Morning NHL rumors and injury notes involving: the Blackhawks, Stars, Tallinder, Bogosian, Ramo, Kolanos, Tanguay, Jagr, Martinek, Niittymaki

  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: The Blackhawks are letting everyone know what they would like to trade for. A defenseman for their 2nd pairing, and a veteran forward, preferably a 2nd line center. The Hawks haven’t talked  to the Ducks who floated their big 3 and Francois Beauchemin earlier this month. In the Western Conference, only the Ducks, Oilers and Blue Jackets could be sellers so far. It would take a significant piece for Oilers Sam Gagner. In the Eastern Conference, the Sabres, Canadiens, NY Islanders, Lightning, Hurricanes and maybe the Jets could be sellers. The Sabres have Derek Roy, Drew Stafford and Brad Boyes but their price could be high. They should at least call about Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu of the Hurricanes. Untouchable prospects could be Dylan Olsen, Kevin Hayes and Brandon Saad. Brandon Pirri, Jeremy Morin, Shawn Lalonde and Brian Connelly could interest some teams.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (mailbag) If the Stars don’t sign Nicklas Grossman to a contract extension, they could trade him by the deadline. As for anyone else, that would depend on whether their buyers or sellers. If they are sellers, there should be some interest in Brenden Morrow, Sheldon Souray, Mark Fistric and Grossman. If they are in a playoff at the deadlines, would have to think they are buyers.
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a blood clot in his lower left leg. He’s been bothered by a sore leg and an MRI yesterday revealed.
  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian could be ready to return tomorrow night. He’s missed 5 consecutive games with a lower-body injury.
  • Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster confirms that recently acquired goalie Karri Ramo has 1 year left on his KHL contract.
  • Roger Millions via twitter: Flames forward Curtis Glencross was put on the IR and out at least 7 days. MRI results are not in yet.
  • Adam Kimelman via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on a Jaromir Jagr deal: “We’ve had some talks. I don’t really want to comment any further on that right now. We’ve talked about it.”
  • Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Radek Martinek will miss the rest of the season with a concussion. They’ve signed Brett Lebda to a 1 year deal.
  • Craig Custance via twitter: Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki will play for Worchester of AHL on Friday and Saturday. Interested teams will get a chance to scout him.

James Mirtle via twitter: The NY Islanders have traded the negotiating rights to Christian Ehrhoff to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2012 4th round draft pick.

Craig Custance via twitter: Jamie Langenbrunner won’t be re-signing with the Dallas Stars.

Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets and Jan Hejda are not close on a deal and it looks like he’ll hit the open market on July 1st.

Aaron Portzline via twitter: It’s unlikely that the Blue Jackets and James Wisniewski get a deal done tonight, but both sides want to get it done. David Pagnotta via twitter: Looks like the Jackets have good shot at signing Wisniewski. Deal could be 5 years in the $5.2 – $5.5 million range.

Jesse Spector via twitter: Chris Drury’s buyout is now complete.

Eric Duhatschek via twitter: Paul Kariya retired from the NHL.

Ryan Rishaug via twitter: Dwayne Roloson agrees to a 1 year deal worth $3 million with the Lightning.

NHL rumors and notes on Richards, Jagr, Selanne, Kariya, Blue Jackets, Orlov … Draft notes on the Stars, Sens, Oilers and Avs

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Brad Richards,

“You always keep an eye on that first day of July, you see what teams do and where players go. It’s always interesting,” Richards told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “There’s always something that surprises you. That’s why I want to keep everything open-minded. I’ve talked to people that have been through it and there’s always things that come out of nowhere and you want to be open-minded to receive all that stuff. It’s probably my last contract, so you want to set yourself up where you have a chance to win and feel comfortable.”

“Every day, it gets closer. I’m starting to think about it a lot,” Richards said. “It’s a very unique time, but also a little bit stressful. It’s going to be a very important decision. It’s exciting in a good way. It’s a big moment. It’s starting to hit me that it’s getting close, whereas a month ago, I would sit back and not really worry about it.”

