Canadiens GM candidates … Howson on draft, Nash … McQuaid OK … Bryzgalov out this weekend … P.A. likely gone
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Starting Goalies on March 31st, 2012
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun lists some potential candidates for the Canadiens GM: Julien BriseBois, Marc Bergevin, Francois Giguere, Vincent Damphousse, Claude Loiselle, Patrick Roy, Pat Brisson, Pierre McGuire, Andre Savard, Doug Risebrough and Pierre Lacroix. There has been talk that the Blue Jackets may want to move their top pick as the top 2 prospects are Russian, and they haven’t had much luck with Russians. GM Scott Howson thinks that is hogwash:
“What I will say to that speculation is that I think it would be close-minded of us, I think it would border on stupidity to not include any player just because they’re from Russia,” Howson told ESPN.com this week. “I think everybody is different. The fact that Zherdev and Filatov didn’t work out here will have no bearing on who we select in this upcoming draft.”
Howson knows they need to address their goaltending situation, and he lines their blueline. On Rick Nash:
“I’ll have a conversation with Rick after the year ends and see where he’s at, see where we’re at, and make a game plan moving forward,” said Howson.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid’s eye injury appears to only be minor, and no concussion was sustained. McQuaid was hit from behind by Jason Chimera the other night. He won’t play in either game this weekend, but should be back soon.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers likely won’t play Ilya Bryzgalov this weekend in either of their afternoon games against the Senators and Penguins. Sergei Bobrovsky is expected to start both games.
- BD Gallof via twitter: The more Gallof talks to people, the more likely it seems that P.A. Parenteau will sign somewhere else, cashing in on his first big payday. Parenteau will want to be paid like a top a line player, but the Islanders don’t include him there if their kids develop.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers tried to recall Magnus Paajarvi yesterday but the move was rejected as they’ve already used their 4 callups after the trade deadline. In February, Paajarvi was assigned to the AHL so that he’d be eligible from their playoffs, then immediately recalled. The Oilers also called up Linus Omark, Teemu Hartikainen and Chris VandeVelde.
“We believed we had confirmation to recall Magnus in one of our four call-ups after the trade deadline,” said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini. “The league informed us today the only way he could be recalled was under an emergency recall basis.”
- Mark Master via twitter: Leafs coach Randy Carlyle is not sure if Jonas Gustavsson will be able to go today.
Could change be coming for the Flames? Parenteau talks to start … Time running out for Hejduk, Morrow? Should Oils trade pick? Burke staying
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on March 28th, 2012
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun thinks the Flames need to re-tool, if not a total rebuild. Flames GM Jay Feaster is giving this group one last chance. If it doesn’t work, changes are coming. They will have 6 UFA s and 3 RFA at the end of the season. Jarome Iginla will have one more year at $7 million, and would he want to be around for another rebuild? They may need to have a “heart to heart” with Iginla after the season.
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Pending Islanders free agent P.A. Parenteau wants to remain with the club. Talks are likely to begin this week. Parenteau could be looking a deal in the $4 million per season range.
“I’ve said all along that I want to be here, and nothing’s changed,” he said. “I love these guys and I want to be here for when we turn it around.”
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk’s production has been non-existent in the 2nd half, and it could be the “the end of the line for the classy Avs captain.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars captiain Brenden Morrow has been moved down to the 4th line, and his minutes have been reduced. He’s been dealing with injuries all year, and it’s affecting his play. Heika asks the question if Morrow’s time in Dallas is coming to an end? He doesn’t think so.
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Former Lightning GM Brian Lawton said the Oilers should trade down in the draft.
“The time has come for the Edmonton Oilers to look to create another asset and if they do, in fact, end up with the number 2 pick, they should look to trade down. There are so many quality defencemen that are available. Morgan Reilly’s been injured this year but he’s out there. Mathew Dumba, very intriguing player. Ryan Murray, probably the top-rated guy in that group and, of course, the very last guy Griffin Reinhart.”
Marty McSorley said the Oilers should:
“Go out and draft the best player. … You can always make trades. You need assets, you need commodities within your organization.”
Fan voting: (as of 8:55 am on the 28th) 41.46 % – Draft the best player available, even if that’s a Russian forward. 35.79% – Trade it for as good a veteran defenseman as the team can get. 22.75% – Trade down a few spaces, then draft the best defenseman available.
- John Buccigross via twitter: Buccigross is hearing that college free agent J.T. Brown (UMD) is down to the Flyers, Bruins and Lightning.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Someone within MLSE doesn’t expect any of the new ownership to demand that Brian Burke be fired as the Leafs GM before the end of the 2013-14 season.
“You have two choices: you can trust your general manager or you can fire your general manager,” the insider said. “At the end of the day, you can criticize [MLSE] for not hiring the right GM. But the decisions are made by the general manager. They really are. Brian Burke is running the show.”
