Another interested party for Stars … Pacioretty cleared for contact … Canucks top 6 options and Schneider … Foster out 2-4 weeks … Doughty practicing video

  • Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News: Chuck Greenberg is interested in buying the Dallas Stars, and he would have 30 days to submit an offer. Tom Gaglardi has already submitted a bid of $267 million to buy the team. Greenberg has been studying the team for months, and has already been approved by the NHL as a bidder for the team. Greenberg was a part owner of the Texas Rangers along with Nolan Ryan, but he sold his share and stepped down as CEO in March due to the differences he had with Ryan.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty, who was turn-buckled by Chara last year, has been cleared for full contact but said there are some steps remaining before he considers himself recovered. He had a severe concussion and a cracked vertebra. “Obviously, there still is an injury there and I’ll have to deal with it probably for the rest of my life, but it’s been a lot better than I thought it would be.”
  • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: The next two weeks will determine who’ll play on the 2nd line while Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond are recovering. Cody Hodgson has been given the first opportunity. Mikael Samuelsson will be a top 6 forward according to coach Vigneault. If healthy, Marco Sturm could be on the 2nd line. Chris Higgins could also get a shot. Jannik Hansen, PTO Owen Nolan and point-a-game AHLer Andrew Ebbett could be possibilities.
  • Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks goalie Cory Schneider will again be the backup for Roberto Luongo if the Canucks don’t get what they want for him.

“I signed a two-year contract, so I’m bound to my contract, and I’m going to fulfil it, and show up and work hard, and do what I agreed to do,” he said Monday.

“You can’t sign a two-year deal assuming you’re going to be moved or want to get out of it in the middle of it. I was coming off my rookie deal where I had almost no game experience, so a two-year contract sounded like some good security and a good chance to establish myself in this league, so I don’t regret the decision and I’d do it again. It’s just how it’s played out.”

Cole thinks the Oilers could be a team that would be interested in Schneider.

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks defenseman Kurtis Foster will be out 2-4 weeks as he needs surgery to remove a small metal wire from his thigh. The wire was inserted into his thigh to hold a rod that was part of the surgery in March 2008 to repair his broken femur. He’ll miss the first couple weeks of the regular season.
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: The longer the Doughty contract situation drags on, the more of a problem it becomes for the Kings. Lombardi completely shot down the trade route for Doughty on Sunday. There is some concern how the process is impacting Doughty’s psyche. In August Logan Couture talked about the Doughty talks, “It’s been tough on him, he’s getting frustrated,” Couture said. “It’s definitely been tough on him to be waiting so long.” Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller could see some playing time as early as today, doctor’s still don’t know what caused his vertigo bouts last year. Nikita Filatov will see some exhibition time on the top line with Jason Spezza.

Avery arrested … Notes on RFAs Schenn and Doughty … Nolan, Fedoruk get PTO from Canucks … Alfredsson to skate next week

  • TMZ: Sean Avery was arrested this early morning for pushing a cop who was attempting to break up a loud party at his Hollywood Hills home. A neighbor called the police at 1:00 am, and when they arrived, Avery answered, shoved the cop and slammed the door. He was cooperative with the police after they knocked again. He’s being held on $20,000.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The city of Toronto has grown on Luke Schenn and he’s keen on staying, “Something will get figured out for sure.” Schenn added:

“I started here and had a good opportunity. As far as the team goes, we haven’t made the playoffs yet and we’ve had a bit of a rough time as an organization in terms of the standings. (But) I’ve played three years here and got to know a lot of people in this city. I have a better idea of how things work. No question I want to be part of things going forward and help achieve some success.

“Being drafted here (the Leafs traded up to get him fifth overall) was a dream come true for a kid and I got to experience a lot at a young age. I want to be part of the organization, hopefully, into the future.”

Hornby thinks Schenn will get a deal in the $3-4 million range.