    Petr Svoboda, Jaromir Jagr’s agent,

“We had more discussion yesterday with Detroit and Pittsburgh,” Jagr’s agent, Petr Svoboda, told ESPN.com on Wednesday morning. “Jags may be talking with [Pens GM] Ray Shero and maybe [owner] Mario [Lemieux] today, so hopefully we’ll be further along after that. Hopefully we’ll have some news, one way or another, soon.”

On Jagr using NHL interest to get more money from KHL,

“It’s absolutely not true,” said Svoboda. “I’ve heard that, but it’s not true. I mean, there’s always that option if things don’t work out with [the NHL], but this is not about trying to get more money from [the KHL]. I know Jags wants to come back to the NHL and for the right reasons.”

    On Teemu Selanne’s future,

“Teemu hasn’t decided whether he’s going to play or not,” Selanne’s veteran agent Don Baizley told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “If he plays, it’s going to be in Anaheim.”

Paul Kariya may play it safe and retire. Talks between Kevin Bieksa and the Canucks are progressing. The Coyotes and Bryzgalov don’t have a deal and are still far enough apart that a deal could go either way.

  • Philadelphia Flyers via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren “We are continuing to try and reach an agreement with Ilya, but it is safe to say that we are not close to achieving this.”
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings have made their pitch to Jagr and are in a wait-and-see mode. GM Ken Holland would like to know by July 1st.

“We’re intrigued,” Holland said, “like we were with Dominik Hasek and Mike Modano. He was an elite player in his prime. He’s 39 years of age. If he decides to come back to the NHL, he’s coming back for all the right reasons. Whether he comes to Detroit or another destination, the great ones, even when Father Time is against them a little bit, they’re still pretty good players.”

Holland has made an offer to free agent Jonathan Ericsson of around $2 million a season. He’s in talks with Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller.

  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets hope to begin their offseason makeover at the draft this week. They are looking for a skilled defenseman, a top 6 forward, and a backup goalie. Howson has spoken with many teams about possible deals. Their 8th overall pick is up for grabs.

“I’m going to do what’s in the best interest of the team,” Howson said. “It may turn out that taking the pick is in the best interest of the team.

“I want to make changes. I want to add high-end skill guys who can make an immediate difference. But you can’t force people to do something that you want them to do. So we’ll see how it plays out.”

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said the odds of them trading up are slim, odds of trading down are pretty good.

“I think moving down is a more realistic possibility,” Nieuwendyk said. “Our guys feel that after a certain point in this draft there are a number of good players and you’d be happy with acquiring any one of them. We don’t have our third round pick, so trying to get an additional pick is something that will definitely be discussed.”

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If the Senators are able to move up in the draft, they could be looking to grab winger Gabriel Landeskog, who could be selected 2nd overall. Whoever they pick could end up playing in the NHL next season. The Sens haven’t ruled out packing their 21st overall pick with 1 of their 3 2nd round picks to move up in the draft.
  • Slava Malamud via twitter: Dmitri Orlov said that if he doesn’t make the Capitals next year, and they want him to go to the AHL, he’ll go there and not return to Russia.
  • Larry Brooks via twitter: Jagr says that he didn’t not reach out to the Rangers, “If Glen thought I could help he would have told me.”
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Rumors are circulating that the Oilers have “NOT firmly decided” on draft Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. If the Oilers don’t take him, Dater thinks the Avs should draft him. If they do get RNH, it could make Paul Stastny available. With the Avs not showing interest in re-signing Tomas Fleischmann, it might mean they are looking at draft Gabriel Landeskog or Jonathan Huberdeau, both can play on the left wing. If RNH is taken by the Oilers, Dater thinks the Avs should take Huberdeau.

Kariya to play a part in Selanne’s decision … Off-season notes on the Blackhawks, Kings and Canadiens

  • JP Hoornstra of the InsideSocal: Paul Kariya could play a part in Teemu Selanne’s plan to play another season or not. Selanne has said he wants to know if Kariya would come back to Anaheim if he decides to play next year. “Obviously all the years that I had with Paul, it was just unbelievable,” Selanne said. “I talked to him yesterday and we’re going to meet next week. We didn’t even talk about injuries yet but I want to talk to him about how he’s doing, what he’s thinking and maybe go surf with him.”