“[Burke] can do pretty well what he wants. Brian has no shackles of any consequence at all.”
Injury notes on Bryzgalov, Backstrom, Ehrhoff and Timonen … Some starting goalies for tonight
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on March 28th, 2012
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has a small chip fracture in his right foot. An MRI showed the fracture after 2 x-rays revealed nothing. He won’t require surgery and could be back playing by the weekend.
“We don’t think this is a serious injury,” Holmgren said. “It’s a chip off a weight-bearing bone, and the doctor has said it’ll be absorbed back into his system, and there’s no real risk here at all [to play]. It’s just he’s in a little bit of pain right now.”
- Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom passed his baseline test “with flying colors.” Backstrom has been out since Jan. 3rd, and has skated 14 of the past 15 days.
“We’ll see where it goes from here,” McPhee said. “We’re making sure he’s in good shape and he’s comfortable. It’s going to be his decision.”
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff left last night’s game in the 1st period with a knee injury.
“We’ll have our doctors evaluate him but it looks like he’s going to miss a little bit of time,” said coach Lindy Ruff. “It’s something we’ll get evaluated [today] and get a better idea.”
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timomen is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
- Iain MacIntyre via twitter: Cory Schneider will start in net tonight against the Avalanche.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Devan Dubnyk will start in net for the for the Oilers tonight against the Stars.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Jaroslav Halak will start in net on Thursday for the Blues.

- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Capitals lines: Ovechkin-Laich-Brouwer, Chimera-Perreault-Semin, Johansson-Halpern-Aucoin, Hendricks-Beagle-Ward/Knuble. Backstrom extra.

Radulov on plane for U.S. … Gomez expects to be bought out … Meszaros out 6-8 weeks … Thornton signs extension … Flames getting healthy
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 20th, 2012
- Alexander Radulov via twitter: Radulov tweeted (and included a photo) that he’s one a plane for New York, then to Nashville.
- TVA Sports (google translate): Canadiens forward Scott Gomez expects to be bought out by the team at the end of the season according to Patrice Brisebois, and that he might want to make a comeback with the Devils next year. Gomez has apparently told relatives this.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros will have surgery to remove a small disc fragment from his lower back and will be out 6 to 8 weeks.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have signed Shawn Thornton to a 2 year contract extension worth $1.1 million per year. GM Peter Chiarelli has talked about re-signing Gregory Campbell, Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly, Joe Corvo, Greg Zanon, Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If college defenseman Justin Schultz doesn’t take the Ducks offer, and becomes a UFA on July 1st, the Rangers will be interested. Rangers forward Brandon Prust has put contract extension talks on hold so he can just focus on playing.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens Mathieu Darche has been out with an inner-ear infection, but has also been battling concussion-like symptoms. “I had an inner-ear infection and we treated that with antibiotics, but when that cleared up, I still had symptoms,” Darche said. “So we looked at the symptoms and treated it as a concussion. Right now, I feel great and every day on the ice we ramp up the intensity and length of the workout. My wife is sick of me being at home, so I want to get back and play.” Darche hopes to begin practicing with teammates by the end of this week or early next week.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: The Flames are likely to get Tim Jackman, Lance Bouma and Chris Butler back in the lineup some time this week during their 3 game road trip.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: The Flames had no choice but to send Sven Baertschi back to junior because of the NHL-CHL player agreement. If/when the Winterhawks are out of the playoff, Baertschi can rejoin the Flames.
More on Radulov … Helm out 4-6 weeks … Wild injury updates … Pitkanen close … Canucks lineup changes and starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Starting Goalies on March 19th, 2012
4:45 PM:
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Radulov’s return to Nashville is conditioned on him returning to the KHL next year (from Medvedev via @plysenkov). He was allowed to buy out this year only with condition he’d be back. If not, he’d have to pay 2/3 of next years back. Radulov’s KHL salary for next year would be for around $5 million. KHL president Medvedev also implied that SKA will try to buy Radulov’s and Evgeni Kuznetsov’s rights. In response to my question to be clear, Chesnokov said that Radulov can re-sign with the Predators after the season, but has pay the 2/3rds back.
2:50 PM:
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Predators GM David Poile on Alexander Radulov:
“We’ve been in contact with Jay Grossman, Alex’s agent, throughout process of trying to return Alex to NSH and NHL.”
“Though the complicated process has yet to be concluded, every indication is Alex will be returning to NSH in near future.”
