Injury notes involving Crosby, Chara, 5 Jets, Michalek, Staal, Stastny, Skinner, Nabokov and Hall
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on December 13th, 2011
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins center Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with recurring symptoms from his concussion. He started getting headaches again after taking an elbow to the head from Bruins forward David Krejci on Dec. 5th. “The next day, after the game, I didn’t feel right,” he said. Further tests showed no serious injury.
“Three or four months ago, I was concerned he might never come back to play because of how long it was taking him to recuperate,” said Dr. Jack Wilberger, chairman of the department of neurosurgery for West Penn Allegheny Health System. “My concerns are further heightened now.” (Wilberger is not on Crosby’s medical team)
Crosby is viewing this like the minor setback he experienced in August.
“It is concerning that he is having symptoms again, but there is a very real possibility that Crosby and those around him are simply being extremely cautious, which is the proper course to take,” Stuart said. “This does not mean his career is in jeopardy.”
- Josh Yohe via twitter: Penguins coach on Dan Bylsma: “It’s frustrating for Sid. Sid knows his body better than anyone else. He’s not feeling 100 percent. He’ll return when he is 100.”
- Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer was told by a couple people that Crosby is also having left knee trouble.
- Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston: Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara didn’t practice yesterday and is day-to-day. “There’s no time frame when I’m going to be back, but most likely I won’t be playing tomorrow,” Chara said. “Honestly, it’s in a stage where we can’t talk about anything more than 24 hours ahead.
- Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun: Dustin Byfuglien (leg), Ron Hainsey (ankle), Nik Antropov (foot) and Eric Fehr (shoulder) are all questionable for tonight’s game. Defenseman Tobias Enstrom practiced with contact for the 1st time since breaking his collarbone, but he won’t play tonight.
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek and Brian Strait returned to practice yesterday but won’t be ready for game action this week. Center Jordan Staal is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and it’s not known if he’ll be able to go tonight.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Avalanche center Paul Stastny practiced yesterday and will play tonight.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller on forward Jeff Skinner: “As of right now I don’t think we’re going to have him.”
- NY Islanders via twitter: Evgeni Nabokov has been activated from the IR.
- Edmonton Oilers via twitter: Oilers forward Taylor Hall has been cleared for contact.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on December 9th, 2011
- Grant Robertson and Tara Perkins of the Globe and Mail: Rogers Communications and BCE are closing in a deal to by the 80% stock in MLSE from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan for $1.33 billion. Larry Tanenbaum supports the deal, which is necessary as he has the right to refuse any offer.

- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets forward Evander Kane is on roll, scoring 9 goals in his last 10 games (14 total in 26 games). He’s also in a contract year.
“In the back of your mind, you’re aware of those things and you have to be aware of what your situation is personally,” said Kane. “I know this is my last year (of his current) contract and you want to have a big year and show what you can do at this level and prove your worth.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Nik Antropov could be back in the Jets lineup tonight after missing the last 3 games. He’ll see how he feels at the morning skate. Chris Mason will start in net for the Jets against the Hurricanes.
- Neate Sager via twitter: The Ducks will loan Devante Smith-Pelly, and the Lightning will loan Brett Connolly to Team Canada for the World Junior Championships.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Tyler Seguin, Jeff Skinner, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan Johansen and Sean Couturier will not be released by their teams for the World Juniors.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Panthers are worried that if they loan Erik Gudbranson to Team Canada they won’t have a replacement in the AHL if one of their Dmen suffers an injury.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Devils defenseman Andy Greene will miss 4 weeks with a fractured toe.
- Helene St. James via twitter: Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk was pulled from last night’s game as a precaution, and coach Mike Babcock doesn’t expect him to miss any games.
Injury notes on Enstrom, Jones, Antropov, Jokinen, Alfredsson, Staal, Lovejoy and Ott
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 4th, 2011
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom suffered a broken collar bone and will be out indefinitely. Enstrom was injured on Monday after taking a hit from Panthers Jack Skille.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Randy Jones left last night’s game in the 3rd period after blocking a shot off inside of his right ankle. Forward Nik Antropov blocked a shot with his hand, he did return to the game, but his status for Saturday is not 100%.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen was originally thought to be out 3 to 4 weeks, but that may not be the case according to Paul Maurice. Jokinen had 2 MRIs on Wednessday night and revealed that the injury was not as serious as originally thought. Maurice said it’s closer to day-to-day than week-to-week.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson has been out with a concussion since last Saturday, and has no idea when he may return.
