- John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal: Gary Bettman has invited Oilers owner Daryl Katz and Edmonton’s Mayor Stephen Mandel to New York from some constructive dialogue on the arena project.
“I invited them in because I’m concerned that the framework for a deal hasn’t been agreed upon and isn’t there yet,” Bettman said in a telephone interview on Friday. “Since time is now of the essence, I want to see if I can be helpful in getting the parties to speak the same language.”
“I’m trying to help them be able to talk to each other and understand where they are, to see whether or not they’re capable of making a deal.
“I’m trying to be a facilitator.”
They’ve been negotiating for 3 years, and Katz’s Oct. 31st deadline is fast approaching.
- JoAnne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Taylor Fedun was released from hospital and flew back to Edmonton 1 week after breaking his right femur. A decision on whether Ladislav Smid plays in tonight’s opener will be made today. Ryan Whitney’s status is also up in the air. He didn’t do any work on the power play at practice yesterday, which may mean he isn’t ready to go.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Jarome Iginla will be in the Flames lineup for their season opener.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Thomas Greiss will be in net for the Sharks opener tonight against the Coyotes.
“Antti is very close to being healthy enough,” McLellan said. “When you talk about health, you’re talking physically and mentally. There’s a recovery from injury and finding your game. Our schedule has been kind to us because we get a few days off again before we play next. We would rather target that than opening night.”
Their next game after the opener is next Friday.
- David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri “more than likely” will play a few games with the Marlies once he’s healthy according to Ron Wilson.

- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Aaron Volpatti and Victor Oreskovich have made the Canucks for the time being. An injury to Steve Pinizzotto may have handed the spot to Oreskovich. Volpatti beat out Mike Duco and Todd Fedoruk. Cody Hodgson will start the season centering Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm on the 2nd line. Predators GM David Poile met with the agents for both Pekka Rinne and Ryan Suter last week about a contract extension. They are aggressively trying to sign both. Weber can’t do an extension until January 1st. There haven’t been any talks between Drew Doughty and the Kings. LeBrun thinks the Kings will reach out to Newport Sports soon. The Leafs have been working the phones, Carl Gunnarsson and Tyler Bozak have been discussed but nothing is close as of last night. Talks between Niklas Kronwall the Red Wings are underway regarding a contract extension. Dreger is reporting that Kronwall is looking for a long-term, front loaded deal similar to Christian Ehrhoff’s. On front-loaded deals the Sabres have been handing out: “I’m sorry, but that’s killing this industry,” one NHL GM, requesting anonymity, told ESPN.com. “We have to stop those front-loaded contracts in the next system.”

A quiet Leafs summer … Hulsizer candidate to by Blues … Possible retirees this year and next
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 22nd, 2011
- George Popalis of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs have been quiet this summer with regards to the free agent market, not doing anything since Tim Connolly, and it’s probably a good thing. Over paying for someone and talking away a roster spot for a someone in their young core may not be the best for the team. Nazem Kadri, Joe Colborne, Luca Caputi, Matt Frattin, Jerry D’Amigo, Jake Gardiner and Jesse Blacker are all in their early 20′s and deserve a good look at camp.

The deadline to submit a bid is today. Current minority owner Tom Stillman is also expected to make a bid.

- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: Fan 590 radio host Bob McCown said that at least 3 members of the Winnipeg Jets are actively trying to get out of Winnipeg.
“Guys are not going to want to play there,” said McCown.
“I have first-hand knowledge of no less than three members of the Atlanta Thrashers, no fewer than three, who are now Winnipeg Jets, who are actively pursuing alternatives. Not the least of the problems, there’s no place to live, in the style that an NHL player has become accustomed to. Are there upscale homes? I’m sure there are. But they’re not available and they’re not for rent.”
Captain Andrew Ladd, who signed a 5 year deal with the team, had this to say in response:
“I haven’t heard that, but if there are guys that don’t want to be in Winnipeg then we don’t want them anyway,” said Ladd. “We want people that want to be part of a good hockey organization that’s going to create a winning culture. From everyone I’ve talked to — I haven’t heard any of that.”

They reportedly were shopping Sergei Gonchar and Filip Kuba at the draft but found no takers. Gonchar has 2 years at $5.5 million, Kuba has 1 year at $3.7 million. “They can’t afford to just give Kuba away if they are going to trade him,” said a league executive. “They’re going to have to be willing to take some salary back.”
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: There are still some veteran UFAs out there who could be looking for a tryout. “We haven’t ruled out an invitation,” Burke told Sun Media. “But most likely we will give the kids a look.” Some of their young players include Nazem Kadri, Joe Colborne, Luca Caputi, Matt Frattin, Jerry D’Amigo and defencemen Jake Gardiner and Jesse Blacker. Tyler Biggs, Stuart Percy, Brad Ross and Greg McKegg are at least a year away. Agent Don Meehan said there is “Nothing new” on contract talks between the Maple Leafs and Luke Schenn.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Michel Nylander says he wants to return to the NHL after his playing his first game since he broke his neck.

