Savard to LTIR … Brodeur to have MRI … Kessel Audio … Red Wings looking at Conklin … Blackhawks-Thrashers scouting each other

  • Boston Bruins: Announced that Marc Savard will be put on LTIR and is out for the rest of the season.
  • The Fourth Period: The Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Thrashers have been heavily scouting each other this year, and might be setting something up for a future deal. The ‘Hawks could be looking for a Dman, and Brent Sopel could be an option. The Thrashers may like Jack Skille.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Red Wings aren’t looking at expensive goalies, such as JS Giguere. Chris Phillips will be easier to move than Sergei Gonchar as the later has 2 years remaining. The Calgary Flames aren’t trading Robyn Regehr or Jarome Iginla. Allen thinks Alex Kovalev could end up in Pittsburgh. The Predators are looking for scoring help.
  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: The LA Kings are looking for some scoring help, and Gleason thinks that Tim Connolly could be a fit. He mentions Kyle Clifford as a ‘prospect’ that could head to other way to Buffalo. Mark Stuart and Blake Wheeler could be trade bait for the Bruins.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The St. Louis Blues have already decided they won’t be re-signing goalie Ty Conklin, and have had discussions with the Detroit Red Wings. Ben Bishop would become the backup if Conklin is moved.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ray Emery signed with the Anaheim Ducks and was put on waivers at noon. Any team can claim but he’d have to stay in the NHL. If the claiming team wants to send him to the minors, he’d have to go on waivers again, and the Ducks could claim him.
  • Mark Spector via twitter: The Rangers have been scouting Sheldon Souray and haven’t liked what they’ve seen. He’s too slow for AHL, let alone the NHL.
  • Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post: Phil Kessel responds to comments he made yesterday, “Obviously, I love Toronto, I want to be here,” Kessel said, smiling. “I love this city. I love the fans. I love this team. The guys are great here. I don’t want any trade or anything like that. I want to be here for a very long time.”
  • Kevin Allen via twitter: Pavel Datsyuk will be back in the Red Wings lineup tonight. Tomas Holmstrom is hoping to return on Wednesday.
  • Eric Stephens via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf is back practicing with the Ducks and working with the 1st PP unit. Could be getting for their game against the Canucks.
  • Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Dwayne Roloson will start for the Lightning tonight against the Sabres. Ryan Malone will return to the lineup. Nate Thompson will not play tonight, may have suffered a concussion last yesterday. Malone practicing on top power play unit.

Moulson re-signs … Flyers waive Walker, might have Cole in their sights … Edler to have back surgery … Getzlaf targeting Feb. 9th

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Philadelphia Flyers have put Matt Walker on waivers. The Calgary Flames have put Ales Kotalik on waivers.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Matt Walker will likely not get claimed on waivers  as he carries a $1.7 million salary. The move clears more cap room for future acquisitions, and a little extra room to sign Ville Leino to an extension.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: With Walker being waived, it gives the Flyers $3.6 million in acquisition space. Eric Cole ($2.9 million cap hit) is familiar to coach Peter Laviolette and could be a player the Flyers target.
  • Craig Custance via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf has been cleared to skate on Monday and is targeting February 9th versus the Canucks as his return date.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador, out with a concussion, may not play a game this season, but is hoping to return next season.
  • Thomas Reed via twitter: Mike Commodore will make his AHL debut tonight, and is partnered with prospect John Moore.

Lombardi fined $50K … Another Forsberg attempt with Avs … Caps and Devils won’t claim Nabokov

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi fined $50,000. His comment last night was …

“When the guy in Toronto making the decisions on the goals, in Ottawa and the one tonight, wanted the G.M.’s job in L.A. and was not happy about not getting it, you have to assume you are going to get those type of calls,” Lombardi said. “However, we have put ourselves in a position where these calls have a monumental effect on our season, and we’re going to have to find a way out of it ourselves.”

