Crosby not ready to start in 1st round … Rangers season down to today, Gaborik’s last game with them? Adam Foote retires

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby took part in another non-contact practice yesterday, but is not expected play in the start of the 1st round next week, “He has a couple more steps to go in his rehabilitation before he can even think about returning to play,” Bylsma said. “I don’t know how fast that’s going to happen. I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Considering he has a couple more steps to go through, it seems like anything in the immediate future is out of the question.”
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers season comes down to today, “The Rangers must win and the Hurricanes must lose, whether in regulation, overtime or via a shootout. Or if the Rangers fall in overtime, they need a regulation loss by the Hurricanes to advance.”Chris Drury is expected to play, the 1st time since Feb. 3rd. Mats Zuccarello was recalled earlier in the week, so it’s likely that Sean Avery will be scratched, and the Matt Gilroy RWer experiment is over. Brooks thinks it’s possible that this could be Marian Gaborik’s final game in a Ranger uniform. He was benched for part of the 3rd period on Thursday. Gaborik still has 3 years left on his contract at $7.5 million per season.
  • Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings winger Dustin Brown temporarily left last night’s game after crashing into the boards. Nothing is really known about the injury, he finished the game but didn’t talk to the media after the game as he was receiving treatment.
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Ryan Jones will be UFA, but hopes that he can stay in Edmonton.

“Right now my mindset is to get something done here, but I’ve earned the opportunity to be an unrestricted free agent. If it doesn’t work out (here), I’ll have to go a different route.

“There’s been talks going on all along (between the Oilers brass and his agent), whether its about numbers or just trying to feel things out. By no means have either one of us moved on.

“My thoughts right now are that I hope to be here. If not I’ll move on.”

  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray got a 3 year contract extension yesterday, but coach Cory Clouston may coach his last game for them today. According to Brennan, “Murray isn’t bringing him back because Murray doesn’t want him back. That plain, that simple.”

Injury notes on Gagner, Steen, Jackman, Brassard, Sullivan … Kubina gets 3 games for elbow with video

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers Sam Gagner is done for the year after a tendon was severed in his hand after being inadvertently by teammate Ryan Jones. “You hop over the boards 50 times a game and this one time a teammate is reaching for a water bottle,” said Jones. “I heard him yell but then I went onto the ice and by the time I came back he was in the dressing room. This is the first for me something like this happening. I talked to Sam (after the game in Washington). He thought he’d be fine.”
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Alex Steen and defenseman Barret Jackman are likely done for the season. Steen suffered a high ankle sprain, and Jackman has a fractured finger that requires surgery. Both are out 4-6 weeks.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who just returned from a hand injury, blocked a shot with his ankle, missed practice yesterday and is questionable for tonight.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution: 2 groups and 1 individual are in discussions to possibly purchase the Atlanta Thrashers, and keeping them in Atlanta. 2 entities are local. 2 other groups showed interest in buying the Thrashers, Hawks and the Philips Arena. Documents presented in court say the Thrashers have lost $130 million in the last 5 years. (only lost $130 million … no wonder there are 5 groups interested … sarcasm)
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators forward Steve Sullivan underwent a procedure last week to help his cronic groin injury, and would keep him out for 4-6 weeks.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Craig Anderson’s agent and Senators GM Bryan Murray will talk again after the GM meeting. An offer could be in the 3 years and $9.3 million range.

“I’m not giving ultimatums here,” Justin Duberman, the representative for goalie Craig Anderson, stressed in a phone call Thursday. “But I am saying that, when you deal with free agents, players talk. And they want to go to organizations that treat their players right. Ottawa is of those places, because the people that run this place are honest.

“I hope that the people who are there remain. I think they know what they’re doing. They’re honest, and they’ve treated the players I’ve had there with professionalism and respect. I’ve got all the time in the world for honest people in this business because they’re hard to find.

“If you were to ask Craig how he’s been treated since he got there, it’s been first-class all the way. I think that comes from the top.

“I’m not giving ultimatums, but we’re very, very comfortable with the structure that is in place currently. Very comfortable with it.”

  • Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: The Islanders and center Zenon Konopka haven’t had any contract extension talks yet. The Isles were asking for a 2nd round pick for him at the trade deadline. There has been “some disappointment” according to his agent, but Zenon wants to stay.
  • Tim Sasssone of the Daily Herald: Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina was suspended 3 games for his elbow on Blackhawks center David Bolland.

Do you think the NHL got it right with a 3 games suspension?

Around the Boards: Savard extension soon, Rangers-Habs talking? Keith odd man out?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Bruins and Marc Savard are getting closer on a long term extension, in the $6-6.5 million range for 4 or 5 seasons.
  • Stephan Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins are getting healthier, with Milan Lucic expected to return this week, and Marc Savard could be back next week.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • Jonas Gustavsson will be an RFA at the end of the season, and there might be teams that would sign him to a $5 million offer sheet. Burke can’t negotiate with ‘The Monster’ until January.
    • The Predators are trying to unload RWer Ryan Jones and his $975,000 contract.
    • The Rangers and Canadiens have had talks involving Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn.
    • The Oilers have inquired about Sergei Kostitsyn, a junior linemate of Sam Gagne.
    • The Islanders will most likely trade Martin Biron once Rick DiPietro returns. The Kings or Sabres are possible destinations. I’d also think the Wings might be monitoring his play.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Hearld: The Blackhawks could be looking to trade for a 2nd line center to replace the injured David Bolland (out 3-4 months with back injury). Patrick Sharp could be moved into that role if a trade can’t be worked out. Hurricanes’ Matt Cullen and his $2.875 cap hit might be a fit if Bolland was placed on LTIR.
  • Jay Zawaski of Chicago Now: With Toews and Kane possibly close to signing contract extensions; if they sign with a hometown discount, they might be able to keep Duncan Keith. If they re-sign for fair market value, Keith is probably gone.
