Injury Updates … Is Tampa Right for Yzerman? Plenty of Free Agents in Washington
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL Rumors on May 2nd, 2010
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Andre Markov returned to Montreal after game 1. He sustained a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. He will not require surgery.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a damaged tendon on the top of his foot.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Patrick Marleau is expected back in the line for game 2 after missing game 1 with the flu. He returned to the ice yesterday, but was skating with Torrey Mitchell and Manny Malhotra. Logan Couture moved up with Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley.
- Corey Masisak of CSN: The Washington Capitals have 11 players that are free agents this year. Nicklas Backstrom is looking to sign a long term extension with the club, and will probably be in the $7 million range. They also have 20 goal scorers, Eric Fehr and Tomas Fleischmann, who are both RFAs and will require a nice raise. Jose Theodore is a UFA and though there is a chance he’ll be back at a reduced salary (his contract was 2 year, $9 million), I don’t see that happening. Of the 4 players acquired at the deadline (Eric Belanger, Joe Corvo, Scott Walker and Milan Jurcina), probably only Belanger would be re-signed. Young Dmen, John Carlson and Karl Alzner, are looking like they are ready to be full time NHL defenseman.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Is Tampa Bay the right situtation for Steve Yzerman? “I’m very lucky and happy to have a position with the Red Wings,” Yzerman told ESPN.com. “I would love to run a team one day and realize I will have to leave here to do that. But the situation has to be right, for me and my family. Believe it or not, being a part of this organization and living in Detroit is something I cherish. “[But] if the right opportunity presents itself, I would definitely consider it.”
Marleau Should be Good for Game 2 … Predators, Devils, Senators, and Red Wings Off-Season Decisions
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 1st, 2010
- Gary Peterson of the San Jose Mercury News: Surprise game 1 scratch, Patrick Marleau, should be feeling better, and ready to return for game 2 on Sunday. Marleau was taken out of the line just before game one with ‘flu-like’ symptoms.
- Iaian MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks leading playoff scorer, Mikael Samuelsson, missed practiced yesterday with a sore back, but it’s not expected to keep him out of the line up for game 1.
- John Glennon of the Tennessean: Predators forward JP Dumont had his ice cut this season by 2:43, which isn’t sitting well with Dumont, and he wants to talk to coach Barry Trotz about it. If Dumont leaves the meeting unhappy, it may lead to him willing to waive his no-movement clause. GM David Poile thinks he has a reasonable chance to re-sign defenseman Dan Hamhuis. They spoke last week, and plan to do so again in the near future. Denis Grebeshkov future with the club may hinge on how the Hamhuis pans out. Dan Ellis most likely won’t be back with the Predators, as he’s going to see what the open market brings him.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The Devils will have to decide soon if they are going to send offers to Paul Martin and Ilya Kovalchuk. Because the Devils lost in the 1st round, they won’t make any money this season, but that won’t play a part in their (owers and Lou’s) decision to bring back Martin and Kovalchuk or not. The coaching search will take more shape during the next couple weeks. I’m sure they’ll want to have someone in place before the draft in June.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: GM Bryan Murray and coach Cory Clouston received votes of confidence from Ottawa Senators owner, Eugene Melnyk. Melnyk will be sitting down with both for reviews, and thinks some tinkering might need to be done with the team. When asked about Jason Spezza and his no-trade clause that kicks in on July 1st, the decision on how to precede with that will be in the hands of Murray. The Sens will spend up to the salary cap next season which is rumored to be slightly above this seasons $56.7 million. They already have $49 million committed for 17 players. Anton Volchenkov turned down a 5 year, $20 million contract before the Olympics, and is looking for something between $4.5-5 million a season. The Senators didn’t make any money this season, they needed to reach the second round to do so.
- George Malik of MLive: Off-season decisions involving the Detroit Red Wings … Trying to re-sign Nicklas Lidstrom, hopefully at a discount. Re-signing UFAs Tomas Holmstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, and Andreas Lilja. Deciding if they want to bring back any of (not likely); Kirk maltby, Jason Williams, Brett Lebda, Brad May andn Doug Janik. Attempting to re-sign; Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller, Patrick Eaves, Darren Helm, Daniel Larsson, Sergei Kolosov, and Mattias Ritola. Do they send qualifying offers to Derek Meech, Ville Leino, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Johan Ryno?
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Steve Yzerman has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to become the Lightning’s next GM, but Scotty Bowman would be surprised if he’d leave the Red Wings organization. Yzerman was been with the Wings for 27 years, and Bowman thinks he could be moving up the organization.
Salary Cap Going Up? Marleau to LA? Hudler Returing to Red Wings
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 18th, 2010
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: It appears that the NHL salary cap could be going up next season. A ‘team source’ told Simmons next year’s cap will be close to $59 million, League officials say it’ll be closer to $57. Either way, I’m glad it’s not in $50-51 million range that they talked about earlier in the season.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen doesn’t think (myself as well) that any NHL team will offer Ilya Kovalchuk the $10 million that Atlanta was offering. He thinks there will be about 3 or 4 teams that will offer him a long term, big numbered contract, maybe in the $8 million range. If the Sharks choke again in the playoffs, will they let Patrick Marleau walk at the end of the season? The Kings have been in the market for adding a big name scorer, Marleau is one of the top free agents this year, and has a history the Kings GM Dean Lombardi (former Sharks GM).
- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo Sports, via twitter: Dynamo Moscow are releasing Jiri Hudler, paving the way for his Detroit Red Wings return.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild back-up goalie, Josh Harding, had successful hip surgery this past week, and may now hope to land the Wild a center this summer. GM Chuck Fletcher doesn’t think the surgery will lessen his chances of moving him.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Both Jarome Iginla and Martin St. Louis could find themselves on the trade block this summer. Iginla (33) has 3 years left at $7 million, St. Louis (35) has 1 year at $4 million ($5.25 cap hit). Boston might have trouble fitting either salary in. Dupont thinks Iginla could be huge deal for Toronto, who would likely have to send at least Mikhail Grabovski and Kaberle the other way.
Garrioch and LeBrun have some NHL Trade Rumors for you
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on January 24th, 2010
- Hockey Night in Canada ‘Hotstove’ video
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- The Canucks might be one of several teams to have an interest in Paul Kariya.
- The Thrashers will take another run at re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flames are said to have inquired about him. This will come down to the deadline, with at least 6 teams involved; Flames Capitals, Blackhawks, Bruins, Kings and Rangers.
- The Leafs have inquired about Kovalchuk, but that may not mean much. “Burke likes to stick his nose into everything,” said one Eastern Conference-based player. “If he did that, it’s so he can tell everybody that he looked into the possibility.”
- Unless he takes less than the $6.3 million he making this season, Patrick Marleau may not be back with the Sharks next year, and the Kings might be interested.
- The Lightning have once again shot down rumors that they’ve talked to the Rangers about Vinny Lecavalier.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Tampa Bay owner, Oren Koules, is shooting down the Lecavalier to the Rangers rumors. Of note, Vinny is 15 in scoring before Saturday’s play.
- The Maple Leafs have let it be known that not only will they trade players for picks/prospects, they’ll also take on contracts for picks/prospects.
- Hurricanes Dman, Joni Pitkanen, is drawing a lot interest even though he still has another year on his contract at $4.5 million.
- The Coyotes are looking to add some scoring, without taking on much salary.
- The Islanders will move Martin Biron for a draft pick, defenseman or a left winger
- Eric Francis from Canoe Slam! Sports: Flames GM Darryl Sutter said that he has “no intentions of breaking any of it up.” He has been unhappy with the play of the team, and many of their top players aren’t playing like top players. Sutter will be patient with the team for now.
Around the Boards – Oct. 5th

The NHLPA is following in the NHL footsteps in having a negative situation surrounding it’s association. The NHLPA’s firing of Paul Kelly continues to be in the news.
The Florida Panthers have signed center Dominic Moore to a 1 year, $1.1 million deal. File this one under the category “Damn, I blew that one”. Moore was reportedly offered a contract by the Maple Leafs last season worth around $4-5 million for 2 years, Moore thought he was worth more. Moore recorded 41 points in 63 games with the Leafs and Sabres. Moore saw plenty of ice time with Leafs which led to his exaggerated stats, he struggled in Buffalo. Burke stole a 2nd round pick for him at the deadline.
So after 3 days to open the 2009-10 NHL season, the geniuses behind the NHL scheduling don’t schedule a game for Sunday night, only 2 for Monday. I don’t get it.
Toews and Kane may be split up, for the time being at least. Kane was lined up with Dave Bolland and Dustin Byfuglien in Finland. Toews, Sharp and Versteeg makes up a solid line.
Ron Wilson has told Vesa Toskala and Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson who will start the next game, Wilson isn’t telling the media as of yet.
The Rangers are searching for defencemen, and might have to make a trade to get one. They have only 6 Dmen, with 2 of them being rookies, Matt Gilroy and Michael Del Zotto.
Bertuzzi to the Red Wings? Marleau loses Captaincy
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on August 18th, 2009
According to MLive.com, the Detroit Red Wings are close to signing free agent winger Todd Bertuzzi. The deal is reportedly worth $1.5 million for 1 year. This would be Bertuzzi’s second stint with the Wings; playing 8 regular season games in 2006-07 after a trade from Florida. The 34 year old winger recorded 44 points in 66 games last season for Calgary. Detroit is looking to replace some offense after losing Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky, and Jiri Hudler.
Patrick Marleau, who has been mentioned in trade rumors for the last couple years, has had his captaincy removed. Dan Boyle might be a candidate to take over as the captain.
San Jose Sharks Still Interested in Dany Heatley
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on July 21st, 2009
It must have been about a week since we’ve last heard Dany Heatley’s name mentioned, and it was nice to break in my opinion. With the Senators-Oilers deal all but apparently dead, the San Jose Sharks might be next in line to take a crack at the non-committed Heatley. Heatley may have San Jose on his list of places he’d like to play. According to the article above, Heatley likes the Sharks because they are a high scoring, front-running team. And here I thought it was because they both like to disappear. The Sharks disappear when the playoffs roll around, and Heatley likes to disappear on teammates.
Once again, Patrick Marleau’s name is mentioned in the trade talks. He must be used to rumors by now as his name has been mentioned in trade talks for the last couple years. The underacheiving Jonathan Cheechoo is also mentioned. Both teams are right too, and are over the salary cap number. Heatley’s cap number is $7.5 until after the 2013-14 season, Marleau has $6.3 million and 1 year left, Cheechoo has 2 years and $6 million.
