Smyth to Oilers deal hits snag … Regehr agrees to waive NMC … Flyers eyeing Stamkos? Carter blindsided by trade

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The the trade involving Ryan Smyth to Edmonton for Gilbert Brule and a 5th round pick hit a ‘legal’ snag last night. A Source said Kings GM Dean Lombardi was working trading Brule to another club once the deal goes through. Matheson via twitter: Brule’s health status could be the cause of the trade delay. Helene Elliott via twitter: Kings likely to trade Brule if the trade goes through.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Robyn Regehr has had a change of heart, he’ll waive his no movement clause and accept a trade to the Buffalo Sabres. “Options changed and yes I did waive. I’m going to Buffalo,” Regehr said in a text to the Calgary Sun. “I have to talk to a bunch of family.” When/if the deal gets done, Paul Byron, Chris Butler and a 2nd round pick could be heading to Calgary for Regehr and Ales Kotalik. Sabres owner Terry Pegula was very influential in convincing Robyn Regehr to waive his no movement.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has been looking to get Stamkos signed to a deal in the $7 million range. The Flyers have about $10.2 million salary cap space for next season. Stamkos can’t get an offer sheet until July 1st, and would require sending 4 1st round picks if the Lightning didn’t match. Tampa may have trouble matching a outrageous offer due to the big contracts of Vinny Lecavalier (owed $50 million over next 5 years) and Ryan Malone. Reports are saying that the Leafs could throw an offer sheet in the neighborhood of $9 million.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Yzerman will spend part of next week negotiating with goalie Dwayne Roloson and Mike Smith. Yzerman and Sean Bergenheim’s agent spoke yesterday and there’s still a difference on his worth.

    “(I) understand their position and where they’re coming from. I don’t know if there’s anything I can say,” Yzerman said. “We’re in different — there’s not much I can say. We’re not real optimistic at this time.”

    Yzerman continue to with Steven Stamkos’ side, and hopes to get him locked up long-term.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Leafs VP of hockey operations Dave Nonis,

    “We don’t know what July 1 is going to look like yet.”

    “We might make some deals between now and then that determine how aggressive we are on that front.

    “Are we going to be active? I believe we will regardless of what happens over the next 48 hours here. We are hoping and wanting to sign some players if the price tag makes some sense for us long term.”

    “July 1 is a great time to augment your lineup, it’s not a good time to build your team,” Nonis said. “There’s going to be a premium for most of those players.”

    “The hunt is ongoing,” Nonis said. “There are a lot of teams looking for the same type of player, which makes it difficult. Not a lot of centres are being moved but we’re still in a good position with assets we can give up.”

  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Jeff Carter was blindsided by the trade to Columbus. Carter’s agent Rick Curran said that he met with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and was assured that there was no truth to the rumors that Carter could be traded. Carter signed an 11-year. $58 million deal with the Flyers in November.

    “(Carter) is disappointed,” Curran said, “but that’s no reflection on Columbus. It’s more that he made a commitment to Philly.”

  • HockeyProspect via twitter: Was told that the Flyers would have taken Duncan Siemens with the 8th overall pick until Sean Couturier dropped to them.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline was told that the Blue Jackets had no discussions with the Blackhawks about defenseman Brian Campbell.

  • Josh Yole of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Mario Lemieux came away encourage from his talk with Jaromir Jagr. The Pens haven’t made an offer to Jagr, and are unsure if he’d take less money then he may get elsewhere. Detroit could offer more money. Jagr can’t sign anywhere until July 1st as it’s a “blackout period” now as stipulated in the CBA. Sources are saying Pens GM Ray Shero may not want to pay more than $1 million for Jagr.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The LA Kings left wing wish list could line up like: Eric Cole, Simon Gagne, Ryan Malone, Alex Tanguay, and Cory Stillman.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames are interested in trading for Ryan Smyth, though their level of interest isn’t known. If they don’t think they can get Alex Tanguay signed, they would have a hole on the left wing and would have a “net presence on the powerplay.” Maybe the Kings would take Ales Kotalik and his $3 million, could bury him in the minors.
  • Nick Cotsonika via twitter: Ryan Smyth asked to be moved close to home. Kings GM Lombardi is down to 2 teams, started with 3. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Kings had more trade talks with the Flames and Oilers yesterday about Smyth, he’s going to end up in Alberta.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: A high draft pick will likely be packaged with Ryan Smyth in any trade to accommodate taking on his contract.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It doesn’t look like the Ottawa Senators will be able to move up from the #6 spot in tonight’s draft.