If he retires, Selanne said he would be at peace his career ending now. “I think so,” he said. “I tried to play like I left everything there. That’s how you should play anyway, every season. You can’t just win the Stanley Cup every year. That would be awesome, but it doesn’t work like that. I really believe we had enough tools to go further, but we lost.”

If he comes back, it will be in Anaheim. “I haven’t thought about having a chance to go somewhere else,” he said. “This is my place for sure.”

  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Despite being knocked out by the Canucks in the first round, there isn’t a lot of holes to fill in the Blackhawks lineup. One area they need to add is size and sandpaper. They have to make decisions on RFAs Troy Brouwer, Viktor Stalberg, Chris Campoli and Jake Dowell, either to re-sign or use as trade bait. Re-signing RFA’s Cory Crawford and Michal Frolik is a priority. Ryan Johnson may be only UFA to return (if the price is right) out of a group of Tomas Kopecky, Marty Turco, Fernando Pisani and Jordan Hendry. Kopecky may have priced himself out of Chicago’s plans, he made $1.2 million this past season. The Blackhawks could look at dealing one of their “big-ticket players”, possibly Niklas Hjalmarsson and his $3.5 million cap hit.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Kings think that Dustin Penner needs to improve his conditioning for next season. Winger Justin Williams needs to decide if he wants to have surgery on his shoulder or not. GM Lombardi has to decide if he wants Michal Handzus and Alexei Ponikarovsky back, coach Murray does. They must also re-sign RFA’s Drew Doughty, Wayne Simmonds, Trevor Lewis, Brad Richardson, Alec Martinez and Oscar Moller. Moller’s future with the Kings may not be bright as he scratched for Scott Parse who had been out for 5 months. Lombardi on Doughty, “Part of this is do we go short term with Doughty for now and keep it down or try and go long-term.”
  • Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens blueline could have a different look next year as they have 6 UFA’s. Who of Andrei Markov, Roman Hamrlik, James Wisniewski, Brent Sopel and Hal Gill will be back?

Stars close to getting a new owner … Big off-season questions for Ducks … Dubinsky wants a deal ASAP … Erat ready to return

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Tom Gaglardi is getting closer owning the Dallas Stars as he’s agreed to a price and most of the terms. Gaglardi “will soon enter an exclusive negotiating period of roughly 30 days to complete the purchase of the NHL team and a 50-per-cent share of American Airlines Center. The last hurdle, according to a source familiar with the sale who requested anonymity because the deal is not official, is taking the Stars through bankruptcy court so Gaglardi will not be hampered by any debts left by current owner Tom Hicks.” Though no one is saying what the price for the team and half-interest in the arena is, but it could be in the $250 million range.
  • The Globe and Mail: Two of the Ducks biggest off-season questions will be if Teemu Selanne will return next year and if Jonas Hiller can get over vertigo? “I’ve got to be honest, it was so much fun this year, and that’s all I ask,” Selanne said. “It’s not about goals or points. I just want to enjoy this every day. I try to play like I left everything out there, but you can’t just win the Stanley Cup every year.” Lubomir Visnovsky was playing through a serious shoulder injury during the playoffs. GM Bob Murray added, “The decisions this summer are different than just getting players,” Murray said. “The purpose here is, can we win with this core group? That’s what I’ve got to figure out.” Selanne said that he talked to Paul Kariya, who’s fully healthy, but isn’t sure if he wants to return to an NHL that has had so many head issues this year.
  • Peter Botte of the NY Daily News: Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky is an RFA and coming off a 2 year, $3.75 million deal. “I’d like to get it done as quickly as possible,” Dubinsky said Monday at the team’s practice facility in Greenburgh. “I think the Rangers want me, and I want the Rangers, so at the end of the day we might as well not waste each other’s time and draw it out as long as it was (two years ago). The sooner it’s done, the sooner I can focus on putting all my energy and efforts to this organization.”
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov won’t be suiting up for Russia at the World Championship as Evgeni Nabokov was given the #1 job, Bryzgalov didn’t want another role.
  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman were in full pads at yesterday mornings practice. Knuble stayed on the ice with teammates for the practice, Wideman left after 15 minutes due to feeling lightheaded. Knuble wasn’t assigned a line at practice and is still not sure when he’ll return. “There’s a fine line between coming back and helping and coming back and hurting a team,” Knuble continued. “That’s my main concern, is that you wanna come back and you don’t wanna have to worry about contributing all the time, but just not hindering what’s going on.”
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock isn’t worried about Johan Franzen’s ankle injury, even if he missed another practice earlier this week. Henrik Zetterberg has taken part in 2 practices recently.
  • Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Predators forward Martin Erat practiced with the team yesterday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury in Game 4 versus the Ducks. Erat would have been able to go in Game 7 if the Ducks had extended the series.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Former NHLer Donald Brashear is going to give MMA a try, he has a deal to try cage-fighting in June at ‘Ringside 11′ at the Quebec Coliseum.

