Will facts come out in Kovalchuk benching today? Plenty of players not at practice today … New #1 line in Toronto?

- Greg Brady via twitter: From a Devils insider, Kovalchuk’s benching had nothing to do with his on-ice play. Brady speculates that it might come out today what the real reason was, theory is the he skipped or was late for special teams meeting.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: David Krejci was absent for the Bruins practice today. Andrew Ference moved up to the #1 defensive pairing with Zdeno Chara now that Johnny Boychuk is out. Dennis Seidenberg is with Mark Stuart. Matt Hunwick is with Adam McQuaid.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: In December when Marc Savard and Marco Sturm come off LTIR ($7.5 million combined), the Bruins will have to move out a couple bodies. They currently have $1.8 million in cap space with the 2 on LTIR. It’s been mentioned for awhile that Michael Ryder and his $4 million salary could be on his way out, but they’ll have to move more than that. Marco Strum hasn’t been approached about waiving his no movement clause, and it’s unlikely that he would. Blake Wheeler ($2.2 million) and Matt Hunwich ($1.4 million) are possible trade candidates.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Columbus Blue Jackets left winger Kristian Huselius will not play tonight against the Flyers due to a foot/ankle injury.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned Eric Tangradi and Andrew Hutchinson to the AHL. So it looks like Aaron Asham and Zbynek Michalek are ready to go.
- Ben Wright via twitter: Peter Mannino has been assigned to the AHL, Ondrej Pavelec has been activated from IR.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Nikolai Kulemin was skating with Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel at Maple Leafs practice today. Versteeg was with Grabovski and MacArthur.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: Mike Green and Tom Poti are practicing today, Karl Alzner and John Carlson are not. Masisak reports that Poti lasted only 10 minutes at the Capitals practice. Katie Carrera reports that Alzner was excused for personal reasons. Masisak reports that Brooks Laich is playing defense at practice today.
- Allen Panzeri via twitter: Jason Spezza, Filip Kuba, and Pascal Leclaire are not at the Senators practice today.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Missing from the Lightning’s practice today: Simon Gagne (neck), Dominic Moore (lower-body), Brett Clark (wrist), Matt Smaby (illness) and Mattias Ohlund (rest).
- Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Michael Nylander will undergo surgery today for an injury to one of his vertebra in his neck. Nylander was checked into the boards with what appeared to be a legal hit. It could be career ending.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: Eugeni Artiukin is close to joining SKA.

- Tom Gulitti via twitter: The decision to scratch Ilya Kovalchuk from the New Jersey Devils lineup was made mid-day, and it was John MacLean’s decision and not managements. MacLean later added, “I’m not discussing it. It was my decision. I made it. He (Kovy) knows. I spoke to him and that’s where it’s going to stay.” EJ Hradek is not buying that MacLean didn’t run this by Lou Lamorielle before making the decision. Andy Strickland tweeted that since New Jersey is one of most secretive organizations, Kovalchuk either violated a team rule or is injured. Gulitti tweeted that MacLean wouldn’t give the reason why he sat him, and wouldn’t answer if it was because of his play.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Ottawa Senators would like Anaheim Ducks to take Brian Lee off their hands, the Ducks may be more interested Chris Campoli, though there may not be a fit between the 2 teams. The Ducks have also been talking to the Sabres. Erik Ersberg cleared waivers and his contract was terminated. Ersberg originally reported to the AHL, but he left the team on Thursday, therefore the Kings were able to terminate the contact due to breach of contract. Jimmy Howard is a UFA at seasons end, there haven’t been any contract talks between him and the Red Wings yet.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza missed his 3rd game of the season with a groin injury. “We’re going to sit him until he’s 100 per cent confident that he can go out and play at the top of his game,” coach Cory Clouston said Saturday morning. “We have to trust that he knows his body and when he goes in and talks to the doctors and trainers, it’s not going to be 70 per cent or 60 per cent. It has got to be 95 per cent or 100 per cent.” Pascal Leclaire is also out with a groin injury, is practicing on his own is could be back within a week.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: St. Louis Blues defenseman Roman Polak sliced his right wrist on Sidney Crosby’s skate last night. Full extent of injury isn’t known yet, but Strickland was told it’s likely he avoided serious ligament or tendon damage.
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: Brandon Prust who was clipped in the eye by a high stick has been cleared by doctors, flew home with the team.

