No truth to Kaberle, Rosehill for Brown … Another Forsberg comeback? Donovan, Pisani looking for a deal

  • There was a rumor floating around the internet last night that the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Tomas Kaberle and Jay Rosehill to the Los Angeles Kings for Dustin Brown. The report was tied to Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider but he had nothing to do it. All of it was false.  Spector’s Hockey via twitter sums it up the best: “So, to sum up, folks: No truth to rumor the Leafs were about to trade Kaberle to the Kings for Dustin Brown. Total BS.” Daniel Tolensky (of TSN) via twitter: ”Does anyone really think Kings will trade their 25-year old Captain who scored 81 G over 3 yrs & has 4 yrs left @ $3.175 mil for Kaberle?”. Tolensky tweets that a top-6 forward for Kaberle would be bad contract (Malone)/project (Stafford)/prospect (Moller) and a pick, either a 1st or 2nd. Tolensky also thinks that Drew Stafford and a pick could be fair option for Kaberle.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy can see Kaberle going to Boston, and Marc Savard going to Ottawa. (A 3-team, inter-division trade, unheard of. I don’t know what Toronto would get/want from Ottawa’s roster.)
  • Kevin Allen via twitter: There’s a Swedish media report that Peter Forsberg is thinking about returning to the NHL.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Answering some questions from a reader. The Stars have 20 players under contract for next season at $40.6 million, and they should be able to get James Neal,  Nicklas Grossman, and Matt Niskanen under contract, under their internal cap ceiling. The Stars will probably hold tough on their offers. Heika thinks the Stars could be offering Neal a 2 year deal for $5 million, Grossman at around $2 million per season for 3-4 years, and Niskanen a 1-year deal for around $1 million.
  • George Malik of MLive: Andreas Lilja finds it “tough” and “a little frustrating” being without an NHL contract for season. The frustration comes from the family side of things and not on the professional side, finding a home, enrolling kids in school. Lilja’s theory as to why there are still so many free agents out there, “They want to drive down salaries.  At the same time, I believe that there are many teams that want to attract younger players and give them a chance to play”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Shean Donovan is hoping to get one more shot at the NHL. He’s 49 games short of 1,000. He’s talked to a couple teams, not no solid offers yet. He has 2 offers in Europe but will wait it out for a bit.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The 33-year Fernando Pisani is still hoping to play in the NHL next season, on a 1-way contract. He’s unsure if he’d take a 2-way deal or a training camp invite.

Afinogenov to KHL … Where could Niemi end up? Mitchell taking physicals … “Nothing to report” on Kariya to Anaheim

  • Noah Love of the National Post: Love offers a few guesses as to where Niemi could end up: Colorado, Washington, NY Islanders, Dallas, and Edmonton. Teams with cap issues that could use Niemi: Philadelphia, New Jersey, Ottawa, Montreal, and Chicago.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Willie Mitchell has taken physicals for a few teams. He could sign soon, and the deal could include performance bonuses because of the injuries he’s dealt with in the past. Russo thinks he could get a 1 year deal worth between $1-1.5 million plus bonuses. It won’t be to Minnesota. Washington and San Jose are possibilities. He’s met with Vancouver already.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Peter Forsberg will be skating with MoDo, testing out injured foot once again. The Flyers, Rangers, Washington and Colorado could be interested teams if he attempts an NHL comeback.
  • Chris Custance of the Sporting News: So it’s safe to say that Cristobal Huet won’t be back the Blackhawks next season. His agent is working hard to keep him in the NHL, and not in the minors or Europe/KHL, which will be extremely hard. He’s working with the ‘Hawks to find a “reasonable destination” for Huet. Europe seems the most likely landing spot, with Hawks paying his full salary (won’t count against the cap).