  • Dan Rosen of NHL.com: A better comparison for Drew Doughty would be Dion Phaneuf (6 years, $39 million) or perhaps Mike Green (4 years, $5.25 million). Doughty and Shea Weber have similar stats but Weber is 26, Doughty is 21. If Doughty signs before Luke Schenn and Zach Bogosian, he could help set the market for the other 2 as he’s been more productive so far. LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi said they continue to have contract discussions and is confident a deal will be get done. The Kings may be looking to lock Doughty up long-term, but he may only be looking for a short-term deal.
  • Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk have signed professional tryout contracts with the Vancouver Canucks. Nolan had other PTO offers but he thought the Canucks were the best fit.

“I don’t want to say I’m happy that opportunity is there, you want those guys to be healthy, especially if I’m going to be part of that team,” said Nolan, reached at his off-season home in San Jose. “But there is an opportunity there and I’m going to give it everything I have to take a job.”

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Daniel Alfredsson, who’s recovering from a back procedure, will begin skating next week. Alfredsson is confident he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.

“I can’t say I’m 100% right now, but it’s definitely a lot better,” said Alfredsson, who has been stretching and doing yoga three times a week. “I haven’t really skated that much since February, so if I can get a little bit more ice, that’s good.”

Drew Doughty may have concussion? Gretzky not going to KHL … Canucks keeping all Dmen? Lupul skating

  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty suffered an upper-body injury in the 1st period of last night’s game. He played almost 7 minutes in the 1st period, was on the last in the final minute, but didn’t return for the 2nd. Helene Elliott says that the upper-body injury could be a possible concussion from a hit by Hurricanes forward, Eric Cole. JP Hoornstra reports that Doughty won’t accompany the team to Phoenix for tonight’s game. The NHL could review the hit as it might have been from the blind-side, and a little late.

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Kevin Bieksa had been on the rumor trade block for most of the summer, and it’s still possible that he could be moved once Sami Salo comes back, but … “We went into last year with nine defensemen, and at the end of the season, we didn’t have enough,” Gillis told ESPN.com in late September. “There’s a lot of time, and a lot of things can happen between now and when Sami is able to return.” Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis are both out and have missed 6 games combined.
  • Eric Stephen via twitter: Anaheim Ducks forward Joffrey Lupul has begun light skating. He still has a long ways to go before he can return to game action.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Owen Nolan had been skating in San Jose, but now he’s headed to Switzerland to join Zurich. Nolan is going to show people that he can still play, and hopes to get a call from the NHL.
  • Tom Reed and Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Blue Jackets: Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ethan Moreau suffered a broken hand when he blocked a shot from Paul Mara in the 2nd period last night. Mike Commodore’s left thumb is sprained and not broken as the fracture revealed in last week’s x-ray was an old one. He has been placed on the IR retroactive to Oct. 16th. Winger Jared Boll is at least a week away as he slowly recovers from back spasms.

Rumor round-up from LeBrun and Garrioch … HNIC Hotstove video

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery hasn’t retired from the NHL, and is hoping to get back in the new year. “He’s working really hard. He wants to get back and he’s committed,” said agent J.P. Barry. Marc Savard passed his exertion test, and could resume skating soon. Owen Nolan is still skating in San Jose and hopes to sign on with someone, Pittsburgh could be a possibility. The New York Rangers are keeping their eye on the Brad Richards-Dallas Stars situation. The Rangers are looking to move Matt Gilroy. The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to add a tough defenseman and a centerman. They made a pitch for Brendan Morrison before he decided on Calgary. Coaches on the hotseat: Brent Sutter (Cal), Randy Carlyle (Ana), and Todd Richards (Min). Washington,  Columbus, and Anaheim are keeping an eye on Sheldon Souray.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland will propose new overtime format at next months GM meeting, 4-on-4 for four minutes and 3-on-3 for the remaining four minutes. What LeBrun has been told the Oilers could be thinking with regards to Souray,

    1. Do they eventually put him on re-entry waivers and live with paying him half of the remainder of his contract once another team picks him up at half the price?

    2. Or do they continue to wait to make a hockey deal, which they’ve been doing for more than a year, and perhaps not move him until June, when he’s suddenly more attractive to teams because he only has a year left on his deal?

