Pens optimistic with Crosby … Kane may miss start of camp … Whitney still bothered by foot … Isles going young … 5 teams interested in Campoli

  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and coach Dan Bylsma spoke recently with Sidney Crosby and “expressed cautious optimism” that their captain will be ready for training camp.

“I can’t wave a wand and tell you exactly how it’s going to play out,” Bylsma said. “He’s worked hard. He’s worked harder in some areas than he has in the past. I know he’s active.”

  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Patrick Kane said the recovery process is going well. He could miss the beginning of training but will be 100% for the season opener. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kane still has a cast on from his offseason wrist surgery, and hasn’t skated in full gear yet. Targets Oct. 7th opener.
  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney is still feeling the effects from his surgically repaired foot and ankle.

“My reports suggest that,” Renney said. “My converstations with Ryan himself maybe suggest otherwise, but only to a small degree. There is some trepidation there that it’s still a little tender. He’s got a little bit of pain there. But from what I can gather, and even in talking to Ryan, it’s more of a function of scar tissue breaking down, which is actually healthy, and makes the joint healthier, so that’s the kind of thing you get in July and August when you don’t see the whites of their eyes.”

  • The Fourth Period: So with the Sabres needing to shed some money, and the Coyotes needing a center, the 2 teams could come together. Brad Boyes at $4 million has the ability to play center. Jochen Hecht and his $3.5 million contract could also be available, but is not as attractive as others.
  • Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: Islanders GM Garth Snow yesterday:

“Right now, I don’t have any plans to add another forward to our group,” Snow told The Post. “As much as we’d like to add quality veterans, we’re not going to box out our young guys.”

This statement will likely have the most affect on Alexei Yashin, as the 2 sides have linked together this summer.

  • Slava Malamud via twitter: Former Devil Sergei Brylin was interested in returning to the club, but they weren’t interested in him. He signed with Novokuznetsk of the KHL.
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins forward Craig Adams had appendectomy surgery last week and is expected to ready for the start of training camp.
  • Slava Malamud via twitter: Slava Fetisov recently said that agents are able to buy spots on the Russian national team for their clients.

Drew Doughty update … Filatov gets a promise from Senators … Isles not interested in Komisark … The Gretzky trade that didn’t happen

  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: There have been no new discussions between Drew Doughty and the LA Kings. The Kings have an offer on the table for Doughty, but this could drag on until late August/early September. Hammond points out that in 2002 Evgeni Nabokov held out, Don Meehan was his agent and Dean Lombardi was the GM of the Sharks. GM Lombardi said yesterday,

“I think it’s fair to say that in the last conversation, we set the parameters, as to where we feel his contract should be. We talked about a number of scenarios, and I guess now it’s their move. They never really responded.”

  • E.J. Hradek of NHL.com: Answering readers questions. Hradek thinks the Wings (and many others) would be interested in adding Shea Weber even if Nicklas Lidstrom continues to play. Weber will be a RFA after next season if he doesn’t sign a long-term deal but the team won’t be able to choose the team-elected arbitration. Therefore teams could sign him to an offer sheet. Hradek says that there is a difference in both term and dollars for Drew Doughty and the LA Kings. He points out that when there is no urgency for a deal to get done, things have a tendency to move more slowly.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Senators winger Nikita Filatov tells the SovSport that he was promised a 1st or 2nd line spot and power play time.
  • BD Gallof via twitter: The Islanders won’t likely be making a defenseman deal unless it falls into their lap. There is no interest in Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: The other day Brian Burke was on TSN Radio and said that the Canucks were in talks to acquire Wayne Gretzky from the Oilers 23 years ago. The Oilers wanted 1st round picks, $18 million, Greg Adams and another player.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Kansas City is still hoping to land an NHL franchise. KC has already hosted 3 exhibition games and will be hosting the Penguins and Kings on Sept. 27th.

“The NHL was involved in the development of the Sprint Center and made it clear it’s a very viable place as the home for an NHL team,” said Michael Roth, spokesman for the Anschutz Entertainment Group, which operates the rink for the city. “Kansas City has embraced hockey and the Sprint Center puts on a good show. We continue to look for the right opportunity (to further pursue a team).”