Lombardi called Mike Murphy this morning and apologized, Murphy accepted. Lombardi told TSN today “In the end things swelter and blow, but when I woke up, I said, boy that was stupid.”

3 groups of Flames that could be traded… Getzlaf out 4-6 weeks … Karlsson only safe Senator … Commodore asks for trade … plus more

  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Sportak lists 3 groups of Calgary Flames that could be traded 1. The UFA’s: Curtis Glencross, Brendan Morrison, Anton Babchuk, Steve Staios, Adam Pardy and Alex Tanguay. 2. Not playing up to Snuff: Niklas Hagman or Matt Stajan. 3. Core players: Jarome Iginla, Robyn Regehr and Miikka Kiprusoff.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Chris Pronger has been cleared to resume light skating tomorrow. Pronger is recovering from a broken foot he suffered on Dec. 15th. He’ll be re-evaluated on Jan. 12th.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: According to sources, Mike Commodore has asked the Columbus Blue Jackets for a trade because he doesn’t think he’s in coach Arniel’s game plans. He’s been a healthy scratch 7 of the last 8 games. Commodore signed a 5 year, $18.75 million deal in 2008 ($3.5 million next year, $3.35 million the year after), so it could be difficult to move him. Portzline notes “His inability to crack the top six spots on the Blue Jackets’ blue line — considered one of the worst in the NHL — will also set off alarms.” From coach Scott Arniel, “I don’t have him in our top 6. He feels he should be, which is why he asked for the trade. I understand that.” Arniel also added, “This isn’t personal. This has to do with hockey skills.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It looks like Erik Karlsson may be the only Ottawa Senator that GM Bryan Murray wouldn’t trade, and he isn’t finding any buyers for the rest of his players. If a trade can’t be made, don’t be surprised if Murray goes back behind the bench. Mike Fisher has 2 years left on his contract, might get some interest, but doubtful to move. Chris Phillips is a UFA at seasons end, but would like to stay, no negotiations have taken place. Jarrko Ruutu has been a healthy scratch and is a UFA at the end of the year.
  • Ian Walker via twitter: Roberto Luongo will start for the Canucks. Andrew Alberts will also be in the lineup.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Jed Ortmeyer (Min) and JD Watt (Cgy) cleared waivers today. Whitfield (Bos), Marc-Andre Bergeron (TB) and Kyle Wilson (CBJ) were placed on waivers today.

HNIC Hotstove video … Downie back on Tuesday … Leafs get offer for Versteeg … Zidlicky’s shoulder injury serious

  • Tampa Tribune: The Tampa Bay Lightning could get winger Steve Downie back in the lineup on Tuesday. Downie has been out since Dec. 2nd with a high ankle injury, had been lobbying to get in the lineup last night. Goalie Mike Smith is also close to returning, he’s been out since Dec. 20th with a knee sprain. Randy Jones missed last night’s game (last 2 of 3) with an upper body injury.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Pierre LeBrun mentioned in last night’s Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove (video is at bottom of this post) that the Toronto Maple Leafs received an offer for Kris Versteeg.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Marek Zidlicky’s shoulder injury may be more serious than originally hoped. GM Chuck Fletcher, “I’ll just say right now he’s going to be out for a while. We still have to speak with the doctors and look at the alternatives we have here. But it’s a significant injury.” Surgery could be an option.
  • Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel: The Florida Panthers will continue to look at trading Steve Reinprecht if no one claims him off waivers by Monday. He’s in his 2nd year of a 3 year, $6.52 million deal.
  • Eric Stephens via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf will see a specialist on Tuesday or Wednesday where a timetable for his return could be determined. Getzlaf has a nasal sinus fracture.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers are still carrying 3 goalies, as they don’t want to put Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher on waivers, and Sergei Bobrovsky has been playing really well despite playing only 3 games in the last 9.  “It’s all about timing. When someone has a goalie go down, I’m sure our phone will start ringing,” said a Flyers official. “Three goalies just don’t work, long-term. It’s just not good.”