The Rangers are mildly interested in Souray, but only through re-entry. The Blue Jackets may no longer be interested in Souray. Marc-Andre Bergeron will have his surgically repaired ACL looked at to see how the progress is going. Teams looking for power play help will be interested.

  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Ron MacLean, Eric Fancis, Glenn Healy & Pierre LeBrun.

Modin signing with the Thrashers … Cheechoo gets tryout from Stars … Kozlov still wants to play in NHL

  • TSN: A Swedish website is reporting that the Atlanta Thrashers have signed winger Fredrik Modin. Modin struggled last season, recording only 11 points in 44 games.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Slava Kozlov’s agent, Scott Lites, told the Sporting News that his client hasn’t given up playing in the NHL. He has been offered a couple tryouts, but is unlikely to accept that option.
  • David Pollak  of the San Jose Mercury News: Owen Nolan passed on the Minnesota Wild in hopes that he could land a contract from the San Jose Sharks, but the team is looking to go younger. The Wild went out and signed 3 free agents, leaving no room for Nolan. Nolan still hopes to land somewhere.

Price negotiations progressing … More on Guerin’s skate with some Flyers

  • TSN: According to Carey Price’s agent, contract negotiations are progressing, but there is still a ways to go. He hopes that a deal is in place before training camp. It was reported earlier that Price is asking for $3 million, and that he is ready to go on “strike” if he doesn’t get it.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Bill Guerin sent a text message to the Sporting News saying that he was just in town (Philadelphia), and that while he skated with some Flyers, there’s nothing more to it at the moment. Guerin’s agent, Bob Murray, said that he just needed a place to skate and that they’ve had discussion with a couple teams. Teams may be looking to use cheaper, younger players before committing to veterans like Guerin and Owen Nolan. Nolan’s agent, JP Barry, said that Nolan would prefer to stay on the West Coast.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Guerin said that his skate with the Flyers has been planned for weeks. A source said last week that the Flyers and Guerin talked right after the Penguins said they weren’t interested, but the Flyers can’t currently get him under the cap. Seravalli thinks they could fit him in if he signed for the league minimum or sent one of Darroll Powe , Dan Carcillo, Matt Walker or Oskars Bartulis to the AHL.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: It’s a tough time for some of the remaining free agents looking for a contract; Patrick O’Sullivan, Ryan Potulny, Mike Comrie, Brendan Morrison, Marek Svatos, Ruslan Fedotenko, Jeff Halpern, Miro Satan, Bill Guerin and Owen Nolan are still looking for a deal. O’Sullivan has it a bit better than the others as he’ll be paid $450,000 for the next two seasons from his buyout. He’s only 25, and has put up 149 points in 280 games, and should get an offer of at least $500,000.

Post on Kovalchuk situation coming shortly,  because I know you’re all not sick and tired of hearing/reading about him.

Kovalchuk’s agent calls KHL … Why Mitchell didn’t sign with the Sharks, Canucks … Fehr in as NHLPA leader?

  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: According to @plysenkov and their mutual sources, the league is looking for a 13 year contract for Kovalchuk.
  • Craig Custance via twitter: KHL president Alexander Medvedev said that he received a call from Jay Grossman, Kovalchuk’s agent, and he remains hopeful that the KHL is still an option.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Medvedev is still hopeful that his club, SKA St. Petersberg can sign Kovalchuk. “Ilya knows that our proposal is still on the table,” Medvedev said. “Actually, I got a call from his agent. I will call (him back) after I finishing the discussion with you.” Gary Bettman said yesterday that the NHL did not reject a second contract between the Devils and Kovalchuk (reports were that the ‘framework’ had been rejected). Bill Daly said he thinks that Kovalchuk will stay but league will stand by their rejection of the contract even if Kovalchuk leaves for Russia.
  • David Pollack  of the San Jose Mercury News: The San Jose Sharks, and at least 2 other teams were unwilling to offer Willie Mitchell a multi-year deal, money wasn’t the issue. A front-office source says the Sharks won’t be bringing back Owen Nolan. Sources also tell Pollack that the team isn’t interested in Antti Niemi.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: With the Canucks over the salary cap by around $3 million, they couldn’t offer Mitchell a lot. They were offered him a one-year deal in the $1.8-$2 million range.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Sources are saying that Donald Fehr will be taking over as the executive director of the NHLPA.  Fehr stepped down from the MLBPA last year, and has been link to the NHLPA for months. The NHL 30 player reps will put it to a vote, which may not be completed until after the season starts.