Problems in Ottawa? Senators looking to make a move

- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Things aren’t going well in Ottawa so far this season. Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray thinks that Alexei Kovalev may be skating slower this year, possibly due to his off-season knee surgery, though Kovalev disagrees. Kovalev practiced yesterday on the 4th line with Ryan Shannon and Jesse Winchester. Jason Spezza missed yesterday’s practice, but was a ‘maintenance day’ according to Cory Clouston. Filip Kuba skated without equipment yesterday, he’s recovering from a broken leg he sustained on the first day of training camp. Pascal Leclaire could return to the ice today, but won’t see game action before next week.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Murray hasn’t been happy with the way the team has played defensively, and called out his young guys (Erik Karlsson and Brian Lee). Chris Phillips has to be their top defender, has played well with Sergei Gonchar, but they haven’t been able to use that pairing as much as they’d like. Murray defended the play of Phillips, Spezza, Alfredsson and Fisher.
- Lisa Wallace (CP) in the Globe and Mail: Murray is looking to shake things up, and is considering making a move.
“I’ve talked to a number of people,” Murray added. “I talked to (Minnesota Wild general manager) Chuck Fletcher for a long time yesterday and said, ‘Can I help you, you help me’ type of thing, so we’re talking to management of other teams, trying to find if there is a need and a possibility of making a move.”
“We’re not moving the puck up from the back end, we’re not defending very well and we’re giving up far too many chances,” said Murray. “I just think we turn the puck over in our own end and we haven’t battled defensively the way we should and the way we’re capable of doing in my own opinion. The result is we’re scrambling for the puck too often.”
Now I don’t have a problem with Murray coming out and saying the club is struggling and he’s looking to shake things up. The thing that surprised me is that he mentions that he’s talked with Wild GM Chuck Fletcher.

- Chris Botta via twitter: Nick Foligno was fined the max amount, $2,500 for his blind-side hit on Patrick Dwyer. Colin Campbell added that this was Foligno’s first offense.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Mike Green will not play in the next Capitals game against the Nashville Predators, due to an upper-body injury. Corey Masisak is reporting that Green is not at practice.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: According to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau on their goaltending situation, “Whoever is playing better, for the most part. If they’re both playing equal, they’ll split.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Sheldon Souray says he’s playing tonight for the Hershey Bears.
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: It appears the trade window for the Columbus Blue Jackets to acquire Sheldon Souray is practically closed. Souray would have to clear through re-entry waivers, and he wouldn’t likely make it though.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Johan Franzen said after the game last night that he suffered a concussion after being hit by Stars Dman Mark Fistric. Mike Babcock said he’ll wait to hear what the doctors say before labeling the injury.
- Chris Botta of Fanhouse: Brad Richards has had some discussion with Stars management about his future with the team, but don’t expect a contract anytime soon. “It’s really out of my control,” Richards told NHL FanHouse. “There’s so much uncertainty right now. If you don’t know who you’re going to be playing for, there’s little point in worrying about it.”
- Allen Panzeri via twitter: The Ottawa Senators won’t know how serious Pascal Leclaire’s injury is until early next week. Wayne Scanlan via twitter: Leclaire injured his groin on the first shot of the game, and won’t travel with the team to Montreal and Pittsburgh.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: The Dallas Stars have placed Fabian Brunnstrom on waivers.

- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer has an agreement in principle with the City of Glendale which could give him $100 million from parking, taxes and property levies to help cover losses, on a multi-year lease. Despite this positive news for Coyotes fans in Phoenix, the bad news follows in that he wants a big discount on the $165 million purchase price. The NHL bought the team for $140 million. They have until Dec. 31st to find local buyer or the team could be up for relocation. The NHL already has bid from Winnipeg based True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd. for at least $165 million. An NHL governor has said that Hulsizer was told by Gary Bettman that the team would not be sold for less than what the team has cost the league. They may have put up $175 million, with the City of Glendale kicking in $25 million. According to a report in the Arizona Republic, the City of Glendale owes a total of $500 million for sports facilities it’s built, $180 for the Jobing.com arena.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators lone bright spot this season is out with a lower-body injury. Pascal Leclaire last just over 2 minutes into the game last night, suffering the injury during a scrum. The severity of the injury is unknown at the moment. Brian Elliot would be starter if Leclaire is out, Robin Lehner may get the call to back him up as Mike Brodeur is out with an injury.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record: The New Jersey Devils have lost defenseman Mark Fraser for 4-6 weeks after a pin was inserted into his fractured right hand. No decision has been made yet if he’ll be placed on IR. Anton Volchenkov will miss tonight’s game against the Avalanche, but they will not say if he’s out tomorrow night or not. Brian Rolston’s hernia surgery was successful, he’ll be out 4-6 weeks.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: It won’t be known probably until after the pre-game warmup if Anaheim Ducks Dman, Toni Lydman, will make his season debut. Lydman hasn’t played a game since last April, and missed all of training camp. Andreas Lilja is still waiting to get his work visa.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson will be a UFA at seasons end, and Dater wonders if he’d take a ‘hometown’ discount on an extension. The Avs were a team that offered Anderson a chance to be a #1 goalie. He could get $4.5 million a year offer if he put played like he did last year. If Anderson and Avs can’t get a deal done, they can not left him go for nothing.
- Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: NY Islanders rookie Nino Niederreiter is making his case to stay with the club beyond 9 games. He’ll play is 4th game tonight, the 9th game would be Oct. 27th. Niederreiter scored his 1st NHL goal on Tuesday. “He’s got a good head on his shoulders,” [coach] Gordon said. “I think he’s a focused individual. He doesn’t just take anything for granted. He works at things. He’s a good listener. Those are the things that, as a coach, you can’t take for granted because not every 18-year-old is like that.”
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: NY Rangers captain Chris Drury will return to the lineup tonight against the Maple Leafs, and will likely replace Erik Christensen (groin) centering Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov. Matt Gilroy will make his season debut replacing Mike Sauer.

- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Friday is the Ottawa Senators 1st game of the season, and it’s not known who their starting goalie will be. Coach Cory Clouston knows, but isn’t telling until Friday morning. “Elliott played three games and had a 3.24 GAA to go along with a .882 save percentage, while Leclaire had a 4.43 GAA and an even uglier .856 GAA.”
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Minnesota Wild will not be putting in a claim for Michael Grabner, who was put on waivers yesterday by the Florida Panthers.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Miroslav Satan signs with a Slovakian team, but has an out clause if the NHL comes calling.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa, who was rumored to be traded for most of the summer, finds himself on the number one defensive unit with Dan Hamhuis. Christian Ehrhoff and Alex Edler on the 2nd pairing, and Keith Ballard (had off-season hip surgery) with Andrew Alberts.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: John Mitchell is on a “chihuahua leash” after remaining with the club due to past play and not pre-season play, as Luca Caputi and mainly Christian Hanson outplayed him. Mitchell would have to clear waivers, and could snatched by someone. The same leash may be around Jeff Finger’s neck, he’s currently the team’s 7th defenseman. That may change soon as Brett Lebda and Matt Lashoff are recovering from injury. Roman Hamrlik, who’s been recovering from an off-season knee injury, skated with the team yesterday, and could be a go on Thursday.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres currently have 26 players still in camp, and have until tomorrow to get down to 23. Marc-Andre Gragnani will be placed on IR, and if Patrick Lalime’s is over his groin injury, they’ll only need to make a decision on 1 player. Tomas Vanek should be ready for Friday’s opener, suffered a head/neck injury last week. Forward Matt Ellis is a likely candidate to be sent to Portland of the AHL, he’d have to clear through waivers first and there is a chance someone would claim him.

- Friedman thinks that the Canadiens should consider trading Carey Price. The return for Price would be greater than Jaroslav Halak.
- Sheldon Souray has given the Oilers a list of teams he’ll waive his no-trade clause for. In a perfect world for Souray, the Kings and/or Ducks would come calling.
- Trade talks are begining to heat up amongst teams, as one GM said “I got six calls on Friday. I hadn’t got that many in weeks.”

- Robyn Norwood of the LA Times: The Anaheim Ducks will be without Teemu Selanne for 2 to 6 weeks after surgery to repair 2 broken bones in his jaw after he took a puck in the face the other night. His participation in the Olympics is in question. He should be fully healed by the trade deadline day.
- John Glennon of the Tennessean: The Nashville Predators find themselves in a situation similar to the Montreal Canadiens, they have 2 free goalies (Pekka Rinne and Dan Ellis) who think they should be a number one goalie. The Preds have been rotating between goalies lately. They may be leaning towards keeping both goalies for the remainder of the season and then trade one before July 1st and at least receive some compensation. “I don’t see (a goalie trade) happening now, but if one of our guys was to play 15 games in a row before the deadline, or if there were injuries, problems or holes in another area we needed to fill … ” Poile said before the team left on its three-game swing.
- Rich Hammond of the LAKingsInsider.com: Hammond interviews GM Dean Lombardi. Lombardi has a meeting scheduled this month with Frolov’s agent. If they are unable to reach a deal by the trade deadline, they are still most likely going to hang on to him instead of trading for draft picks. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Frolov would be part of a package to bring a star, such as some guy playing in Atlanta.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Ray Shero has begun contract talks with defenceman Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang. I think it will be tough to fit both Gonchar and Letang under the Pens salary cap, unless both players sign for a friendly number.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire suffered a mild concussion at yesterday’s morning skate after taking a shot to the head. The Sens goaltender statistics rank among the worst, and sf the Sens begin looking for a goalie, expect to hear Martin Biron’s name come up. Same could be said for any team that might be in the market for a goalie.
- The Calgary Herald: The Flames would like to re-sign both Olli Jokinen and Rene Bourque. Jokinen would have to take a pay cut, and Bourque will be looking for a big raise as he’s having an excellent season. Some are saying Bourque could get in the neighbourhood of $4 million a season.

- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The future of Mathieu Schneider is still up in the air after he left the team last week for ‘personal reasons’. Schneider has been the Canucks 6th-7th Dman this year and last Friday he was “Removed from the lineup to make way for Aaron Rome, Schneider bolted from the dressing room without talking to reporters, had an animated discussion with Canucks’ player development guru Dave Gagner, the defenceman’s contemporary, and left. He hasn’t been seen since.” I’m guessing he’s pondering retirement or if he’d like the Canucks to move him somewhere else.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Both Pascal Leclaire and Chris Neil will return to the Senators lineup tonight against the Penguins.
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Victor Stalberg, fresh off of his AHL recall, scoring 2 goals in 3 games, is on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Richard Wallin will be in the lineup tonight in his place. Wallin has 2 assists in 26 games, mostly on the 4th. Stalberg’s scored the 2 goals while playing on the 4th line.
- Brandon Hall of the Boston Globe: Milan Lucic is still eying Jan. 1st Winter Classic as his return date.
- Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun: Ryan Poultny has been promoted to the Oilers #1 line with Dustin Penner and Gilbert Brule … and why are they in last place in the Western Conference? And here I thought the Maple Leafs top line looked bad.

- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Talks between Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers have apparently hit a snag. “Our position is different than his position right now,” Waddell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before Monday night’s game with Montreal.
“Their position is fixed years with money and we have a different side of that.”That’s what we have to work through. We’ve gotten through every thing else, now we have to make it through that.”
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: It is not a true rumor, but he mentions, “Rather than dismantle the Oilers, isn’t it more likely they would place some new bet on some new aging hockey ace, such as Vincent Lecavalier? I can see a Tom Gilbert, Andrew Cogliano, Fernando Pisani and Jordan Eberle for Lecavalier trade right now.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Finally some good news heading the Red Wings way, Valtteri Filppula is nearing a return. Shortly after Christmas, Filppula should be back.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: The Lightning have been shopping defenseman Lukas Krajicek without any takers so far. Krajicek was sent to the minors, but won’t be put through re-entry waivers.
- Rachel Blount of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: Minnesota Wild’s winger, Petr Sykora, is still recovering from a concussion, but nearing a return. He’s been skating on his own since last week, and missed his 20th game last night.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ryan Smyth returned to the Kings practice yesterday. He’s missed the last 15 games with a rib injury, and could return to the line on Saturday.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators goalie, Pascal Leclaire, is ready to return tomorrow after missing several weeks after taking a puck in the face. Brian Elliott will go back to being the backup.

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky is getting closer to returning from a broken right hand. Tortorella thinks he might return in a week or so.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire could return to the Sens crease in about 10 days. Leclaire has been out since Nov. 23rd after having his cheekbone broken by a puck while sitting on the bench.
- Puck Prospectus from ESPN: They are speculating that Canucks and Leafs could work out a deal with Shane O’Brien heading to the Leafs. We noted here a few days ago that O’Brien is being shopped, but I don’t see the Leafs trading for his $1.6 million salary. Yes he’s the type of player Burke likes but I don’t see where he’d fit in the Leafs D plans, unless you can unload either Jeff Finger or Garnett Exelby. The Leafs are close to the cap limit.
- Canadian Press in the Globe and Mail: Talk is heating up again of the NHL adding to the number of Canadian teams. It would be a smart move for the NHL to bring one or two of the struggling American teams up to Canada, but that would mean the Gary was wrong about something. Can Bettman admit he was wrong about hockey in non traditional markets? I’m not so sure of that.
