- Darren Dreger via twitter: Marc Bergevin is expected to be named the Blackhawks assistant GM.

Sunday morning NHL Rumor Roundup with Hotstove and SourcesSay video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 14th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: “The level of talk has heated up quite a bit,” said a league executive. “I get the sense some teams are getting antsy.” Brian Burke is the most active. The San Jose Sharks would like to add a veteran blueliner and might be willing to deal D Niclas Wallin and D Kent Huskins. Teams may be reluctant to give up 2nd round picks this year as it’s looking like a deep draft. The Canucks could be looking to move a Dman with soon, possibily Christian Ehrhoff or Kevin Bieksa. The Devils are also looking for defensive help, “They look to me like a team with a bad defence, an aging goalie and a superstar (Ilya Kovalchuk) that’s having a hard time fitting in. That can be a bad recipe,” said a league executive. If the Panthers fall out of the playoffs they could look to trade goalie Tomas Vokoun and winger Chris Higgins. The Sharks could be interested in Vokoun. The Panthers are also trying to move Rostislav Olesz and his 3 remaining years and $3.125 million cap hit.The Lightning are looking for blueline help. The Penguins are looking for a top 6 forward, Bill Guerin doesn’t seem like a possibility at this time.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks have offered Christian Ehrhoff a contract, they counter offered, both sides are apart, and will table talks until later on in the season. Shea Weber’s side will talk with GM Poile this week when the Predators are in Toronto. Several teams have are talking to Miro Satan. Contract talks between Brent Seabrook and the Chicago Blackhawks haven’t taken place yet. Steve Yzerman has met with Steven Stamkos’s agent, they’ve begun contract extension talks, but it will take awhile. The Ottawa Senators and Chris Phillips’ side have had initial contract talks.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: 16 of the 20 Maple Leafs dressed last night were brought in by Brian Burke (Phaneuf and Armstrong not included). He’s done okay bringing in some better players like Kessel and Phaneuf, but the team still needs a Brian Skrudland/Doug Risebrough type center “who makes teams better without necessarily scoring goals.”
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove with Ron MacLean, Eric Francis, Mike Milbury & Pierre LeBrun
- John Shannon of Sportsnet (video) talks about Jeff Carter’s contract, Mark Cuban could be interested in buying the Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils might look to change coaches, Miro Satan has a list of 3 teams. Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mark Cuban said in an email he’d only be interested in the Stars as a minority partner, and “only to help him with control of the American Airlines Center.”
Drury out 4 weeks … A worthwhile risk for Jackets? Ilya to the right side … Lupul get clearance to skate
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 21st, 2010
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Chris Drury broke his left index finger blocking a shot yesterday and will be out 4 weeks. After starting camp centering Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov, Derek Stepan skated between Evgeny Grachev and Mats Zuccarello yesterday.
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: There is a deal that works for both the Oilers and Blue Jackets. Even though Sheldon Souray has missed 102 games in the past 2 seasons, and has a cap hit of $5.4 million the next 2 years, he may be worth the risk for the Blue Jackets. GM Scott Howson has declined to comment on the rumors, the same for Oilers GM Steve Tambellini. The Oilers could waive Souray on Saturday and hope someone claims him on re-entry waivers, but then they’d be on the hook for 1/2 his salary. Arace thinks Souray would be worth the risk for the Blue Jackets, and could arguably become the best defenseman they’ve ever had. Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Mike Commodore isn’t that bothered with all the trade talk, he’s been dealt before and has played with 6 organizations in 11 years. He’s been aware of Sheldon Souray rumor since June.
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Ilya Kovalchuk has moved over to right wing to start camp. Top line to start is Zach Parise, Travis Zajac and Kovalchuk, a solid 2nd line of Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott and Jamie Langenbrunner.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul received medical clearance to start skating after 10 months. Lupul suffered a blood infection stemming from back surgery last December. It will take him a couple months to get back into game shape. “It’s a starting point. I’ve been cleared to do a little more in the weight room and I can skate, albeit by myself. I’m not allowed to get out there with the guys. But just to get in the weight room and start bringing my strength back up and just being out there with the guys is a good thing. I’m going to be under a watchful eye.”
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: Cody Hodgson has been cleared for contact.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: New York Rangers GM Glen Sather says that John Tortorella is the right coach for the team. My question is … Is Sather the right GM for the team? As I’ve said before, I’m still surprised that he’s still there.
- George Malik via twitter: Kris Draper will head back to Detroit and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. Suffered a groin injury and is done for training camp.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks defenseman Niclas Wallin is battling an infection from a July surgery on his ankle that was cleaning out scare tissue. He’s been able to take part in scrimmages but only after the training staff cut a whole in his skate that allows him to get his foot in and out. He’s having Bauer create a custom boot for him.