Not many trades at the draft, but that could change now … Savard to Leafs?

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: It appears that the Toronto Maple leafs are considering trading for Marc Savard. Savard is willing to waive his no trade clause for either Toronto or Ottawa. Savard received a concussion from a Matt Cooke hit last season, and has a cap hit of about $4 million for 7 years. His contract is front end loaded. Cox thinks it could be a risky pick up for the Leafs but one the Leafs may not be able to resist. It is speculated that if the LA Kings don’t sign Ilya Kovalchuk, they may look at Tomas Kaberle. The Lightning also showed some interest in Kaberle, and could offer up Ryan Malone.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The price to acquire Marc Savard will be much cheaper than that for Tim Thomas. Savard may not be a ‘Burke-type’ player, but adding Phil Kessel’s old center is intriguing. Burke can’t say much due to tampering rules. Kaberle is not expected to be in any talks for Savard. McGran thinks the Bruins could be talked into Mikael Grabovski. Savard’s salary and his concussion last year could bring down the price.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: The Leafs won’t do a Kaberle for Savard deal. Rumors are floating around that GM Peter Chiarelli has downgraded his demands for Savard, possibly prospects and/or draft picks. Longley thinks the Leafs could get Savard for Grabovski or Nikolai Kulemin and others. Things for Kaberle could pick on later on this week for Tomas Kaberle, to land another top forward.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If the Ottawa Senators are unable to re-sign Andy Sutton and Anton Volchenkov, they could take a look at Sheldon Souray. Jonathan Cheechoo could be included as they’d need the cap numbers to be similar, the Oilers could then buyout Cheechoo as they have the space to absorb the cap hit. Defensemen Brian Lee and Chris Campoli may also be on the trading block. The Senators may take a look at signing Dan Hamhuis or Sergei Gonchar if they become available.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Penguins are trying to sign recently acquired UFA, Dan Hamhuis. They are also still talking Sergei Gonchar, who wants a 3 year deal, which he won’t get from Pittsburgh. If they can’t reach an agreement soon, they’ll look to trade his rights. The Devils acquired Jason Arnott a couple weeks ago in hope of getting Patrick Elias going. The Buffalo Sabres were originally looking to draft a forward, but went with Mark Pysyk. The Minnesota Wild won’t be bring Owen Nolan back next season. He’d like to finish his career in San Jose but Pittsburgh and Washington would give him a better chance to win the cup. The Washington Capitals are looking for a number 2 center in the $3.5 million range or less (I think Matthew Lombardi could be an interesting fit, though in this weak free agent crop, he may get more than $3.5 mill).
  • Damian Cristero of the St. Petersberg Times: There was talk over the weekend that the Tampa Bay Lightning showed interest in trading for Tomas Kaberle, and the rights to Evgeni Nabokov and Chris Mason. It might take a Ryan Malone to get Kaberle, which may not make sense for them. Nabokov’s rights went to the Flyers. Yzerman doesn’t expect to make a big splash in free agency, though he will be looking at adding a goalie. Options could be: Mason, Marty Turco, Michael Leighton, Dan Ellis, Martin Biron and Jose Theodore.
  • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: While most teams shied away from the Russians at the draft, the Capitals picked up 2 of the top Russians, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stanislav Galiev. GM George McPhee believes the lure of playing with Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin, while give some Russians a stronger desire to play in the NHL.
  • Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Columbus GM Scott Howson on how it can be hard to make a trade at the draft, “It’s very difficult to go to a team right at the draft table and say ‘Do you want this player?’ because they haven’t thought about it and haven’t done enough work on it, so they get uncomfortable with it. They’re focused on the draft.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Teams weren’t that focused on trading/unloading players at the draft, they were more concentrated on drafting players or trading for draft picks, moving up or down.