5 Options for Niemi … Pronger has knee surgery … Theodore to the Preds?

  • Tom Awad of Puck Prospectus/ESPN: 5 options as to where Antti Niemi could end up next season. 1. Washington Capitals: They have $5 million in cap space. Both Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth are only 22 years old. 2. Edmonton Oilers: Have 3 goalies under contract but none may be #1’s. Nikolai Khabibulin may not play much this year due to injury and legal problems. 3. Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens still haven’t been able to sign Carey Price. Have just over $4 million in cap room. 4. San Jose Sharks: Antero Niittymaki and Thomas Greiss are their planned goalies for this season. Have about $3.7 million in cap room. Would like to add a top 4 defenseman. 5. New York Islanders: Their current goalies are Dwayne Roloson and Rick DiPietro. DiPietro health is always question. They have over $20 million in cap space, and are under the cap floor.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Chris Pronger had arthroscopic surgery on his knee last week, and should be ready for training camp.
  • EJ Hradek via twitter: The Chicago Blackhawks are still looking for a defenseman according to Stan Bowman.
  • Jay Gold via twitter: Jose Theodore and the Nashville Predators are talking, 1 year around $1.5 million. The Predators want to lock up Hornqvist first.

More on the Flyers goalie situation … Leafs and Blue Jackets interested in Patrick Sharp …

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Carchidi thinks the Flyers should re-sign Leighton and go after a ‘more proven goalie’. Brian Boucher is still under contract for one more year (at a reasonable number), and they could try to get him through waivers, as injuries happen and he’s still a capable goalie if they need him. Jeff Carter’s name will continue to circulate the rumor mill as the Flyers are deep in capable centers (Richards, Danny Briere, and Giroux). LA’s Quick and Bernier are mentioned, with Bernier seeming to get the nod as the Kings ‘goalie of the future’. They could make a bid for Cory Schneider (for a defenseman), but he may be more for the future and not the ‘proven goalie’. They could ask Gagne if he’d waive his no trade to go to Montreal for Carey Price (would have to send more to Montreal in my opinion). The safest option might be to go after UFA Dan Ellis. The 30-year old Ellis posted a 2.69 GAA and .909 SV% last season with the Predators, where he made $2 million as mainly a backup to Pekka Rinne. If the Flyers want to spend more, they could look at Evgeny Nabokov or Marty Turco.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets have shown interest in the Blackhawks Patrick Sharp. Sharp has a cap hit of $3.9 million, with 2 years remaining on his contract. The ‘Hawks could interested in a high draft pick or top prospect. I think the Leafs could offer the option of also taking on another unwanted contract, but probably not one of the big ones as they don’t have a ton of salary room themselves (they are not going to bury 3-4 big contracts in the minors as per many Torontians wishes). Their is speculation that the Oilers could be interested in Kris Versteeg and his $3 million salary, 2 years remaining. UFA’s John Madden, Nick Boyton, and Kim Johnsson are as good as gone.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza appears to be available for trade before his ‘no-trade clause’ kicks in on July 1st. GMs are doing some tire-kicking with regards to trade talks according to Kings GM Dean Lombardi. Warren wonders if the Senators and Oilers would consider a similar trade as the Heatley offer, Spezza for Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano andLadislav Smid (suggested elsewhere in the past)? Would the Blue Jackets be interested in Spezza to center Rick Nash (I think the Sens would want the 4th overall pick)? Could the Florida Panthers do deal involving Spezza and Nathan Horton plus others?
  • Andrew Gross of The Record: Gross thinks that the Capitals will likely look at trading Alexander Semin and his $6 million cap hit (he signed a 1-year deal with the Caps during the season). I think this might be a good move for the Caps as if would shed $6 million and allow them to bring in some depth from trading Semin, as well as any other deals they could make. To get full value for Semin, the team acquiring him may want to get an extension in place before they make the deal, similar as to what has been talked about in a Tomas Kaberle trade. Now before Leafs fans start thinking of a Semin for Kaberle, I doubt it would happen. Sure, Semin is extremely skilled but he is really soft, more so than Phil Kessel. I don’t think Semin is what Burke is looking for, though I could be wrong. Kaberle would interest the Capitals (could you image that PP of Kaberle, Green, Ovechkin, Backstom and anyone else?). I could see Semin to someone, and a separate or 3 team deal with Kaberle heading to Washington.
  • Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: The Red Wings offered Todd Bertuzzi a 2 year contract, but it may not be more than the $1.5 million he made last season (probably closer to $1 million), so he may test the market to see what he can get elsewhere. After signing their RFAs, they’ll need find the best player possible who’ll sign for $1 million or less, on a short term contract. Several names that have been mentioned; Freddy Modin but he’ll probably want more money, same goes for Owen Nolan. Two front runners could be Mike Comrie if he could commit to a 2-way game, and Arron Asham.
  • TSN: Back on March 2nd, the Philadelphia Flyers offered Peter Forsberg a contract to join the team for the remainder of the season, but he rejected it do to injuries and “wasn’t in good enough shape to join.” As in typical Forsberg fashion, he hasn’t ruled out a return to the NHL but he still doesn’t “know if I can come back and play hockey again”.

