Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 7th, 2012
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Friedman thinks the Mikhail Grabovski’s deal could have been done a week or 2 ago but Burke may have wanted to see if he would get a crazy offer at the deadline. It’s rumored that the Stars wanted Cody Hodgson for Steve Ott. The Leafs tried to get Hodgson as well. The Canucks ‘targeted” a few clubs that they thought had the match they wanted. Friedman thinks they liked Brandon Sutter from the Hurricanes and John Carlson of the Capitals. Former Oilers Tom Gilbert said he didn’t demand a trade.

- Andrew Gross of the Bergon Record: Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky left last night’s game in the first period after getting into a fight with Ryan Carter.

Deadline notes … Rangers made one last offer for Nash, Blue Jackets wanted different players … Panthers weren’t close on deals
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 28th, 2012
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Sharks will be getting Douglas Murray and Martin Havlat back before the playoffs. Talks between them and the Blue Jackets for Rick Nash hit a roadblock when the Sharks refused to include Logan Couture. The Sharks did inquire about James van Riemsdyk. The Stars received about “12 to 14″ inquires over the past couple weeks for Steve Ott. The Canucks were offering Mason Raymond, but that wasn’t enough. The Stars were not going to trade Ott for picks or prospects. Burke didn’t trade any of his players for 1st round picks as he didn’t want to send the message to his players that they were giving up on the playoffs. The Capitals took calls on Roman Hamrlik but didn’t find a fit. The Red Wings looked at Paul Gaustad but didn’t have a 1st.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he’ll continue to try and trade Rick Nash in the offseason. “This is too important for our franchise and our fans to do a deal that is not in our best interest.” The Rangers made a late offer of Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and a 1st round pick. Howson added:
“I’ve had many teams express that they would have a ton more interest in the offseason,”“I just think it was the right thing to do, the truthful thing to do,” Howson said.“We wanted to make sure that everybody understood where everybody was on this issue because it’s a very important issue for our franchise.
“I think things will continue to be amicable between Rick and the organization.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks also noted the Rangers upped their offer to Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and a 1st round pick. Howson was after Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin, Chris Kreider, and a 1st round pick.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers GM Dale Tallon said he didn’t come close to making a deal. There was talk that they might move pending UFA defenseman Jason Garrison, but decided against it.
“We made a lot of phone calls and identified what we wanted to add to our lineup,’’ Tallon said. “We couldn’t get what we wanted without mortgaging our future. There just wasn’t a lot of activity. … I’m happy with our team. We improved it. We’re going to stay with the team that has 70 points, is in first place and is battling for a playoff spot.’’
Rick Nash Trade Rumors
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 26th, 2012
I’ll continue to add Rick Nash trade rumors to this post, bumping old ones to a jump page when it gets to long. Here are links to 2 previous entries HC Rick Nash Trade Tracker Videos and Rumors, and Blue Jackets put Rick Nash on the trade market.
Feb. 26th 8:15 PM
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Obviously possible Rick Nash could move by tomorrow but it were close in any way do you think CBJ would’ve played him today?”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Teams that have the most interest in Nash don’t think he’ll be moved and are looking at other players.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Rangers weren’t willing to pay the price for Nash prior to today, and today the Blue Jackets asked for more than they initially asked for. Can’t really blame the Rangers for not wanting to blow up their team to make a Nash deal.
- Spector’s Hockey via twitter: Sportsnet Marty McSorley said that latest word is the Rangers are out on Nash.
11:15 AM
- David Boclair of the Nashville City Paper: The Predators have made an offer Nash. It’s unlikely the Blue Jackets would want to trade within their division. The Preds offer could include: Colin Wilson, Ryan Ellis or Jonathan Blum and multiple picks and/or prospects
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Blue Jackets haven’t spoken with the Maple Leafs in days. Leafs will keep trying, but Gardiner remains untouchable.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Belief before the Maple Leafs loss to the Capitals that the Leafs interest in Nash was minimal, and they they were driving up the price for the Rangers.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: The Flyers are still talking with Blue Jackets about Nash, but nothing serious has developed. The Jackets want several of the Flyers young players.
9:00 AM
- The Fourth Period: The Rangers may include Carl Hagelin (Rangers want Stepan) to go along with Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider and a 1st round pick. The Blue Jackets are asking the Maple Leafs for Jake Gardiner, Joe Colborne, Matt Frattin and a 1st round pick.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Leafs, Rangers, and Sharks have offers in on Rick Nash, and have all said the offer could be better in the summer. The Rangers and Leafs are being aggressive as they have more parts to offer than the Sharks.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Sharks are still interested in Nash, but could probably make a better offer in the offseason. The Maple Leafs and Rangers are still in.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson should go after Derek Stepan over Brandon Dubinsky. Howson wants Chris Kreider, the Rangers best prospect. He also wants either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto, but McDonagh isn’t going anywhere. Dylan McIlray or Tim Erixon are also options. After the Carter deal, defense is not a top priority for Howson. He could use some 1st round picks to take a run at Canucks Cory Schneider this offseason. They already have their own and the Kings.