More on the Flyers goalie situation … Leafs and Blue Jackets interested in Patrick Sharp …

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Carchidi thinks the Flyers should re-sign Leighton and go after a ‘more proven goalie’. Brian Boucher is still under contract for one more year (at a reasonable number), and they could try to get him through waivers, as injuries happen and he’s still a capable goalie if they need him. Jeff Carter’s name will continue to circulate the rumor mill as the Flyers are deep in capable centers (Richards, Danny Briere, and Giroux). LA’s Quick and Bernier are mentioned, with Bernier seeming to get the nod as the Kings ‘goalie of the future’. They could make a bid for Cory Schneider (for a defenseman), but he may be more for the future and not the ‘proven goalie’. They could ask Gagne if he’d waive his no trade to go to Montreal for Carey Price (would have to send more to Montreal in my opinion). The safest option might be to go after UFA Dan Ellis. The 30-year old Ellis posted a 2.69 GAA and .909 SV% last season with the Predators, where he made $2 million as mainly a backup to Pekka Rinne. If the Flyers want to spend more, they could look at Evgeny Nabokov or Marty Turco.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets have shown interest in the Blackhawks Patrick Sharp. Sharp has a cap hit of $3.9 million, with 2 years remaining on his contract. The ‘Hawks could interested in a high draft pick or top prospect. I think the Leafs could offer the option of also taking on another unwanted contract, but probably not one of the big ones as they don’t have a ton of salary room themselves (they are not going to bury 3-4 big contracts in the minors as per many Torontians wishes). Their is speculation that the Oilers could be interested in Kris Versteeg and his $3 million salary, 2 years remaining. UFA’s John Madden, Nick Boyton, and Kim Johnsson are as good as gone.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza appears to be available for trade before his ‘no-trade clause’ kicks in on July 1st. GMs are doing some tire-kicking with regards to trade talks according to Kings GM Dean Lombardi. Warren wonders if the Senators and Oilers would consider a similar trade as the Heatley offer, Spezza for Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano andLadislav Smid (suggested elsewhere in the past)? Would the Blue Jackets be interested in Spezza to center Rick Nash (I think the Sens would want the 4th overall pick)? Could the Florida Panthers do deal involving Spezza and Nathan Horton plus others?
  • Andrew Gross of The Record: Gross thinks that the Capitals will likely look at trading Alexander Semin and his $6 million cap hit (he signed a 1-year deal with the Caps during the season). I think this might be a good move for the Caps as if would shed $6 million and allow them to bring in some depth from trading Semin, as well as any other deals they could make. To get full value for Semin, the team acquiring him may want to get an extension in place before they make the deal, similar as to what has been talked about in a Tomas Kaberle trade. Now before Leafs fans start thinking of a Semin for Kaberle, I doubt it would happen. Sure, Semin is extremely skilled but he is really soft, more so than Phil Kessel. I don’t think Semin is what Burke is looking for, though I could be wrong. Kaberle would interest the Capitals (could you image that PP of Kaberle, Green, Ovechkin, Backstom and anyone else?). I could see Semin to someone, and a separate or 3 team deal with Kaberle heading to Washington.
  • Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: The Red Wings offered Todd Bertuzzi a 2 year contract, but it may not be more than the $1.5 million he made last season (probably closer to $1 million), so he may test the market to see what he can get elsewhere. After signing their RFAs, they’ll need find the best player possible who’ll sign for $1 million or less, on a short term contract. Several names that have been mentioned; Freddy Modin but he’ll probably want more money, same goes for Owen Nolan. Two front runners could be Mike Comrie if he could commit to a 2-way game, and Arron Asham.
  • TSN: Back on March 2nd, the Philadelphia Flyers offered Peter Forsberg a contract to join the team for the remainder of the season, but he rejected it do to injuries and “wasn’t in good enough shape to join.” As in typical Forsberg fashion, he hasn’t ruled out a return to the NHL but he still doesn’t “know if I can come back and play hockey again”.