“If I’m at home with the kids, I get a little light-headed and I have to sit down for a little bit, and then I feel good again,” Alfredsson said Thursday, speaking publicly for the first time since the hit. “Until that’s gone, I’m not going to do anything physical.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers are getting close to putting defenseman Marc Staal on LTIR, saving them $3.975 million in cap space. Once he’s put on it, the Rangers could recall Mats Zuccarello from the AHL. Wojtek Wolski suffered a groin injury last night.
- Josh Yohe via twitter: Penguins Ben Lovejoy broke his wrist and is out indefinitely.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars forward Steve Ott has a hip pointer and could miss the next 2 games.
Rumor notes from LeBrun and Garrioch
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on March 6th, 2011
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: No exact time frame is set for Tomas Kaberle and the Bruins to talk contract, but they did talk to say that they will discuss in the future. Yzerman and Stamkos’s agent talked last weekend, doesn’t sound like they are close yet. The Maple Leafs and James Reimer will talk after the season, he’s a RFA. The Senators and Craig Anderson are expected to hold contract talks in the next couple weeks. In 2016-17 the Maple Leafs organization will be 100 years old. They’d possibly like to hold the All-Star game, NHL draft and an outdoor game at BMO field.
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The New York Rangers were the only team that Brad Richards was willing to waive his no-trade clause for at the deadline last week, but the 2 sides couldn’t get a deal done. The Stars and Richards couldn’t work out the length of a possible extension, and never really got around to discussing money. Richards’ agent could have been looking for a deal in the 7-10 year range. If he is looking for a deal in that length, don’t expect it to come from the Maple Leafs on July 1st as Burke doesn’t hand out contracts that long. Ilya Bryzgalov (Phoenix), Tomas Vokoun (Florida) and Craig Anderson (Ottawa) are the top free agent goalies this year, and all are hoping to sign an extension with their current team. Anderson could be signing a 3 year, $3.5 million deal with the Senators. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson’s job could be in question after another season of not making the playoffs. Senators coach Cory Clouston likely won’t be coaching the Senators next season. The Rangers did look at adding Filip Kuba at the deadline but didn’t like the fact that he had another year on his contract, which is why the went with McCabe. Peter DeBoer likely won’t be behind the bench in Florida next season. Nik Antropov gave a 5 team list to GM Rick Dudley before the deadline but couldn’t get anything done. Antropov has 2 more years $4.062 million cap hit. Pascal Leclaire’s career could be over.

Sunday morning Rumor roundup part one
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on February 6th, 2011
- Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: There are rumors that the NHL is looking into buying the Atlanta Thrashers and moving them to Winnipeg. They would raise $160 million, putting $35 million towards running the team, and offer $125 million to buy the team. It’s not know how far this idea has gone, or if it’s just in the tire kicking stages.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat, and possibly the same for Darcy Regier if the new owner wants to start fresh.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Bruins should announce this week if Marc Savard is shut down for the season or not. The Bruins could be looking for forward help and Jackets, Senators, Oilers and Panthers have forwards available for trade. With Evgeni Malkin done for the year it’s likely the Penguins will look at add some scoring. The Thrashers are looking to move Nik Antropov, Ron Hainsey and Freddy Modin. The only way Florida brings back Tomas Vokoun is if it’s on a 1 year deal. The Predators, Kings, and Lightning are looking at Mike Fisher, but the Senators are unlikely to move him. The Sens are looking for 2 top prospects and a high pick. The Canadiens, Sharks, Bruins and Capitals could be interested in Chris Phillips.
- David Kalan of NHL.com: What might the Penguins do with Malkin now done. Jason Arnott might be of interest to the Penguins. The Pens will be able to bring in $8.1 million in salary cap at the deadline. The Pens now have the salary space to add an Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner, and if shooting for the moon, Jarome Iginla. Malkin’s number comes back on the books next year, so bringing in some help that is under contract next year could be difficult to do.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he won’t discuss contract extensions with any of his 5 UFA’s, so they may become trade bait. Jan Hejda, Mathieu Garon, Ethan Moreau and Chris Clark and Andrew Murray will all be UFAs. Mike Commodore could be bought out in the summer if they can’t find a team to take him.
- Can’t find embed code for last night’s Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove yet, but here is a link to it.
- NHL Sources Say: The Hockeycentral panel discuss what the Penguins might do to replace Evgeni Malkin (Alex Kovalev an option) as well as a potential trade between Edmonton and Ottawa (Penner and Phillips as key pieces of the deal). Yzerman may be looking to improve along the blueline, possibly Beachemin and Phillips. Senators are looking for a goaltender.