No updates are expected until tomorrow until at the earliest.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov wonders how Radulov was able to get out of his contract. He’s re-read the KHL rules and it looks impossible legally. Article 30 (7) – “No player can terminate contract from the start of playoffs until April 30.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun responds to Chesnokov that “no player under NHL contract is supposed to bolt to another league either.” Slava Malamud via twitter: Malamud notes that if KHL president Medvedev allowed Salavat to “skirt KHL rules,” may expect to see a favor back to SKA, possibly trading Radulov to SKA. One possibility could be the Radulov is traded to SKA, then signing Capitals prospect Evgeni Kuznetsov, with SKA promising not to go after Kuznetsov. Shawn Simpson via twitter: Simpson spoke with Val Kamesky. Radulov is heading to Nashville for this season, but must return to Ufa next year. Slava Malamud via twitter: Radulov return to the Predators won’t set a precedent as it’s a unique case in that he left before the KHL-NHL had an agreement with contract.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Mikko Koivu practiced yesterday and is listed as day-to-day. Niklas Backstrom’s groin injury is almost back to normal. Center Matt Cullen is expected back in the lineup against the Canucks.
- Helene St. James via twitter: Red Wings forward Darren Helm will be out 4-6 weeks with a 2nd degree MCL sprain.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller said that Joni Pitkanen could return to the lineup on Wednesday.
- Mike Heika via twitter: Stars Sheldon Souray and Radek Dvorak are probable for Tuesday.
- Helene St. James via twitter: Red Wings Nicklas Lidstrom did a few drills today at practice. It’s the most he’s done since his ankle injury.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Devils center Travis Zajac was on the ice this morning, but is not expected to play tonight.
- Chris Johnston via twitter: The Lightning have signed Sebastien Caron, who’ll have to clear waivers.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Rangers lines: Hagelin-Richards-Gaborik Dubinsky-Stepan-Callahan Zuccarello-Boyle-Mitchell Rupp-Fedotenko-Prust.
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Johan Franzen will be out of the Red Wings lineup tonight. Jimmy Howard will start in net.
- Jim Jamieson via twitter: Canucks forward Mason Raymond will be a healthy scratch. Alex Burrows will be back with the Sedin twins. Manny Malhotra is back in. Cory Schneider will start in net for the Canucks.
- Dave Lozo via twitter: Henrik Lundqvist will start in net for the Rangers.

- Slava Malamud via twitter: Reports out of Russia are that Alexander Radulov is leaning towards returning to the NHL, but the KHL leaders are doing their best to dissuade him.

Was Grabovski’s deal delayed? Canucks targeted teams for Hodgson deal … Injury notes on Duchene, Lupul, Armstrong, Dubinsky, Jagr, Jackman and Nikitin
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 7th, 2012
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Friedman thinks the Mikhail Grabovski’s deal could have been done a week or 2 ago but Burke may have wanted to see if he would get a crazy offer at the deadline. It’s rumored that the Stars wanted Cody Hodgson for Steve Ott. The Leafs tried to get Hodgson as well. The Canucks ‘targeted” a few clubs that they thought had the match they wanted. Friedman thinks they liked Brandon Sutter from the Hurricanes and John Carlson of the Capitals. Former Oilers Tom Gilbert said he didn’t demand a trade.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Matt Duchene injured his right ankle in the 3rd period of last night’s game. He’ll be re-evaluated today.
- Lance Hornby via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has an upper-body injury and Colby Armstrong has a broken nose.
- Andrew Gross of the Bergon Record: Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky left last night’s game in the first period after getting into a fight with Ryan Carter.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers Jakub Voracek got rocked by Niklas Kronwall last night. There was no injury update after the game as he was still be evaluated by doctors. Jaromir Jagr also left the game with a lower body injury.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Flames forward Tim Jackman left after 1 shift after taking a big hit from Alexei Emelin.
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Nikita Nikitin blocked a shot off the foot in the 1st period and did not return.
Rask out 4-6 weeks, Bruins sign Turco … Anderson conspiracy theory … Brown likely traded in offseason … Injury notes on Havlat, Markov and Timonen
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Starting Goalies on March 6th, 2012
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has a lower abdomen/groin strain, and will be out 4-6 weeks.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: The Bruins have signed goalie Marty Turco. Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Turco has to clear waivers, and he’s not eligible for the playoffs.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Senators GM Bryan Murray and Lightning GM Steve Yzerman are among the GMs who think that the red line should be brought back. Conspiracy Theory: Senators goalie Craig Anderson severed tendons on his right hand presumably from a knife cut, Anderson is right handed. “I really don’t care to talk about the details of it all,” Anderson told reporters in his first comments since the incident. “Freak accident. Happened in the kitchen. Leave it at that. Something you learn from. Unfortunately, it was a costly mistake.” The Kings got several offers for Dustin Brown at the trade deadline, but they decided to keep him for their playoff run. He’ll likely be traded in the offseason.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks winger Marty Havlat was skating on a line with Benn Ferriero and Brad Winchester yesterday. He’s getting closer and will be traveling with the team, but he’s not giving a timetable when he’ll return.
