Brodeur and Hemsky injured … Gardiner to sit for Franson? Jackets may look for goalie … 7 teams interested in Turris … Asham KOs Beagle video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 14th, 2011
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur left last night’s game after the 1st period. Brodeur injured his right shoulder at 11:30 while diving for a puck. “It should be fine, just a matter of a couple days until the swelling goes down,” Brodeur said. “I was fully extended and just fell on it.” Brodeur hopes to travel with the team today.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner basically confirmed that he’ll be a healthy scratch on Saturday to make room for Cody Franson’s Leaf debut.
“They told me they were going to take me slow and ease me into playing time and stuff like that, so I kind of expected this,” Gardiner, 21, said. “It’s not the end of the world. I’m just going to play my best in practice and keep going.
“We have a lot of games coming up, and I’m looking forward to that. I’m sure I will play in a couple of those games at least.”
Gardiner has average 12 minutes in his first 2 games, is a -2 with no points or penalty minutes
- Marc Narducci of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Former Flyer Mike Richards and the LA Kings will visit Philly on Saturday. “I try not to think about it as much as possible,” Richards said after Thursday’s morning skate at the Prudential Center. “It will be an exciting night once I get there.”
- Craig Custance of ESPN: With this being an important season for the Blue Jackets and GM Scott Howson, Custance wonders how long they will stick with goalie Steve Mason if he struggles again. Howson opted against bringing in a veteran backup goalie as none of them have shown they can do it for 40-50 games. Howson may look to acquire goalie if Mason doesn’t work out. Cory Schneider could be an option but the Canucks are in no hurry to move him. Al Montoya of the Islanders played well last year. Jonathan Bernier is stuck behind Jonathan Quick.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Oilers forward Ales Hemsky injured his shoulder in the 1st period of last night’s game versus the Wild. Renny said that Hemsky’s shoulder that “It’s sore. It’s not fatal. He’ll be back.” It is the right shoulder that he had surgery on in March.
- Jesse Spector via twitter: Defenseman Paul Mara is still without a team. He’s talking to teams and looking for the right fit.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: As many as 7 teams have sent offers to Coyotes GM Don Maloney for RFA holdout Kyle Turris. Many of the offers have been “very strong” and likely that they included a quality roster player and a prospect. Maloney has recently indicated to other teams that he may be willing to move Turris for the right deal.
- Curtis Zupke via twitter: Ducks defenseman Kurtis Foster will do a 2 game AHL conditioning assignment over the weekend.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators CEO says the NHL takes close to 50% of playoff revenue. If the Predators decide during to take on a salary like they did last year with Mike Fisher, GM Poile believes that ownership would allow him.
- In case you missed Arron Asham KOing Jay Beagle. Asham did say after the game that his post fight actions were classless.
Camp notes on Leafs, Hurricanes and Senators … Staal back practicing … NHL re-alignment … Sales notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on September 20th, 2011
- James Mirtle via twitter: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said they will be cut down to 40-42 players by tomorrow afternoon.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: First roster cuts for the Hurricanes will be tomorrow.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Senators will start cutting junior players today, trimming their camp roster from 59.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal is back practicing today.
- Chris Johnson via twitter: Michael Nylander is listed in the Flyers lineup for tonight’s exhibition game against the Maple Leafs. His last regular season NHL game was in 2009.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Paul Mara’s agent has said that the NY Rangers and NY Islanders have expressed some interest. He’s in talks with other teams, and will not attend any camp on a tryout.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Jaromir Jagr: “In Detroit & Pittsburgh everything was settled. There are guys who play w/ each other a long time, nobody would change things for me” and “Liked everything in Russia except for travel… In the NHL, teams make enough at gate to cover expensive charters. KHL teams can’t”
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Re-alignment for next will be discussed at today’s Board of Governor’s meeting. They could discuss conference structure, creating 4 divisions of 7 or 8 teams.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk is optimistic the team will have a new owner by Christmas. Devils co-owner Jeff Vanderbeek plans to buyout owners Ray Chambers and Mike Gilfillan, but some don’t think he can afford it alone. The Blues have “a number of very strong candidates” according to president John Davidson. Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle wasn’t concerned about the ownership questions when negotiating his contract: “I didn’t even think about that when I was doing my negotiation,” Yandle said. “You think about getting a deal done and staying in Phoenix.”