Crosby skates … Kane out 6-8 weeks … Campoli done with ‘Hawks … Nothing going on with Parise’s contract … Larsson signs with Devils

  • Larry Fine in the Globe and Mail: Sidney Crosby has begun on-ice workouts. Crosby has been training in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s still unknown if he’ll be ready for training camp, and he hasn’t been given clearance by doctors for physical contact.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Kane will require surgery on his left wrist. He had tests on his wrist during the playoffs, but it didn’t reveal a fracture. Kane is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks.

“I thought it was getting better, but it’s in an area where no blood can get to the fracture and something I’m going to have fixed for later down the road,” said Kane, who wore a brace. “It’s one of those things, I fix it out now [and] it’s not going to affect me when the season comes.

The Blackhawks have decided to walk away from RFA Chris Campoli, who has an arbitration hearing on August 3rd.

“It was apparent from the beginning that their salary demands were not in concert with where we see him fitting in our team,” Bowman said. “The dollar [amount] that they’re looking for is not agreeable with our mixture. If we don’t trade him, then he will become an unrestricted free agent.”

The Blackshawks have signed defenseman Sami Lepisto to a one year deal. They also re-signed Micheal Frolik to a 3 year, $7 million deal.

  • Adam Jahns via twitter: GM Bowman on Campoli: “We went back and forth and made him our best offer and it didn’t work for them.”
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames have re-signed Brendan Morrison to a 1 year deal worth $850,000 is base salary and up to $400,000 in bonuses. The Flames are now close to the cap, and have too many forwards. They may look at stashing someone in the minors. The best case scenario for the Flames would be for another team to believe in Niklas Hagman or Matt Stajan and would send a draft pick back.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Yesterday morning Zach Parise sent Gulitti an email saying that nothing was going on regarding his contract.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Adam Larsson signed a 3 year entry-level contract with the NJ Devils. The deal does not include any performance bonuses. Larsson made the decision to sign a deal without performance bonuses, he did get a signing bonus. Lamorielllo on Larsson: “That’s a decision the player made to be part of the Devils and not to be any different than anyone else in that locker room.” Lamoriello added that they and Larsson expect him to play in either the NHL or AHL next season. His deal carries a $925,000 cap hit.

Carlson, Gagne and Kubina hurt last night … Flyers roster notes … Dallas Stars sale progressing

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals rookie defenseman John Carlson collided with Nate Thompson late in the 2nd period. He lasted about 36 seconds on 2 very short shifts in the 3rd before leaving for good. He’ll be listed as day-to-day, and Bruce Boudreau is hoping he’ll be able to go on Sunday.
  • Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times: Lightning forward Simon Gagne likely suffered a concussion in the 1st period after his head slammed against the ice after a Scott Hannon hit. Gagne has a history of concussions. Defenseman Pavel Kubina also left the game. His head banged off the glass after taking a Jason Chimera hit, who received a roughing penalty.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers will likely go with 6 defense in Game 1 (had been going with 7 due to the uncertainty of Chris Pronger’s hand). Defenseman Danny Syvret will likely be a healthy scratch. Jody Shelley or rookie Zac Rinaldo will be on the 4th line. Jeff Carter is doubtful for the first 2 games of the series. Andreas Nodl practiced but won’t go in Game 1. Sergei Bobrovsky will backup Brian Boucher as Michael Leighton still has a sore back.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Panthers have had some contract discussions with 2010 1st round draft pick, Erik Gudbranson, “but there’s no deadline. We don’t have to have him signed right now. There are more pressing issues.” They’ve also had one “general” discussion with Tomas Vokoun people, so there is chance that he may not leave by free agency.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: There is a small group of Blackhawk fans who think they should trade Patrick Kane. (um…okay…yeah….do these people know anything about hockey? This makes absolutely no sense and isn’t going to happen. It doesn’t deserve to be even posted, but I did it anyways as it’s pretty funny.)
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Two sources confirmed that Tom Gaglardi is in the 30-day negotiation window to purchase the Dallas Stars. Gaglardi’s offer is “significantly” better than the other offers. If everything goes to plan, the deal could be done by June. This could be helpful in giving the Stars an opportunity to have some serious negotiations with Brad Richards (though Richards may want to test the free agent market anyways). It would also allow them to get their new head coach in place. Possible candidates are Texas Stars coach Glen Gulutzan or Canadiens assistand coach Kirk Muller (in yesterday’s post and in that article we/they said that Kirk Muller will likely get the job).