Staal could go in the Classic…tomorrow night? Beauchemin drawing interest … Trade talks heating up

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Trade talks are heating up with a number of teams calling the Leafs and asking about a number of players. There isn’t an offer yet worth taking.  Francois Beauchemin and his limited no-trade clause are drawing interest. More talk around the league.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie senses there will be some trades in the next couple of days, though may not be big ones, possibly Toronto.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Ryan Getzlaf has been put on IR by the Ducks with multiple nasal fractures. Bobby Ryan will now move up to the first power play with Perry, Selanne, Visnovsky and Fowler.

Happy New Year’s to everyone, and expect tomorrow mornings post to be a little later than usual.

Toews and Getzlaf injured … Rafalski questionable for Tuesday … Oshie late Jan. return? No progress for Perron and McDonald

  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews left last night’s game 13 minutes in with a shoulder injury. More will be known today on the extent of the injury.
  • Eric Stephens OC Register: Ryan Getzlaf took a puck off the forehead and left the ice with 4 minutes left in the 2nd. The extent of the injury is not known yet.
  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Larry Quinn, a minority owner in the Buffalo Sabres is denying reports that a letter of intent was signed to sell the team to Terrence Pegula. Quinn said that the Buffalo News report that a document was signed to buy the Sabres from majority owner Tom Golisano is not correct. There’s no doubt the process has begun, but maybe not to the extent being reported.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward TJ Oshie is recovering faster that expected. He broke is ankle on Nov. 10th, with surgery putting him on the shelf for 3 month, re-evaluation was to take place in February. There is a chance that Oshie could be back in the Blues lineup at the end of January. He’s been skating for about a week and progressing well. Neither David Perron and Andy McDonald are still not symptom free from their concussions. There were reports that McDonald was riding a bike but that may not have been the case.
  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: It looks like Pascal Leclaire will be out another at least another week with his lower body injury. He could be ready for their Jan. 7th game against the Blackhawks.
  • Larry Brooks via twitter: Todd White was placed on waivers again by the NY Rangers, with Mats Zuccarello with the team, it could spell the end of his tenure with the Rangers.

Rangers-Fedotenko talking … Getzlaf new Ducks captain … Bernier beats out Ersberg … Morrison released

  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The New York Rangers and Ruslan Fedotenko continue to talk about a contract. 3 other teams have shown interest if he can’t get a deal worked out the Rangers.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Los Angeles Kings backup battle was won by Jonathan Bernier. Erik Ersberg didn’t get into an exhibition game after injuring his hand. He was unlikely to beat out Bernier anyways as he was in Murray’s doghouse for most of last season. Ersberg is set to make $750,000 this season, and will likely be put on waivers.
  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: Brendan Morrison was released by the Vancouver Canucks, he never received a contract offer. Morrison was asked about the possibility of retirement, adding “No, I’ll see how this year goes and make a decision. I still feel I can play. I know I can play.” Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Morrison had a good camp, with the Calgary Flames the best bet to go after the 35-year old forward due to the amount of injuries they’ve had down the middle. Brian Burke said in an email that the Maple Leafs don’t have any interest in Morrison. The Canucks are down to 28 players after sending Victor Oreskovich, Sergei Shirokov, Yann Sauve and Bill Sweatt to the Manitoba Moose.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Florida Panthers goalie of the future, Jacob Markstrom was sent to the AHL by the team. Michael Grabner, Andrew Peters and Joe Callahan were released by the club, and will be sent to the AHL if they clear waivers. Grabner being put on waivers is a bit surprising since he was part of the deal that sent Keith Ballard to the Canucks.
  • Nick Kypreos: Sources are saying that Kyle Wellwood is heading to the KHL, for a 1 year deal worth over $1 million with bonuses.