Feb. 25th 9:50 PM:
- Spector’s Hockey via twitter: Elliotte Friedman suggested on the Hotstove that the Blue Jackets might not move Nash by Monday. They’ve shifted their focus to forwards for Nash.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Botta can see the Rangers best offer for Nash as Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, a 2012 1st round pick and a conditional pick based on Rangers success the next 2 years.
- Todd Cordell via twitter: Bob McKenzie reported that the Canucks are jumping into the trade market, with Nash a possibility.
4:40 PM
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Rick Nash’s agent spoke with TSN and said the following: “We’re hopeful a deal can get done prior to the trade deadline that is fair and equitable for the Blue Jackets…” .. “However, if a deal is not reached, then the list of acceptable teams will not change at a later date.”
2:05 PM
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Rangers remain firm that they aren’t going to trade Michael Del Zotto or Ryan McDonagh in a deal with Columbus for Nash.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Hearing that the Blue Jackets want Derek Stepan badly, but might settle for Carl Hagelin. Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider, Stepan or Hagelin, and a pick (may not be a 1st). There could be more coming from the Blue Jackets. May boil today to Stepan or Hagelin.
9:00 AM
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: “No guarantees #CBJ captain Rick Nash is traded by Monday’s deadline, but might be best for all parties to have a quick ending to this.” …”#CBJ have set the bar very high and are waiting for other teams to meet their requirements. So far, none of them have done so.” … “#CBJ approach is that they don’t have to trade Nash, but several possible suitors and the Nash camp are getting impatient w the process.” … “Might be best if #CBJ fans come to terms with the fact that Nash is likely going to be traded. Might not happen at deadline, but …” … “… chances of Nash being with the Blue Jackets at the start of next season are slim.”
Dustin Brown Trade Rumors
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on February 25th, 2012
With Kings forward Dustin Brown apparently hitting the trade market, I’ve created post just for him. Will update this entry with rumors from now until he’s traded or the deadline passes.
Feb. 25th
- The Fourth Period: The Leafs are interested in Brown, but the Kings are looking for immediate help and could want Clarke MacArthur and Nikolai Kulemin.
Feb. 25th
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: From what he’s been told, a Dustin Brown trade has nothing to do with leadership issues, and everything to do with one teams need. Bernstein thinks it’s 50-50 that Brown is traded.
Feb. 24th 5:10 PM:
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi is telling inquiring GMs that Dustin Brown is not available. It is possible that Kings are backtracking after Brown’s name was leaked? Friedman thinks that Brown was made available to at least 2 teams, it got out and then snowballed. If those teams step up, Friedman wonders if a deal could still go down.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: If the Kings are seeking a NHL ready defenseman for Brown, Brooks doesn’t think it’s a match with the Rangers.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brown fits the Maple Leafs thirst for a power forward. Brown has a cap friendly $3.2 million for the next 2 years. The Bruins, Rangers and Flyers are among the interested.
10:30 AM:
- Darren Dreger via twitter: It may take a quality young defenseman and a solid secondary scorer to get Brown.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Teams with high levels of interest for Brown: Bruins, Sabres, Oilers, Devils, Rangers, Flyers, Maple Leafs and Canucks.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: “Why trade Brown? IMO, LAK like Brown as “player,” not as enthused about Brown as captain. IMO, only matter of time til Mike Richards gets C”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun thinks the Maple Leafs would deal Luke Schenn straight up for Brown, but the Kings will want more. The Kings would probably do a Schenn and Matt Frattin for Brown deal, but that would likely be too much for the Leafs.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: Bruins Brad Marchand is only $800,000 cheaper than Dustin Brown. If the Kings are looking to shed salary in a Brown deal, it make take a Jared Knight/Ryan Spooner and a 1st.
Feb 23rd:
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Kings forward Dustin Brown may now be available, which puts more heat on the Blue Jackets to make a decision on Nash. The Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Flyers are just a few teams that would be interested. Jim Matheson via twitter: If Brown is available, Matheson thinks Eastern Conference teams will be all over him even with the 2 remaining years. The Bruins and Capitals could be interested. Tim Panaccio via twitter: A source said that the Flyers can’t get serious on Brown because of salary cap issues. Andy Strickland via twitter: “In a salary cap world where every GM wants value for the $ why would LA trade Dustin Brown? Has maybe the best contract in the NHL.”