Bogosian not happy in Atlanta … Bruins looking at 9 Dmen … Kovalev days in OTT could be numbered … Arnott undecided about waiving no trade

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Though he hasn’t officially asked for a trade, it’s been noted that Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian isn’t happy in Atlanta and may like a change of scenery by next year.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Multiple reports are saying the Maple Leafs and Bruins are discussing a Tomas Kaberle trade. This will likely be the last chance Burke has to get an asset back for Kaberle as it’s unlikely he would re-sign with the Leafs.
  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have added some depth with 3rd liner Chris Kelly, should now turn their focus to adding a much needed defenseman. The Tomas Kaberle rumors are running rampant. “Tomas Kaberle has not waived his no-trade clause concerning Boston,” Burke said. GM Peter Chiarelli said they have a list of 9 defenseman.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie could only come up with 7 of 9 defenseman that the Boston Bruins could be interested in: Tomas Kaberle, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Brewer, Bryan McCabe, Chris Phillips, Ed Jovanovski, Zach Bogosian.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks that if the Dallas Stars continue to drop in the standings they have to trade Brad Richards (if his head injury is minor).
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards didn’t fly with the team and will not play tonight against Calgary. Coach Marc Crawford said he’ll be re-evaluated today, and could join the team before Saturday’s game.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Senators GM Bryan Murray said this morning that he hope to make “one or two more” trades and there is nothing new on the Chris Phillips front.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Alex Kovalev realizes that his days as an Ottawa Senator could be coming to an end and he’s not letting the rumors bother him. “I’ve been around for a long time, I’ve been traded a few times, so it’s not new for me,” Kovalev said of the constant trade speculation surrounding himself and several teammates. “The job is still the same, to be a hockey player and help whatever team (you’re) playing for.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Jason Arnott is still pondering about waiving his no-trade clause. He wants to play in the playoffs this year, but the Devils are on quite the run and may feel they have a shot if it continues. Arnott has talked to Lamoriello ‘in theory’ about waiving it, with the Penguins, Canadiens, and Capitals rumored to be interested.

“We’ve still got a long way to go and I think it will be a little more clear more towards the deadline,” he told me today. “If we win every game from now until the deadline, it’s going to be a real tough decision because then I’ve got to gamble on whether we’re going to win out, win the rest of the season or try to get on a playoff team. As it gets closer, it will become more clear and we’ll see what we do.”

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Despite all their injuries to their blueline, McKenzie doesn’t think the Canucks are in the market for a defenseman.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: With the acquisition of Kris Versteeg, look for the Flyers to shop either Daniel Carcillo or Jody Shelley.
  • Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: The Panthers could look to move Cory Stillman, he’d like to stay but realizes a trade could happen. “There’s always an uneasy feeling that it’s happened once before, it could happen again,’’ said Stillman, who has eight 20-plus goal seasons. “My goal coming here almost three years ago was to help put the team in a playoff spot with a chance to win.
  • Capgeek.com: Dustin Byfuglien 5 year, $26 million contract extension carries a $5.2 million cap hit. He was making $3 million this year. Capgeek is showing that he has yearly salaries of $4.25 million, $4.25 million, $5.75 million, $5.75 million, and $6 million.
  • Brian Hamilton of Chicago Breaking Sports: Patrick Kane missed another practice yesterday with an illness but coach Joel Quenneville is hopeful that he’ll be in the lineup tonight against the Wild. Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks.

Rain in forecast for Winter Classic … Spezza out indefinitely … Pair of Preds to IR, Tootoo to rehab … Kane back tonight?

  • Bob Cohn of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: This year’s Penguins-Capitals Winter Classic could be even more interesting as rain could be in the forecast. A little bit of rain can be tolerated but if it’s heavy enough to disrupt the 1 pm start, the opening faceoff could be pushed back to 8 pm at the latest. It could also reach a high of 50 degrees.
  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza will be out indefinitely with an injured right shoulder. His shoulder is swollen enough that they don’t know the full extent of the injury and if he’ll need surgery.

