Sutter steps down in Calgary …. Rolston assigned to AHL with purpose of re-entry waivers … Svatos signs with Blues … Starting goalies

- TSN: Darryl Sutter has stepped down as the Calgary Flames general manager effective immediately. Jay Feaster, who was the teams assistant GM, will take over as GM .
“We will move forward under a new administration with Jay leading our hockey operations as Acting General Manager,” said King. “For the remainder of this season, Jay will be provided the opportunity to evaluate the team from the GM’s chair and build a long term plan. We believe that while we continue to compete for a playoff position this season, this period will provide both the organization and Jay time to decide on critical future decisions.”
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston has been assigned to the AHL and will be placed on re-entry waivers. Darren Dreger via twitter: Rolston will be available for half price, a couple teams said they would be interested in him on re-entry when he was originally waived. Capgeek via twitter: If he’s claimed on re-entry waivers, he’ll still count $2,531,250 against the cap.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Marek Svatos signs with the St. Louis Blues. A 2-way deal that will pay him $800,000 in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL. He must clear waivers first because he was playing in the KHL before.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Michael Del Zotto did not practice due to groin injury, and may not play tomorrow (may not have played even if groin was fine).
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Patrice Cormier was recalled by the Atlanta Thrashers, Tim Stapleton was sent to the AHL.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Semyon Varlamov was the first goalie off for the Capitals, therefore likely to start.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will start for the Maple Leafs tonight against the Hurricanes.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: It doesn’t look like Jordan Staal will be playing in the Winter Classic. He’ll have more x-rays tonight.

- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: To start training camp, the Sharks have split up Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. Thornton is centering Ryan Clowe and Devin Setoguchi, while Joe Pavelski is centering Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau.
- Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov is still recovering from late season knee surgery, but it’s progressing. “In my dreams, I want to come back tomorrow, but I can’t. Maybe another month, I don’t know, maybe more, maybe less,” he said.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The 25 year old Brent Seabrook might be the next player GM Stan Bowman tries to lock up long term. Seabrook will be a RFA at seasons end, and is making $3.5 million this year.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers prospect Patrice Cormier broke his foot after blocking a shot. Cormier was acquired in the Kovalchuk trade, but may be more known for being suspended from the QMJHL for a nasty hit.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If the Columbus Blue Jackets defensive corps has some struggles during training camp/pre-season, don’t be surprised if Sheldon Souray talks heat up. The Oilers want a defenseman or 2 in return, and have cap space to take on more contract.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Ken Hitchcock will be attending the Red Wings training camp. “Hitch said, ‘I want to learn, can I come to camp?’ ” Babcock said. “He wants to learn, but I want to learn, too.” “If he can get something from us and we can get something from him, that’s a bonus.”
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The bringing in the versatile Adam Mair on a tryout means the Devils won’t be bringing back Dean McAmmond. Lou said the door isn’t closed in bringing back defenseman Mike Mottau. Mottau’s fate with the Devils depends on if they move out defenseman as they attempt to get under the cap.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson and defenseman Tomas Kaberle have had they private meeting to smooth things out regarding their alleged feud. “I know (a feud) is a nice story for you guys to hang your hats on,” he said added with a smile, “but there really isn’t an issue. I just wanted to get that out there and be on the offensive and give you the information so you aren’t running around thinking (he’s benched) and there is something else going on.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have received calls to see if they would be interested in bringing in any of Robert Lang, Bill Guerin and Petr Sykora on a tryout, but they declined. They don’t have much room under the cap so they don’t want to bring anyone else in.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Mark Parrish will attend the Buffalo Sabres training on a tryout.

- EJ Hradek via twitter: Meeting at the League office in New York yesterday involving Kovalchuk’s agent, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: A contract for Kovalchuk was submitted to the league, just talked about the structure.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Willie Mitchell won’t discuss where he might sign, but he did say that a decision is coming soon.
- NHL Sources Say via twitter: Reporting the Kings are out on Willie Mitchell. Canucks a long shot. Capitals or Sharks front runners.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks GM Mike Gillis will be looking into the the team’s captaincy between now and the beginning of training camp. Roberto Luongo is still the team’s captain (I’ve never understood that move), but Henrik Sedin could be ready to take over.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffrey Lupul has a re-occurrence of a blood infection in his back and will miss the beginning of training camp, and may not be ready for the start of the season. Lupul is taking antibotics and is not able to do any excercise for the next 4 weeks. He’ll be re-evaluted on September 20th.

Jeff Marek of CBCSports: A summary of some happenings at the World Hockey Summit. Slava Fetisov says that Russia isn’t interested in transfer agreements with the NHL but will work together to go the game worldwide. Daniel Afredsson says the larger ice surfaces creates a slower game, perfers NHL ice size. Yzerman said the lack of arenas in Florida has hurt the development of the sport.
And at the end of Day 1, many of us came away with the same question: What is this?
I’d like to say it was a discussion but it really wasn’t. Hockey personalities from across the globe, representing a myriad of different interests, had their say on their “sweet-spot” topics and then answered a couple of questions. Each session lasted no longer than 30 minutes.
- Jesse Spector (NY Daily News) via twitter: Still “nothing new” on to report on the Marc Staal – New York Rangers contract talks.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Now that Bryan Little has signed, the Atlanta Thrashers will now focus on re-signing Niclas Bergfors. GM Rick Dudley also said the team has touched base with Lee Stempniak. They may leave a roster spots open for young players like Patrice Cormier and Alexander Burmistrov.
- Neil Koepke of the Lansing State Journal: Tim Kennedy has talked to 5 or 6 teams, and would like to be signed in the next week or two.
The Fallout from the Ilya Kovalchuk trade

So by now everyone knows that Kovalckuk and Samlema were traded to the Devils for Johnny Oduya, Nicklas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and a 1st round pick.
Some people are sure to say that the Thrashers didn’t get enough for Kovalchuk, but we may never know what other teams offered. If there was a better offer that was made, I’m sure they would have took it. Now, would a better offer come in on March 3rd? We’ll never know.
Now we’ll take a look at what some people are saying.

“We felt Kovalchuk was a player who could come and fill the need that we felt we had for an explosive scorer and someone who could add a different dimension to our power play with the type of shot,” Lamoriello said. “Then it was just the case of trying to make it work some how where we could not sacrifice tomorrow.”
“The power that he brings, he is a power forward, he has hockey sense and he knows how to make other people around him better,” Lamoriello said. “You can tell by the assists he gets. I am sure every one of you has seen him play. What he brings, he can do things a lot of people can’t do.”

Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: It’s possible that the Thrashers make the playoffs without Kovalchuk. There’s a chance that the Thrashers could sign Kovalchuk on July 1, but most likely they’ve both moved on.
