- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Wild have dropped out of the top 8 in the West after losing 14 of 16.
“We’ll keep looking to upgrade the talent. We’ll move whatever we have to move if it makes sense. Not everybody’s untouchable. And certainly we have a lot of prospects we’re not going to move, but there’s assets we have that we can move to make our team better if we can find the right fit.”
They’ve been hit with injuries to their top 6. They would like to improve their top 6, but they aren’t the only ones. The Ducks have dangled Bobby Ryan. The Sabres have Drew Stafford, Derek Roy and Brad Boyes. The Rangers have Wojtek Wolski and Erik Christensen. The Blue Jackets have Vaclav Prospal. The Oilers have Ales Hemsky. The Hurricanes have Tuomo Ruutu.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets could be looking to move some of their future UFAs, which includes: Chris Mason, Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Johnny Oduya, Randy Jones, Mark Flood and Derek Meech. Though some of their UFAs could receive contract extensions or possibly brought back in the summer.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: A list of possible candidates for the Canadiens GM position if they decide to replace Pierre Gauthier: “J.Martin (owed $3mil), J.Brisebois, Risebrough, Ferguson, Loiselle, McGuire, Bergevin.”
- Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer is hearing that Taylor Hall could be out for the year. Ryan Rishaug via twitter: Rumors at this point are untrue, at this point that hasn’t been decided. Taylor Hall via twitter: “The reports that I’m out for the season aren’t true. I am going to be back as soon as possible. “
- Jerry DiPaola of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang could return to the lineup for the 1st time in 2 months tonight. “It’s coach’s decision,” Letang said of his return. “I know I am ready to go. I have been resting. I have been doing some treatment. I am comfortable. Otherwise I wouldn’t be on the ice.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu still hopes he’ll be able to participate in the All-Star game, and the NHL has agreed to hold off on naming a replacement.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames forward Curtis Glencross is week-to-week with a knee injury.
- David Pollak via twitter: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe has facial fractures, but is not feeling any concussion-like symptoms.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: There isn’t much optimism from Capitals when it comes to defenseman Tom Poti being able to return to the NHL. “Tom’s been working at it and improving but I don’t know if he’ll ever get to the point where he can play again,” McPhee told reporters Tuesday. “As I said in the summer, we weren’t counting on it.”
- Dustin Leed via twitter: Sergei Bobrovsky will start in net tonight for the Flyers against the Islanders.
- Sean Fitz-Gerald via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will start in net for the Maple Leafs against the Wild.

- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Taylor Hall will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a left shoulder injury.
“I thought I was going to be out for a shorter period of time,” he said, “but two to four weeks isn’t bad. It’s not like I’m missing a huge chunk of games, where it would take me three to four games to really get back into the swing of things.
“I want to get back as quick as I can, obviously. I just have to try and rehab it as quick as possible .. make it as strong as possible.”
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Other coaching situations to watch are in Calgary, Anaheim and Colorado. Eric Francis reported over the weekend that there won’t any changes in Calgary. The Ducks budget is stretched, which may may be evident in them passing up on Blake Comeau and his pro-rated $2.5 million salary. Flames GM Jay Feaster on Jarome Iginla: “He is part of the solution…We are not trading him.” The Wild and Predators made claims on Comeau, who the Flames ended up getting. The Islanders didn’t want to take on any salary in a Comeau trade, so they put him on waivers.
- James Murphy of ESPN: Murphy doesn’t think the Bruins are considering trading Tuukka Rask now or in the near future. He is their future starting goalie. David Krejci will be a UFA at seasons end, but he may not able to expect “big money.” Murphy thinks that if Krejci continues to be average, they could explore what his trade value is, though he doesn’t think they’ll give up on him yet. Murphy doesn’t know if the Bruins have held contract talks with Chris Kelly.
- Darren Millard via twitter: Nick Kypreos was told by an NHL executive that the Ducks are shopping Bobby Ryan.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks Bobby Ryan found himself practicing with the 3rd line yesterday along with Ben Maxwell and Niklas Hagman. Matt Beleskey was on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Ducks backup Dan Ellis had an ultrasound yesterday on his groin injury.
- Luke DeCock: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford acknowledged that their budget woes cost them the ability to get/keep veteran leadership. He mentioned Eric Cole and Ray Whitney.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier was patrolling the press box during the Kings-Sharks game last night.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings forward Dustin Penner missed his 8th straight game last night, but he could return on Thursday. Alec Martinez is at least a week away from returning. Scott Parse will have season ending hip surgery. He had hip surgery last year as well.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Even with the possible return of Penner on Thursday, Terry Murray’s comments sounded like Dustin Brown could see more time at left wing.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defensemen Tobias Enstrom and Randy Jones are back skating. Enstrom is expected to be out until after Christmas. Jones could be 8 or 9 days away. Brett Festerling and Derek Meech are out indefinitely. Ron Hainsey hasn’t been able to go since last Wednesday.
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: With Cory Schneider starting for the Canucks tonight, it makes a strong statement that he could be the number 1 goalie in Vancouver.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Curtis Sanford will start in net for the Blue Jackets tonight against the Canucks.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators tonight against the Jets.

- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom suffered a broken collar bone and will be out indefinitely. Enstrom was injured on Monday after taking a hit from Panthers Jack Skille.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Randy Jones left last night’s game in the 3rd period after blocking a shot off inside of his right ankle. Forward Nik Antropov blocked a shot with his hand, he did return to the game, but his status for Saturday is not 100%.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen was originally thought to be out 3 to 4 weeks, but that may not be the case according to Paul Maurice. Jokinen had 2 MRIs on Wednessday night and revealed that the injury was not as serious as originally thought. Maurice said it’s closer to day-to-day than week-to-week.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson has been out with a concussion since last Saturday, and has no idea when he may return.
“If I’m at home with the kids, I get a little light-headed and I have to sit down for a little bit, and then I feel good again,” Alfredsson said Thursday, speaking publicly for the first time since the hit. “Until that’s gone, I’m not going to do anything physical.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers are getting close to putting defenseman Marc Staal on LTIR, saving them $3.975 million in cap space. Once he’s put on it, the Rangers could recall Mats Zuccarello from the AHL. Wojtek Wolski suffered a groin injury last night.
- Josh Yohe via twitter: Penguins Ben Lovejoy broke his wrist and is out indefinitely.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars forward Steve Ott has a hip pointer and could miss the next 2 games.

- Mike Vogl via twitter: The Capitals have re-signed forward Mike Knuble to a 1 year, $2 million deal.
- Rich Chere via twitter: There have been no more contract talks between Zach Parise and the NJ Devils but he said he’ll be back, “For sure. I’m restricted.” Tom Gulliti via twitter: Parise will skate later this week, and will stay in New Jersey until end of May, skating a couple times a week.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Devils goalie Johan Hedberg will play in the NHL next year or retire, won’t go play in Europe.
- George Richards via twitter: Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun said he wouldn’t mind returning to Florida.

- Pierrre LeBrun via twitter: The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed power play specialist Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one year deal.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: With Michael Leighton clearing waivers and going to the AHL, the Philadelphia Flyers have $3.6 million of available cap space for future acquisitions.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The New Jersey Devils have moved Patrick Elias to center a line with Ilya Kovalchuk. Johan Hedberg and Jose Theodore will be between the pipes tonight.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche may look to add another defenseman after the loss of Kyle Quincey. The Avs have the cap space to add someone with size and toughness.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kyle Wellwood had his Atlant’s (KHL) contract terminated for performance issues. Likely will try to land a deal in the NHL, similar to what Marek Svatos did.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Mathieu Garon likely to get the start for the Blue Jackets.

- Tampa Tribune: The Tampa Bay Lightning could get winger Steve Downie back in the lineup on Tuesday. Downie has been out since Dec. 2nd with a high ankle injury, had been lobbying to get in the lineup last night. Goalie Mike Smith is also close to returning, he’s been out since Dec. 20th with a knee sprain. Randy Jones missed last night’s game (last 2 of 3) with an upper body injury.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Pierre LeBrun mentioned in last night’s Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove (video is at bottom of this post) that the Toronto Maple Leafs received an offer for Kris Versteeg.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Marek Zidlicky’s shoulder injury may be more serious than originally hoped. GM Chuck Fletcher, “I’ll just say right now he’s going to be out for a while. We still have to speak with the doctors and look at the alternatives we have here. But it’s a significant injury.” Surgery could be an option.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel: The Florida Panthers will continue to look at trading Steve Reinprecht if no one claims him off waivers by Monday. He’s in his 2nd year of a 3 year, $6.52 million deal.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf will see a specialist on Tuesday or Wednesday where a timetable for his return could be determined. Getzlaf has a nasal sinus fracture.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: The Edmonton Oilers received some good news when it was revealed that Jordan Eberle’s ankle was not broken. When he’ll return is not known yet.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers are still carrying 3 goalies, as they don’t want to put Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher on waivers, and Sergei Bobrovsky has been playing really well despite playing only 3 games in the last 9. “It’s all about timing. When someone has a goalie go down, I’m sure our phone will start ringing,” said a Flyers official. “Three goalies just don’t work, long-term. It’s just not good.”

- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby left practice early yesterday with an injury, same went for Chris Kunitz. Evgeni Malkin didn’t practice. “They are all dealing with some aches, pains and soreness,” Penguins coach Dan Byslma said, but they all should take the morning skate today. Though no one would say what was bothering Crosby, he been bothered by hip and groin soreness throughout the season.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Tampa Bay Lightning are still unsure when Simon Gagne will return to the lineup. He’s been out 14 games with a neck strain, but is being bothered now by “forehead or sinus pressure.” The Lightning put defenseman Matt Smaby on IR, and Randy Jones is playing with an injured foot.
- Randy Sportak via twitter: Red Wings Dan Cleary left last night’s game in the second period with an upper-body injury.
- Eric Stephens of OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks put Josh Green on waivers yesterday and recalled Dan Sexton and Brandon McMillan. If Green clears waivers he’ll be sent to Syracuse of AHL.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Philadelphia Flyers traded Pat Maroon and David Laliberte to the Anaheim Ducks for Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson. Syvret had been with the Flyers organization before he signed in Anaheim. Pat Maroon was sent home from the Flyers AHL team a couple weeks ago for “behavioral issues.”
Changes Coming in LA and Buffalo … Devils Coaching Options

- Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times: The LA Kings have 9 free agents to deal with this off-seaosn, 6 UFAs and 3 RFAs, and there is a chance at all 6 UFAs won’t be back. Alexander Frolov could be looking for $5 million a year, not likely getting that in LA, or maybe from anyone else in the NHL. Freddie Modin wasn’t very productive since being acquired at the deadline. Jeff Halpren didn’t have much success either. Poor defensive play since December injury, and coming off a $3 million contract may have paved the wayRandy Jones to move on. The game may be getting too quick for Sean O’Donnell. Raitis Ivanans may not be worth the roster spot anymore. Their 3 restricted free agents, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse, and Rich Clune, all made under $600,000 and wouldn’t be getting big raises, so they might be back.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza’s no movement clause starts on July 1st, and fans are starting to hope that he’s traded. But fans may not get their wish as both he, and the Sens would like to have him wearing a Senators uniform next season.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Anton Volchenkov’s starting point will be Mike Komisarek’s 5 year, $22.5 million, and someone will give that or more. Friedman thinks Halak won’t re-sign in Montreal unless it’s for a boat load of cash. Wherever Carey Price ends up next year, he needs a veteran goalie to mentor him. Doug Risebrough is in the running for the Lightning GM job, and could be a candidate for San Jose if the organization goes in a different direction. The Lightning’s new GM will decide the fate of Vinny Lecavalier, new owner Jeffrey Vinik might be open to keeping him.
- Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: Changes could be coming with the Buffalo Sabres, GM Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff could be on the hotseat. Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy underacheived. Trade deadline acquisition Raffi Torres was a scratch for their elimination game. The team in general is on the small side, without the physical side that you need in the playoffs.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils will be searching for a new coach at Lemaire retired after one year. Brooks thinks the Devils should look inhouse and promote their AHL coach and long time Devil, John MacLean. Other candidates could be Ken Hitchcock, Bob Hartley, and Mike Keenan.

- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: The Detroit Red Wings offense took another hit last night with Valtteri Filppula broke his right wrist. He’ll be out for 6 to 8 weeks. Darren Helm may be given the first chance to replace Filppula on the 2nd line with Cleary and Bertuzzi.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: It looks like Marian Gaborik’s return to Minnesota will have to be postponed as it doesn’t look like he’ll be returning to the New York Rangers lineup.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Randy Jones was claimed off re-entry waivers by the Los Angeles Kings. Jones was in the final year of a 2 year, $5.5 million deal. Both the Flyers and Kings will have a $1.375 cap hit for Jones.
- Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said there is a good chance that Phil Kessel will make his Toronto debut on Tuesday versus Tampa Bay. Vesa Toskala was activated and may see action tomorrow. Joey MacDonald and rookie Viktor Stalberg were sent to the AHL’s Marlies. Jiri Tlusty was recalled to take Stalberg’s roster spot.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Carey Price will be making the start tonight, his first since October 17th. The Canadiens are also mixing up their top 2 lines: Andrei Kostitsyn, Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta; Mike Cammalleri, Tomas Plekanec and Maxim Lapierre.
There have been rumors floating around that the Canadiens and Blackhawks might be talking trade involving Carey Price and Cristobal Huet, but they don’t appear to be true.