“It’s not going to be immediate,” he said. “It’s going to be a while. I’ve never hurt my shoulder before, so there’s kind of a grey area right now. Still a lot of swelling and stuff. Just kind of take it day-by-day and see, but it’s not going to be any time soon.

“It seems like it’s going to be fine without surgery. But it just happened, it’s pretty fresh.”

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire was told to stay of skates until yesterday as he deals with a lower body injury, when he’ll return to the lineup is not known. The Senators could be interested in Jamie Langenbrunner, and the Devils are looking for defenseman, which the Senators have some they could be willing to move.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Jordan Tootoo voluntarily put himself in a substance abuse facility. Tootoo has full support from the team and organization, no time frame on his return is known.
  • Jack McCarthy of the Chicago Tribune: Despite just being put on the IR (retroactive), Patrick Kane could be back in the Blackhawks lineup tonight versus the Blues. Marty Turco will get his 2nd straight start as Corey Crawford continues to recover from the flu.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators forward Steve Sullivan will be out 10-14 days with a lower body injury, and has been placed on the IR. Martin Erat was also placed on IR with a upper body injury. David Legwand is a possibility for tonight’s game. He’s only been able to play 2 periods since Nov. 18th.
  • TSN: P.K. Subban battled with Tomas Plekanec during practice before getting into an argument with Maxim Lapierre, Roman Hamrlik had to break it up.  Subban downplayed the incident, “It’s practice, it’s battling. It’s tough,” Subban told reporters following practice. “When you’re doing three-on-two drills and three-on-three, there is going to be chippy battles in front of the net. You’ve just got to work through it. It was a good practice today.”
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Marco Sturm continues to see limited playing time and no special teams ice time as the Kings are slowing working him back in. “I don’t know about one of these games coming up. “Kings Coach Terry Murray said when the prospect of Sturm getting some power-play time was raised this morning. “I think it’ll be further down the road than that unless he just lights it up here tonight and starts putting some pucks in the net.”

Kane replaces Hossa on IR … Burke owes Wilson a trade? Spezza hurts arm … Cleary fractures foot

  • The Globe and Mail: Marian Hossa was activated from IR yesterday and Patrick Kane was placed on IR. Kane has been out since Dec. 5th with an ankle injury. Hannu Toivonen was recalled by the team.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza left last night’s game in the 2nd period holding his arm after being hit by Kris Letang. A better update will be come today.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings have lost Daniel Cleary for at least a month after his ankle was fracture after being hit by a Brad Stuart shot. Cleary leads the Wings with 16 goals. The Wings are also without Pavel Datsyuk, recalled Jan Mursak.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marian Gaborik will be back in the lineup for the Rangers tonight, and the Rangers also recalled Mats Zuccarello. Gaborik practiced with Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan. Michael Del Zotto will likely be out as he recovers from the flu.
  • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: The NHL holiday roster freeze ends Monday, and Brian Burke continues to look for a trade to shake up his roster. “It’s believed by team sources that Burke “owes” Wilson at least a trade to shake up the underachieving roster up and give the coach an improved opportunity to rescue the team’s badly fading playoff hopes.”
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Teams are following the NJ Devils closely, and many are interested in Jamie Langenbrunner and his no-trade clause. The Sharks, Red Wings, and Stars (as well as most other top teams) could be interested. If Rolston is put on re-entry waivers he’s likely to get picked up. Jason Arnott is pondering if he’d waive his no-trade clause if asked.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Teams are calling the Atlanta Thrashers about Niclas Bergfors (Maple Leafs likely one of the teams) but GM Dudley doesn’t want to give him away for nothing.
  • TSN: Peter Forsberg’s attempted comeback is now over (it’s Christmas not Ground Hog day right?). Markus Naslund, MODO’s GM said “I’ve had a talk with him today and he simply says that it does not feel good enough for him to build on this.”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Avalanche are not “moving full steam” to re-sign Craig Anderson. Anderson was excellent last season, but he’s battled injuries and has only been average. LA Kings prospect Brayden Schenn will likely be traded by Portland (WHL) to either Saskatoon or Portland. Sheldon Souray has 1 goal on 50 shots in 15 games.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators and Chris Phillips haven’t discussed a new contract for the upcoming UFA. Preliminary discussions took part at the beginning of the season, but not much since then.