    “We’ve been asked if we’d be willing to move a player with a pick rather than two picks,” Murray told The Team 1200. “It depends on the player. I think one team did ask about a little Swedish defenceman (Erik Karlsson) and the sixth overall and it was politely declined. There are lots of ideas out there that we don’t agree with and there will be lots of offers. You just have to pick the right one.

    “I can see us moving two picks for sure, if not three, but I believe the price for moving up for one pick is usually two picks, not three picks. That’s what it has been in the past. I could see us moving a couple of picks. We could be talking about (keeping) eight or nine picks, but we could be talking 11. I would guess that we would probably trade two picks.”

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Brian Burke,

    “I’ve got lots of lines in the water,” the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager said. “But I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

    The Maple Leafs are trying to land a #1 center or move up in the draft. They have the #25, #30, and #39 picks but they are not enough to get close to the top 5 picks. He may not be that interested in moving the #25 pick to get “to the teens” as picks from #10 to around #26 are not much different in quality. Burke couldn’t answer questions regarding whether he was in on Mike Richards and/or Jeff Carter as it would violate NHL tampering rules. Darren Dreger reported that the Flyers called about Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin but never got to Burke (see one of yesterday’s posts for a little more info on it).

  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke wants to see if winger Clarke MacArthur is a one year wonder before giving him a long-term deal, “The problem is I’m not prepared to commit to a long-term contract for a player who really had one productive year.”It would seem that negotiations for the RFA have come to a halt.

    “Putting a value on that is not easy either. That’s why we haven’t been able to sign him. It’s not that he’s being unreasonable, it’s just ‘What is he?’

    “Is he a 70-point player or is he a 35-point player where he has been most of his career, so I’m not surprised we’re having a difficult time arriving at a value.”

    Burke on RFA Luke Schenn,

    “There doesn’t appear to be any urgency on that one from their side,” Burke said of negotiations with Schenn’s camp. “They’ll probably wait and see if other teams sign contracts that they think might help them.”

  • CP in the Globe and Mail: The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed Andrei Markov to a 3 year, $17.25 million deal, a $5.75 million cap hit.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract breakdown: “$10M, $6.5M, $8M, $6M, $6M,, $5.5M, $5.5M $2.25M, $1.25M.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Robyn Regehr was going to sleep on the proposed trade that would send him to Buffalo. He’s already spoken with Darcy Regier and Terry Pegula.
  • Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Max Talbot rejected a 3 year offer from the Penguins last week. It’s believed to be a “slight” decrease in pay from his previous $1.05 million salary, possibly in the $800,000 range. If Talbot is going to take a reduction in pay, he may be wanting a 4 year deal.

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: “Bryzgalov gets $48M in first 7 years of deal. $2.25M in Year in 8, $1.25M in Year 9. Let’s call it a 7 year, $48M deal. It’s 9 yrs/$51.5M.”
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: “Flyers asked for Kadri and Kulemin from the Leafs for Mike Richards. Toronto said they would consider it, but never heard back from Phi.” and “Leafs were also interested in Carter and Kadri was discussed, but Tor wouldn’t include Kulemin to close deal for Carter.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Maple Leafs were in on Richards but feeling is that the Flyers may have wanted to move him to the Western Conference. DownGoesBrown via twitter: “If deals on the table were really Schenn/Simmonds from LA or Kadri/Kulemin from TOR, I can understand why the Flyers didn’t call Burke back.”
  • Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed is told the Flyers may not be done dealing, may be looking to get into top 3 in the draft. Leed thinks Bobrovsky rumors will now start, possibly in the package to move up in draft.
  • Rob Longley via twitter: Burke said he’s not willing to do a big long-term deal for Clarke MacArthur “for one good year.”
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Robyn Regehr was informed yesterday about the possible trade with Buffalo. Hasn’t been given a deadline on when they need an answer by. “Robyn Regehr unlikely to decide tonight on whether to waive no move clause to clear trade to Buffalo”
  • Mark Spector via twitter: Spector’s been told that Smyth to Edmonton will happen, Kings can’t take back significant salary. Deal doesn’t have to happen at the draft, but does have to happen by July 1st.