Kariya out next season … Could Guerin end up in LA? Oilers nixed a Souray-Hartnell deal last year?

  • Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy: Paul Kariya’s agent, Don Baizley, issued a statement saying that Paul Kariya will sit out the 2010-11 season with post-concussion syndrome. Kariya has a history of concussion problems, and missed 6 games last season with a concussion. There was no mention of him retiring.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: It wouldn’t be a surprise if Bill Guerin signed with the Los Angeles Kings. Kings GM Dean Lombardi and Guerin have a western Massachusetts connection.
  • JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News: Joffery Lupul’s mysterious blood ailment will keep him off skates until he’s re-evaluated on September 20th. He’s still confident that he’ll be ready for the season opener.
  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton TV sportscaster, Kevin Karius said the Edmonton Oilers came close to to sending Sheldon Souray to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scott Hartnell last season. Journal reporter Jim Matheson also confirmed that it almost happened as well.

“Steve Tambellini offered Sheldon Souray to the Flyers for Scott Hartnell. And Hartnell has a no-trade clause and Paul Holmgren went to Hartnell and said, ‘Listen, the Oilers are interested in you. Would you waive your no trade?’ And Hartnell said, ‘You know, I’d like to, I wouldn’t mind going to Edmonton and playing.’

“He’s a Lloydminster guy. He’s an Alberta guy. He likes it here. I think it would have been a kind of a homecoming for him. A power forward, kind of what the Oilers need. So he said, ‘Go ahead.’ So Paul Holmgren phoned Tamby back and said, ‘Here is the deal. It’s done if you want it,’ and Tamby pulled out.

  • Greg Wyshynski of Puddy Daddy talked to a source close to Hartnell that said Hartnell has never waived his no-movement clause, or been asked to waive it.
  • Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Brendan Morrison, Jeff Halpren and Mike Comrie are just a couple UFA’s that don’t have any contract offers, and might have to take a training camp invite if they don’t get any offers between now and the start of training camp. The Penguins are looking at forwards who they could invite to camp. Patrick O’Sullivan is getting interest from several clubs who are interested in bringing him in on tryout basis. O’Sullivan is considered a bit of risk (and worth the risk in my opinion, there’s no doubting the kid is talented). Scouts say his fundamentals are flawed and there are concerns about his desire to play in the NHL. Indications are that the Penguins don’t have an interest, but O’Sullivan’s side has contacted the Penguins.
  • Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Nikolai Khabibulin may be suspended by the NHL for his drunk driving charges, to go along with his possible jail time.