Niclas Wallin Traded to San Jose
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on February 7th, 2010
In a strange turn of events, Niclas Wallin has agreed to waive his ‘no-trade’ clause for the San Jose Sharks. A couple days ago, Wallin wouldn’t waive the no-trade to go to San Jose.
The Carolina Hurricanes sent Wallin and a 2010 5th round pick to the San Jose Sharks for 2010 2nd round pick.
Wallin has played in 47 games this year, recording 5 assists, 26 penalty minutes and is a -5. In 517 career games, he’s recored 69 points and 391 penalty minutes.
The move gives the Sharks some added depth on their blueline.
Canucks and Blues talking Deal? Pony top Leaf? Bertuzzi staying in Detroit? Savard Back next week?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 22nd, 2010
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Sami Salo left last nights game with a lower-body injury (possibly groin). The Canucks are already without defencemen Kevin Bieksa and Willie Mitchell. This is a good lead in Jeff Gordon’s post below, and Matt Sekeres’.
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Canucks have been scouting some Blues games, GM Mike Gillis was at the Blues-Canadiens game Wednesday night. The Canucks have been rumored to be looking for some scoring depth and a Dman. Darryl Sydor was added to the Blues lineup for that game, and UFA Carlo Colaiacovo might draw some interest.
- Matt Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Canucks-Blues speculation. The Canucks signed David Backes to an offer sheet back in July 2008, 3 years, $7.5 million. Backes scored 30 goals last season, but is only at 10 so far this year. The Canucks are looking for a 3rd line center and Backes would be a nice addition. According to a Winnipeg Sun article, Blues president John Davidson scouted Vancouver’s AHL team. Canucks top goalie prospect, Cory Schneider would definitely be a player the Blues would have interest in.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leaf who might bring the most return back, not named Tomas Kaberle, might be Alexei Ponikarovsky.
“I think you might be able to get a late second-round pick for him,” one GM said. “He’s a big body guy who could go to the dirty areas in front of the net. He has some good hands too.
“I don’t think you would get much more than that. He’s not as refined as Antropov.” - Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Ray Whitney and Niclas Wallin have yet to waive their no-trade clause. I’m sure this will happen before the deadline. Untouchables for the Hurricanes: Eric Staal, Cam Ward, Brandon Sutter, Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings and Todd Bertuzzi may start talking contract extension. Both Bertuzzi and GM Ken Holland would like to get a deal done. The 35 year old Bertuzzi is making $1.5 million this year.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Bruins all-star center Marc Savard has skated the last 2 days, and is hoping to return next Friday against Buffalo. Savard has been out the last 2 weeks with a partially torn right MCL.
Around the Boards: Gonchar, Changes in Carolina Coming, Teams asking about Hagman
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on November 29th, 2009
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Contract talks between Sergei Gonchar and the Pittsburgh Penguins have been put on hold. Gonchar has a $5 million cap hit this year, but could probably get more as a UFA. The Pens would like to bring him back but it will need to be at a cap friendly, hometown discount number.
- Blues coach Andy Murray could be the first coach to be fired this season, and former Thrashers coach Bob Hartley could be his replacement.
- The Hurricanes could be looking to dump salaries, and players possibly on the move are Aaron Ward ($2.5 mill.), Joe Corvo ($2.75 mill.), Niclas Wallin ($1.725 mill.) and Ray Whitney.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Despite all the injuries, don’t expect the Red Wings to add any players. Niklas Kronwal, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams and Adreas Lilja are all out with injuries, but they’ll be too close to the salary cap ceiling to add anyone that has a mid to high cap number.
- Four teams have inquired about Niklas Hagman, with one of them being Anaheim. Burke doesn’t really want to move him unless he’s blown away. Hagman has nice cap number of $3 million for the next 2 seasons.
- With the lack of trade talk out there, with so many teams almost capped out, Brian Burke will most likely once again push the idea of ‘retaining salary in trades’ at the next GM meetings. Burke thinks this will create the opportunity for more trades, others think it will create ‘Dead Money’.
- The Oilers are deep on the blueline and have reportedly been shopping shopping struggling Tom Gilbert. Gilbert could be tough to move with a cap number of $4 million, and 4 years left (after this season).
- Hockey Night in Canada’s “Hotstove’ – Some of what LeBrun mentions in the above, is talked about on the Hotstove.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres Patrick Kaleta was suspended for 2 games for hit on Jared Ross.
