- Darren Dreger via twitter: Maple Leafs have a couple firm offers on a number of players. They are getting interest in their 2nd line but nothing is imminent.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: The Wings are looking to add a decent-sized forward. GM Ken Holland has had some talks but wasn’t close t a deal as of yesterday afternoon. Holland is not looking for a depth defenseman.
“I’ve talked to a few managers today, but nothing’s really cooking,” Holland said. “There’s not a lot of players (available). Maybe things change in the next 18 or 24 hours. We’ll see. So many teams are in the playoff hunt.”
Sabres Paul Gaustad and Canadiens Travis Moen could be options. Other players available are Sammy Pahlsson, Steve Ott, Mike Knuble, Mikael Samuelsson, David Jones, Daniel Winnik and T.J. Galiardi.

- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Obviously possible Rick Nash could move by tomorrow but it were close in any way do you think CBJ would’ve played him today?”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Teams that have the most interest in Nash don’t think he’ll be moved and are looking at other players.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Blue Jackets haven’t spoken with the Maple Leafs in days. Leafs will keep trying, but Gardiner remains untouchable.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Belief before the Maple Leafs loss to the Capitals that the Leafs interest in Nash was minimal, and they they were driving up the price for the Rangers.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Leafs, Rangers, and Sharks have offers in on Rick Nash, and have all said the offer could be better in the summer. The Rangers and Leafs are being aggressive as they have more parts to offer than the Sharks.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Sharks are still interested in Nash, but could probably make a better offer in the offseason. The Maple Leafs and Rangers are still in.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson should go after Derek Stepan over Brandon Dubinsky. Howson wants Chris Kreider, the Rangers best prospect. He also wants either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto, but McDonagh isn’t going anywhere. Dylan McIlray or Tim Erixon are also options. After the Carter deal, defense is not a top priority for Howson. He could use some 1st round picks to take a run at Canucks Cory Schneider this offseason. They already have their own and the Kings.

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the trade deadline just days away, Brian Burke is being squeezed. The teams is struggling (losing 7 of 8), and he’s hoping to make a deal at a reasonable price. Does he overpay for a Rick Nash or not given to the high prices for others? Columbus is squeezing Burke on Nash, same with demands for backup goalies, and what it would take for Dustin Brown. Burke has worked hard to accumulate prospects like Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Joe Colborne, Keith Aulie, Nazem Kadri and Jesse Blacker, and it’s difficult to package them off for a big-name expensive player. Does Burke trade away future players for short-term solutions, or avoid it all costs? Some want Nash or Brown now. The smartest decision may be to trade Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur, keep the young guys and regroup, and fire Wilson.
- Randy Starkman of the Toronto Star: Former NHLer Mike Peca thinks the Maple Leafs should go after Mike Ribeiro or Ryan Getzlaf.
“There’s so many spots where they can benefit from getting somebody. They’re waiting to see if Reimer will shake out to be a good goalie. I think the one thing they do need is a centre. Somebody who might be available is a guy like Mike Ribeiro from Dallas, who’s just a good guy with the puck and can move it around and seems to have a personality and a swagger that can hold up to the pressures of Toronto. I don’t know if (Ryan) Getzlaf will still be available. He’d be a guy that’d be a perfect fit in Toronto. But I think for them to get a guy who can be a No. 1 centre, play those minutes, distribute the puck is somebody the Leafs would love to get. They talk about Rick Nash, but then that’s adding another scoring winger without addressing what the need is: A bona fide No. 1 centre that’s going to anchor that top line for years to come.”
Darren Pang thinks Josh Harding and Chris Mason may be good options for the Maple Leafs
“You need a goaltender there that you’re not going to give up too much for … the guys that are unrestricted. Josh Harding would be a good fit there … He’s unrestricted at the end of the year, likely not to re-sign there, can win hockey games, can play the puck and I think he would be a good fit for Toronto. A guy like Chris Mason in Winnipeg, a veteran guy who’s been down the stretch and helped get the Blues in the playoffs a couple of years ago, he’s a great teammate. He would be a stabilizing force for those young goaltenders.”

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Kings forward Dustin Brown may now be available, which puts more heat on the Blue Jackets to make a decision on Nash. The Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Flyers are just a few teams that would be interested. Jim Matheson via twitter: If Brown is available, Matheson thinks Eastern Conference teams will be all over him even with the 2 remaining years. The Bruins and Capitals could be interested. Tim Panaccio via twitter: A source said that the Flyers can’t get serious on Brown because of salary cap issues. Andy Strickland via twitter: “In a salary cap world where every GM wants value for the $ why would LA trade Dustin Brown? Has maybe the best contract in the NHL.”

