- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis laughs at the rumor that Daniel Alfredsson could interest the Flames at some point. The Flames do have an interest in Coyotes holdout Kyle Turris. A source close to the situation has said that the Flames are one of six teams to make a ‘significant’ offer. Coyotes GM Don Maloney is still saying he doesn’t have plans to trade him. Rene Bourque is also front and center in trade rumors lately. Flames GM Jay Feaster continues to tell other GMs that Mark Giordano is not available. Francis doesn’t see the Flames trading Jarome Iginla. Ollie Jokinen wants to re-sign with the Flames. Tim Jackman and Tom Kostopoulos are UFAs and could draw minor interest at some point. David Moss won’t be traded unless he wants out. They would love to move Matt Stajan and his $3.5 million salary in a package, but it’s unlikely that there is anyone else on their roster to draw that much interest.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Blue Jackets are having issues on and off the ice. There are reports that they are losing $25 million a season, and there is talk about the long-term survival of the franchise. Their last few home games have only drawn 9,000 fans.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Two high profile GMs have said they’d like to see more players starting next season.
“Visors should be mandatory for all defencemen, at the least,” Burke said, adding that blueliners are at “a far greater risk” of being hit in the face by a puck because of all the deflections in front of the net.
“I’d want to hear the GMs out on the larger topic [of everyone having to wear them], but I think I would support Homer.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets won’t be pulling off any blockbuster deals because the team is off to a slow start. They may pull off some smaller deals along the way, but finding a trade partner who isn’t trying to fleece is hard to find. Most teams aren’t looking to get rid of 30 goal scorers and many teams would like to upgrade their blueline.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was wearing a no-contact jersey again at practice yesterday. When asked yesterday when Doughty will see the doctor next, Murray said, “The opportunity will probably be tonight, to see the doctor at the rink. We plan on taking him with us on the road trip, kind of shooting for the end of the week here as a possibility.”
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman confirmed that they will be keeping Brett Connolly and won’t be sending him back to junior.
- Shaun Starr via twitter: Canadiens Max Pacioretty has a partially torn ligament in his wrist. Starr has been told surgery is unlikely. Renaud Lavoie via twitter: It’s a partial tear, no breaks, deep bruise. He could be back in the lineup this week.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers coach Tom Renny says that Ryan Whitney has a sprained knee but it’s not significant. A few days and he should be fine.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild forward Guilaume Latendresse is bothered by a wonky groin again, and look for the Wild to be cautious with him. Dany Heatley and Greg Zanon are also bothered by groin issues. Brett Bulmer will play in his 9th game on Thursday and likely won’t be returned to junior.
- Luke DeCock via twitter: Scouts in Carolina last night were the Blue Jackets, Flyers and Penguins. The Canes play the Flyers and Pens in the next 3 weeks. They don’t play the Blue Jackets.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: 2 league sources are saying that the Flames GM Jay Feaster is desperately trying to move contracts off their books. The Flames may be shopping Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and David Moss, but it may be tough finding someone wanting those contract. Stajan has 3 years left on his 4 year, $14 million deal. Ollie Jokinen, Hagman and Moss could be deadline rentals. Despite having the 5th highest payroll, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat. A league executive, “There’s actually a lot of teams talking for this time of year. I don’t think you’re going to see anything shake down until the end of the month.” Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is checking out interest in Carl Gunnarson and Tyler Bozak. The Leafs would like to make room for defenseman Keith Aulie and they don’t plan on sending Jake Gardiner to the minors. Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been working the phones looking to move a defenseman, possibly Keith Ballard, and not goalie. One league executive hasn’t heard Kyle Turris’ name mentioned in trade talks.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks winger Jason Blake could be out 3 months after suffering a lacerated tendon just above his wrist. He will have surgery on Monday.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will be out 7 to 10 days with an upper-body injury. Kings GM Dean Lombardi said it didn’t involve Doughty’s head.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: The Lightning will have to decide soon if they want to burn a contract year with 2010 1st round pick Brentt Connolly. Connolly has played in 5 games so far, they play their 10th game on Oct. 27th.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson would like to see the NHL entry draft switch the drafting age from 18 to 19, “For the most part, 18- and 19-year-old players are not close to being ready for the NHL. If the draft goes back a year, it slows down the process at every level. Right now, everyone is on a treadmill to get there.” Only 6% of 18 year olds play in the NHL the year they are draft.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller is listed as day-to-day and is skating, but the Avs have contected a concussion expert who has dealt with Mueller in the past.
- John Shannon via twitter: Oilers Ales Hemsky will be out 3 to 4 weeks with a strained shoulder.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: The Blues will update Andy McDonald’s status on Monday. Andy Strickland via twitter: Initially prognosis doesn’t look great and Stickland wouldn’t be shocked if he’s put on the IR.
Devils still after Kovalchuk … Cogliano available from the Oilers