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Sources say Robyn Regehr has been asked to waive his no-move clause and accept a trade to the Buffalo Sabres.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun has been told that the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames have talked about Ryan Smyth. Talks are very preliminary, but intriguing.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk was told by Pat Morris (Richards agent) that they are going to July 1st and won’t waive the no-movement clause.
  • Helene Elliott via twitter: Elliottt doesn’t see the LA Kings and Drew Doughty getting a deal done anytime soon. She does expect a Ryan Smyth trade this weekend. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein isn’t hearing any difficulties regarding Kings and Doughty discussions.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Agent Don Meehen is expected to meet with the Kings about Doughty and Lightning about Steven Stamkos tomorrow.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Andrei Markov’s Russian agent didn’t deny that Markov re-signed with the Canadiens. He told SovSport, “I’m very happy for Andrei.” Agent added “Markov had a few very attractive offers from the KHL. He didn’t even consider them; wanted to stay in MTL.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: According to Don Meehan on the reports that Andrei Markov re-signed with the Canadiens “We’re not done, we’re still working on it.” Meehan is expected to meet with Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier later today or tomorrow.
  • Paul Hunter via twitter: Maple Leafs GM Burke said he’d trade his 3 top picks (25th, 30th and 39th) for an established player that could help now.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: Blues and Matt D’Agostini talks are to pick up at the draft, could be looking for 1 year deal in the $1.5-$1.9 million range.
  • Kate Carrera via twitter: The Capitals have made a qualifying offer to defenseman Karl Alzner, and JP Barry expects to discuss a new deal later this week.

Recchi to retire if Bruins win the Cup … Red Wings off-season options … Could Rangers look at Weiss

  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Pronvince: If the Bruins win the Stanley Cup, Mark Recchi will retire.

    “Yes, I will,” Recchi said Sunday from Boston as his Bruins prepare for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks. “If we win, there’s definitely no doubt I’m going to walk away. I want to stay in the game and work with a general manager and learn the development side of the game. I think I understand some parts as a player.”

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Rumors are that the Red Wings will use the $6 million from the retired Brian Rafalski to go after Predators Dman Shea Weber, though Dupont thinks the Predators would match. The salary cap could be going up around 6-7%, from $59.4 million to around $63.5 million.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Canucks should sign Kevin Bieksa over Christian Ehrhoff. Matheson proposes a trade and wonders if the Flames would do it, Devin Setoguchi and Jason Demers for Robyn Regehr.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the wings need to get younger to push Todd Bertuzzi and Tomas Holmstrom. Jiri Hudler may be trade bait. The best free agent options for them could be Brooks Laich and Ville Leino, with Alex Tanguay as a possibility. WHL MVP and recently signed goalie Darcy Kuemper will likely start next season in the AHL. The Wild could go with German goalie Dennis Endras as Niklas Backstom’s backup, letting Jose Theodore and Josh Harding go as UFA’s. Matheson thinks the Wild should trade Backstrom and keep Theodore, but his $6 million price tag makes it extremely difficult.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks wonders if the NY Rangers are unable to bring in Brad Richards, they might look to Florida and Stephen Weiss.

Blackhawks sign Crawford … Werek and Etem sign entry level deals … Button has trade ideas for Capitals … Panthers want to bring Vokoun back