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying the San Jose Sharks are looking into deals for Blue Jackets Rick Nash and Jeff Carter. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is still looking to get a 1st round pick, a good roster player, and the top prospect in that organization for Nash. For the Sharks the roster player may be Logan Couture or Joe Pavelski. Carter may cost a 1st round pick and to take on more salary with another player. A source said Nash could cost the Kings Jonathan Bernier or Jack Johnson, Tyler Toffoli and a 1st round pick. The Sabres could start dealing soon, but don’t expect to see Ryan Miller trade. Paul Gaustad and Derek Roy are getting interest. Teams are waiting to see if the Avalanche will become sellers, and if Milan Hejduk will becomes available. If the Capitals become sellers, Mike Knuble might become available, and could get interest from the Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings, and Blackhawks. Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik was a healthy scratch and may have interest from the Canucks and Blues. The Oilers and Ales Hemsky have held discussions on a multi-year deal. The Kings, Rangers, Bruins and Sharks may be interested in Hemsky.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke on TSN Radio yesterday:
“I’m not sure that we’re not going to be in the market [for a goalie] before we’re done,” Burke said. “It’s something that we have to at least explore what the price tags are. The fact is we’re losing games because we’re not stopping the puck enough. … We’ve got to get our goaltenders to stop the puck.”
Burke made it clear that he’s looking for immediate help and not prospects. Mirtle lists potential goalies that may be available: Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier, Josh Harding, Evgeni Nabokov, Ben Bishop, Curtis Sanford, and Antero Niittymaki.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The Devils could use some help on the blueline due to Henrik Tallinder’s and Adam Larsson’s injuries. Travis Zajac’s injury may lead them to look at adding a center. The Devils may not have room in their ‘secret payroll budget’ to fit in Marek Zidlicky’s contract. Canadiens Chris Campoli could be an option. Since the Jets are back in the playoff hunt, Johnny Oduya is likely off the market. Bryan Allen, Jaroslav Spacek and Lubomir Vishnovsky would be expensive to get.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks Jonathan Toews’ has an upper-body injury and won’t play tonight. Coach Joel Quenneville said he’s day-to-day and they hope he can skate on Friday. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson skated for the 4th straight day and could return tonight.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is still looking for a top 4 puck moving defenseman, and a veteran forward, preferably a center. He’s said he’d move picks and prospects, and has a tendency to look for players who are not just rentals. Stars Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro may be available, but their cost could be high. Blackhawks Jimmy Hayes is said to interest teams. The Hawks were said to have interest in Kyle Quincey and Nicklas Grossman before they were dealt. The Leafs could be looking to move Cody Franson or Luke Schenn.

State of the Colorado Avalanche: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

The trade deadline is less than a week away and already the Colorado Avalanche have pulled off a trade, sending RFA defense-man Kyle Quincey to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for RFA forward Steve Downie (Tampa then flips Quincey to Detroit for a 1st). So, what does this mean for the Avs? Well, according to TSN analyst Pierre LeBrun via Twitter, another NHL GM has told him that “..’Colorado could be quite busy over the next week.’ Trade 1 is down..”. I would say that the Avs will be buyers AND sellers. Look for the Avs to be making more similar moves as the Quincey-Downie trade. They have a lot of players who are not showing up every game – and it’s costing the team in the standings. I would look at those players to be the first to leave for either draft picks or other roster players to help with the scoring.
They have a good, young core of players down the middle (Duchene, O’Reilly, Stastny) who are all play-makers. They desperately need scoring. More importantly, they need scoring WINGERS. And grit. Their top wingers are Landeskog (although a great player, hes still so young and has much to learn), Hejduk (who’s career is clearly dwindling) ,and Mueller (who seems to be injured every other week).
State of the San Jose Sharks: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

