuk … Some Panthers could be shopped

  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke’s wish list “1. A Top-6 forward; 2. Adding more size to the roster; 3. Augmenting team toughness.” With the lack of picks at this years draft, July 1st will be their draft.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: There were rumors that the St. Louis Blues might go after a high priced scorer this off-season, but President John Davidson has said that he has no plans on pursuing one. Ilya Kovalchuk name has been mentioned as a possible free agent target, as well as Patrick Marleau. “A, it’s just too expensive, and B, the growth pattern of our club is going in the right direction. I know we had a terrible first half, but our second half, it got us back on track. We have to continue to grow like that, to put us into a position of, ‘When is the right time to try to add something that’s really going to make us a better club?’”
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: Tomas Vokoun will be shopped by the Florida Panthers, and he’s said he’d waive his no trade clause for the right situation. They might also be shopping Stephen Weiss, Nathan Horton, and Bryan McCabe.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers have 9 UFAs this year, and they may be looking to re-sign at least 3 of them, Pavel Kubina, Maxim Afinogenov, and Colby Armstrong. Kubina and Afinogenov have both said they’d be interested in returning.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Down the stretch, Johan Hedberg was the #1 goalie for Atlanta, going 11-8-3 while starting 22 of 32 games. Despite that, the 37-year-old UFA doesn’t know if he’ll be back with the Thrashers next season.

Some Players that Could be Moved … Senators looking for Dman Rental

  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Canadiens are looking to remake their roster. Tomas Vokoun, David Booth and Nathan Horton could draw some interest. The Blue Jackets are looking to move Raffi Torres, Jan Hejda, and Milan Jurcina. The Flyers, Capitals, and Blackhawks could upgrade their goaltending. The Penguins could be interested in Ray Whitney and/or Blues Dman, Barret Jackman.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators GM, Bryan Murray will be looking to add a rental defenseman. Some of their options could be Pavel Kubina, Dennis Seidenberg, Jordan Leopold, Dan Hamhuis or Brendan Bell. The Sens are still trying to sign Anton Volchenkov to a contract extension, but it might cost them Mike Komisarek dollars (5 years, $22.5 million). The Sens think that 2009 1st round pick, Jared Cowen, could be ready for the NHL next season. 2008 2nd round pick, Patrick Wiercioch, could leave the University of Denver early.

Another Kaberle Rumor … Something to Happen in Buffalo?

  • Ken Campbell of The Hockey News: The Tomas Kaberle rumors won’t go away despite Burke saying he won’t ask him to waive his no-trade clause, and Kaberle saying he wants to stay. This one has the Leafs sending Kaberle to the Canucks for prospect Cody Hodgson.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres GM, Darcy Regier has made a trade at the deadline in each of his 11 seasons. Does Regier look to add a power-play quarterback, like a Joe Corvo? Could they go after a Cory Stillman or Nathan Horton from Florida, or the gritty Ben Eager from Chicago?
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets will be trading Raffi Torres, who said he’d be fine with re-signing with them even if he’s traded, but that probably won’t happen. The money they save should go into a fund to upgrade their defense. Hejda or Klesla may not be back next season. Mike Commedore’s contract makes him hard to trade. Milan Jurcina is trade bait.
  • Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins don’t plan on trading a 1st round pick and a prospect for anyone. Cross off Ray Whitney then. Max Talbot, if he can return healthy, will be like adding someone at the deadline. The Penguins could use a big, tough, physical defenseman. Alex Goligoski might bring in that type of player.