  • Elliott Pap of hte Vancouver Sun: Canucks winger Mikael Samuelsson will be out for the remainder of the season after adductor tendon and sports hernia surgery.
  • Chicago Breaking Sports: The Blackhawks have signed Corey Crawford to a 3 year deal worth $8 million, a $2.6 million cap hit. “It means a lot,” Crawford said. “I want to be a part of the Blackhawks and I think the management and everyone there wanted me back too. It’s great to get it done early. Now I can just focus on workouts and getting prepared for next season.”
  • Arizona Republic: The Coyotes have signed recently acquired prospect Ethan Werek to an entry level deal. Werek scored 24 goals and added 28 assists in 47 games with Kington of the OHL. He was acquired earlier this month from the Rangers for Oscar Linberg.
  • Eric Stephens of hte OC Register: The Ducks have signed 2010 1st round (29th overall) draft pick Emerson Etem to an entry level deal. His NHL deal is for $900,000 with $90,000 in bonuses, $67,500 AHL salary. Etem scored 45 goals with 35 assists in 65 games with Medicine Hat of the WHL.
  • Craig Button of ESPN: Button offers some trade options for the Capitals this off-season. They have 3 capable goalies in Michal Neuvirth, Semyon Varlamov and Braden Holtby. The Flyers could be one option, and have rugged winger Scott Hartnell. Could expand the deal to include Jeff Schultz and Braydon Coburn. Button thinks the Caps should target Valtteri Filppula and could offer up Mike Green. Jonathan Ericsson could also be a target of Washington. Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr would also look good in a Caps uniform. If the Caps offered up prospect Cody Eakin, it might open up discussions for Rene Bourque or David Moss. Button offers up a blockbuster proposal: one of Washington’s three goalies, Mike Green, and Alexander Semin to Anaheim for Francois Beauchemin and Bobby Ryan.
  • The Fourth Period: The Panthers are very interested in bringing goalie Tomas Vokoun back next season. The 35 year old had a cap hit of $5.7 million last year.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: With Corey Crawford locked up, the Blackhawks will now focus on Michael Frolik and Chris Campoli. They will also have decide what they are going to do with RFAs Viktor Stalberg, Troy Brouwer and Jake Dowell.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: The Minnesota Wild have received permission for the Blue Jakets to speak with Ken Hitchcock. GM Chuck Fletcher has apparently interviewed Michel Therrien and Craig MacTavish already. Sources say Fletcher has talked to Kirk Muller, but he has not been ‘interviewed.’

Sens fire 3 coaches, list of possible replacements … Flames could do a rebuild … Seguin could be a scratch for playoffs … Leafs to sign 7th round pick

  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators have fired coaches Cory Clouston and assistants Greg Carvel and Brad Lauer. GM Murray said he’s been evaluating the staff for months.

    “Based on the performance over the course of the year, we felt a change was necessary,” he said.

    “It’s always difficult. Coaches get the finger pointed at them maybe more than they should.

    “But we felt in this case – all of us, coaching staff and management – that at training camp we had a competitive hockey team and for whatever reason we didn’t play to the level we thought and expected, and as a result changes had to be made.”

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch mentions potential coaches for the Senators. Lindy Ruff, John Tortorella, Dave Cameron, Kurt Kleindorst, Alain Vigneault, Kevin Dineen, Randy Cunneyworth, and Bob Hartley.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Sportak wonders if the Flames should trade their stars, Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff, and rebuild. They don’t have many top-6 forwards/top-4 D on entry level contracts, building blocks for the future. Iginla will be 34 this summer, Kiprusoff will be 35 in October. If going for a complete rebuild, Robyn Regehr could be traded.
  • Eric Francis in the Ottawa Sun: Francis doesn’t think the Flames should consider trading Jarome Iginla, “anyone who thinks an organization should do anything in a player’s best interest obviously doesn’t have the slightest clue how to run a business, let alone a hockey team.”
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks backup Cory Schneider posted a 16-4-2 record this season. He’ll make $900,000 and he could be on the move this summer. Columubus has shown some interest. “I’ve proved that I can play in this league and that I belong,” he said. “It’s not an adventure every single night. I can be consistent and win games and know what’s going to happen if I have to handle a bigger work load.”
  • Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes missed the playoffs again, and DeCock thinks coach Paul Maurice could be fired, it might be time for a change. They’ve missed the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season.
  • Barbara Matson of the Boston Globe: Bruins forward Tyler Seguin played in 72 games this season, but has found himself a healthy scratch of late, and that could continue in to the playoffs.