For the past 5 seasons the San Jose Sharks have been buyers at the trade deadline and this year looks no different. In the past Sharks GM Doug Wilson has done a lot of tweaking of the team, by acquiring “rental” players like Dominic Moore. But this year hopefully is different for the Sharks. Because Wilson traded away 2- Top 6 Forwards in Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi the team began the season with just 5 legitimate top 6 forwards.
With the anticipated Martin Havlat injury, that depth as gone down to 4 Legitimate top 6 forwards. With no decent minor league forwards prospects on the horizon the team has had to use 3rd and 4th line players like Tommy Wingels, Benn Ferriero, and Torrey Mitchell on the top line at times this year. A legitimate Stanley Cup contender can not win with player like that on your top line.
While there are names like Rick Nash out their, I doubt Wilson would be willing to pull the strings on a deal that would in the long run benefit the team, but in the short run might hurt the team. I for one would sacrifice this year as I don’t see this team as anywhere near a Stanley Cup contender. While this will not go over well with Sharks fans, many of whom are disenchanted with Sharks management, I see Wilson doing more of his “tweaking” come deadline day. I could see him making a run at Tumuo Ruutu, or Ales Hemsky, neither of whom is a long term solution for the team. I could also see Wilson standing pat and claiming he is happy with the team the way it is currently assembled.
State of the Columbus Blue Jackets: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

With only 23 games remaining in their season, the Columbus Blue Jackets sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, a place that’s been their home for the majority of the season. That being said, the Jackets are the biggest sellers this trade deadline, and the only thing Scott Howson has to look forward to this June is the possibility of adding top prospect Nail Yakupov.
Columbus seems set for another few years of rebuild and that’s not something that 27-year-old captain Rick Nash wants to wait for. He has not openly admitted to wanting a trade, but when asked about being traded, he said “Right now I’m a Blue Jacket.” The words “right now” tell it all and whether Nash is traded before the deadline or at the draft, he seems to be on his way out of Columbus
Many different teams have been linked to Nash, who brings a yearly cap hit of $7.8 million until 2018, but most often it has been the first place Rangers, the Maple Leafs, the Kings, and as always the Philadelphia Flyers.
State of the Washington Capitals: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