NY Rangers trade Wojtek Wolski to Panthers
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on February 25th, 2012
The New York Rangers have traded forward Wojtek Wolski to the Florida Panthers. According to Darren Dreger the Rangers will receive a 2013 3rd round pick and minor league player Michael Vernace.
Wolski carries a $3.8 million salary cap hit, and will be a RFA at the end of the year. Vernace carries a $525,000 cap hit.
Darren Dreger via twitter: One of the reasons the Panthers traded for Wolski is the fact that he’s very good in shootouts.
Jesse Spector via twitter: Trading Wolski frees up cap room, get a good return for him, and it gets rid of a player their coach had no use for.

Kings Dustin Brown may be available now … Oilers make last push to re-sign Hemsky … Goalies Leafs may look at … Wings looking at F’s

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Teams are circling with interest in Ales Hemsky, but don’t rule out the Oilers making one last push to re-sign him. 2 years and $10 million ($5 million per season) might keep him there. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Postgame buzz last night had GM Steve Tambellini in the dressing room to meet with Hemsky.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Initial plan is to play Jeff Carter on right winger with Mike Richards.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Leafs GM Brian Burke confirmed on the radio that he’ll check out the goalie market to see what’s there. It was discussed for the first time on Wednesday. Goalie possibilities are: Evgeni Nabokov, Josh Harding, Anders Lindback, Curtis Sanford, J.S, Giguere, Antero Niittymaki, Scott Clemmensen and Ben Bishop.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Goalies that Burke will look into are, Evgeni Nabokov, Nikolai Khabibulin, Josh Harding, Anders Lindback and JS Giguere.
- Curtis Zupke via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi on other possible trades: ”Right now I got absolutely nothing.”
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The Kings could use Jarrett Stoll as an asset now. He’s been misused all season.
- Bob Duff via twitter: 2 forwards that Duff is hearing most often linked to Red Wings are Mikael Samuelsson of the Panthers and Travis Moen of the Canadiens.
- Toronto Sun: (from their NHL trade rumors ‘slideshow’) Players listed: Ales Hemsky, Zach Parise , Teemu Selanne, Shane Doan, Ryan Suter, Ryan Miller, Ryan Malone, Rick Nash, Ray Whitney, Paul Gaustad, P.A. Parenteau, Mikhail Grabovski, Mike Knuble, Michal Rozsival, Luke Schenn, Kyle Wellwood, Jonathan Bernier, Jason Blake, Dustin Penner, Dennis Wideman, David Jones, Brian Rolston, Brad Boyes, Andrei Kostitsyn, Alex Semin.
More rumors and notes involving: Sharks, Kings, Sabres, Avs, Capitals, Oilers, Maple Leafs, Devils, Blackhawks, Stars and Flames
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 23rd, 2012
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying the San Jose Sharks are looking into deals for Blue Jackets Rick Nash and Jeff Carter. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is still looking to get a 1st round pick, a good roster player, and the top prospect in that organization for Nash. For the Sharks the roster player may be Logan Couture or Joe Pavelski. Carter may cost a 1st round pick and to take on more salary with another player. A source said Nash could cost the Kings Jonathan Bernier or Jack Johnson, Tyler Toffoli and a 1st round pick. The Sabres could start dealing soon, but don’t expect to see Ryan Miller trade. Paul Gaustad and Derek Roy are getting interest. Teams are waiting to see if the Avalanche will become sellers, and if Milan Hejduk will becomes available. If the Capitals become sellers, Mike Knuble might become available, and could get interest from the Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings, and Blackhawks. Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik was a healthy scratch and may have interest from the Canucks and Blues. The Oilers and Ales Hemsky have held discussions on a multi-year deal. The Kings, Rangers, Bruins and Sharks may be interested in Hemsky.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke on TSN Radio yesterday:
“I’m not sure that we’re not going to be in the market [for a goalie] before we’re done,” Burke said. “It’s something that we have to at least explore what the price tags are. The fact is we’re losing games because we’re not stopping the puck enough. … We’ve got to get our goaltenders to stop the puck.”
Burke made it clear that he’s looking for immediate help and not prospects. Mirtle lists potential goalies that may be available: Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier, Josh Harding, Evgeni Nabokov, Ben Bishop, Curtis Sanford, and Antero Niittymaki.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The Devils could use some help on the blueline due to Henrik Tallinder’s and Adam Larsson’s injuries. Travis Zajac’s injury may lead them to look at adding a center. The Devils may not have room in their ‘secret payroll budget’ to fit in Marek Zidlicky’s contract. Canadiens Chris Campoli could be an option. Since the Jets are back in the playoff hunt, Johnny Oduya is likely off the market. Bryan Allen, Jaroslav Spacek and Lubomir Vishnovsky would be expensive to get.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks Jonathan Toews’ has an upper-body injury and won’t play tonight. Coach Joel Quenneville said he’s day-to-day and they hope he can skate on Friday. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson skated for the 4th straight day and could return tonight.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is still looking for a top 4 puck moving defenseman, and a veteran forward, preferably a center. He’s said he’d move picks and prospects, and has a tendency to look for players who are not just rentals. Stars Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro may be available, but their cost could be high. Blackhawks Jimmy Hayes is said to interest teams. The Hawks were said to have interest in Kyle Quincey and Nicklas Grossman before they were dealt. The Leafs could be looking to move Cody Franson or Luke Schenn.