    “That’s a lot of speculation that he’s fighting for [a position], whether he’s in, he’s out,’’ Julien said. “Understandably. I’m just saying, for me, those are tough questions to answer because you guys are all looking for what is my possible scenario. I’m going back to the same thing — we don’t know what’s going to happen until Monday. We’ll find out Monday where he stands and where the rest of the team stands. Lots of things can happen from here until then.’’

  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: The Blue Jackets need to make the playoffs next year, and could trade their 1st round pick this year for immediate help. GM Scott Howson, “Yeah, we would look at trading the pick if it was something that could make an immediate impact on the team,”
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda will be a UFA and he hopes to sign a 3-4 year deal with Columbus. He’s unsure if the Blue Jackets want him back as there haven’t been any talks. Defenseman Craig Rivet could retire.

Habs looking for top 6 and a Dman … Senators that are/might be available … White may be dealt soon … Flyers shopping Zherdev

  • David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are still looking for a top 6 forward, and adding Paul Mara doesn’t prevent them from adding another defenseman. Mara was a depth move with a cap hit of $210,000 for them. Still looking to add another Dman.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray,

    “I’m not trying to trade everybody,” said Murray following the Kelly deal.

    “I’m trying to trade some other people or move some other people, but it’s certainly not a housecleaning by any means.”

    Top candidates to be moved by the Senators: Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Neil (Pens and Habs interested), and Chris Campoli. Possible Senators on the move: Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba and Matt Carkner. They’ll try to move Sergei Gonchar and Alex Kovalev.

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes are considering a trade offer for Ian White, and he could be moved in the next day or two, or not at all.

    “Teams out there are looking for different things, and we have something to consider,” Rutherford said in an interview Wednesday. “This could go one way or the other.

    “We have an offer, so we decided to pull [White] back for a day or two. But he could be back in the lineup this week.”

    It’s not known which team made the offer, if it was a player-for-player deal or draft picks or prospects.

  • Anthony Sanfilippo of DelcoTimes: Ville Leino missed last night’s game but should be able to go Friday according to Paul Holmgren. The Flyers opted to use Jody Shelly instead of Nik Zherdev in Leino’s place. The Flyers are trying to trade Zherdev, and if they can’t find any takers he might get waived.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: When talking about Ales Hemsky trade rumors he asked, “What am I worth?” Matheson thinks that when looking at the deal the Senators and Leafs got for Mike Fisher and Kris Versteeg, it would be more than that. A 1st round pick and another draft pick or good NHLer?
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Atlanta Thrashers have begun contract talks with Andrew Ladd, and should have a deal done by the trade deadline. Strickland doesn’t see the Avalanche doing much. The Blue Jackets will look to move a Dman for a forward. Penguins are looking for a forward, with minor rumblings that they’d move Alex Goligoski. Don’t expect anything from the Blackhawks. If the Sabres fallout of playoff contention they might move Jordan Leopold. A couple teams are looking at Blues forward Brad Winchester, including the Canucks. The Blues have made Ty Conklin available and will consider Eric Brewer who would consider waiving his no-trade clause for the right team.
  • Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Brunside doesn’t see the Flyers doing much more given their cap situation. The Lightning are looking for defensive help, and won’t give up a 1st or 2nd round picks in a trade. LeBrun doesn’t think the Hurricanes will move Joni Pitkanen unless the fall out of contention before the deadline. John-Michael Liles may be a fallback for the “failed Kaberle suitors.” Alex Kovalev could be a nice fit in Pittsburgh, maybe for a 4th or 5th round pick.