More Trades Coming for Lou? Teams interested in Turco, Niedermayer

  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: It appears New Jersey Devils GM, Lou Lamoriello, isn’t done dealing. Rumors are floating around that he’s trying to acquire another centerman. He talked to Hurricanes about Matt Cullen and the Maple Leafs about Matt Stajan. Though not a center, there is speculation that the Devils might be interested in Alexei Ponikarovsky.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Lamoriello will also look at adding another defenseman, maybe Scott Niedermayer.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald:
    • There is still plenty of speculation in Chicago that the Blackhawks are unsure of their goaltending situation. Antti Niemi has started 4 consectuative games, and is most likely their #1 goalie. Does management think a Marty Turco would be an upgrade over Niemi? They’d also have to look at what it would cost to acquire Turco, a 1st and a prospect?
    • If the Anaheim Ducks and Scott Niedermayer decide to move on, the Blackhawks, Canucks, and Devils would be interested.
    • Are the Capitals unsure of their goaltending situation, and make a run at Marty Turco.
    • Big names in Florida that may be available; Tomas Vokoun, Nathan Horton, David Booth, Dennis Seidenberg, and Jordan Leopold.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: 3 goalies, 2 spots … What will Dallas do? If the Dallas Stars think Marty Turco has played well enough recently and is their best shot to make the playoffs, they may look at trading Alex Auld or sending him to the AHL. They could also trade Turco, which has been rumored for months, but in Heika’s opinion, they’d need to receive more than a 2nd round pick.

Panthers looking to move Horton? Too pricey for the Bruins? Cheechoo to Pittsburgh?

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Florida Panthers are looking to trade Nathan Horton, but aren’t getting the return they’d like. Horton’s work ethic could one reason, and I’m sure with his solid play before for he got hurt increased the asking price.
  • John Glennon of the Tennessean: Predators GM David Poile met with Dan Hamhuis’s agent last week, but remain apart in salary. If they were to trade Hamhuis, they’d need to bring in another Dman. They also have the 2 UFA goalies, so 1 might be moved by the deadline.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
    • The Ducks are trying to move Ryan Whitney and his $4 million cap hit that goes for another 3 years.
    • Could the Kings send Alex Frolov to the Sabres for Craig Rivet? Boston and Montreal could be interested.
    • The Kings could trade a 2nd round pick for a scoring winger. Prospects Colten Tuebert and Tomas Hickey could also be moved.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins could use a puck moving defenseman and a winger who can put the puck in the net. The asking prices have been too high for Chiarelli so far.
  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: “The deals that are out there are complete horse (expletive) right now,” the GM said a couple of hours before Friday’s trade embargo for the Olympic break kicked in. “And that’s no fault of the sellers because there are only a few sellers and they’re asking for the moon and it’s not something I’m willing to give. While you have to be careful, you can be aggressive also, and I fashion myself and my staff as proactive when it comes to these things. By the same token, a deal for the sake of a deal is usually not the right deal to make.”
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Even if the Columbus Blue Jackets trade Raffi Torres, he’d still be open to re-signing with them after July 1st. The Blue Jackets are looking for a 2nd round pick for Torres.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader writes in asking if the Penguins might bring in Jonathan Cheechoo. Molinari, doesn’t think so, and thinks that he’ll be stuck in the AHL for the remainder of the season due to his high salary.
  • Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette: New Montreal Canadiens GM, Pierre Gauthier should name a team captain. If Andre Markov is interested, he would be the leading candidate.
  • Detroit News: Johan Franzen will replace teammate Tomas Holmstrom on Team Sweden.

Heatley Trade Request? Horton, Cogliano on the Block?

Expect to start hearing that Dany Heatley wants to be traded from the San Jose Sharks, he’s been bumped to the 2nd power play line, and therefore cutting into his ice time. Don’t the Sharks know not to mess with Heatley’s ice time?

The Florida Panthers may be looking to trade C/RW under achieving Nathan Horton. Of course the Leafs will be mentioned as potential suitors for Horton, as he’s the type of player Burke likes. Horton is still only 24-25 years old and makes around $4 million. The price to acquire him will most likely be high due to his upside.

Elliot Freedman mentioned on Saturday’s hotstove that Marc Savard will be on the Leafs radar this off-season if he’s not re-signed by the Bruins. This is a rumor that will most likely linger all season long, or until he re-signs.

The Edmonton Oilers might be looking to trade Andrew Cogliano for a big centerman.

Canadiens GM, Bob Gainey, has been receiving calls regarding goalie Jaroslav Halak. With Carey Price’s play dating back to last season, it might be hard to trade away Halak.