Blues need to make some changes … Liberal’s may support new arena in Quebec City … Thrashers willing to trade … Semin wanted short deal
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 28th, 2011
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Gordon thinks the Blues need to change something, and to do it quickly. Injuries have taken their toll, and have even hit their draft picks. The team needs to trade some of their defensive surplus for offensive help, and this should include everyone including Erik Johnson. A Johnson deal would have to be for a “young, cornerstone-caliber forward.” The Blues also need to spend some money this off-season and bring in some offensive help via free agency.
- Montreal Gazette: Canadian Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff would support idea of using federal funds to help build the proposed 18,000 seat arena in Quebec City. Quebec City’s mayor has been trying to get the federal government to match the provincial government’s $175 million. Quebec City would put in $50 million. Estimated cost of the arena is $400 million.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: So Alexander Semin signed a 1 year, $6.7 million deal yesterday. The Capitals were willing to do a longer deal, but Semin wanted to do a shorter one. “He was basically comfortable with another one-year deal,” McPhee said. “That was fine with us.” One reason he may have been interested in a shorter deal is the uncertainty surrounding the CBA that expires after the 2011-12 season. Semin agent, Mark Gandler added, “Last time, they cut existing contracts 24 percent. … I’m worried about the sanctity of the contract.”
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Atlanta Thrasher might be willing to trade Nik Antropov, Freddy Modin and Ron Hainsey.
- Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: It’s unlikely that anyone will claim Ales Kotalik off waivers as he’s in the 2nd year of a 3 year deal and is making $3 million. If he goes unclaimed, it doesn’t mean he’ll be sent to the AHL. He has 3 points, is a -8 in 20 games for the Flames.
Toews back tonight? Oshie in first full practice … Antropov activated … Prospal has setback … Blake injures shoulder

- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Though at first expected to miss 2 weeks, Jonathan Toews could be back tonight, less than a week after injuring his shoulder.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers activated Nik Antropov from the IR after missing 5 games with a lower body injury. Tim Stapleton was assigned to the AHL. Jim Slater suffered a concussion on Friday. Zach Bogosian returned after missing Friday’s game with a knee injury.
- Andy Strictland of True Hockey: T.J. Oshie took part in his first full practice yesterday, but was wearing a no-contact jersey. The Blues are giving themselves a cushion by saying the All-Star break as timetable for a possible return. Andy McDonald has shown some progress but isn’t skating yet.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Rangers forward Vinny Prospal suffered a setback. When Tortorella was asked if he’ll play this year, “We’ll see how it plays out.”
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks winger Jason Blake suffered a knee injury on a Jordan Hendry a hit, though it may not be serious. Carlyle later corrected his postgame scrum mistake by saying Blake’s injury was his shoulder, but still not expected to be serious.
Rypien suspended indefinitely, hearing Friday … Green still out … Richards off top PP unit … Burke and Lamoriello audio
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 20th, 2010
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Canucks Rick Rypien has been suspended by the NHL, pending a hearing. Pierre LeBrun, hearing is ‘in-person’, which is required under the CBA to suspend a player for 5 games or more, but doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll get 5 games or more.Dreger says it’s likely that Rypien’s hearing will be on Friday. ESPN posts an article on other instances where NHL players and fans have been involved.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green will not play Thursday against the Boston Bruins.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Mike Richards has been replaced on the top power play unit during practice. Top unit Jeff Carter, Scott Hartnell, Daniel Briere , Kimmo Timonen & Chris Pronger.
- John Buccigross of ESPN: If the Dallas Stars decide to trade Brad Richards, Buccigross thinks they could get a 1st round pick, a prospect and a roster player for him. He also thinks the Leafs, Kings and Rangers would be interested, and could offer him right away a 5 to 7 year deal worth $30-40 million. The Blues might be a good fit for Richards.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Nashville Predators signed Steve Begin this morning and put him on waivers. Jamie Lundmark cleared waivers. If a team signs a UFA after the opening day rosters are set, that player must clear waivers. Update: Begin put on waivers for the purpose of being sent to AHL as a depth guy
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers forward Nik Antropov is still not a 100% from off-season hip surgery. He’s struggled out of the gate with 1 assist in 5 games so far. Coach Craig Ramsey has tried to limit his minutes (averaging 13:31 per game) and could sit him out for a time, they are going game-by-game with him.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Lines at the Edmonton Oilers practice today: Penner/Gagner/Hemsky, Paajarvi/Horcoff/Eberle & Hall/Cogliano/Brule.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Josh Bailey and Trent Hunter are both hopeful of playing tomorrow night against the Lightning.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: It’s looking more and more like Bill Guerin will be retiring from the NHL. No announcement has been made, but one could be coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
- Andy Stickland of True Hockey: The St. Louis Blues and David Backes have had some talks regarding a contract extension.
- Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke was on the Andrew Krystal show this morning talking about the Maple Leafs and answering some fan questions.
- Fan 590 Audio: Lou Lamoriello on Prime Time Sports yesterday with Bob McCown talking about roster concerns and the current salary cap system.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Dan Ellis will start for the Lightning tomorrow night.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Jordan Staal practiced for the 2nd straight day. He feels he’s ready and could travel with the team on the upcoming road trip. Brooks Oprik could return against St. Louis.
Sharks name captain, alternates, and top 3 lines … Thrashers name alternates, #1 goalie? … No Souray talks with Flames?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 7th, 2010
Jeff Marek via twitter: Joe Thornton was named the captain of the San Jose Sharks. From the Sharks twitter account, Dan Boyle will be a full-time alternate captain, Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe will be the others, one at home, one on the road.
Jimmy Murphy via twitter: The Boston Bruins and Brian McGrattan have a agreed on a 2-way deal, but it won’t be announced till Monday.
David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Current (yesterday report) top 3 lines for the Sharks to start the season. Marleau – Couture – Heatley, McGinn – Thornton – Setoguchi, Clowe – Pavelski – Mitchell.
Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers will start the season without a captain, choosing to go with 3 alternates, Nik Antropov, Andrew Ladd and Johnny Oduya. They will rotate some others in throughout the season. The Thrashers also haven’t named a starting goalie for Friday’s season opener, but Ramsey offered this …
“I think one of the goalies will play more,” Ramsay said. “That would not be unreasonable. I’ve been with teams that have been 50-50 [splits], and we won a Vezina [Trophy] with it. I don’t think that really works. It can. I’ve seen it. We definitely are going to play each night with a plan in our minds of making this young player be a star. I think he can be.
“I don’t look that far ahead. Whatever happens we will deal with it. You make too many plans in this game, and suddenly you lose three guys and everything is blown out the door and you have to start again.”
Greg Brady via twitter: Kirk Maltby is leaning to playing in the AHL, no truth to him being offered scouting position with the Red Wings.
Darren Dreger via twitter: Dreger was told that the Flames have not talked to the Oilers about either Sheldon Souray or Andrew Cogliano. Dan Tencer has heard different.
Darren Dreger via twitter: Budget constraints kept the Florida Panthers from giving Erik Gudbranson the bonuses he wanted on his entry level deal. He made the team but they couldn’t get a contract done in time.
Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: A good read if you can handle more on Ilya Kovalchuk titled “A small part of the story behind the Ilya Kovalchuk contract saga”
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Kris Versteeg on the ‘crazy’ atmosphere that surrounds the Maple Leafs.

- If The Globe and Mail isn`t on your daily list of sites to read, you should add it. Aside from excellent hockey coverage, they also have a weekly podcast, done every Thursday I think. Here is yesterday`s podcast.
- James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail: Ron Wilson has his fingers crossed that Jonas Gustavsson can go Saturday against the Canucks, but Monday against Anaheim is more likely. Struggling blueliner, Luke Schenn, found himself without a defensive partner at practice. Could he be the odd man out on Saturday?
- Kevin Dupont of the Boston Globe: It doesn`t look like Brendan Shanahan is on the Boston Bruins radar to fill the roster spot, though 1 team is apparently considering him. But Shanahan agent, Rick Curran said “You know, roster limits, salary-cap restrictions. It’s just a matter of remaining patient and ready.’’
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers have juggled their top 2 lines with Bryan Little joining Todd White and Slava Kozlov. Their 1st line now consists of Ilya Kovalchuk, Nik Antropov and Max Afinogenov.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Ryan Kesler is in the final year of his contract, earning $1.75 million this year, and is looking for a contract extension, and potentially a lot more money. Kesler`s agent has already met with Canucks management on several occassions.
- Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register: Anaheim Ducks forward, Evgeny Artyukhin, was suspended for 3 games for slew footing Dallas Stars defenceman, Matt Niskanen in Wednesday nights game. This is Artyukhin`s 3rd time being suspended. Nishanen left the game, and did not play last night.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook, both injured on Wednesday, did not practice yesterday. Coach Joel Quenneville said both are progressing and could play Saturday.