Lamoriello on Brodeur trade rumors, “He’s not going anywhere.” … Blackhawks injury updates … Starting goalies

  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur, “I want to stay. I’ve been fortunate to play on some great teams here. I”m not going to quit now.” …. On if he’d waive his no-trade if Devils could get good value for him to rebuild, “I’ll cross that bridge if that happens. It’s a possibility. We’re not all untouchables. It could be a possibility. But personally I don’t want to go anywhere. I like it here. I like playing for this organization and I guarantee you that we won’t have two seasons of that in a row.”
  • Brian Hedger of NHL.com: Marian Hossa and Viktor Stalberg took part in full practice yesterday. Patrick Kane didn’t skate as he re-aggravate his lower body injury on the weekend. Hossa could be back after Christmas according to coach Joel Quennville. Quennville on Kane, “I still think he’s able to do a lot off the ice,” “I think his conditioning is still going to be right for game conditions. It’s just a matter (of) … until he feels good on the ice. He’s not too far away either.”
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Jason Arnott on asking for trade,

“Like go to a playoff team? I’ve thought about it,” Arnott told The Post yesterday, before the Devils lost their ninth straight road game, 5-1 to the Capitals. “We’re not quitters. Mathematically, we’re not out of it yet. When I decided to come here, the chance I wanted was to be in contention to win this year. It just hasn’t gone that way.

“I don’t know. We’ll see later on. I’ve thought about it, no question. Right now, I still want to see if we can turn this thing around and make the playoffs.”

  • Steve Zipay via twitter: Mats Zuccarello has been called up by the New York Rangers after scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists in 32 games in the AHL.
  • Joshua Cooper via twitter: Lindback will start tonight for the Predators, Rinne will go tomorrow. Crawford will start for the Blackhawks tonight. Kane, Hossa and Stalberg are out.
  • Dan Murphy via twitter: Cory Schneider will start for the Canucks tomorrow. Andrew Alberts should be back in the lineup.

  • Tim Panaccio via twitter: Chris Pronger will miss 4-6 weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone is his right foot.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Alexander Semin won’t travel with the team to Boston, but could meet them in Ottawa according to Bruce Boudreau. Scott Hannan and Tyler Sloan are both game-time decisions, both are sick.
  • Adrian Dater via twitter: Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk won’t be in the lineup for the Avalanche tonight. Stastny skated for a bit today but left early.
  • Allen Panzeri via twitter: Pascal Leclaire will be in net for the Senators tonight against the Avalanche. Matt Carkner is a game-time decision with an ankle cut.

Rolston clears waivers, has never been asked to waive no-trade … Kane returns Friday? Seguin a healthy scratch? Roster notes and Starting goalies

  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Patrick Kane is close to returning, “Friday is a possibility. I just have to see how I am (Thursday) in practice and Friday in the pregame skate.” Tim Sassone via twitter: David Bolland is likely in the lineup for the Blackhawks tonight. Fernando Pisani won’t be in the lineup.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Rolston cleared waivers and will be in the lineup for the NJ Devils tonight. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston said he’s never been asked to waive his no-trade clause. He was asked if he would waive it, responded, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it”. Rolston expects to be in the lineup tonight.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Looks like Tuukka Rask will start tonight for the Bruins against the Sabres. Tim Thomas likely to start against the Canadiens.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It doesn’t look like Senators GM Bryan Murray will be able to make a trade before the NHL holiday roster freeze (Sunday the 19th). The Senators want to add a top 6 forward and a rugged dman. Teams are looking young players in return for older, expensive underachievers, which is why it’s unlikely he’ll get something done (I’m thinking Murray will join this train of thought if he looks to deal Alexei Kovalev).

“We talk about trades and we talk to other managers, but that’s very difficult,” said Murray. “As I talk to different teams, even teams that want to make something happen, I have a tough time. Getting equal value at equal money is difficult.”