Through 59 games of the 2011/12 NHL season, the perennial playoff contending Washington Capitals sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a decidedly average 29-24-5 record. The Caps look like a shell of the team that they once were, and with the trade deadline now on the horizon, General Manager George McPhee is likely to be very active as he prepares his team for the long months ahead.
With some big free agent signings this past offseason, fans and journalists were lauding the Caps, naming them as runaway Stanley Cup favorites. But with the team not nearly playing up to expectations (despite sprinting out to a 7-0-0 start), the Capitals fired Bruce Boudreau and brought in team legend Dale Hunter to take over behind the bench. They are 17-15-4 since the change, and are still struggling to keep up in the playoff race.
With the Florida Panthers pacing the Southeast Division and the Winnipeg Airplanes hot on their tail, this year’s trade deadline is shaping up to become the most important one in recent memory for the Caps. - Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Kings defenseman Slava Voynov’s solid play in 33 games may have led to Jack Johnson’s name in trade rumors. Jonathan Bernier and one of the 2 defenseman could land them a scorer like Jeff Carter. If they were split up, they may be able to get 2 scorers. Friedman doesn’t think the Blue Jackets will trade Rick Nash at the deadline unless the deal is incredible. Friedman notes there are some teams that aren’t big fans of Nash.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: The Penguins have $59.59 million committed to 11 forwards, 6 defenseman and 1 goalie. It could become a problems as some small market owners want to lower the salary cap ceiling to the $60-$62 million range. Pierre LeBrun noted a temporary cap of $68-$69 million will be in place during the summer. Paul Martin is one player the Penguins might have to move at some point to reduce their payroll. He has a cap hit of $5 million through 2014-15.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Coyotes GM Don Maloney has the budget room to make a trade or 2. “Any of the big names and sexier deals won’t include the Coyotes but there a couple of players we think we can fit in that would make us a little stronger,” he said. 3 groups remain interested in buying the Coyotes.
- Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: The Canadiens are 6 points out in the East, and are limbo between being buyers or sellers. UFAs that could be moved are Chris Campoli, Andrei Kostitsyn, Travis Moen and Mathieu Darche. Defenseman Andrei Markov will travel with the team on their 3 game road trip, who is at least a couple weeks away from returning.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets blueprint going forward will be “Fast and competitive.” Heading into the this season, the Blue Jackets thought they had enough skill to skate 3 scoring lines.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Many are looking to see what Senators GM Bryan Murray will do. The Senators are interested in Tuomo Ruutu, along with the Bruins, Rangers, Flyers, Blackhawks and Predators. Though there are some reports that he’s off the market, one executive said Saturday that he wasn’t. To get Ruutu could be costly, a top prospect (perhaps Mark Stone or Stefan Noesen) and a 1st round pick, which is not going to happen. The Senators have been listening to offers for Filip Kuba. It’s doubtful that it happens, but is possible. Sergei Gonchar could also get dealt.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: McGran lists teams that will be buyers, sellers or will stand pat. - Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove notes by Spector’s Hockey (video not posted): Eric Francis said that some NHL GMs doubt Nash will get traded at the deadline. The Blue Jackets are looking for an impact player, 2 top prospects and a 1st round pick. Elliotte Friedman noted that the Blue Jackets are trying to push Nash on the Flyers, and that they’d prefer to move Jeff Carter to the Kings. Francis said that Patrick Kane is happy in Chicago and they are happy with him. Friedman suggested that the Blackhawks could face some questions if they have a short playoff run. Francis said the Flames haven’t had contract talks with Olli Jokinen, but he’s not going anywhere. Sam Gagner also isn’t going anywhere.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs have been offered a 2nd round pick and a prospect for center Mikhail Grabovski. They could get more, and they still hope to re-sign him. The Leafs may keep Grabovski despite contract status, but will consider a 1st round pick, or the existing offer. James Mirtle via twitter: The only way Mirtle sees the Maple Leafs letting Grabovski go is if his contract demands are way to high. The next 10 days will be interesting.
- Scott Burnside and Craig Custance of ESPN: As of yesterday afternoon, the Ducks were 6 points out a playoff spot after a 14-2-3 run. Don’t count on a Ducks fire sale now. Kings GM Dean Lombardi is under pressure to fix their offensive issues, and could be burning the phone lines with Columbus. The Kings may benefit the most from a Rick Nash deal more than any other team. Jeff Carter may be a better fit salary wise for the Kings.
- Jonathan Willis of Hockey Prospectus on ESPN: Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman could be an option for the Capitals. He’s under contract next season, and has fallen out of favor in Anaheim. Canadiens defenseman Chris Campoli could interest the Panthers. Islanders defenseman Milan Jurcina may be a nice fit in Winnipeg.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets forward Andrew Ladd on what they need at the deadline:
“With the troubles we’ve had scoring, if it’s not going to come from within this room, we probably could use some help, there,” he said. “We’ve got a great goaltender, we’ve got D that can move the puck and play both ways.”
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Talk of the Leafs doing a deal with the Flyers including Luke Schenn may be off now that they acquired Nicklas Grossman. Mirtle thinks the smart move for the Maple Leafs may be to sit still and take their lumps in the playoffs if they make it.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Flyers would like to add 1 more defenseman and looking at all options: Luke Schenn, Jack Johnson and Hal Gill.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: If the Blues were to make a trade for a defenseman, it would be a for a left handed shot. Pavel Kubina doesn’t fit.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Pierre McGuire said the Devils, Rangers and Bruins would have had interest in Ryan Smyth.
- Louis Jean via twitter: The Canadiens like Travis Moen and are considering keeping him.
- John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini won’t jeopardize their young core:
“At no time are we going to be selling anything that is going to hurt our future, what we think is part of our core or something that is going to sustain good play for a long time,” Tambellini told reporters during an Oilers practice at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park. “If it’s something we feel will make us significantly better, long-term and short-term, of course we’ll consider it.
“But nothing for just a short-term gain.”
Ales Hemsky’s desire for a long term deal may signal his end in Edmonton. Tambellini said he isn’t looking to deal Sam Gagner or Nikolai Khabibulin. The Oilers would like to improve along the blueline. Oscar Klefbom and juniors David Musil, Martin Marincin and Martin Gernat are a couple years away.
Morning NHL rumors involving: Kings, Blue Jackets, Capitals, Senators, Red Wings, Maple Leafs, Schneider and Stars