‘Collusion’ surrounding Stamkos and Doughty? Malone ready for training camp … Prospal signs with Blue Jackets
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 24th, 2011
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: 3 ex-Bruins are still on the market: Sergei Samsonov, Nick Boynton, and Paul Mara. Dupont brings up the word ‘collusion’, as he wonders about no one putting forth an offer sheet for Steven Stamkos as “they simply opt not to violate the wink-wink, nudge-nudge gentlemen’s agreement that mysteriously has GMs unwilling to raid their competitors’ rosters.” A realistic comparison for RFA Brad Marchand could be Lightning’s Teddy Purcell who signed a 2 year deal with a cap hit of $2.36 million. Could also do a 3 year, $9 million deal. The Winnipeg Jets told Manitoba native Shane Hnidy that there may not be room for him on their blueline after he asked them if they needed help. The Lightning have a lot of money tied up in there top 3, and not a lot left to for $2-3 million 3rd liners. Ryan Malone and his $4.5 million cap hit could be moved. Rumors have Craig MacTavish possibly coaching Vancouver’s AHL affiliate in Chicago.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons also throws out the ‘collusion’ word with regards to Stamkos and Drew Doughty. “it’s not the job of hockey general managers to act as the conscience of the game. It’s their job to make their teams better.” There were no offers made to Stamkos and there haven’t been any exploratory calls to Doughty.
Stamkos, we’re told, would have seriously considered signing a one-year, $12-million deal. But the problem with an offer like that is that Tampa would have matched it. The longer-term, larger-money deal, might have been too rich for the Lightning to match. That’s probably where the Leafs had to go if they wanted to play that game.
- Tampa Bay Lightning via twitter: Lightning PR on Ryan Malone: “The 4-6 months is inaccurate. He did have shoulder surgery, but he should be fine for the start of training camp.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The long-term injury to Kristian Huselius led to the Blue Jackets signing Vinny Prospal to a 1 year deal worth $1.75 million.
Perry was almost traded to Oilers … Injury notes on Spacek, Lecavalier, Clowe, Green, Hamhuis, Miller, Havlat and 3 Senators
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 5th, 2011
- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: In 2003-04, the Anaheim Ducks almost traded Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks were prepared to send Perry and a 2004 1st round pick to the Oilers for center Mike Comrie. Comrie was holding out, and the Oilers were wanting Comrie to repay $2.5 million of his original signing bonus. When he didn’t repay the signing bonus, the deal fell through, and he was later traded to Philly. The Ducks used the 2004 1st round pick to select Ladislav Smid.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Roman Hamrlik, a UFA at season’s end, hinted that it could be his last year in a Canadiens uniform. After the media named him the “Jacques Beauchamp Trophy” winner (goes to the unsung hero), “I’ve been doing this a long and especially (since) this is my last year, it’s an honour.” … “I know I’ve been playing with lots of good players this season. You guys had a choice and it’s a big honour for me.” P.K. Subban and Jaroslav Spacek are the only defenseman under contract for next year. Hamrlik, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski, Hal Gill, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara are all UFA’s.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Quote of the Year: Jaroslav Spacek on how he knew his March 4th knee surgery was a success, “I woke up with two knees and no big boobs.”A decision if he’ll play tonight won’t be made until a couple hours before the game.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe left last night’s game after 3 shifts with what coach Todd McLellan called a lower body tweak after the game. He was being evaluated after the game and more could be known today.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Tom Poti didn’t travel with the team to Toronto for tonight’s game. Green took part in full practice yesterday but didn’t take any contact. He hasn’t ruled out getting into a game before the playoffs start. Alex Semin had a maintenance day yesterday to help heal some nagging injuries. Boudreau said there is a “chance” he could miss 1 of the team’s 3 remaining games.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Taylor Hall was asked to join Team Canada for the World Championships, but won’t be good enough shape to go. Sense around New Jersey is that they will do all they can to re-sign Zach Parise, but will he want to stay?
- AP on NHL.com: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller took some shots yesterday at practice. He still thinks he’s day-to-day and hopes to play on Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Jhonas Enroth will start tonight against the Lightning.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Chris Drury is hoping to get back in the lineup for the playoffs.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Vincent Lecavalier said he will have no choice and will wear a visor when he returns. He may continue to wear it next year if he can adjust to it. TB Lightning via twitter: There was no structural damage to Lecavalier’s eye, and he’ll be a game time decision today.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said that Martin Havlat is doubtful to play in the final 3 games, as he has an upper body injury.
- Chris Vivalmore via twitter: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom won’t travel with the team to Nashville and New York.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators winger Daniel Alfredsson and defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Erik Karlsson are all done for the season.