Gagne will waive his no-trade clause … Kaberle wouldn’t happen until next week … Ducks-Ryan talks “done for a while”

Anthony Sanfilippo of the Delaware County Daily Times: Simon Gagne has agreed to waive his no trade clause. The Flyers don’t have a deal in place for Gagne though. The Flyers would like to move Gagne to free up some cap space to re-sign Darroll Powe and Dan Carcillo, and take a run at a higher priced goalie. Marty Turco really wants to go to Philly. The LA Kings could be interested in Gagne. Rumors are that it could involve several players, but is most likely to involve a player and draft picks. James van Riemsdyk name has also been mentioned.

Helene Elliott of the LA Times: LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi continues to work on “a number of different scenarios”. Ilya Kovalchuk is of course the big one, but he’s rumored to be getting a 10 year, $100 million offer from the Islanders, which may be too big for the Kings to match. The Isles are $9 million under salary for and are looking to build a new arena. There are also reports that the Kings may be interested in Gagne, though that would depend on if they land Kovalchuk.

Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Any Tomas Kaberle deal not likely to happen until next week due to the long weekend. Burke doesn’t expect much action on free agents this weekend as well. He won’t make a pitch for Kovalchuk ‘unless the bottom right out of the market’. Burke had agents for 2 ex-Leafs calling him.

Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Anaheim Ducks are “done for a while” according to GM Bob Murray in regards to their talks with RFA Bobby Ryan. Ryan said he didn’t expect to make more money than Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, then he turned down a 5-year, $25 million deal.

Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals may look to fill their 2nd-4th line centers with a player from within the organization. The leading candidates so far would be converted winger Tomas Fleischmann, and inexperienced Mathieu Perrault and Marcus Johansson.

Devils Not Talking to Ilya Yet … Flyer Injury Updates and the Goalie Situation … Gonchar Still in Penguins Plans

Mark Everson of the NY Post: There hasn’t been a lot of negotiations between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Devils have a track record of waiting to late on re-signing some of their key UFAs. Kovalchuk turned down $10 million a year from Atlanta, but would Lou go that high? Everson thinks they should be making an offer before he possibly bolts for the Rangers (I don’t see how they’d fit his salary in) or Russia (he better not for my keeper fantasy teams sake). I can see the Blues making a run at him if he opts for free agency.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: Jeff Carter could be back in the Flyers lineup before the end of the regular season. Their 4th backup goalie, Johan Backluns is still day-to-day with a groin injury. Michael Leighton has started skating (out with high ankle sprain) but won’t be ready until the start of the playoffs at the earliest. Ray Emery will be undergoing bone graff surgery on his leg and hip tomorrow, which will hopefully save his career.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: The Flyers goaltending situation is in flux this season, and the off-season will bring plenty of different decisions for the team. Ray Emery’s career could be over. Michael Leighton is a UFA. Brian Boucher has 1 year left on his contract. Johan Backlund is 28, unproven, and a UFA at seasons end. The Flyers will most likely talk to the Canadiens about Carey Price, but what would the cost be?  Other Flyer free agents are Dan Carcillo, Arron Asham, Darroll Powe, Braydon Coburn, Ryan Parent and Lucas Krajicek.
Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins signing of Kris Letang yesterday shouldn’t affect Sergei Gonchar re-signing with the Penguins. “This doesn’t affect Sergei at all,” Shero said of the Letang deal. “This is part of our plan, to sign Kris Letang. I’m hoping we can have Sergei back and, hopefully, after the season we can continue those discussions. [Gonchar] has been a fantastic player here for five years, and, hopefully, we’ll have him for more.” Talks between Gonchar’s agent and Shero will resume after the season. The Penguins won’t have a ton of money, so Gonchar will not get the same amount as he would if he explored the free agent market.
Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues may look at making some changes to their blueline this off-season. The Blues may look at moving Eric Brewer (1 year, $4.5 million left) and Barrett Jackman (2 years, $7.5 million left). Carlo Colaiacovo and Mike Weaver are UFAs, and Darryl Sydor could retire.
Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Both Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin practiced yesterday, with Gonchar more likely to play tonight. They will take the morning skate to see how it goes, then make a decision from there.
Robyn Norwood of the LA Times: Ryan Getzlaf (sprained left ankle) and Jonas Hiller (back spasms) will miss tonight’s game against the Avalanche.
Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The Boston Bruins have signed 2008 1st round pick (16th overall), Joe Colbourne to a 3 year entry level contract. Colbourne will report to the AHL Providence Bruins. It is reportedly worth $787,500 base with bonuses that could make it $1.1 million.
Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs will be one of eleven teams that will be wearing a new jersey design next year. Anaheim, Calgary, Columbus, Dallas, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Malkin Still Out … Coach and GM Getting Fired in Tampa? Getzlaf Shut Down for Year?

