Anders Eriksson Acquired by New York Rangers
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Trades on March 3rd, 2010
“New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Anders Eriksson from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for goaltender Miika Wiikman and a seventh round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
The 35-year old Eriksson will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. He has three assists in 12 games with the Coyotes this season.” (Source:TSN)
This is a move that should push the Rangers deep into the playoffs…? In my opinion, they’d be better off with the 7th round pick.
Rangers Claim Alex Auld on Re-entry Waivers
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Rumors on February 27th, 2010
“The New York Rangers have claimed Alex Auld on re-entry waivers from the Dallas Stars.
Auld, 29, is 9-6-3 with a 3.00 goals against average and .894 save percentage in 21 appearances this season.
A free agent at season’s end, Auld is making $1-million this season, though the Rangers will only be responsible for half of his remaining salary this season, with the Stars picking up the other half. “(Source:TSN)
This move makes sense for the new York Rangers, Lundqvist can’t play every game.
Centre Nazem Kadri Will Make NHL Debut Tonight For Leafs
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Rumors on February 8th, 2010
“Centre Nazem Kadri will make his NHL debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight.
The 19-year-old was called up on an emergency basis as Christian Hanson and Fredrik Sjostrom will both be sitting out with the flu.
Kadri has 26 goals and 40 assists in 42 games with the OHL’s London Knights this season.
The London, Ontario native was drafted seventh overall by the Maple Leafs in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.” (Source:TSN)
It’s been an interesting week for the Toronto Maple Leafs and with Nazem Kadri making his NHL debut tonight, it’s going to get even more interesting with many in Leafs Nation holding their collective breath…
Kadri is the prized prospect in the Leafs system and as much as fans are anxious to see him with the big club, there’s a danger in putting 167 pound, 19 year old rookie on the ice with the big boys.
Kadri was pretty ordinary at the World Junior Championships and the impression many had was that he seemed dis-interested and somewhat undisciplined. That kind of play won’t be tolerated at the pro level, but it’s safe to say that his interest should be focused tonight.
I’m not suggesting that 1 game will set the tone for his entire career but there is comfort in ignorance regarding a players potential, and the days of romancing about the future of Nazem Kadri is coming to an abrupt end in Leaf land…

“While details are few, sources say the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of completing at least one trade today that will be viewed as a “major change.”
Specifics as to whether the deal will be for an upgrade in goal, or for offensive help, weren’t provided, however this deal and potentially others are very close to being completed.
When asked if these “major changes” were imminent, the source replied, “they should start happening today.”
Details to follow on TSN.ca”(Source: Darren Dreger of TSN)
Something has to give in the Big Smoke of Toronto, and according to Darren Dreger (who is a very reliable source for inside information) today is going to be very active, in fact “major changes” are imminent.
We’ll be covering this situation closely as the story breaks….
Evgeni Malkin out 2-3 weeks
“NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin will be lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins for two to three weeks because of a strained right shoulder.
Malkin had been attempting to play through the injury, but coach Dan Bylsma said the team decided to rest the centre. The Russian star would miss seven games if he is out two weeks and 10 games if he is out three.” (source-Slam!sports)
Malkin has been very durable, having played 254 consecutive regular season games prior to this injury. I’d bet on him being back in 2 weeks rather then three based on his history. You get the impression Geno doesn’t like sit out, he said quote “It’s early in the season. It’s fine,” Malkin said. “I feel good. It’s not a big problem.” Poolies are hoping he’s right.
Penguins center Evgeni Malkin will miss “a couple weeks” because of a strained right shoulder, coach Dan Bylsma announced after practice today at Mellon Arena.
Malkin is tied with Sidney Crosby for the team scoring lead with 14 points. Last season, he won the NHL regular-season and playoff scoring titles and was the playoff MVP as he helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup.

Leafs Make Changes
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 13th, 2009
Sources indicate that the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-called Tyler Bozak from the AHL Marlies and will have Viktor Strahlberg back from a concussion for tonights match-up against the Colorado Avalanche.
To make space on the roster it appears that Matt Stajan and Niklas Hagman will both be healthy scratches as the Maple Leafs look for their first win. After getting off to the worst start in franchise history, with 1 point in an overtime loss to Montreal to open the season, the Leafs are winless through 5 games.
It should be noted that Stajan and Hagman have combined for almost half of the teams scoring (3 and 2 respectively, for 5 out of the teams 12 goals) but it’s more then likely a move to send a message to the rest of the team to wake up defensively.
After an off-season spent bolstering the defense, the Leafs have been horrible defensively. At times looking like they’re short-handed while at full strength, playing a 5 man box in their own zone while leaving opposing forwards open to chip in rebounds in front of the net, or giving half efforts when attempting to block shots from the point.
Veterans like Stajan and Hagman are expected to lead by example, not just talk about “playing with desperation” and ” being accountable in our own zone” while being questioned by reporters.
Although it is only 5 games into the season what has most Leaf fans worried is the lack of willingness to compete being shown thus far. The pressure is only going to increase as the losses mount, and the players need to realize it’s up to them to right the ship. A leader needs to emerge and give this team an Identity, a Heart, a Soul…But who?