Staal’s return delayed … Ducks looking for D depth … Bergfors-Thrashers not close … Pens not talking to Kariya or Svatos

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins center Jordan Staal has “experienced a couple of setbacks” from the torn tendon is his foot. They will take it easy with him and there is no need for concern if he misses a couple days or weeks.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks are looking to add some ‘low cost depth options’ on the point, but it’s possible they enter camp with what they have. The Ducks have considered trading for Kevin Bieksa, but the Canucks aren’t in a rush to move him any more.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Jiri Lehtinen isn’t ready to make a decision yet if he’ll return to the Stars or retire. Mike Ribeiro’s no-trade clause stipulates that he can name 10 that he doesn’t want to be traded to (that doesn’t sound like much of a ‘no-trade’ clause to me if you name teams you don’t want to be traded to).  The Stars want to sign RFA James Neal to a 2 year deal, Neal is fine with a 1 or 2 year deal.
  • Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: The Canadiens have yet to talk to Andre Markov about a contract extension. Markov is a UFA after the season, GM Pierre Gauthier told Markov’s agent “(Gauthier) wants to wait until the right time”.
  • Eric Engels via twitter: Engels thinks the Canadiens would be foolish if they weren’t interested in Bill Guerin.
  • Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Thrashers GM Rick Dudley says that they remain ways apart with RFA Niclas Bergfors, not close on “value of player.”
  • The Hockey Writers: Marek Svatos’ agent Richard Evans, “Marek would certainly be able to provide offence for a team like Pittsburgh,” Evans told THW Tuesday.  “Pittsburgh is a team that Marek would be very interested in joining…on paper it looks like a good fit — but ultimately that is up to Ray [Shero].”

Kovalchuk to the KHL? Pens and Bruins say no Guerin

  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: With the KHL season starting on Sept. 8th, there is the possibility that Kovalchuk starts there, then returns to the NHL when is contract is finalized.
  • Pavel Lysenkov via twitter: Lysenkov called Kovalchuk’s Russian agent, who confirmed that he called Medvedev’s assistant, not the KHL president.
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: A source told DePaoli that the feeling was that GM Ray Shero was interested in bringing Bill Guerin back, but the rest of the organization/coaching staff wasn’t.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: The St. Louis Blues have been contacted by the Anaheim Ducks equipment people about Paul Kariya. It appears that he’ll be playing with the Ducks, but he still won’t say that he’s playing next year.

Audio on Kaberle … Free agent news from around the league

  • Andy Strickland via twitter: The Blues had said for weeks that Kaberle never made sense since he could walk away at the end of the year.
  • Steve Simmons via twitter: Kaberle was willing to sign a long term contract if he was traded to a city he liked, but no one asked.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: Responding to Simmons …. Only if right city. Kaberle’s agent has said of his desire to stay in the Eastern Conference.
  • Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Some agents are saying that many of the established veterans may not be signing anywhere until mid-to-late September. Teams are looking for younger, cheaper 3rd-4th liners. They don’t have any cap space, but the Bruins are looking at veteran free agent wingers. They’re keeping in touch with Bill Guerin and Miro Satan. Raffi Torres has drawn minimal interest and may have to settle for a 1 year deal around $800,000 to low $1 million. Willie Mitchell in talks with 5 teams; Kings, Sharks, Lightning, Capitals and Canucks. The Anaheim Ducks are looking for a defenseman before turning their attention to Paul Kariya. Ruslan Fedotenko has received an invite to Islanders training camp, the Wild may also be interested. Slava Kozlov wants to go to a contender but not getting a lot of interest, KHL is option but not being pursued at the moment. A couple of teams have called about Jeff Halpren, but he’s yet to receive an offer.
  • EJ Hradek via twitter: Thinks the only logical spot for Niemi is San Joseba possibly the Capitals if they are not sold on their two young goalies.

5 days left for Kaberle … Kariya next for Ducks? Savard may waive ‘no-movement’ now