  • Bob McKenzie of TSN: Canucks forwards Mason Raymond and/or Mikael Samuelsson could become trade bait to upgrade their top 6. They may also be looking for a 4th line center. The Calgary Flames could look to move Steve Staios or Anton Babchuk. They could look for draft picks for Alex Tanguay, Brendan Morrison and Curtis Glencross, and might look at moving Robyn Regehr if they fall out of the playoff race. If the Oilers are going to move Andrew Cogliano or Ladislav Smid, they’d want young players in return. They may also try to move Dustin Penner and/or Ales Hemsky. There is an outside chance Sheldon Souray will be put on re-entry waivers, but it’s more likely he’ll be moved in the off-season.
  • Joe MacDonald of ESPN Boston: The Bruins are having internal discussions whether or not to shut down Marc Savard for the season. Before a decision is made, he’ll be re-evaluated today. “With the time between concussions, and with the severity of the concussion [last March], and the time between when he basically stopped having concussion symptoms, [shutting him down] is certainly something you would have to consider,” Chiarelli said. If they shut him down, they can put him LTIR and use his cap to bring in an impact player.
  • Seth Lakso of NESN: The Bruins might have an interest in Senators defenseman Chris Phillips. They currently have about $1.7 million in cap space, and could increase if Savard is put on LTIR. The Bruins may have to include a roster player to bring in Phillips contract.
  • Fluto Fhinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins are looking to some more offensive consistency from their centers, and may look to replace Savard’s  offense closer to the deadline. Chiarelli has said that with so many teams within playoff reach, the current market is sparse. They have depth down the middle, so they may look at the wing and on the blueline. The Bruins are unlikely to part with the 1st round pick they got from the Maple Leafs, but have their own that they might be willing to deal.
  • Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Penguins GM Ray Shero,
    “I can only speak for myself and I’ve talked to a few (GMs),” Shero said. “I haven’t talked to all the teams, but I have kept in touch with a few guys. With our team I have a pretty good idea of what we want to do so I’m not contacting every team. You do that a week or two before the deadline to make sure you’re covering everything off, doing your due diligence, but it hasn’t been that active now. As you get through the All-Star break it tends to pick up and we’ll see that over the next few weeks of course.”

  • EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek says the Kings need a top 6 forward, but to have patience as they are building for the long run and some key pieces are in place.
  • Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune: The net is getting crowded in Tampa with Mike Smith finishing his AHL conditioning stint. The Lightning now have 3 goaltenders on their roster. “I’m just going to let the situation evolve a little bit and see how it goes,” said GM Steve Yzerman. Yzerman added “But ultimately we have to do what makes sense for the team, and in any trade you shop around and you try to make the best deal that you can if that’s what you’re looking to do.” Ryan Malone practiced but still wasn’t ready to return from his ‘mid-body injury,’ but could be ready for their next game.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter:  The Penguins say Jordan Staal will automatically be suspended, but the NHL will review it. Staal will be suspended ‘x’ amount of games, have suspension rescinded, or fined for the incident.

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Brian Burke said “I have never spoken to Doug Wilson on that. Total fabrication.” Burke was responding to internet rumors of a possible deal with the Sharks involving Joe Thornton.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Jason Arnott has already stated he’d waive his no-trade clause, and is unsure where he’ll finish the season. “I think I have to just go out and play,” he said. “The trade deadline is coming up. I’m sure it will come quicker than normal. I just have to wait and see.”
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: Coach Dan Bylsma said that Evgeni Malkin won’t play tonight but he’s traveling with the team.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Edler underwent micro discectomy surgery on Monday, hopes to be back by the end of the regular season, though GM Mike Gillis said that is unlikely, as it could be 3 months to recover. Sami Salo still doesn’t know when he’ll be able to return, he’s been practicing for 5 weeks. Andrew Alberts could be back on Friday, Aaron Rome could be ready next week.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche winger David Jones will be out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that he suffered in the final game before the all-star break. Peter Forsberg’s next practice is scheduled for Wednesday.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens have about $3.5 million in cap space after the season ending injuries to Markov and Gorges. Do they go after a top 6 forward like a Richards, Arnott or Weiss? Or after a defenseman like Robyn Regehr?

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Canadian teams, the Maple Leafs, Senators, Oilers and Flames are all trying to make some trades, with Sens Bryan Murray and Leafs Brian Burke the most aggressive. For the Leafs; Kris Versteeg, J.S. Giguere, Tomas Kaberle and Mike Komisarek  (Francois Beauchemin not mention in the article is also rumored). The Sens could look to move Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, Mike Fisher, Sergei Gonchar. The Flames could ask Robyn Regehr to waive his no trade. Jarome Iginla isn’t going anywhere. The Oilers will see if someone comes calling about Sheldon Souray. “I don’t expect it to heat up dramatically just yet,” said Burke. “A month is a long time, especially in this business. If you want to put a deal together — even a big deal — you can put it together in 72 hours. I don’t think anyone is feeling any heat yet.” Zach Parise hopes to return in the next month, and if the Devils put the future RFA on the trade block, there will several teams interested.
  • Damien Cox via twitter: TMZ reporting that Mike Komisarek told the cops that he didn’t hit the woman in the LA bar, witnesses back up his story.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: There is no closing date, but Dave Checkets is close to finishing a deal with investors in a financial restructure of the St. Louis Blues. There had been a search for a replacement for TowerBrook’s 75% interest.