- Ben Kuzman via twitter: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis (out with a concussion) skated on his own yesterday.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: It’s sounding like Oilers center Shawn Horcoff is done for the year after having a setback last week.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will have about $15 million in salary cap space next season after they re-sign RFA’s Tyler Bozak, Clarke MacArthur, James Reimer, and Luke Schenn. The Leafs are more than one player away, so spending a lot money on Brad Richards may not be the right move. It’s unlikely the Leafs will trade some of their young talent for expensive veterans. If Richards (31) is looking for a 3 year deal, he might be a fit for the Leafs, but he’ll be looking for longer term. Paul Stastny, if made available, could be a player the Leafs would be interested in. Cox wonders if Burke could try to package his 2 1st round picks and a Kulemin or Gunnarson to move up in the draft and grab a top prospect (top 4), but that would tough.
Habs looking for top 6 and a Dman … Senators that are/might be available … White may be dealt soon … Flyers shopping Zherdev
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2011
- David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are still looking for a top 6 forward, and adding Paul Mara doesn’t prevent them from adding another defenseman. Mara was a depth move with a cap hit of $210,000 for them. Still looking to add another Dman.
- Eric Engels via twitter: Canadiens fans may be excited that there team inquired about Tomas Kaberle and rumored Robyn Regehr, but they aren’t going in those directions.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray,
“I’m not trying to trade everybody,” said Murray following the Kelly deal.
“I’m trying to trade some other people or move some other people, but it’s certainly not a housecleaning by any means.”
Top candidates to be moved by the Senators: Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Neil (Pens and Habs interested), and Chris Campoli. Possible Senators on the move: Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba and Matt Carkner. They’ll try to move Sergei Gonchar and Alex Kovalev.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes are considering a trade offer for Ian White, and he could be moved in the next day or two, or not at all.
“Teams out there are looking for different things, and we have something to consider,” Rutherford said in an interview Wednesday. “This could go one way or the other.
“We have an offer, so we decided to pull [White] back for a day or two. But he could be back in the lineup this week.”
It’s not known which team made the offer, if it was a player-for-player deal or draft picks or prospects.
- Mike Gillis (Canucks GM) via twitter: Trade rumors involving the Canucks [yesterday] are completely false. (He is referring to the rumors that they were acquiring Ian White)
- Anthony Sanfilippo of DelcoTimes: Ville Leino missed last night’s game but should be able to go Friday according to Paul Holmgren. The Flyers opted to use Jody Shelly instead of Nik Zherdev in Leino’s place. The Flyers are trying to trade Zherdev, and if they can’t find any takers he might get waived.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: When talking about Ales Hemsky trade rumors he asked, “What am I worth?” Matheson thinks that when looking at the deal the Senators and Leafs got for Mike Fisher and Kris Versteeg, it would be more than that. A 1st round pick and another draft pick or good NHLer?
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Atlanta Thrashers have begun contract talks with Andrew Ladd, and should have a deal done by the trade deadline. Strickland doesn’t see the Avalanche doing much. The Blue Jackets will look to move a Dman for a forward. Penguins are looking for a forward, with minor rumblings that they’d move Alex Goligoski. Don’t expect anything from the Blackhawks. If the Sabres fallout of playoff contention they might move Jordan Leopold. A couple teams are looking at Blues forward Brad Winchester, including the Canucks. The Blues have made Ty Conklin available and will consider Eric Brewer who would consider waiving his no-trade clause for the right team.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater can’t see a contender interested in Avs goalie Craig Anderson.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Brunside doesn’t see the Flyers doing much more given their cap situation. The Lightning are looking for defensive help, and won’t give up a 1st or 2nd round picks in a trade. LeBrun doesn’t think the Hurricanes will move Joni Pitkanen unless the fall out of contention before the deadline. John-Michael Liles may be a fallback for the “failed Kaberle suitors.” Alex Kovalev could be a nice fit in Pittsburgh, maybe for a 4th or 5th round pick.
Ducks trade Paul Mara to the Canadiens
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on February 17th, 2011
Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: The Montreal Canadiens have acquired defenseman Paul Mara from the Anaheim Ducks for a 2012 5th round pick.
The pick the Ducks received previously belonged to them, they sent it to Montreal in the Maxim Lapierre trade at the end of December, 2010.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on February 10th, 2011
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen has a list of the top 15 players who might be traded by the Feb. 28th trade deadline. 1. Chris Phillips (Ott) 2. Mike Fisher (Ott) 3. Alexei Kovalev (Ott) 4. - Arthur Staple of Newsday: Sources are saying Burke wants at least 3 pieces for Tomas Kaberle: a current NHLer, a prospect, and a possibly a 1st round pick. It’s doubtful the NY Rangers would give up that much. Evgeny Grachev and Dale Weise would be involved, but the Rangers aren’t giving up a 1st round pick for a rental. The Leafs may also move JS Giguere and Kris Versteeg.