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Kovalchuk ruling will make is even more difficult for Brian Burke to trade Tomas Kaberle (unless the Devils and Kovalchuk have another deal close to being done). Sure other teams are interested, but 2 teams in on Kovalchuk, could also be front-runners for Kaberle, the Kings and Devils. Kaberle has made it be known in the past that he’d rather be in the Eastern Conference, Western teams may not offer up as much. The Sharks, Blues, Stars have some interest in Kaberle, as do the Bruins and Lightning. Burke has said he won’t trade Kaberle to the highest bidder, a deal has to get him exactly what he wants. If they don’t trade him, the Leafs could look to signing him to an extension, he’d probably be looking somewhere along Phil Kessell money, $5.4 million.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Leafs have 5 days to trade Kaberle. The Leafs are looking for a top forward in return, but it’s unknown if teams will re-visit Kovalchuk instead of looking at Kaberle. “The situation as this week goes on is no different than other weeks,” Curran said (Kaberle’s agent). “The player is owned by the Leafs and the only way we’d be aware of a change is if we were provided permission to talk to a team or if maybe the Leafs were interested in talking about a contract extension.”
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray all but confirmed their interest in Paul Kariya during a conference call. “Teemu obviously knows Paul very well so that was a good source to go to. I don’t know if Paul’s decided if he’s going to play again or not. That remains to be seen. We need the answer to that question first.” If they were to offer Kariya a contract, it would be at a lower base salary plus bonuses, something similar to Mike Modano’s.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Marc Savard never waived his ‘no-movement’ clause as reported earlier this summer. Though, if he was asked now “he probably would” as he’s been unhappy with all the trade rumors.
  • Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times: The Ducks want Ryan for 5  years, Ryan wants less. “We’re going to try something different,” Murray said of the Ryan talks. “And that’s all I’m going to say.”
  • George Malik of MLive: The signing of Ruslan Salei by the Red Wings basically eliminates Andreas Lilja from any of their plans.
  • Scott Norton (Norton Sports) via twitter: His client, Bill Sweatt, will sign a BIG contract by the end of August. Sweatt was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Kris Versteeg deal, but he was unable to come to terms with them before the signing deadline, he’s now a UFA.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Toronto offered Sweatt that maximum amount allowed. Burke blamed Norton for the failed negotiations. “I believe a more experienced agent would have got this done,” he said.  The Leafs should be signing Jerry D’Amigo to a 3-year entry level deal shortly.

Selanne signs with Ducks, Kariya next? Double digit offers for Kaberle

Teemu Selanne signs a one year deal with the Anaheim Ducks. The contract is for $3.25 million plus bonuses.

  • Howard Berger on the Fan 590: 6 days remain until Tomas Kaberle’s no-trade clause kicks back in. Brian Burke has now received “double digit” offers. While the quantity is increasing, the quality may not be there, as there hasn’t been anything close to a deal make. If Burke really wanted to trade Kaberle he could have done so by now, so there is still the possibility that he’ll remain a Leaf for next season.

Selanne not with Ducks yet … Ducks and Kariya talking? … Some Wild talk

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: The deal hasn’t been finalized for Chris Chelios to take a front office position with the Red Wings. He also has a similar offer from the Blackhawks, and possibly a “huge KHL offer”.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Reports that Teemu Selanne has signed with the Anaheim Ducks are a little premature. He’s close to a desicion, but nothing official yet. Selanne is pitching the Ducks and Paul Kariya for another reunion. “I’ve talked to Paul and the Ducks,” Selanne told the publication. “Paul has been waiting for my decision and I hope things move forward.”
  • Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: According to Oilers assistant GM, Rick Olczyk, the rumors are false that they are looking for a loophole to get out of Nikolai Khabibulin’s contract. The signing of Martin Gerber had nothing to do with the possibility that Khabibulin could be sentenced to prison, “It had nothing at all to do with that,” Olczyk said of Khabibulin’s impending trial on extreme DUI charges in Scottsdale. “He had a tremendous year in the KHL and we needed to fill a void. We felt it was the right move and the right player at this particular point in time. It has nothing at all, and I’d like to stress that, it has nothing to do with Khabby.”
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Russo’s initial thought after the Wild signed John Madden was that it was the end of James Sheppard, but maybe not according to GM Fletcher, “Not necessarily at all. The performance of players in training camp will determine what we do.” Pierre-Marc Bouchard will start skating soon in Montreal. Fletcher doens’t much else happening for the Wild this offseason, he not actively pursuing anything.
  • Ansar Khan of Mlive: The Red Wings are one of six teams interested in Willie Mitchell, but that number could shrink when dollars are discussed according to Mitchell’s agent.