Flames-Canes trade was in works for awhile … Ryder to minors? Guerin to Pens? Caps won’t trade a goalie … Bruins having trouble with trades
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 18th, 2010
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Flames-Hurricanes trade had been in the works for weeks, before Brett Sutter’s arrest. Bob McKenzie reports that the Flames had to call the Hurricanes to see if they would still be interested in Sutter after his arrest. Vickie Hall via twitter: According to Jay Feaster, with the Mark Giordano signing there was no chance that Ian White would be re-signed.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks Michael Ryder and his $4 million will be sent to the minors when Marco Sturm and Marc Savard return from LTIR.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: At the Lightning-Islanders game last night, Coyotes GM Don Maloney and their Director of Pro Scouting, as well as the Sharks Director of Pro Scouting (John Ferguson Jr.) and another scout.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: There is a good chance that Bill Guerin will join the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in an undefined role.
- James Mirtle via twitter: It looks like a Jonas Gustavsson versus Martin Brodeur matchup between the pipes tonight.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: The Maple Leafs are following Chicago’s use of Patrick Kane with the Nazem Kadri, keeping him on the wing and away from opponents top line. Last year the Avalanche were offering John-Michael Liles and his $4.2 million salary to anyone, he has 16 points in 17 games as of Tuesday. Capitals GM George McPhee said he won’t trade any of Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth or Braden Holtby. According to one GM speaking of the Boston Bruins, “No one’s interested in the first couple of players they are offering.” What about the third guy? “Yes, we’d have some interest, but the Bruins are not prepared to do that, yet.” Garth Snow said Scott Gordon’s firing was his call and not owner Charles Wang.

11:06am:
- Rob Longley via twitter: At Leafs practice. Kadri on a line with Kulemin and Bozak. Other top line is Kessel, MacArthur and Grabovski.
10:36 am:
- Greg Brady via twitter: People who Brady respect say that “Jerry D’Amigo’s more “NHL-ready” than Nazem Kadri, but D’Amigo wouldn’t satiate Leafs fanbase.”
9:50 am:
- Burke told Gord Stellick before the Panthers game that the Maple Leafs would try “other ways” to improve their offense rather than recalling Nazem Kadri. Well the “other ways” didn’t last too long. Let the debate if the Maple Leafs are bringing up Nazem Kadri at the right time begin.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Toronto Maple Leafs have called up Nazem Kadri and Keith Aulie.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie notes that this is “NOT” what the Leafs wanted to do.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Friedman thinks that this means they are pressing the panic button. Friedman also asks, Is Kadri really ready to play against top-line guys in Eastern Conference?
I think the best time to call up Kadri would have been if/when the Leafs fire Ron Wilson. Two stories would deflect some attention away from Kadri.
I’ll continue to add some pieces to this entry through out the day.
Staal breaks hand … Doughty to have ‘baseline’ test today … Pominville to return tomorrow … Burrows back today
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 2nd, 2010
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal was getting ready to return to the Penguins lineup this week, but will now be out 6 weeks. Staal took a puck to the hand, breaking it, and will undergo surgery today.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Drew Doughty was wearing a no-contact jersey at Kings practice yesterday. Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: If everything is well when Doughty wakes up today, he’ll do the ‘baseline’ test today.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Jason Pominville appears to be ready to go for Wednesday game against the Bruins. Pominville’s return will be a welcome for the 3-7-2 Sabres. Ryan Miller missed practiced yesterday with a none serious, lower-body injury.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Jason Arnott feels he did nothing wrong to deserve the benching, “Not in my mind. It’s been a little weird this season.” Arnott leads the team in scoring with 6 points and has the second worst team +/- at -9.
- David Goricki of the Detroit News: Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood is day-to-day with a groin injury, he left practice yesterday after 10 minutes. Jimmy Howard was back on the ice and will start on Wednesday. Brian Rafalski left with the team on their road trip, he might return next Monday when they return home.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman doesn’t think he needs to acquire another player anytime soon, “If anything, I don’t know if it’s anything personnel-wise we have to change,” Bowman said. “It’s just getting acclimated to the new group we have here, and bringing in another new face really wouldn’t be the answer. The 2012 NHL draft may be held at the United Center.
- The Daily Herald: The Chicago Blackhawks activated Brian Campbell yesterday and placed David Bolland on IR. Bolland had 3 points in 12 games this season.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs are sticking by their guns with regards to letting Nazem Kadri develop in the AHL for now. The offensively challenged called up Christian Hansen and Luca Caputi last week, and left the Marlies leading scorer (4 goals, 4 assists in 8 games) to continue to work in his game in the minors. “It’s exactly the right situation,” Marlies coach Dallas Eakins said. “You know what, he has enough skill and creativity right now to play in the NHL. The problem is, that skill and creativity will be just greatly exposed [when he makes mistakes] and he would be the goat in the NHL.” Don Cherry doesn’t agree and let his feeling be known on Coaches’ Corner on Saturday.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Burrows will return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup tonight versus the Oilers. Burrows has been recovering for the last 5 months from shoulder surgery.