Blues dangling D for Scoring, also inquiring about Bergeron … No contract talks yet for Parise … Blues look into Kovalev … Laperriere clears room for Leighton

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The St. Louis Blues continue to look for scoring help and could be moving out a defenseman. The Blues have also inquired about Marc-Andre Bergeron, and could bring in the power play specialist if they move a Dman out.
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergeron Record: Zach Parise has shed is immobilizing leg cast that he’s had on for 6 weeks. It will still be some time before he’s able to begin skating. Early February is when he might be able to return. The Devils have yet to approach Parise about a new contract.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Blues have looked into Senators forward Alexei Kovalev, and are not the only team. Ottawa isn’t looking for a contract that goes beyond this year. Kovalev has a no-movement clause. Still no word on when David Perron could return from his concussion. Tim Kennedy has been given permission to seek a trade by Glen Sather. The Penguins will be looking to sign Mark Letestu to an extension soon. Mike Modano is still hoping to return in March, but there is no guarantee, and the Red Wings may have concerns on the shape he’ll be in as he didn’t arrive at training camp in great shape.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Dupont wonders if teams will call Panthers GM Dale Tallon about Erik Gudbranson. Florida was unable to come to terms with him before this season. Teams, such as the Bruins, may offer a roster player and swapping first round picks. Gudbranson isn’t going anywhere in my opinion.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Luke Schenn appears to be fine after taking a puck on the “unpadded part of the inside of his knee.” Mike Komisarek took part in the full practice and could play tonight if Ron Wilson chooses to insert him back in. Mike Brown will be out at least another 2 weeks.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: The Philadelphia Flyers placed Ian Laperriere on LTIR yesterday. Laperriere hasn’t played a game this season due to post-concussion symptoms. Matt Walker could be added to the IR as he was injured over the weekend. The Flyers had about $550,000 in cap space as of yesterday, and by placing Laperriere’s $1.166 million on LTIR, they’ll be able to add Michael Leighton’s $1.55 cap hit.
  • Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres forward Drew Stafford practiced yesterday and could go on Wednesday night versus the Bruins.

Kane out 3 weeks … Poni to return Thursday, Mitchell Close … Phanuef could return Saturday … Horcoff out 8 weeks?

  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Kane will be out the Chicago Blackhawks lineup for about 3 weeks with a sprained ankle. “We’re going to leave it as a lower body (injury), but I think you can speculate what it is. Certainly that’s the extent of it and he’s progressing right now.”
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If the Stars decide to move Brad Richards at the trade deadline “it’s only because (1) they weren’t able to sign him to an extension and (2) they’re offered the kind of deal that sets them up “for the next five years.” The Sharks continue to look for a top 4 defenseman. If Devils coach John MacLean can’t find a way to get Ilya Kovalchuk scoring (5 goals in 26 games), they should find someone who can (my fantasy team would appreciate this as well).
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers center Shawn Horcoff felt his knee ‘pop’ after colliding with Corey Perry. Coach Tom Renney guesses he could be out 8 weeks. Horcoff will have an MRI done today, he does have a damaged MCL. They could call up one of Linus Omark, Liam Reddox or Ryan O’Marra.
  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: LA Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell is getting closer to returning, as he practiced yesterday without his wrist brace. Mitchell will be examined on Thursday and will look to get clearance. Ponikarovsky was pronounced ready to return by Terry Murray and will be on the left side of Michal Handzus and Wayne Simmons.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: Dion Phaneuf practiced with the Maple Leafs yesterday and could return on Saturday for their game against the Canadiens.

Blues looking for scoring … Kane out weeks … Samuelsson has ‘mild’ concussion … What the Stars may want from the Rangers for Richards