- Kevin McGran via twitter: Burke on TSN Radio “I’m not interested in just making the playoffs and getting my ass kicked. I want to have a parade.”
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Richard Bachman will start in net tonight for the Stars. Defenseman Sheldon Souray will return, Jamie Benn is doubtful.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Flames winger Curtis Glencross and defenseman Derek Smith could return tonight.
Quick hits on: Blue Jackets, Ott, Harding, Hurricanes, Avery, Bertuzzi, Radulov, Sharks and Prust
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2012
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said that ownership has been very supportive so far, and that trade talks have become more focused. He also noted that he’s received lots of “creativity” in trade interest with several of their players.
- Kevin Allen via twitter: There may be more interest in Stars Steve Ott if he wasn’t making $3.2 million next year.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Wild have recalled goalie Matt Hackett due to a Josh Harding minor injury. It’s not trade related.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said he did not set a deadline day for re-signing Tuomo Ruutu. Some assumed that he did since he mentioned he expected a decision by mid-week. Rutherford added: “We’ve worked very hard on it and gone as far as we can go. We’re hoping he’s staying and will get a positive answer from him.” He also said he didn’t expect to be active leading up to the deadline. “I say that now, but you can get surprised.” The Hurricanes also hope to get Joni Pitkanen back in the lineup in the next 10 days.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: One of the Sharks star players wouldn’t be opposed to them adding Sean Avery, saying the veterans could handle him. Sharks management may not be on the same page as their star player though.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings and Todd Bertuzzi are closing in on a 2 year contract extension worth close to $2.2 million per season.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Alexander Radulov is saying the Predators are “pressing” him to return to the NHL.
- Nick Cotsonika via twitter: From Cotsonika’s interview with Sharks GM Wilson, he said that the early deals are the best but “sellers can sometimes dictate that if they’re going to put a guy on the market or not.” In other words, Wilson may prefer to make a big deal in the summer.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers have begun talks with pending free agent Brandon Prust. Other Rangers free agents are Ruslan Fedotenko, Martin Biron, Steve Eminger, John Mitchell and Jeff Woywitka.
Leafs Dmen getting interest … Avs knew Quincey would be flipped … Stars getting calls on Ott and Ribeiro … Hemsky’s worth … plus more notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2012
- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Maple Leafs blueline continues to get interest. Jake Gardiner is not available. Teams are looking at Luke Schenn, but Burke won’t move him unless they get an offer he can’t refuse. Carl Gunnarsson, Cody Franson and Keith Aulie are getting interest. The Blackhawks, Red Wings, Devils, Oilers and Jets are looking for defenseman. The Oilers are looking for a roster player for Ales Hemsky, which is too steep for many given his struggles.
- John Shannon via twitter: Avalanche GM Greg Sherman knew that Lightning GM Steve Yzerman was going to flip Kyle Quincy to a Western Conference team, but didn’t know where.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Stars have gotten calls on Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro, and would consider moving them if the price is right. Ribeiro has a limited no trade clause, he selects 10 teams he won’t go to. Ribeiro has one more year left on his deal with a $5 million cap hit. Ott has 2 years left on his deal with a $2.95 million cap hit, but a salary of $3.2 million. GM Joe Nieuwendyk is looking at the big picture and is looking long-term. LeBrun notes that he could make a move or 2 that surprises people.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Ales Hemsky is available but comes with “a lack of durability and questionable work ethic.” He hasn’t scored in 16 games, so his asking price is modest now. It may take a small collection of mid-round picks and/or a prospect. Possible teams interested are: Rangers, Predators, Bruins, Kings and Red Wings.
- Helene St. James via twitter: Red Wings GM Ken Holland: Wings “are done on defense.”
- Rob Longley via twitter: Colby Armstrong was a healthy scratch last night again. You have to wonder what the rest of the season holds for him.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Evgeni Nabokov will get his $2-$3 million, but he needs to know if Rick DiPietro is still in the plans to get NHL starts while rehabbing.
- Dave Hilson of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs center Mikhail Grabovski hasn’t heard anything regarding contract talks between his agent and the Leafs. He’d like to stay in Toronto.
- Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski on is name in trade rumors:
“I know I’m supposed to be getting traded, I hear it all the time,” said Wolski, who becomes a restricted free agent after his two-year, $7.6 million expires at the end of the season. “I know I have a big contract. If they could trade me and free some space and get some value, I’m sure it’s possible. But I have no control over any of that.”
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Scouting the Kings-Coyotes: 2 Lightning, Blue Jackets, Blues, Hurricanes, Stars, Canucks, Avalanche and Rangers.
Pens would like a 40 goal scorer, but … Sens interested in Ruutu, listening to offers on Kuba and Gonchar … Buyers, Sellers, etc … Havlat skating
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 20th, 2012
- Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins GM Ray Shero:
“We’re playing well, getting healthy, and that means more than anything. If I could get a 40-goal scorer or something that makes sense, I’d do that. But …”
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Many are looking to see what Senators GM Bryan Murray will do. The Senators are interested in Tuomo Ruutu, along with the Bruins, Rangers, Flyers, Blackhawks and Predators. Though there are some reports that he’s off the market, one executive said Saturday that he wasn’t. To get Ruutu could be costly, a top prospect (perhaps Mark Stone or Stefan Noesen) and a 1st round pick, which is not going to happen. The Senators have been listening to offers for Filip Kuba. It’s doubtful that it happens, but is possible. Sergei Gonchar could also get dealt.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: McGran lists teams that will be buyers, sellers or will stand pat. Buyers: Rangers, Maple Leafs, Flyers, Capitals, Sharks, Canucks, Kings, Predators, Blackhawks, Devils and Stars. Sellers: Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Oilers, Lightning, Sabres, Wild and Canadiens. Standing Pat: Red Wings, Flames, Islanders, Senators, Jets, Ducks, Bruins, Panthers, Penguins, Blues, Coyotes and Avalanche. Hot Commodities: Rick Nash, Ryan Suter, Jeff Carter, Luke Schenn, Sam Gagner and Ryan Miller. Buyer Beware: Scott Gomez, Rick DiPietro, Alexander Semin, Dustin Penner and Brad Boyes. Coveted Young Players: Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier, Sergei Bobrovski, James van Riemsdyk, Jake Gardiner, Cody Hodgson, Michael Del Zotto and Ryan McDonagh
- Randy Miller via twitter: Miller doesn’t think the chances of the Flyers re-signing Matt Carle are good.
- David Pollak via twitter: Sharks winger Marty Havlat is skating in San Jose and is aiming for a mid-March return.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin didn’t finish last night’s game after he tweaked his groin, but it may also have been exhaustion. Canucks defenseman Keith Ballard is out with concussion symptoms.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The Devils have put defenseman Adam Larsson on the IR, and have recalled Peter Harrold.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Wild have re-signed Kyle Brodziak to a 3 year deal worth $8.49 million.
Afternoon rumors involving: Blue Jackets, Jets, Sabres, Canadiens, Bruins, Flyers, Rangers, Kings, Avalanche, Islanders, Crosby, Hunter and starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2012
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets don’t expect to make any trades this weekend, but one phone call could change that.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said yesterday there’s no doubt he’s a buyer. “I’m always going to be trying to acquire assets. I’m always looking to make our team better for the future.” “It’s not just other teams asking about (our young players),” he said. “There are a lot of things that are talked about.” Cheveldayoff said there hasn’t been any contract extension talk with any of their pending UFAs: Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Tim Stapleton, Johnny Oduya, Randy Jones, Mark Flood and Chris Mason.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Burnside thinks it’s time for the Sabres to start making some deals. The Canadiens should find a taker for Hal Gill and perhaps Andrei Kostitsyn. Travis Moen and Chris Campoli could also be moved. The Bruins and Rangers will both be looking to add some depth along the blueline. A source said the Flyers could also be looking at adding another Dman. Hurricanes Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek will be UFAs. Luke Schenn could be had if it helps the Leafs land a top 6 forward. The Kings Jack Johnson could be in play, but they’d need to get a top forward back
- Adrian Deter of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche will move a defenseman, with Shane O’Brien making sense. Dater also thinks teams will be interested Ryan Wilson, Ryan O’Byrne and Kyle Quincey.
- David Hutchinson of the Star Ledger: The Devils are looking for a veteran defenseman. Marek Zidlicky is one possibility, and he’s already waived his no trade clause for them.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Islanders are looking for a top 4 defenseman.
- Pens Inside Scoop via twitter: Penguins Sidney Crosby skated with teammates today because of ice time availability. No change in his status.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins forward Rich Peverley is out 4 to 6 weeks with a grade 3 MCL sprain in his right knee.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: The Kings have put Trent Hunter on waivers.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Jonas Hiller will start in net for the Ducks tonight against Martin Brodeur and the Devils.