- Mark Everson of the NY Post: New Jersey Devils GM Ilya Kovalchuk still hasn’t given up on re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk. It’s rumored that the Devils were willing to offer $8 million a season.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are obviously lacking down the middle, Tyler Bozak is their top centerman, followed by Mikhail Grabovski, maybe Nazem Kadri or Christian Hanson or John Mitchell. They didn’t have any interested Matthew Lombardi (3 years, $10.5 million from Nashville). The free agent market for centermen isn’t very encouraging either. Good Simmons line: “Never mind Darryl Sutter losing his senses and signing Olli Jokinen. But giving him a no-trade deal? Who does he think he is, John Ferguson Jr.?” Simmons is surprised that Panthers GM Dale Tallon hasn’t offered Niklas Hjalmersson an offer sheet. Chris Mason is this years Dominic Moore. Mason turned down 3 years and $11 million during the season from the Blues, he signed with the Thrashers for 2 years and $3.7 million.
- Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers will not re-sign Ryan Potulny, Marc Pouliot, Fernando Pisani, and their isn’t much room for Mike Comrie. Andrew Cogliano is prime candidate to be traded. Sheldon Souray cleared waivers, and if they can’t move him, don’t expect him to be at training camp. They most likely won’t put him through re-entry waivers, or bury him in the minors. A trade seems to be the only option.
Flyers interested in Bobby Ryan … Leafs looking for a defenseman

- Jimmy Murphy via Twitter: “Nonsense” Kings source on the Kings trading for Marc Savard so they can sign Kovalchuk.
- Tim Panaccio via Twitter: Rumors that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to clear salary cap room not for a goalie, but for Bobby Ryan.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to add a free agent defenseman. It’s not known at the moment who they’re interested in. If Burke wants size there’s Andy Sutton and Willie Mitchell. If it’s skill and powerplay help maybe Marc-Andre Bergeron. Shot blocking could be Jay McKee. Savy could be Shaone Morrisonn, Freddy Meyer, Mike Mottau, Mike Weaver. If a team interested in acquiring Kaberle offered him an extension, they may be more likely to meet the Leafs asking price. Now that most of big name free agents have signed, things may pick up on Kaberle.
- Mark Spector from Sportsnet.ca: Kevin Bieksa has fallen out of Canucks coach Alain Vigneault good books, and that is why he is on the trading block and not Christian Ehrhoff and Sami Salo, who both are also making $3 million plus and in the last year of their contract. Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow’s neck injury has not responded well, and is not as far along in the rehab as they had hoped. Could one of the reasons they brought Ollie Jokinen back (I still laugh everytime I read/write that Sutter signed Jokinen).

For some strange reason that is beyond me (and umpteen thousand people around the world) the Calgary Flames have re-signed Ollie Jokinen for 2 years, $6 million.
The Flames sent Jokinen to the Rangers at the trade deadline for Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins.
I honestly don’t know what to say about this. I have no idea what Sutter was thinking. Check out some of Sutter’s fan mail on twitter, he’s taking a beating on twitter.
Bruins trading for the 4th overall pick? Weiss not getting traded?

- Brandon Worley of the NBCsports.com: I’m shaking my ahead over this one, as there seems to be many holes. According to Worley’s ‘reliable source’, the Boston Bruins would send Marc Savard, RFA Blake Wheeler, and the 15th overall pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 4th overall pick. Oh yeah, Savard also has a no-trade clause. It isn’t for certain that the Bruins are offering the 15th pick.
- Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel: The Florida Panthers have talked to Oilers and Bruins about moving up in the draft with no luck. Teams have also been calling them about their 3rd overall pick. They are still unsure of who’d they take if they keep the pick. The Panthers may not be looking to trade Stephen Weiss, if they did, their number one center would be Steven Reinprecht followed by Shawn Matthias. Weiss also makes a reasonable $3.1 million.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens GM Gauthier conceded that part of the decision to trade Halak was for salary cap reason. What was Halak looking to sign for? Gauthier doesn’t know as the 2 sides never talked.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks if the Penguins would consider trading the rights to Sergei Gonchar before July 1st. Molinari writes that Shero probably wouldn’t do that until he was completely convinced that he couldn’t re-sign Gonchar.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: It doesn’t appear that Matt Cooke and the Pittsburgh Penguins are close to coming to a deal. Talks between Andy Sutton and the Ottawa Senators are moving along slowly as the team attempts to keep Anton Volchekov in town. Things are slow for Matt Cullen as well. The New York Rangers have not talked to Ollie Jokinen at all. Jokinen wants to stay in the NHL and not go to the KHL.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Scott Niedermayer’s agent has said “It’s probably Anaheim or nothing”.
- Chraig Custance of the Sporting News: So it appears that UFA Chris Mason is done in St. Louis with the Halak deal. Mason’s agent offers up teams that could be looking for a starting goalie … “There could be surprises,” he said. “With Steve Yzerman going into Tampa, does he think he needs to make a change there? San Jose, do they make a change? What does Philadelphia do? It could be there are no jobs and there could be five jobs.”
- Elliotte Freidman via Twitter: Nothing new on the New Jersey Devils-Paul Martin talks.
- Michael Russo Star Tribune: Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher thinks the team will try and go the trade route to improve his team rather than go the free agent route as it isn’t the greatest. The Wild are looking for top-6 forward, mainly a #2 center. They have some depth on the blueline that they might be able to use to acquire a forward. Brent Burns and goalie Josh Harding, as well as their 1st round pick could all be in play.
Flames-Rangers trade goes through after the Flames game

It’s official now, the Calgary Flames have acquired forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins from the New York Rangers for forwards Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust. The trade was officially announced after the Flames game was over last night.
”Definitely, it’s a slap in the face to get traded,” Jokinen said as he left Pengrowth Saddledome. ”It was a long day. We heard everything (Sunday) night, I was kind of surprised. I wasn’t expecting to get moved, but it’s part of the business and I’ve got to move on.”
In an effort to shake up their team, the Flames have now acquired 5 forwards and 1 defenseman in the last couple days. They shipped out 3 forwards and 1 defenseman.
