Top 30 Salary Cap Numbers - Left Wingers

Listed below are the Top 30 Salary Cap Hits for Left Wingers heading into the 2010-11 NHL Season. The Guy who won’t sign … Elias hoping for Kaberle … Neal and Stars not close

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ilya Kovalchuk left Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, his agent stayed to have more talks with GM Dean Lombardi, but left last night without a deal in place. There were rumors that the talks were off yesterday, but also rumors that things were progressing. The Kings wouldn’t say anything. I can’t wait for all this to be over, I’m getting tired of reading/writing about it, sign for $8 million and be done with it.
  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: With the re-signing of Daniel Carcillo yesterday, and with the Darrol Powe still remaining, the Flyers could be about $2.75 million over the cap. Simon Gagne is most likely on his way out according to reports, the LA Kings, Maple Leafs and Rangers showing interest.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Patrick Elias throws out his 2-cents saying the Devils should trade for Tomas Kaberle. He also thinks that Petr Sykora should get a tryout with the team. He hasn’t heard from Kovalchuk, and doesn’t know his intentions.
  • Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Maple Leafs still listening to offers for Tomas Kaberle according to source in the front office.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika believes the Stars have offered James Neal a 2 year deal worth $2.5 million a season, but Neal wants more money and a longer term. He isn’t sure what the Stars want to sign Nicklas Grossman for. They’d probably like to keep Matt Niskanen at his $900,000 qualifying offer. Heika doesn’t think any will get an offer sheet, and they could let Neal sit out part of training if they have to as they have plenty of left wingers.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Blake Wheeler’s arbitration hearing is set for July 27th, but both sides would like to avoid it. They are expected to go to arbitration with recently acquired Gregory Campbell on the 22nd.
  • Tarik El-Bashir via Twitter: The Capitals and Tomas Fleischmann are “talking” according to GM George McPhee, but didn’t sound like anything was imminent.
  • Aaron Portzline via Twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson hasn’t had any contract extension talks with the Steve Mason or Jakub Voracek, but hasn’t ruled it out for later in the summer.

Nabokov heading to the KHL? Gagne not in Kings plans

5:00 PM:

  • Larry Brooks via Twitter: Patrick Elias has a no-trade clause. Bryce Salvador could be waived. Dainius Zubrus and/or Jamie Langenbrunner could be dealt. (I’m guessing this was in response to the reports that Ilya Kovalchuk could be signing with the Devils today)

The Penguins and Devils have some tough choices ahead

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Pittsburgh Penguins have a solid nucleus locked up for at least next season: Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury, Orpik and Letang. Due to their salary contraints, several players won’t be re-signed, or if they do it will be a discounted price. Their UFA list contains: Gonchar, Ponikarovsky, Guerin, Cooke, Fedotenko, Leopold, Eaton and McKee. The 36-year Gonchar is looking for a 2 year deal worth more than $5 million. If they don’t bring Gonchar back, it would create a big hole that they’d need to fill.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Everson thinks the New Jersey Devils will have to choose which left winger, Zach Parise or Ilya Kovalchuk, they’ll want to throw millions at, as they won’t be able to afford both after next season. Do they look to lock up Parise past next season, do they try to bring Kovalchuk back and let Parise go, or do they think they think they can make it with 2 high paid left wingers. I can see them locking up Parise long term, he’s turning out to be a top player in the league. Kovalchuk is probably looking for at least $8 million, Parise will be looking for something around $7 million, Elias is a $6 million cap hit, Rolston is at $5 million, and Zubrus is at $3.4 million. Paul Martin is also a UFA, and will be looking for more than his $3.833 cap hit, unless he’ll take something along the same lines to remain with the Devils.

Around the Boards: Savard’s hometown discount, Burke close to making a move? Rozsival on the Move?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Talk about your hometown discount. The Boston Bruins and Marc Savard have been talking contract extension recently and are reportedly close to 7 year, $32 million deal. That would be a nice cap hit of $4.7 million. Most expected him to sign for around $6 - 6.5 million a year average. But as we all know with most contracts nowadays, it will be front loaded and will most likely be average around $5.5 million for the first 5 years and then drop off for the last 2. Savard is 32 years old.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun:  Patience is running thin in Toronto.

“If we don’t start winning, we have two options,” said Burke, who was back in Toronto yesterday. “One, we make a trade and if I could make one that puts us in the playoffs I would. But they’re hard to make (in the salary cap world) and I think there have only been three of them around the league so far this season.

“Two, we send somebody on a one-way down and call up the kids. That’s the next step. We waive them and send them down and if we lose ‘em (on a waiver claim), we lose ‘em.”

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks thinks the NY Rangers should get rid of Michal Rozsival and his $5 million cap hit.

Deleting him by the end of the month via trade or demotion would clear an additional $3.4M of space that increases proportionately with the season.

If only it was that easy Larry.

  • Rich Chere of the Star Ledger: Devils fans and fantasy owners of Patrik Elias are happy that he’s back, but they might not be thrilled when he said “I don’t know if I’ll ever feel 100 percent this year”. He is still feeling some discomfort in his groin with his lower-body-injury.

Around the Boards: Mon. Oct. 26th

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: It will be a battle of the Jonas’s tonight in Anaheim. The J.S. Giguere out with a groin injury, Jonas Hillier will be starting, and Jonas Gustavsson will be returning from his groin injury. Can the Monster help bring the Leafs their first victory of the season.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Patrick Elias could return to practice sometime this week. Paul Martin might have a broken left arm. Jay Pandolfo dislocated his shoulder on Saturday.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Wednesday will be decision day for the Buffalo Sabres on if Tyler Myers will stay with the club or return him to junior. Odds are he’ll be staying.
  • Chric Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews and Brett Seabrook continue to miss practices/games but, “There’s a possibility they could play (Monday),” coach Joel Quenneville said. “We’re seeing some progress.”
  • David Pollack of the San Jose Mercury News: Devin Setoguchi and Ryan Vesce both missed last night’s game, and are both day-to-day.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: David Booth of the Panthers is out at least a week with a concussion after being hammered by Mike Richards, who won’t be suspended. Booth was caught admiring his pass, and did not see the shoulder check by Richards.