- Joshua Cooper via twitter: Scouts in Nashville last night were from Tampa, Vancouver, Phoenix, Anaheim, and double Toronto.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks will either waive or trade a defenseman or 2 within 24-48 hours, Mara and Brookbank are possibilities. They currently have 9 defenseman on their roster.
- James Mirtle via twitter: The addition of Joffery Lupul could make Kris Versteeg expendable. Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov thinks the Thrashers have been scouting Versteeg for awhile.
- James Mirtle via twitter: As of right now it looks like Tomas Kaberle could walk for nothing on July 1st.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Expect the Leafs to pull off at least 2 more trades by the deadline.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur, out with a sprained right knee, won’t be in Toronto tonight, and likely out tomorrow vs. the Sharks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche expect Peter Forsberg to have is visa paper in order in time for at least one game this weekend, they play Friday and Saturday night. - Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis had his face bounce off the glass from a Ryan Getzlaf hit. He laid on the ice for several minutes before skating off. Asked if he’ll be out Saturday, Vigneault said: “Right now, I can’t tell you. I saw him after the game and he was fine.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf won’t be suspended for the hit. Video is post below.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: The Calgary Flames will be with Alex Tanguay for an indefinite period with a neck strain, it was originally reported that it was a concussion.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom took part in full practice yesterday and is close to returning to the lineup. Enstrom has missed the last 6 games.
Parise visits doctors today … Ballard to return tonight? 10 teams looking for Dmen … New Leaf lines … Langkow’s return 50-50?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 1st, 2010
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise will see a doctor today to find out how serious his lower body injury is. Parise said he originally suffered the injury in his summer training while skating. “It’s been bothering me,” he told me. “I know exactly when I hurt it. I hurt it in August and it’s been bothering me. It hasn’t gone away. I kind of hurt it every game.”
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Keith Ballard made it through weekend practices with the Vancouver Canucks and could return Monday night. He will likely be a game time decision according to Vigneault. Dan Hamhuis skated for 20 minutes yesterday but still felt some discomfort in his foot. Ryan Parent left yesterday’s practice early with a groin strain.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Daniel Briere has a hearing via conference call scheduled for today at 10am regarding his stick work to the head on Saturday night (video of incident can be seen in yesterday’s post). Briere has 8 instances since 2005 where he received a warning, fine or suspension according to John Shannon.
- Bruce Garrioch in the Toronto Sun: There may be as many as 10 teams looking for defenseman, including the Senators, Lightning, Kings and Sharks. The Senators are dangling Brian Lee. The Ducks have said they’d trade Paul Mara. The Oilers have Sheldon Souray and his broken hand. Kevin Bieksa will likely become available by the Canucks at some point when their defensive corps gets healthy. The city of Glendale and Matthew Hulsizer are still working on the details of the lease. Glendale will cover some of the losses from the Coyotes but only if he won’t move the team. If he moves the team within 5 years, they’ll want their money back. The Dallas Stars are averaging under 14,000 fans a game and may have to deal Brad Richards before the deadline; “They might have to do it to save cash, but that just doesn’t make sense to me,” said one league executive. “They’ve got a chance to have a pretty good team. They should be trying to add, not subtract.” The New Jersey Devils have been fielding calls regarding Patrick Elias, but he has a no-movement clause with 2 years left on his contract and would likely want to stay with the Devils. The Phoenix Coyotes are trying to move Petr Prucha and his $1.1 million salary.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It may be 50-50 chance that Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow is able to return from a neck injury he sustained last year. He was shut down last week after feeling numbness below the waist during an intensive workout.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are looking for some more scoring from the lineup, have juggled the lines yesterday at practice. Mike Brown – Kris Versteeg – Tim Brent, Luca Caputi – Phil Kessel – Tyler Bozak, Mikhail and Nikolai Kulemin – Clarke MacArthur – Grabovski, and Fredrik Sjostrom – Colton Orr – Christian Hanson.
- Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: The Calgary Flames could move Ian White at some point this season. White will be a UFA at season’s end, with the signing of Mark Giordano to a long term deal and the emergence of TJ Brodie, White could be expendable if they are out of the playoff race.