  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong has been looking to make a trade, even before Andy MacDonald suffered his upper body injury. The Blues are missing 3 of their top 6 forwards. ”I would say over the last couple of weeks, I’ve touched base with all the teams to find out what they’re thinking, what’s going on,” Armstrong said. “At this point, I know some things I’d like to accomplish, and if we can find a willing partner, then I think we’ll have to explore some changes. We’re not getting the results we need to right now and when that happens, potential changes can come.” The Blues will be looking for a scoring forward, and will likely have to move a defenseman.  Eric Brewer and Barret Jackman have no trade clauses, and teams may target Erik Johnson, Alex Pietrangelo and Ian Cole.
  • Iain MacIntrye of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson will be out at least a week with a ‘mild’ concussion. Mason Raymond returned practiced after missing a game with the flu.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers have been granted permission by the NHL for Michael Leighton to have an extended AHL rehab stint for 2 more games. The Flyers won’t have to make a roster decision for another week.
  • Mike Hieka of the Dallas Morning News: If the Dallas Stars were to trade Brad Richards to the NY Rangers, they’ll likely target centerman or defenseman. The Rangers have Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal or Dan Girardi on the point, and centers Derek Stepan and Brandon Dubinsky.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Drew Stafford has missed 12 of the last 13 games with a shoulder injury. He played Friday but left after taking a hit. He briefly skated yesterday but wasn’t able to go last night.  Tim Connolly has missed 6 games with a groin injury.

Phaneuf cleared to return … Kane injured … Seguin staying with Bruins … Brodeur almost ready

  • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Dion Phaneuf has been cleared to return to the Maple Leafs, and will accompany the team to Washington and Pittsburgh. He took part in his first full practice since his injury. It’s not known yet which game he’ll make his return, December 16th against Calgary has been a game he’s been focused on. When Phaneuf returns, the Leafs will have some decisions to make on the blueline, as they have plenty of NHL calibre defenseman.

  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Kane only last 23 seconds yesterday before leaving the after falling awkwardly into the boards. “We’ll know more (Monday) exactly where we’re at,” Quenneville said. “It’s tough to speculate and I don’t want to go there right now, but it’s not real serious. I’ll go to that extent.”

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The salary cap could go up $2.1 million from the current $59.4 million if the players exercise the 5% inflator clause. At the Board of Governors meetings (starting today) there will be plenty of talk on ownership. Harley Hotchkiss is looking to sell is 22% stake in the Calgary Flames to the other owners. Potential Phoenix Coyotes owner, Matthew Hulsizer, is expected meet with the committee. They’ll likely also talk about the ownership of Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Thrashers could potential move to Winnipeg or Quebec City.

  • Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette: Andrei Markov will be a UFA after this season, has he worn a Canadiens jersey for the last time? Will they give him big money despite only playing 52 games and have 2 major knee surgeries. The Canadiens have plenty of time to figure out if need to find a replacement for him, trade deadline day is February 28th.

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has told Tyler Seguin that he’ll remain with the club and won’t be going to the World Jurior Championships later this month.

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers continue to have $4.125 million dollars as healthy scratches, Todd White and Matt Gilroy. The longer they carry them, the more salary counts against their cap, which may make it more difficult to add a large salary, say a Brad Richards. Sather doesn’t want to send top young assets for Richards, since he could possibly get him for free on July 1st.

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher could be put on waivers once the Leighton’s conditioning stint is over. The Peguins “emphatically say” they are not going to trade Evgeni Malkin for wingers for Sidney Crosby.

Kane on the Left Wing? Can Flyers sign both Carter and Leino? Giggy not happy with Leafs … Ron Wilson Audio

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Chicago Blackhawks continue to tweak their lines. At practice yesterday Patrick Kane was on the left side (usually RWer), with David Bolland at center and Marian Hossa on the right side. This line probably won’t be together tonight as Bolland is doubtful with an upper-body injury.
  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: After the Claude Giroux signing, the Philadelphia Flyers have almost $53 million committed to 18 players next season. Flyers potential UFAs are: Ville Leino, Nik Zherdev, Sean O’Donnell and Brian Boucher. Potential RFAs are:  Jeff Carter, Dan Carcillo, Darroll Powe and Andreas Nodl. The Flyers would like to re-sign Ville Leino and Jeff Carter but may not be able to fit both in under cap. The longer they are not able to sign either, the more likely that one could be moved at the trade deadline. Holmgren, “I don’t think (Giroux’s signing) affects anything we’re going to try to do moving forward,” Holmgren said. “I’m not going to comment on anything going on, but I’d like to keep our team together as best we can, and we’ll continue to try to do that.”
  • Jeff Z. Klein of the NY Times: Fans will vote for the starting 6 all-stars. The captains will then pick the remaining players in a live televised event. Wow, the all-star game will be so exciting now. The GMs shot down Dale Tallon’s ‘coaches challenge’. The GMs are happy with how the players are adapting to the blindside rule.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: JS Giguere wasn’t too happy with the Leafs effort last night.