Trade Rumors on Trade Deadline Day

Here are a bunch of Trade Rumors for you on Trade Deadline Day. Follow trades on our Trade Tracker page.

9:35 AM: Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Flyers, Capitals, and Blackhawks could be looking at Vokoun, Turco, Ellis, and Roloson. The Predators have asked for a high-end prospect and a #1 pick for Dan Hamhuis, though they might keep him and hope to make a deep run in the playoffs. The Bruins, Canucks, Flyers, Devils, Rangers and Kings have all tried to land Hamhuis. The Leafs will look to move at least Stempniak and Primeau. The Thrashers are trying to sign Pavel Kubina to an extension before he becomes a UFA at seasons end. The Canucks, Capitals and Bruins may look at Joe Corvo.

9:31 AM: Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Tomas Vokoun hasn’t been asked yet to waive his no trade clause. Paul Kariya won’t waive his no trade clause and Keith Tkachuk may not want to move as well. The Blues could move Brad Boyes if they could find a taker.

9:23 AM: James Murphy of NESN: Targets for the Bruins could be  Ray Whitney, Erik Cole and Tomas Kaberle. The 2010 first-rounder likely won’t be available back from Boston, but Chiarelli could net Kaberle with the Bruins’ original 2010 first-rounder, possibly a second-rounder and a young roster player. The chances of this happening were unlikely as of Tuesday night, but “don’t rule it out,” the source said. “Anything can happen.” There was also a rumor that the Bruins and Oilers were talking a deal that would get the Bruins a defenseman and possibly Andrew Cogliano.

9:20 AM: Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers are looking into Dwayne Roloson now that Ray Emery is done for the year. Roloson is a $2.5 million cap hit and is under contract next season.

9:15 AM: Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins GM  Peter Chiarelli will continue to look for scoring help. They may look at; Teemu Selanne, Ray Whitney, Keith Tkachuk, Cory Stillman, and Erik Cole.

9:11 AM: Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: The Canadiens may look to free up some cap space, and might look to see if they could shed Roman Hamrlik’s $5.5 million salary next season. That might be tough to do. The Habs may also look to move some salary for draft picks, with Maxim Lapierre, Glen Metropolit, and Paul Mara as potential players that could be moved out.

9:07 AM: Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Washington Capitals are showing interest in Oilers Dman, Steve Staios. Staios is 37, and has another season at $2.7 million. John Erskine and a draft pick could head the other way.

9:00 AM: Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: It looks like the Canadiens will hold on to both Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price.

Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks are still trying to trade Cristobal Huet and his %5.625 million cap hit. Rumors are that they are talking to the Panthers, Islanders and Leafs.  The Leafs shot down their interest yesterday.

Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Russo initially thought that Wild would be trading Owen Nolan, but now he’s not so sure. Unless they get a big offer, they’ll probably keep him. The Wild could be willing to move Eric Belanger.

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avs have put Wolski’s name out there, with the Coyotes Peter Mueller mentioned as a possible return. The Avalanche could look at bringing in Joe Corvo.

Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: The Lightning could use some scoring and a puck moving defenseman. They could also do some selling with Jeff Halpern, Mike Smith, Mattt Smaby, David Hale, and Alex Tanguay’s name being mentioned.