- Jesse Spector via twitter: No truth to the rumor of Mats Zuccarello leaving the Rangers AHL team.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Look for Justin Peters to get the start on Monday for the Carolina Hurricanes.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Evgeny Artyukhin passed his 2nd medicals with SKA and will make his debut tomorrow.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Carlo Colaiacovo’s return to the Blues lineup is not known after taking a hit from Jordan Tootoo last week. He’s still experience neck spasms and will have to undergo further tests.

- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The New Jersey Devils will not appeal the $3 million fine and loss of 2 draft picks handed down by the NHL according to Bettman and other officials.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers players wouldn’t view Sheldon Souray a problem at training camp like management does.

- Helene Elliot via twitter: Bobby Ryan could play some center this year. He wasn’t seeking offer sheets this summer.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Andy McDonald and David Backes will return to their natural positions, at least to start the season. McDonald will return to center, played LW last year. Backes will be on the right side, was a centerman last year.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: 2010 3rd overall pick, Erik Gudbranson could play up to 9 games with the Florida Panthers this season before they send him back to Kingston of the OHL. If he plays 10 games, it would burn a year of his contract.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: 20 of the 28 players attending the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp, will be invited to the main camp. Mirtle lists 47 of the 62 that will most likely be invited, will update the entire list when it’s made available.
- Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have released their camp invitees.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Going to the Ottawa Senators training camp: 5 goalies, 15 defenseman, and 30 forwards. No free agent tryouts as they don’t have any cap room.
- Bobby Ryan talks about his new contract:
Trade Rumors still going on … Eyes turning to Free Agency
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on June 27th, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The LA Kings made a play at the rights for Ilya Kovalchuk, but the New Jersey Devils reject as they still hope to re-sign him. If Dan Hamhuis and the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t reach a deal, the Kings could also be interested in signing him. The Kings like Tomas Kaberle but it may not fit as the Leafs want a top-6 forward, and so do the Kings. The Devils are still trying to sign Paul Martin, but it looks like he maybe heading to the open market. Kaberle could be an option for the Devils if they are unable to sign Martin. The Sharks re-signed Niclas Wallin and Scott Nichol to one year deals. The Phoenix Coyotes still hope to re-sign Zbynek Michalek, but are running out of time.
- Bruce Garrioch in the Toronto Sun: Ray Whitney could sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He could get a 2 year deal at $3.5 million per season. Minnesota made a run at David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and Stephen Weiss. The Oilers offered Andrew Cogliano and another player to Boston for the 2nd overall pick. The Bruins are still working on moving Marc Savard. The Coyotes, Rangers, Leafs, and Thrashers are looking for a center. Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto are on Savard’s list of preferred teams.
- ChicagoBreakingSports: Niklas Hjalmarsson has received a qualifying offer from the Chicago Blackhawks. Andrew Ladd and Jordan Hendry have yet to receive qualifying offers and may hit unrestricted free agency.
- Pat Hickey: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier must decide this week if he’ll re-sign Dominic Moore. Glen Metropolit and Paul Mara appear to be headed to free agency. He’ll also start working on signing Carey Price to a long term contract.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: With the Minnesota Wild unable to make any trades during the draft, they may be more active in the free agent market than originally planned, or they may just hold course. The Wild need to address the lack of depth at center. They are hoping that Pierre-Marc Bouchard is able to return from his concussion that happened 17 months ago.
- Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Yzerman told LeBrun that they were not acquiring the rights to Chris Mason.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Tim Thomas may have waived his no trade clause. The Flyers have shown interest (this was written before Flyers acquired Nabokov’s rights).
- Darren Dreger via Twitter: The Maple Leafs have shown some interest in Marc Savard. Tomas Kaberle won’t be part of a deal if it happens.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Burke put Kaberle talks on hold Saturday and focus on the draft. After free agency starts on July 1st, he expects talks to heat up after the free market for offensive defenseman is set.
- Michael Obernauer of the New York Daily News: The New York Rangers and Marc Staal don’t appear close to a deal at the moment.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a wide gap; it’s more like a chasm.
“I’d like to have it done,” Sather said. “In Staal’s situation, he’s in exactly the same position Dubinsky was in last year. Where that’s going to end up is anyone’s imagination. He’s a good player, we like him – just like Dubinsky: we’d like to have him back, we think he’s got a long future, we’re going to treat him fairly. Sometimes agents don’t recognize that – leverage works both ways.”
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: The Flyers may have a verbal agreement with the San Jose Sharks that would send the Flyers 2011 7th round pick to the Sharks for the rights to Evgeni Nabokov.