- Harvey Fialkov via twitter: Tomas Vokoun will start for the Capitals against Jose Theodore and the Panthers.
- Marc Antoine Godin via twitter: Carey Price will start in net for the Canadiens against the Sabres.
Leafs get offer for Grabovski … Kings making calls … Jets could use some scoring … Flyers could still be looking at D … Oilers notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2012
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs have been offered a 2nd round pick and a prospect for center Mikhail Grabovski. They could get more, and they still hope to re-sign him. The Leafs may keep Grabovski despite contract status, but will consider a 1st round pick, or the existing offer. James Mirtle via twitter: The only way Mirtle sees the Maple Leafs letting Grabovski go is if his contract demands are way to high. The next 10 days will be interesting.
- Scott Burnside and Craig Custance of ESPN: As of yesterday afternoon, the Ducks were 6 points out a playoff spot after a 14-2-3 run. Don’t count on a Ducks fire sale now. Kings GM Dean Lombardi is under pressure to fix their offensive issues, and could be burning the phone lines with Columbus. The Kings may benefit the most from a Rick Nash deal more than any other team. Jeff Carter may be a better fit salary wise for the Kings.
- Jonathan Willis of Hockey Prospectus on ESPN: Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman could be an option for the Capitals. He’s under contract next season, and has fallen out of favor in Anaheim. Canadiens defenseman Chris Campoli could interest the Panthers. Islanders defenseman Milan Jurcina may be a nice fit in Winnipeg.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets forward Andrew Ladd on what they need at the deadline:
“With the troubles we’ve had scoring, if it’s not going to come from within this room, we probably could use some help, there,” he said. “We’ve got a great goaltender, we’ve got D that can move the puck and play both ways.”
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Talk of the Leafs doing a deal with the Flyers including Luke Schenn may be off now that they acquired Nicklas Grossman. Mirtle thinks the smart move for the Maple Leafs may be to sit still and take their lumps in the playoffs if they make it.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Flyers would like to add 1 more defenseman and looking at all options: Luke Schenn, Jack Johnson and Hal Gill.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: If the Blues were to make a trade for a defenseman, it would be a for a left handed shot. Pavel Kubina doesn’t fit.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Pierre McGuire said the Devils, Rangers and Bruins would have had interest in Ryan Smyth.
- Louis Jean via twitter: The Canadiens like Travis Moen and are considering keeping him.
- John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini won’t jeopardize their young core:
“At no time are we going to be selling anything that is going to hurt our future, what we think is part of our core or something that is going to sustain good play for a long time,” Tambellini told reporters during an Oilers practice at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park. “If it’s something we feel will make us significantly better, long-term and short-term, of course we’ll consider it.
“But nothing for just a short-term gain.”
Ales Hemsky’s desire for a long term deal may signal his end in Edmonton. Tambellini said he isn’t looking to deal Sam Gagner or Nikolai Khabibulin. The Oilers would like to improve along the blueline. Oscar Klefbom and juniors David Musil, Martin Marincin and Martin Gernat are a couple years away.

HC Rick Nash Trade Tracker Video … Plus other Rick Nash trade rumors
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on February 15th, 2012
- John Shannon on where Nash could land: Rangers, Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Kings. Lawton lists: Rangers, Kings, Red Wings and Flyers. Both say they need to get a young starting goalie back.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Sure the Maple Leafs will be interested in Nash, but it would take a lot to pull it off, with the price getting higher with each passing day. Zeisberger lists some factors that will come into play: 1. Nash’s no-movement clause. He drives the bus. 2. Nash is in the 2nd year of a 8 year, $62.4 million deal, a $7.8 million cap hit. 3. The Blue Jackets are not actively shopping Nash, but will consider offers, and the price will be huge. Maple Leafs names you’ll hear will at least be Mikhail Grabovski, Luke Schenn, Nazem Kadri, James Reimer and Carl Gunnarsson.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: The Blue Jackets met last week to discuss Nash’s future, and decide to explore a trade. Apparently, they went to Nash a couple weeks ago about the idea, and were waiting for him to submit a list. Nash was willing to waive his no-movement as they were looking at another rebuild. The Blue Jackets currently have more than $50 million committed against the salary cap next year. 3 aspects that make a Nash deal complicated are: Nash must want to go there, that team has to pay the high asking price, and Nash has to fit into that teams cap structure and dressing room. On the surface the Canucks could be a perfect match with Cory Schneider, Cody Hodgson, Chris Tanev and maybe another piece, but don’t look for that to happen. The Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Flyers may not be scared of adding him. “The tough thing about trades like this one,” said another GM, “is that Columbus is starting in a bad position. Chances are, you’re giving up the best player.” The Maple Leafs may not have what GM Scott Howson wants, mainly goaltending. The Flyers and Kings may have the goalie the Blue Jackets need.