    Almost Trade Deadline Day

  • 3:59 PM: TheFourthPeriod: Alexei Ponikarovsky is close to be dealt. The Kings, Penguins, and Predators have shown serious interest. The Leafs are hoping for a 1st round pick, but might take a 2nd and top prospect.
  • 10:57 AM: Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Finding some 3rd line scoring is on the wish list of Canucks coach, Alain Vigneault. If GM Mike Gillis agrees, he may look at Steve Reinprecht, who he considered bringing in last season. Other options could be Eric Belanger, Doug Weight, or Jeff Halpern. If they are worried about Willie Mitchell’s health, they might look at Aaron Ward or Andy Sutton. 2006 1st round pick, Michael Grabner, might be bait to bring in some help.
  • 10:52 AM: Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Don Waddell tells Chris he’ll be a buyer more than a seller. He’d like to add a forward with size, and some scoring to make up for Kovalchuk’s departure. He’s talked to 15 teams, but there isn’t a lot of options available. A few teams have called about Slava Kozlov.
  • 10:46 AM: Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: The Flyers may also be talking to the Predators about goalie Dan Ellis. This would make a lot of sense for the Flyers as Ray Emery is on LTIR and Michael Leighton is their starting goalie. It would make sense for them even if Emery wasn’t on LTIR.
  • 10:43 AM: TheFouthPeriod: The Kings may have moved on from Ray Whitney and may target, Slava Kozlov, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Raffi Torres or Paul Kariya.
  • 10:39 AM: Chris Botta at NYI Point Blank: The Isles have had a couple offers, 2nd round picks for Andy Sutton but they may hold out for a 2nd rounder plus an additional pick.
  • 10:36 AM: Frank Seravalli of the Philadephia Daily News: Sources are saying the Flyers will send Ryan Parent and Braydon Coburn to the Preds for Hamhuis. May happen when Cote and Syvret clear waivers at noon today.
  • 10:31 AM: Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: The Flyers and Predators have talked about Dan Hamhuis. The Preds have asked about several players, including Ryan Parent, who they sent to Philly in the Forsberg deal in 2007.
  • 10:25 AM: Sam Carchiki of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers freed up $2 million in cap room by placing Ray Emery on LTIR and waiving Riley Cote, bringing their total cap room up to $2.8 million. They have shown interest in Alex Frolov, Raffi Torres, and Colby Armstrong. Dan Hamhuis could be their main target.
  • 10:23 AM: Kevin Mio of Habs Inside/Out: The Canadiens and Tomas Plekanec’s agent held talks during the Olympic break, and will continue to talk after the trade deadline day.
  • 10:19 AM: Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland doesn’t expect to make any moves at the deadline, but if he does do something, it will have to be dollar-for-dollar as they are against the cap. “Our trade deadline was Franzen, Lilja and Kronwall,” he said, referring to the healthy return of Johan Franzen, Andreas Lilja and Niklas Kronwall. “Not too many teams are going to do any better than that.”
  • Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel: After trading Jordan Leopold yesterday, and Dominic Moore before the Olympics, the Panthers may still not be finished dealing. Tomas Vokoun, Dennis Seidenberg, Rostislav Olesz, Cory Stillman, and Steven Reinprect, could be some of the few that are moved.
  • Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: The Oilers acquired a 2nd round pick for Denis Grebeshkov yesterday, and they will still make several other moves. From GM Steve Tambellini, “I wouldn’t say everyone is on the block, but given where we are I’d be crazy not to listen to everything,” he said. “That doesn’t mean we’re going to do it, but I’ll listen to everything.”
  • Michael Russo and Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild and Marek Zidlicky have contract that is all but complete. It is a 3 year deal for the 33 year old, but the sticking point is the full no-trade clause that Zidlicky wants. The Wild only want to include a no-trade clause for part of the contract. If they can’t agree on the contract, they’ll most likely trade Zidlicky. They are also getting some calls about Owen Nolan, and it’s also rumored that they might be willing to trade Eric Belanger.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Marek Svatos is waiting to be traded, his bags are already packed, now he’s just waiting for the Avalanche to trade him. Svatos was in the lineup last night playing on the 2nd line, with scouts from at least 2 teams in attendance, the Blackhawks and Sharks.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Ladislav Smid’s name was creeping into a few trade rumors, but that will probably be the end of them as he has bulging disc in his neck. In the next few days he’ll visit a neurologist to decide if he’ll just need a short rest, or if it will be a season ending injury, that might require surgery.