Crosby cleared for light workouts … Healing Rangers … Roundup of names mentioned in trade rumors

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:

    “There hasn’t been much real talk,” Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon told ESPN.com this week. “Teams are saying ‘We’ll talk later, we’ll talk later.’ But that’s fine.”

    “There’s been lots of talk going on, but it’s hard to jar anything loose right now,” Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said this week.

    “Most of us have players that we would make available even right now for a trade, either because they’re underperforming and/or overpaid,” Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier told us this week. “But it’s impossible right now to get an agreement on values. We’re all hoping that we’re going to be able to just charge a cost without taking anything back, and that’s not reality. So I think, yes, we’re all sitting around to the last day or two again [before the trade deadline].”

    The Maple Leafs and Senators have been trying to make trades (not with each other) for some time but haven’t had any luck. It doesn’t look like the Senators will move Erik Karlsson, Daniel Alfredsson, and Jason Spezza. The Leafs may be ready to take draft picks and prospects as ‘traditional hockey deals’ are harder to do nowadays. There’s the Tomas Kaberle and his no-trade clause question that will be brought up again. Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg will continue get interest. Sheldon Souray is still available. Dustin Penner should draw some interest. Future UFA’s the Sabres have are Tim Connolly, Mike Grier, Rob Niedermayer, Craig Rivet and Steve Montador.

  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby has been cleared by doctors to begin light workouts. He’s been out since Jan. 5th with a mild concussion. Crosby will have to be symptom free from the workout before he’ll be able to practice with the team.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying that the Ottawa Senators are trying to move Sergei Gonchar. Gonchar has 2 year and $11 million left on his deal. The Sharks, Bruins, and Blue Jackets are teams that have shown interest in adding a defenseman. “You could deal him, but you’re going to have to take somebody back,” said one NHL insider. “It’s going to have to be a dollar-for-dollar, which means they’ll have to take someone’s big contract back. “This is going to be a really tough deal for (the Senators) to make.” Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu have been the most talked about names.
  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: A list of players who’s names have come up the most in trade rumors: Mike Fisher (OTT), Tim Connolly (BUF), Daniel Alfredsson (OTT), Sergei Gonchar (OTT), Chris Phillips (OTT), Robyn Regehr (CAL), Bryan McCabe (FLA), Stephen Weiss (FLA), Tomas Vokoun (FLA), Cory Stillman (FLA), Drew Stafford (BUF), Tomas Kaberle (TOR), Francois Beauchemin (TOR), JS Giguere (TOR), Jason Arnott (NJ), Brad Richards (DAL), and Devin Setoguchi (SJ).
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers should get Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi back on Tuesday. Vinnie Prospal is close to returning, and before the trade deadline they’ll also get Erik Christensen, Brandon Dubinsky and Ruslan Fedotenko back.   • Lisa Wallace of the Globe and Mail: Ray Emery is hoping to get a contract in the next couple of weeks, as he continues he comeback attempt. Last April he had bone grafted from his leg and inserted “into the ball of the hip.” He was on the ice in Ottawa with goaltending coach Eli Wilson. “I’m ready to go and start training in the American Hockey League and know that my body can take that kind of exertion,” Emery said. “The hockey’s not all the way there. I feel like a player at the end of the summer who needs some training and some games to get a feeling for the game again.”
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks are looking to add another defenseman and a center. Players they might be offering as trade bait are Victor Stalberg, Jack Skille, and Nick Boynton. Defenseman that Sassone thinks they could look at are Bryan McCabe, Roman Hamrlik, Joni Pitkanen, and Chris Phillips.