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets management came to Rick Nash, he did not request a trade. Nash had a feeling they might come asking. Nash did not want a trade, and until last week, they were telling teams he wasn’t going to be traded. There is a chance nothing happens at the deadline and they wait until the summer. Arace wonders that if president Mike Priest and GM Scott Howson put the team in this predicament, how can they be the ones to fix it?
- Adam Kimelman of NHL.com: G Scott Howson told the Columbus Dispatch:
“We’re open to all options to try to improve the team,” Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson told the newspaper this morning. “As far as rumors go, we’re just not going to comment.”
and Rick Nash said to the Dispatch:
“The last couple of weeks there have been so many rumors,” Nash told the newspaper following the team’s morning skate. “And when a team loses, more rumors keep on surfacing. That’s what it seems to be right now, is just rumors.
“I’m a Blue Jacket right now. I’ve played my whole career here and it’s a special place to me. So as of right now I’m a Blue Jacket.”
Scott Howson to NHL.com on Saturday:
“I’m not going to disclose what we’re going to do, but we certainly have a plan in place,” Howson told NHL.com. “We’re working on it, we’re talking to teams. We’ll see … it’s not just a pre-deadline plan. It’s a plan leading up to the draft and leading into next season. We’ll see what happens before the 27th and we expect to be active.”
- TSN Tradecenter video link: McKenzie notes it could be a 5 team list, and that they could be looking for a young goalie, defenseman and forward for Nash. Canucks, Maple Leafs, Kings, Rangers and Flyers could be the teams. Too many assets to give up, cap number, and how it affects the dressing room are concerns for teams. Brandon Dubinsky’s name has come up with the Rangers. James van Riemsdyk would have be in the mix for the Flyers. The Kings have pieces like Jonathan Bernier, Andrei Loktionov and Slava Voynov. Wild card teams could be the Bruins and Sharks.
Not so fast on Zidlicky to Devils … Lightning to be sellers … Holmgren talks rentals … Wild talk … Smyth and Ruutu off market
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 15th, 2012
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Wild haven’t asked Marek Zidlicky to waive his no-trade clause yet for New Jersey. He may not be traded until the summer says one source. Michael Russo via twitter: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher: “I haven’t made the decision to trade him for now for sure. … Different scenarios I’m contemplating”
- Eric Erlendsson via twitter: A goalie and defense won’t help the Lightning get into the playoffs this year. They will be sellers and look to fill those positions in the summer.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers have made it no secret that they are looking a defenseman, but who isn’t. Holmgren will be cautious with rentals.
“I don’t think that means we’re not looking around to try to improve ourselves,” Holmgren said. “I think you weigh what the cost is. I don’t really have any trouble making a deal that makes sense now and for the future. With those rental deals, you have to weigh the costs and make a call.
“If we have opportunities to improve our hockey club, we’ll need to think seriously about that. Everyone is trying to load up.”
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs prospect Joe Colborne doens’t want to be trade-bait.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Wild have held preliminary talks with pending UFA Kyle Brodziak. The Wild are also interested in extending defenseman Clayton Stoner. If the Wild become sellers, they may look to deal Greg Zanon, Mike Lundin and Josh Harding.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: You can take Ryan Smyth off the trade market. The Red Wings, Bruins and Rangers were interested. LeBrun says you can offically take Tuomo Ruutu’s name off the trade market. Rutherford wants to re-sign him, and now he’ll be out for 3-4 weeks. A Hurricanes source said last night that Ruutu wouldn’t be going anywhere. Contract extension talks continue.
- George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: The Flames could use a #1 center like Jeff Carter, but Johnson doesn’t think there a fit. They could use a playmaking center instead of shooting center. Carter deal also expires when he’s 37, with a yearly cap hit of $5.27 million.
- Bill Watters via twitter: The Blue Jackets – Maple Leafs rumor mentioned a while ago (Watters mentioned Nash to Leafs) appears to be the Blue Jackets request and not a Maple Leafs offer.
Blue Jackets reportedly put Rick Nash on the trade market
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on February 14th, 2012
Feb. 14th 6:30 PM:
- Spector Hockey via twitter: Dreger lists the Rangers, Flyers, Kings possibly on Nash’s list. LeBrun believes the Leafs are on it, though they may be concerned about giving up too many assets. Bob McKenzie believes there are 5 teams on Nash’s list. LeBrun adds the Canucks could be on it.
- Spector Hockey via twitter: The Kings seem like a plausible destination for Nash, but maybe not at the deadline.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Garrioch thinks the Rangers, Flyers, Sabres and Sharks could be interested in Nash.