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Rumblings continue with the Kings possibly moving Jack Johnson if they can up their offense with a first-line forward. Jonathan Bernier’s name is out there as well. Any deal for Nash would likely included both Johnson and Bernier. LeBrun thinks the Kings and Blue Jackets talked about Jeff Carter before the Nash thing broke. The Capitals have looked at Blue Jackets Antoine Vermette, among others. The Capitals are waiting to see how Nicklas Backstrom is closer to the deadline before they make a move. Senators GM Bryan Murray is not looking for a short-term fix and won’t part with any of their top prospects to bring in some offensive help. They’d like a top 6 but only if the price is right.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings will look to add 1 or 2 veterans for their Cup run. Teemu Selanne would be ideal but he’s focused on getting the Ducks in. Rick Nash would be expensive. Tuomo Ruutu is out 3 weeks and the Hurricanes want to re-sign him. Ryan Smyth has said he wants to stay in Edmonton and Ales Hemsky isn’t gritty and is injury prone.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: To bring in Rick Nash, it may take Jake Gardiner, a 1st round pick, one of Joe Colborne or Nazem Kadri and maybe one of Clarke MacArthur or Nikolai Kulemin. If it isn’t Nash, the Leafs could use a forward. Koshan lists some players who the Maple Leafs might be interested in: James van Riemsdyk. Jeff Carter, Evgeni Nabokov, Nikolai Khabibulin, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan, Ryan Malone, Dustin Penner, Brenden Morrow, Mike Knuble, and Alex Ovechkin.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks Cory Schneider tries to take all trade rumors in stride:
“It’s hard to avoid it, it’s always on somewhere,” said Schneider. “We tend to ignore most of the speculation but it’s interesting to see who is going to strengthen themselves — a contender or a team we’re directly competing against with a guy like Rick Nash. That obviously has implications on us. We don’t follow it obsessively or believe every rumour we hear, but guys keep an eye out and see if we’re going to be active.
“For me, I just don’t think about it. I’ve got a job to do here and if I don’t do it, that probably eliminates possibilities of anything ever happening anyways. I enjoy it here. I’m not looking to get moved and I’m not asking for a trade by any means. If it’s a hockey decision, then it’s out of my control.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (mailbag) Heika thinks the Stars have to shop Mike Ribeiro and Steve Ott to see what interest there is. They can’t just give them away, but if you can get a good return for them, it might be something to do. If they could get a good offer for goalie prospect Jack Campbell, they could move him.
Afternoon trade rumors involving Kubina, Zidlicky, Carter, Kane, Miller, Knuble and the Kings

- Damian Cristodero via twitter: Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina has been asked to provide a list of teams he’d accept a trade too. Kubina has a limited no trade clause. GM Steve Yzerman wouldn’t say if a trade is imminent, but in the interim he won’t play. Yzerman said the trade deadline is a time to replenish their organizational depth. Prospects and draft picks will be a priority. Getting a goalie will likely happen in the summer.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Sources are saying that Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky will be scratched from tonight’s game against the Jets. A trade hasn’t been made, but they want to make sure an injury doesn’t occur.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: The Kings are after a scoring winger, and are believed to be interested in Rick Nash. It doesn’t sound like winger Simon Gagne is close to returning. Rick Nash would be a perfect fit. They may have to part with Jack Johnson, Jonathan Bernier and a couple prospects. If they can’t land Nash, Jeff Carter could be another option, reuniting him with Mike Ricahrds.
“Don’t count L.A. out of that mix,” said an NHL source. “They’re looking for a top-six forward big time.”
Ales Hemsky could be another option, but tensions have been little high between the Oilers and Kings from the Ryan Smyth fiasco this past summer. A NHL scout breaks down LA’s trade deadline strategy:
“They’re pretty solid in goal, their defense is steady. They have guys back there with Johnson and Drew Doughty who can provide offense. I can see them wanting to add a [Jeff] Carter-type guy. I think they could use a fourth-line guy too.
“But I think they should go out and get that top two line player. If they’re going to move Jack Johnson, it’s no secret, he’s not the most defensive-minded guy. He brings that offensive upside and he’s still young. If you’re giving him up because you want to get better, you’d better make sure [of a big return]. He has a bomb for a shot, and in the playoffs special teams can win or lose you a game.”
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: 3 teams are interested in Blue Jackets center Jeff Carter.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Jeremy Roenick recently suggested he’d trade Patrick Kane for a top goaltender. Strickland says the idea of moving Kane as come up, and some realize they need to give up something big to get something big. Offensively they could survive with Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, and Dave Bolland. Sources are saying that Miller is unhappy with Buffalo and would waive his no trade clause for Chicago. There had been speculation that he’d only accept a trade to LA or Anaheim to be closer to his wife (actress Noureen DeWulf), but that is inaccurate. Kane is 23 and is owed $6.5 million through 2015. Miller is 31 and is owed $6.25 million through 2014. Ryan Miller hasn’t been approached by anyone in the organization regarding a trade.