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Evgeni Malkin missed his 4th game in the last 5, due to a foot injury. The injury is apparently not long term, but a return date is not known.
  • Martin Fennelly of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Rick Tocchet and GM Brian Lawton could lose their jobs following the season. New owernship and another disappointing season could mean change is coming. Stamkos, St. Louis, and Hedman are probably on the only untouchables in their lineup.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks may consider shutting down Ryan Getzlaf for the remainder of the season due to his wonky ankle, and the fact that they are pretty much eliminated from the playoffs. As long as my fantasy team is in contention for the championship, I don’t think the Ducks should do this, as it will hurt the productivity of Corey Perry.
  • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs don’t have a player who stands in front of the net and collects the “garbage goals”. Zwolinski notes that Devils forward David Clarkson is a RFA, and could be a player the Leafs target via trade.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward was taking shots at practice yesterday and is eyeing a return next week. Ward has been out since February 3rd with a bad back. On the bad news front for the ‘Canes, Tuomo Ruutu will be out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury, surgery is scheduled for today.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk will look at some college free agents, but realizes the success rate of them making the NHL isn’t great. “I think you have to look and say that 97 percent probably aren’t going to play in our league, but there’s still a chance you can hit a home run on one and there’s definitely an opportunity to stock some depth in your organization,” Nieuwendyk said. The Stars will look at signing a player or 2.

Coaches Safe in Atlanta for Now … Getzlaf and Selanne Day-to-Day … Hudler Back with Wings Next Year?

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Anaheim Ducks were hit with a couple injuries on Sunday, with the MRI’s done yesterday. Ryan Getzlaf has an inflamed left ankle (the same ankle that was hurt before the Olympics), but the MRI showed no additional damage. Teemu Selanne has a slightly sprained shoulder, and will be re-evaluated today. Both are listed as day-to-day.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Vivlamore interviews Thrashers GM, Don Waddell. When asked if there will a be a coaching change (John Anderson) before the end of the season, Waddell said no. The coaching situation will be re-evaluated after the season though. Waddell talked to Pavel Kubina and Colby Armstrong during Olympic break, both are upcoming UFA’s, and he plans to talk to them again in a month or so.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Ken Holland will once again try to convince Jiri Hudler to leave the KHL and come back to the Red Wings. Hudler has a 2 year, $5.75 million arbitration deal from last summer that he is bound too. His KHL deal was for 2 years, and between $3-5 million a season, tax free. With his KHL season done after a 1st round playoff exit, he’s not eligible to play for the Wings this year, but could suit up for them next season.
  • Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild are expected to sign UMass center, Casey Wellman this morning. The college free agent picked the Wild over 21 other teams. Wellman was 6th in goals this past season, scoring 23 times. He’ll be signing a 2 year deal worth $1.8 million. He’ll be in the lineup this year (ineligible for the playoffs).
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators could be welcoming back Nick Foligno and Chris Campoli to their lineup as soon as tonight against the Maple Leafs. If Foligno is able to go, Jesse Winchester will most likely be out. If Campoli plays, Brian Lee will most likely be the odd man out.

NHL Rumors from Twitter – Feb. 10th

4:50: John Shannon: According to Mike Brophy, if Ryan Getzlaf can’t go for Team Canada, Jeff Carter will be his replacement.

