Sens still trying to make a deal, tight against the cap … Boychuk out a month … Kovalchuk plays, scores only goal … plus more

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray hasn’t been able to find a trade partner yet in his attempt to shake up his team. They are tight against the salary cap, which could be marking it harder to pull off a deal. Capgeek is showing that they are only $75,000 under the cap. The Sens are trying to move Brian Lee  and his $875,000 salary since the summer, but he hasn’t played well. Teams are willing to take Nick Foligno or Erik Karlsson, but Murray isn’t interested in moving them. Filip Kuba should be practicing with the team early this week.
  • Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald: Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk will be out for about a month after a ‘slight’ fracture in his left forearm. It won’t require surgery. Boychuk took a slash from Brandon Dubinsky.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils rank last in scoring and in points, and have benched their $100 million man. Everson thinks they need to stop juggling their lines and let them find a way to work together. Kovalchuk scored the teams only goal last night after his one game banishment to the press box. Kovalchuk added this about his healthy scratch,”The coach decided to give me a little rest and that’s about it. That’s his decision. It’s going to stay between me and him. I’m just a player so I’m going to show up so I can play.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Other reactions about Kovalchuk’s first game back.“I’m hungry night when I’m playing because that’s my job and we’re all professionals,” Kovalchuk said. “We all have to realize when we step on the ice, you have to do your best.”“I thought Kovy was fine,” Maclean said. “He played hard, skated hard. He got a goal there and some other chances.” “He was playing with some energy,” Langenbrunner said. “He’s as frustrated as anybody with the way things have gone and he wants to do his part to get us going back in the right direction. He did that scoring a goal again. He has a knack for putting himself in those positions and it was a great pass by (Dainius Zubrus). We’re going to need more of that, just battle and get pucks to the net. That was all created by cycling pucks off the net.”
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: RW Aaron Asham will likely be healthy enough to go on Wednesday. LW Eric Tangardi doesn’t have to clear waivers so he could be sent down. Zbynek Michalek had a full practice yesterday. Dman Andrew Hutchinson could also be sent down, as the Pens have 8 defenseman practicing.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks winger Dan Sexton has a broken nose after taking a shot in the face from Ruslan Salei on Saturday night. It’s not known yet how long Sexton will be out. He could return to Anaheim today for further tests.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars are still unsure if Jamie Benn is better served as a winger or a centerman. The last 2 games he’s played on the wing with Steve Ott and Ton Wandell. Last year was the first year he’s ever played center. Marc Crawford said it’s a game-by-game decision on where he plays.

Foligno fined max … Green out with upper-body injury … Souray suits up for Bears tonight … Franzen has concussion?

  • Chris Botta via twitter: Nick Foligno was fined the max amount, $2,500 for his blind-side hit on Patrick Dwyer. Colin Campbell added that this was Foligno’s first offense.
  • Corey Masisak via twitter: According to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau on their goaltending situation, “Whoever is playing better, for the most part. If they’re both playing equal, they’ll split.”
  • Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: It appears the trade window for the Columbus Blue Jackets to acquire Sheldon Souray is practically closed. Souray would have to clear through re-entry waivers, and he wouldn’t likely make it though.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Johan Franzen said after the game last night that he suffered a concussion after being hit by Stars Dman Mark Fistric. Mike Babcock said he’ll wait to hear what the doctors say before labeling the injury.
  • Chris Botta of Fanhouse: Brad Richards has had some discussion with Stars management about his future with the team, but don’t expect a contract anytime soon. “It’s really out of my control,” Richards told NHL FanHouse. “There’s so much uncertainty right now. If you don’t know who you’re going to be playing for, there’s little point in worrying about it.”
  • Allen Panzeri via twitter: The Ottawa Senators won’t know how serious Pascal Leclaire’s injury is until early next week. Wayne Scanlan via twitter: Leclaire injured his groin on the first shot of the game, and won’t travel with the team to Montreal and Pittsburgh.

Senators looking ahead to Draft … Gonchar is key piece to Penguins off-season

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators are preparing for the NHL Draft and Bryan Murray has said, “Ideally, if we could get a skilled centre, that’d be great. If we can’t, then it’s the best player available.” The Sens are picking at #16, and feel there is a drop off after #20-21, according to their lists. They traded away the two 2nd round picks they had for Matt Cullen and Andy Sutton. The Sens contract talks with UFAs Volchenkov, Cullen, and Sutton haven’t progressed that much. Murray’s top priorities are to sign RFAs: Regin, Foligno and Campoli. They are close to signing their 2004 5th round selection, RWerRoman Wick of Switzerland.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: It’s more and more unlikely that Sergei Gonchar will not be back with the Penguins if he’s wanting $5 million or more. Despite Kris Letang’s solid play, and extension he signed during the season, the Pens may not see him as a replacement for the the #1 spot Gonchar occupied.  The Penguins need to find a stay-at-home defenseman that can be used to shut down their oppositions number one line. They also need to improve on the wings. The 32-year old Matt Cook is looking for a 3 year deal, which he might not get from Pittsburgh.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The 36-year old Sergei Gonchar is probably looking at his last NHL contract, and even though he loves playing in Pittsburgh, he knows he could have played his last game in Penguins jersey. “It’s not [just] about the length of it,” Gonchar said. “It’s going to be a little bit about everything. I want to be happy. This is a place I was happy the last five years … but at the same time you do have to work and both sides have to be fair. When I’m going to look at my contract, it’s the last one, so I’m going to weigh in everything.”
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Last night could have been the last game in Bruins jersey for 5 free agents: Steve Begin, Mark Recchi, Miroslav Satan, Shawn Thornton, and Trent Whitfield. The 42-year old Mark Recchi could be back if he decides not to retire.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Trivia question: Who’s Martin Brodeur backup? He’s a UFA and has been no indicaton if he’ll be back next, though Lou Lamoriello say he was happy with everything he did this past season, and his attitude. He’d love to re-sign with the Devils.. Answer, Yann Danis.

Coaches Safe in Atlanta for Now … Getzlaf and Selanne Day-to-Day … Hudler Back with Wings Next Year?

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Anaheim Ducks were hit with a couple injuries on Sunday, with the MRI’s done yesterday. Ryan Getzlaf has an inflamed left ankle (the same ankle that was hurt before the Olympics), but the MRI showed no additional damage. Teemu Selanne has a slightly sprained shoulder, and will be re-evaluated today. Both are listed as day-to-day.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Vivlamore interviews Thrashers GM, Don Waddell. When asked if there will a be a coaching change (John Anderson) before the end of the season, Waddell said no. The coaching situation will be re-evaluated after the season though. Waddell talked to Pavel Kubina and Colby Armstrong during Olympic break, both are upcoming UFA’s, and he plans to talk to them again in a month or so.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Ken Holland will once again try to convince Jiri Hudler to leave the KHL and come back to the Red Wings. Hudler has a 2 year, $5.75 million arbitration deal from last summer that he is bound too. His KHL deal was for 2 years, and between $3-5 million a season, tax free. With his KHL season done after a 1st round playoff exit, he’s not eligible to play for the Wings this year, but could suit up for them next season.
  • Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild are expected to sign UMass center, Casey Wellman this morning. The college free agent picked the Wild over 21 other teams. Wellman was 6th in goals this past season, scoring 23 times. He’ll be signing a 2 year deal worth $1.8 million. He’ll be in the lineup this year (ineligible for the playoffs).
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators could be welcoming back Nick Foligno and Chris Campoli to their lineup as soon as tonight against the Maple Leafs. If Foligno is able to go, Jesse Winchester will most likely be out. If Campoli plays, Brian Lee will most likely be the odd man out.