4:45 PM:
- Helene Elliott via twitter: A Kings source says there is no truth to the recent rumor that Nash is going to the Kings. (Rumored deal was Nash to Kings for Bernier, Penner, Hunter and a pick)
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson was given a list of teams that Rick Nash would waive his no movement clause for. Believed to be a short list.
- @b1rky via twitter: Pierre LeBrun said on TSN1050 that the Canucks and Kings have both talked to the Blue Jackets.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers have had preliminary discussions with the Blue Jackets about Nash. The asking price is in excess of a speculated package including Bandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider and a 1st round pick. GM Scott Howson scouted the Rangers-Flyers game on Saturday.
- Katie Strang via ESPN: Strang also notes a package could include Dubinsky, Kreider and a 1st, if not more. The Rangers also have Tim Erixon, J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and Dylan McIlrath.
12:45 PM:
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Rick Nash: “I’ve played my whole career here so it’s a special place to me. As of right now I’m a Blue Jacket.”
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: “History shows when dealing a star, team rarely gets equal value. Smart team empties vault for Rick Nash.”
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: 2 GMs inquired about Nash on Friday and were given a firm ‘No.’ Something changed quickly. This doesn’t mean Scott Howson will trade Nash at by the deadline, but he’ll definitely be listening to offers. LeBrun think Nash’s camp may have went to Howson and said he’d be open to moving. Burnside notes that the Kings, Rangers and Maple Leafs would be interested. The Blue Jackets may want a 1st round pick, a couple NHL ready prospects, maybe a young roster player. Howson will ask the moon. LeBrun notes the Kings, Rangers and Flyers would make sense. The Rangers have a nice piece in Chris Kreider. The Flyers have the Brayden Schenn, James van Riemsdyk or Sean Couturier. The Kings have Jonathan Bernier, forward Andrei Loktionov or Dmen Slava Voynov and Jack Johnson. The Canucks could be in the mix with Cory Schneider. Possibly the Sharks could be interested. The Leafs would for sure would be calling. One team executive said this morning, “My sense is that this will still wait until the summer, but it’s not totally impossible to get it done before the deadline.”
- Bob McKenzie of TSN: McKenzie writes, “Last week, in no uncertain terms, NHL teams were told Nash was not available and this week, he is. For the right team, anyway.” This doesn’t mean he’ll be traded. None of this trade talk would be going on without having Nash’s consent. Nash likely has a limited number of teams he’d consider moving to. Half the league would likely be interested in him, but maybe only a handful of teams that would interest him. Nash is in control with his no-movement clause.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Blue Jackets would insist on young roster players in any Nash deal. The location would be determined by Nash.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: The Lightning won’t make a play for Nash.
- Shelly Anderson via twitter: Anderson doubts any Jordan Staal for Nash rumors. Nash make twice as much as Staal.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: For the Rangers to acquire Nash, it’s unknown if he’d waive his no-movement clause to go to New York.
- Steve Simmons via twitter: Simmons wonders why Blue Jackets would let the likely to be fired GM Scott Howson trade their best asset.
10:20 AM:
- Darren Dreger via twitter: “Harder we dig, the more info that is beginning to surface re: Nash availability.” Sources are saying that the Jackets are open to do anything to help their team long-term.
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: Columbus holds all the cards on a Rick Nash deal. It’s up to GM Scott Howson to “hit it out of the park” if he trades him.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: Rick Nash is not even a possibility for the Blackhawks.
- Dan Rosen via twitter: Rosen can’t believe a Nash deal will happen. The team needs changes but not Nash. Not good for Blue Jackets fans if he’s traded.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Because of salary cap reasons, Pagnotta doesn’t see Nash being dealt to the Rangers.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: 3 goalies the Blue Jackets to target in a Nash deal are: Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier and Tuukka Rask. Dupont thinks it would be fun for Nash to be with the Rangers or Maple Leafs, but they don’t really have the goalie piece for Columbus. Maybe a 3 team deal.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: Dupont can see a Blue Jackets-Flyers-Maple Leafs deal. The Leafs get Nash. The Blue Jackets get Sergei Bobrovsky. The Blue Jackets and Flyers share some Leafs players.
Feb. 13th 10:24 PM:
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: 2 NHL sources told Lavoie that Blue Jackets winger Rick Nash is on the trade market. Nash has a no-movement clause.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: A Bruins offer for Nash would likely have to include Rask-Krejci or Rask-Lucic at core.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson through a spokesman declines to comment on the report that Rick Nash is on the trade block.
Nash has a salary cap hit of $7.8 million 2017-18. His yearly salary is $7.5 million this year, $7.6 million in 2012-13, $7.8 million in 2013-14, $7.9 million in 2014-15, $7.9 million in 2015-16, $8 million in 2016-17, and $8.2 million in 2017-18.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky could be moved within days.