Blueline Help Coming for the Bruins? No NHL Return for Forsberg? Lidstrom Back Next Year?

  • Darren Dreger via Twitter: The Bruins will be looking to add a defenseman when the Olympic roster freeze is over.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: One of Haggerty’s sources has told him that the Bruins main target could be Predators defenseman, Dan Hamhuis. Nashville may be asking too much for him though. Aaron Ward is also another possibility, but more of fall back I think. Other possibilities could be Ryan Whitney (though he’s still under contract for a couple more seasons), Dennis Grebeshkov from the Oilers, and James Wisniewski of the Ducks.
  • Elliott Pap in the Vancouver Province: Peter Forsberg says he’s at the Olympics to play for Team Sweden and not to test the waters to return to the NHL next year. “I kind of doubt,” Forsberg said when asked about a possible NHL comeback. “It’s not what I’m thinking about right now. No.”
  • Detroit Free Press: Nicklas Lidstrom will be turning 40 in April, and his contract expire at the end of the season. Will he retire? He’s been dodging questions on the topic. “I haven’t thought much about it,” said Lidstrom.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche may look to shed a Dman or 2, with the names Clark, Salei, and Liles the most likely to be moved for draft picks.

Around the Boards: Forsberg staying in Sweden, Toews-Kane-Keith signing today? Filatov back to KHL?

    • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Canucks GM Mike Gillis informed reporters that Peter Forsberg won’t be coming Canucks, or any other NHL club, instead opting to with Modo for the remainder of the season.
    • Chric Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Tuesday could be a big day for the Chicago Blackhawks as they might be announcing that they have signed all 3 of their big restricted free agents. Its been out there for a couple days that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were close to resigning, but it appears that Duncan Keith is close as well. I’m definitely interested in these contracts, and to see how they’ll manage the cap next season. Next years cap is expected to be slightly lower than the $56.8 million this year, but without including these 3, their 2010-11 cap number is around $43 million for 13 players.
    • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Penguins: The hockey gods are punishing the Penguins now for winning the Cup last season, as they’ve lost another defenceman to injury. Alex Goligoski will be out for 2 to 3 weeks with an undisclosed injury. Goligoski joins defenceman Gonchar, Letang and Orpik, and forwards Kennedy, Kunitz and Talbot. Some good news should be coming soon as several players are close to returning.
    • Tom Reed and Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Unhappy with playing and being a healthy scratch, Nikita Filatov of the Blue Jackets could be on his way to the CSKA Moscow of the KHL. The Blue Jackets and Filatov are expected to meet today to discuss him staying with the club. The former 6th overall pick in 2008 has been in the doghouse for his lack of competitive play, and is averaging about 8 minutes on the 4th line.
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin practiced yesterday and is expected to return tonight against the New York Rangers.