- Bill Beacon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov practiced without his ‘no-contact’ jersey yesterday:
“I’m cleared for contact,” he said. “I need a little bit more time to practice with the team and as soon as I feel ready to go I’m going to play.
“Of course I’m happy. I didn’t play for a long time. I just want to jump in there and feel the game and have fun. I miss the game a lot. I want to come back as soon as I can.”
He’ll travel with the team, but it’s not known if he’ll get in a game this week.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen is out with a back injury, but he isn’t expected to be out long.
- Steve Simmons via twitter: Brian Burke this morning on Newstalk 1010 radio when asked if his job was on the line: “I think its an ignorant question and a gutless one.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Richard Bachman will start in net for the Stars tonight against the Canucks.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Ben Bishop is expected to start tonight against the Lightning.
Lightning will likely turn to Schneider … Injury notes: Parise, Kindl, Howard, Timonen, Meszaros, Bogosian, Comeau and Downie
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 5th, 2012
- Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times: Since the Lightning weren’t interested in giving up a 2nd round pick for Ben Bishop, speculation is that they’ll turn to Cory Schneider in the summer. They have 2 1st round picks and likely 4 2nd rounders. Schneider has a career 32-14-4 record with a 2.36 GAA and .924 SV%.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils winger Zach Parise injured his hand yesterday, that may required him to get x-rays. He doesn’t think, and hopes it isn’t broken. He was hit in the hand with a Milan Jurcina shot.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings defenseman Jakub Kindl tried to play yesterday, but only last 2 shifts before leaving with an upper-body injury. More importantly for the Red Wings, Jimmy Howard left after the 1st period with a lower-body injury, and is day-to-day.
- Philadelphia Flyers via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren: Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros will be out indefinitely with lower body injuries.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets will be without defenseman Zach Bogosian for at least another week after re-aggravating his injury.
- Randy Sportak via twitter: Flames forward Blake Comeau is officially day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Roger Millions via twitter: Comeau looks to be out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Avalanche forward Steve Downie has a shoulder injury, this timetable won’t be known until today.
GMs on the hotseat … Trades that didn’t happen … Injury notes on Toews, Gomez, Hedman, Bogosian, and Vokoun … Cherry goes off on Burke (video)
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on March 4th, 2012
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: A couple GMs who could be under the gun this offseason: Scott Howson, Pierre Gauthier, George McPhee, Brian Burke, and Dean Lombardi. The Sharks might be willing to trade Joe Pavelski, prospects and picks for Rick Nash after the season. A Nash to Rangers deal didn’t happen because they wouldn’t include Chris Kreider. The Bruins and Blackhawks tried to get Sheldon Souray at the deadline. The Avalanche and Canucks tried to get Steve Ott. The Flyers were close to trading Sergei Bobrovsky, but decided against it due to Ilya Bryzgalov’s inconsistent play. The Lightning, Maple Leafs and Blackhawks were looking for goaltending. Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk was almost traded at the deadline. Sources say that 3 or 4 teams were bidding for him, including the Maple Leafs. The Ducks would have moved Teemu Selanne, but he didn’t want to go anywhere. The Rangers, Sharks, Bruins and Kings were interested. Sergei Gonchar could be moved in the offseason.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Predators weren’t shopping goalie Anders Lindback at the deadline, but he could be moved after the season. They could get a 2nd round pick at the draft.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Jonathan Toews has missed 6 games with a concussion, and will be out at least 2 more. He hasn’t started skating again, but has done some off-ice workout. There is a chance defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson (concussion symptoms) plays on Tuesday.
- Toronto Sun: Canadiens forward Scott Gomez suffered an eye injury in the 3rd period against Minnesota the other night and is out indefinitely. He may have played his last game in a Canadiens uniform. There is the outside chance that he’s traded (2 years left on contract, $7.3 million cap hit), but it’s more likely he’ll be bought out or buried in the AHL. If he’s bought out, he’d have about a $1.6 million cap hit for the next 4 years.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: Tuukka Rask’s injury is believed to be his left knee, which was previously scoped.
- Ira Haufman of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman missed his 4th straight game with an upper-body injury, but he’s expected to practice this week, and could be cleared to play for Tuesday. Their trainer said it is not a concussion.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defesneman Zach Bogosian left yesterday’s practice early after aggravating an injury. He’ll be a game-time decision on Monday.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Leafs put Jay Rosehill on re-entry waivers yesterday.
- Sky Kerstein via twitter: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun is day-to-day with a lower body injury.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen may not return until the final 2 weeks of the season.
- Don Cherry’s Coaches Corner: Cherry goes off Brian Burke’s lack of Ontario players on the Maple Leafs roster.