4:30: Craig Custance: If the Panthers lose on Thursday to the Canucks, they could be open for business. They are getting calls for Dominic Moore, Dennis Seidenberg, and Jordan Leopold.

12:30: Bob McKenzie: Los Angeles Kings put Brandon Segal on waivers. New Jersey Devils put Mike McKenna on waivers.

12:25: TheFourthPeriod:The Kings still like Ray Whitney, but other options are opening up.

12:15: Tim Panaccio: Despite the trade rumors that the Flyers are interested in Marty Turco, the Flyers continue to say no. A bit cap hit.

Are the Preds and Ducks Buyers or Sellers? Injury to Getzlaf, Franzen Returns Tonight

  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have not asked Tim Thomas to waive his no trade clause, not yet at least.
  • Mike Heika of the Star-Telegram: With Tom Hicks and the Dallas Stars having some money issues, they will once again be under a tight budget for next year. The Stars have an internal cash budget of $45 million. They’ve had trouble selling the more expensive seats, and will be rolling back some of those prices next year.
  • John Glennon of the Tennessean: The Preds are another team that aren’t sure if they are buyers or sellers. They could use some scoring depth and a penalty killer. Dan Hamhuis and one of Dan Ellis or Pekka Rinne could be available for trade, as all will be UFA’s at the end of the season.
  • Andy Strickland via Twitter: The Blues have told other GM’s that Carlo Colaiacovo is available.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Ducks are unsure if they are buyers or sellers this year, as they are hanging around the last playoff spot. They could bring in some guys to bolster their playoff chances, or they could become sellers with assets like Scott Niedermayer, Saku Koivu, Teemu Selanne, and others.
  • Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Andy Sutton and Dwayne Roloson might become available on the Isle. A few teams have inquired about Sutton already.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings will welcome back Johan Franzen tonight, Drew Miller is also expected to play. Niklas Kronwall won’t be in the lineup as he’s still waiting for a knee brace. Tomas Holmstrom is a game time decision. Ole-Kristian Tollefsen cleared waivers and was assigned to Grand Rapids of the AHL.
  • Robyn Norwood of the LA Times: Ducks all-star and Team Canada member, Ryan Getzlaf, suffered an ankle sprain last night. Initial X-Rays were negative, and a MRI is scheduled for today.
  • Ray Parrillo of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Ray Emery missed his 3 straight game because of a sore hip. He had an MRI done on it to determine what is causing the issue. They are optomistic that it’s not a long term problem.

Around the Boards: Halak or Price? Wheeler out of the Bruins lineup soon? Grabovski and Primeau out for Leafs, Selanne and Getzlaf back soon

    • Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens seem unsure on how to handle the trade/no-trade/re-sign situation with goalies Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price. Halak had started 6 of 7 games, after not really playing for close to a month. Halak trade rumors have quieted down the last couple weeks. Both goalies have shown they have the ability to be a #1 in the NHL, but then both have shown they could be #2′s in the league.
    • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: With the newly signed Miro Satan, and Milan Lucic getting close to returning, Vladimir Sobotka and the struggling Blake Wheeler could find themselves out of the Bruins lineup.
    • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs have 9 UFA and 4 RFA this year, and Burke will be paying close attention to all. Some will probably be re-signed, and others might be trade bait at the deadline. Matt Stajan and Vesa Toskala will be at the top of the list.
    • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will be without centers Mikhail Grabovski for 6 weeks with a broken wrist, and Wayne Primeau for 2-to-4 weeks with a knee injury. Center John Mitchell is now healthy and ready to go. Richard Wallin will mostly be back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch.
    • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne (out for over a month) and Ryan Getzlaf (out a week) should both return later this week. That is good news for Ducks fans and Corey Perry, who has only 1 goal and 5 points in the last 13 games. The Ducks have also called up center MacGregor Sharp.
    • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Columbus has been going with a ‘win and you’re in’ policy with goalie Steve Mason and Mathieu Garon since mid December. Mason has played well of late so this policy will be void, at least temporarily.