Around the Boards: Forsberg, Malkin returns but Kunitz out,

    • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: It must a Swedish thing. Peter Forsberg seems to be as indecisive as Mats Sundin. Forsberg still isn’t sure if he’ll return to the NHL and may opt to stay in Sweden and play with Modo.
    • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Good news for the Penguins, Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup. Bad news for the Penguins, Chris Kunitz will miss 2 weeks with a nagging lower body injury.
    • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
      • Scott Niedermayer doesn`t want to be traded, nor do the Ducks want to trade him. They`d like him to retire a Duck.
      • The Coyotes scouted Chris Chelios but have decided not move any further with it.
      • Contract talks with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are going well and are both are close to re-signing.
      • Teams have inquired about Fabian Brunnstrom, but the Stars are not trying to trade him.

Around the Boards: Forsberg, Jagr, Ovechkin and Booth

    • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Add the Vancouver Canucks to the list of potential teams interested in Peter Forsberg. “First of all, he needs to find out if he can still play,” Gillis said. “If he can, we’re definitely interested. I’ve known his agent, Don Baizley, for a long time and I think we’d be on his short list if Peter decides he wants to play.” The Canucks have sent 2 scouts watch him play in a tournament this weekend.
    • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Edmonton Oilers still have an interest in bringing Jaromir Jagr in to the fold. “Jags and I text back and forth. I talked to him about six weeks ago,” Renney said. “He’s on our radar. He has NHL years ahead of him. No question.”
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin will be out for at least 2 more games. He returned yesterday to the ice for a skating session.
    • Steve Gorten of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: It looks like David Booth will be allowed to begin light exercises over the next couple days. Booth would love to return November 20th to face the Red Wings in his hometown.

Around the Boards: Forsberg, Lehtonen, and Kessel

    • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers have confirmed their interest in Peter Forsberg. “Yes, we have interest in Forsberg,” GM Glen Sather said. “From the reports we’ve been getting, the foot is much better than it was a year ago.” I see the Colorado Avalanche and the Philadelphia Flyers as the leading NHL clubs to land Forsberg, based on his apparently loyalty to past teams, though I can see the Flyers having trouble luring him due to salary cap restraints. With the Avalanche off to such a hot start, I think they are the leading candidates. Washington provides the most intrigue for him, possibly playing with Ovechkin or Semin would interest anyone.
    • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Despite the injuries to Simon Gagne and Danny Briere, the Flyers are not interested in Forsberg.
    • The AP through The Globe and Mail: Kari Lehtonen, who’s already out recovering from back surgery, will undergo a second surgery and will be 6 to 8 weeks.
    • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Phil Kessel coming off his 10 shot Maple Leafs debut on Tuesday, found himself with a new centerman, John Mitchell, yesterday at practice. After 1 game Matt Stajan has possibly found himself off the Kessel-Blake line. Strange. Stajan worked okay with Kessel and Blake on Tuesday, but on occasion was too focused on getting Kessel than shooting at the partially open net.
    • Chric Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews practiced with teammates yesterday, and will be a game day decision.

Around the Boards: Eric Staal, Peter Forsberg, Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen

    • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Eric Staal has now joined Alex Ovechkin in the ‘week-to-week’ injury category. The Canes have really struggled this season with Staal in the lineup, and could be in even more trouble with out him. Cam Ward will need to step it up to keep his team in the games as their have even more trouble scoring.
    • Staff at the Denver Post: The KHL’s Ak Bars Kazan are trying to convince Peter Forsberg to sign with them. The Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche are reportedly interested in signing Forsberg as well.
    • Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun: If at first fails, try, and try, and try, again. Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen may find themselves as linemates again when the Flames face the Stars tonight.
    • Mark Medina of the LA Times: Alexander Frolov missed yesterday’s practice, and is questionable for tonight’s game due to a sore hip flexor.