“We didn’t compete,” Giguere said. “You knew they were going to be ready, they got beat pretty bad the last game on the road … You’ve got to be aware of these things. I don’t know. I’m a bit lost. I don’t know what to say. We’re just going to have to regroup.” ….

“I don’t understand why it’s not happening. There’s nothing given in this league. It’s a tough league to win in, especially on the road. You need to show up ready. Things might not go your way, that’s understandable, and you’re not going to win them all but after you lose a few in a row like that, you need to start showing something.

“Tonight we didn’t even have a chance.”

Around the Boards: Lecavalier to LA? Kane Hurt? Some players returning soon

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Thinks the Los Angeles Kings are the best suitor for Vincent Lecavalier. He’d be an excellent compliment to Anze Kopitar, they have the cap space, and plenty of young players.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Hawks coach Joel Quenneville thinks that Patrick Kane may not miss any time. Kane banged his head off of the ice in the first period, and did not return.
  • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Michael Nylander has had some trouble getting a team in the KHL (or anywhere else in Europe and the NHL) too him, now finds himself on his way to Grand Rapids Michigan. He’ll suit up for the AHL club, collecting his $5.5 million salary ($4.875 cap hit). The Capitals will continue to pay his salary, but the cap number will come off the books.
  • Michael Obernauer of the NY Daily News: Brandon Dubinsky could return to the New York Rangers lineup tonight versus Atlanta. Since scoring ability is something the Rangers have lacked since he got hurt.
  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Milan Lucic could return to ice this week. He’s been out 3 weeks so far with a high ankle sprain.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: After firing their coach, and going 2-10 in their last 12, and losing their #1 goalie, the Flyers are still in trouble. Rumors are starting to circulate that they are looking deal, but new coach, Peter laviolette doesn’t want that to happen yet.

Keith, Kane and Toews Signing on Thursday

According to TSN and Chicago Now, the Chicago Blackhawks will announce the signings of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith. Kane and Toews receiving 5 year extensions, with Keith signing a 13 year deal. Press conference called for 2:00 pm CST.

As everyone knows, the ‘tagging’ rule applies here, and the ‘Hawks will have to cut some salary cap room. Brent Sopel and Cam Barker are 2 names that have appeared over the weeks as to players who could be moved. Last week the Leafs and ‘Hawks were rumored on a Sopel and a 2nd round pick for Jiri Tlusty.

The ‘Tagging’ Rule facing the Chicago Blackhawks

So it’s been reported here and everywhere that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (5 years) and Duncan Keith (up to 13 years) are about to re-sign with the Blackhawks. There has been so much talk about the inevitable signings and cap issues that the Blackhawks have, that I didn’t really want to bring them up again. Pretty much every sports site and blog dating back to last July have touched on their issues on numerous instances (from mynhltraderumors – Capoligist needed in Chicago July 8th, and Hossa’s Contract Investigation July 31st). We all know that they are going to have to make a trade or 2 to free up cap room for next season, and that Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet are 2 contracts that they’d probably like to remove, rather than a Patrick Sharp or Kris Versteeg.

But why am I writing about them then? This blame lies with Tab Bamford of the BleacherReport commenting on an ESPN article. Before the Blackhawks are able to officially sign the big 3, they must makes some moves that effects next years salary cap, the ‘Tagging’ rule.

“Tagging” is a rule in the CBA that prohibits a team from having more money committed to the following season than the current year’s salary cap. Essentially, if this year’s salary cap is roughly $56 million, the Hawks wouldn’t be allowed to have the projected $61 million committed to next year’s payroll after these three deals were completed.

I had never heard of this rule before, and it raises a few questions. Were the ‘Hawks aware of this ‘tagging’ rule? Will the Hawks’ become more active in trying to dump salary so they can announce the 3 signings asap, or will they hold on to the signed contracts and file them later on in the season? At what cost will the ‘Hawks go to, to move out salary (packaging a contract and a good draft pick/prospect for a lower salary)?
