Panthers looking for an explanation … Backes at $5 million? MRI for Armstrong … Spezza playing Saturday?

- Ian Mendes via twitter: Florida Panthers coach Peter DeBoer said that Dale Tallon will seek to get further explanation on the Colton Orr’s goal from last night. (video of goal at bottom of this entry with Kypreos, Watters and Millard talking about it).
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: St. Louis Blues forward David Backes will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, both sides would like to get something done, but there is no rush. Backes may look to deals signed by Patrice Bergeron and Ryan Kesler as comparables, in the $5 million range. Kesler may have a more offensive upside that Backes, but plays a similar all-round game. Backes intangibles make him a valuable commodity.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: MRI on Colby Arstrong will be this afternoon. Luca Caputi expected to get the call-up from the Maple Leafs. Update: Nick Kypreos via twiter: Colby Armstrong may need surgery on his hand, could be out 4-6 weeks.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson, Milan Michalek, Robyn Lehner and Filip Kuba are not on the ice at Senators practice. Ian Mendes noted that coach Clouston says that Spezza is targeting Saturday versus Boston, unlikely for Thursday.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Bryan McCabe is happy in Florida and is hopeful to get another contract from the Panthers.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Jeff Skinner was told to find a place to live in Raleigh, he won’t be going back to Kitchener of the OHL.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Atlanta Thrashers GM Dudley told Custance that there is a 99% chance that Burmistrov will stay with the club.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Erik Ersberg will take his KHL medical today, expected to sign with Salavat Yulaev after.

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers and Marc Staal continue to work towards a deal that could happen by the start of training camp on Friday. The contract they are working on could be longer than 4 years. The Rangers own his rights for 4 years (would be a restricted free agent), so going over 4 years the Rangers would have to spend a bit more money to buy back some of his unrestricted free agent years. Comparisons could be Shea Weber ($4.5 million), Ryan Suter ($3.5 million) and Brent Seabrook ($3.5 million), though none of those deals bought in to the UFA years.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The New Jersey Devils can appeal the League’s decision by going to the NHL Board of Governors.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Bryce Salvador and Colin White are said to be available, only one would need to go.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Roberto Luongo gave up the Canucks team captaincy, with possibly Henrik Sedin taking over the duties. Ryan Kesler is also an option for the team.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Rick Nash will start training camp on right wing, but coach Scott Arniel said not to read into much in the first couple days of camp.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Vesa Toskala turned down a deal from the Calgary Flames earlier this summer that would have paid over $1 million. He turned it down as he wants to a number 1 goalie. A Swedish team had interest in him, but the asking price was too high. Other European options are available.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have invited Peter Schaefer to training camp. Schaefer was bought out by the Bruins before last season. He’ll battle for a 3rd – 4th line spot.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Daymond Langkow hasn’t been fully cleared for the Calgary Flames training camp. Langkow has been recovering for over 5 months from a fractured vertebrae at the base of his neck after being hit with a puck.
- Toronto Sun: The Canadian government may not put up the roughly $180 million needed for a NHL arena in Quebec City. Prime Minister Steven Harper said there are other NHL and CFL teams that are looking for some money. “We’re all fans of professional sports, we know they’re important to our communities,” Harper said. “But professional sports are first and foremost the responsibility of the private sector.”
- Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier has been under fire from fans and media this summer. The trading of Jaroslav Halak didn’t sit well with some, and the QMJHL commissioner said the Canadiens “don’t take the scouting and signing of Quebec-born players seriously enough.” Andrei Markov and Brian Gionta are the leading candidates to be the teams next captain. Lars Ellar (brought over in the Halak trade) and PK Subban could crack the lineup. The Canadiens have 20 players on 1-way contracts.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: With Scott Niedermayer retiring, the Ducks will move to ‘Plan B’ with their defense needing an overhaul. Teemu Selanne is still undecided if he’ll retire or not, the two sides will talk again next week. Three Eastern executives have said that Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, and Kris Versteeg are being shopped, Patrick Sharp isn’t. The asking price for Byfuglien is a 1st round pick and a prospect (good luck with that one). One GM said they are asking too much for each of the three. GM Dale Tallon said after he traded Nathan Horton to Boston that he had offers of players and no draft picks, and offers of draft picks and no players. He felt getting a top-4 defenseman and 1st round pick was the right mix. A dozen teams inquired about Horton, but only 3-4 serious bidders. Matt Cooke re-signed with the Penguins for 3 years, and a $1.8 million cap hit. Penguins GM Ray Shero and Sergei Gonchar’s agent will meet in LA at the draft to continue their talks on getting a deal done. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson once again says that there have been no discussions with Ottawa about Jason Spezza.
- Terry Jones in the Toronto Sun: Pat Quinn may have inadvertently tipped the Oilers drafting plan. In the press conference where he was named the senior advisor and his head coaching job was given to Tom Renney.
“This team could have three kids come in at 19 years old and I’ve worked with all of them,” he said.
Quinn coached Taylor Hall to a gold medal at the 2008 IIHF U-18 championship. He’s never coached Tyler Seguin.
“Depending on who they draft, of course,” Quinn added.
- Darren Dreger via Twitter: Dreger wonders how long it will be before Kaberle to Bruins discussions start. Nothing yet. Savard is rumored to be available.
- Larry Brooks via Twitter: Marc Savard has been aggressively shopped since the end of the season.
- Caylan Davis of NESN: From Peter Chiarelli, “I’m not going to trade away the No. 2 pick but certainly I’d like to trade away the other picks because certainly we’d like to get better now too. ” The Bruins have 2 2nd round picks this year, 2 2011 1st round picks and 2 2011 2nd round picks.
- David Pollack of the San Jose Mercury News: Evgeni Nabokov has been informed by Sharks GM Doug Wilson that he is no longer in the their plans. Nabokov will now hit the open market on July 1st. It appears the Sharks will go with the new NHL fad in going with cheaper goaltending. Wilson will now focus on re-signing UFA Patrick Marleau, and other free agents: Joe Pavelski, David Setoguchi, Manny Malhotra, Scott Nicol and Nicklas Wallin.
- TSN: The Vancouver Canucks may be one team that is interested in acquiring potential Chicago Blackhawks salary cap casualty Andrew Ladd. What makes this interesting is that Andrew Ladd and Ryan Kesler have had a running battle this past season.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: One of Peter Regin’s agents (Regin plays for the Ottawa Senators in case you haven’t heard of him) told a Danish TV station that Regin could get an offer sheet similar to what Tomas Vanek received from Edmonton, which in case you forgot was $50 million. I wonder if his agent is familiar with who Peter Regin is.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Cross one player off the Maple Leafs wish list with the trading of Nathan Horton to the Bruins. It was rumored the Leafs liked Horton, but it’s not known the level of interest the Leafs had, or if they made an offer.
- Chip Alexander via Twitter: The Carolina Hurricanes are expected to stay at #7 in Friday’s draft.
Kesler Signs a 6-Year Contract Extension with the Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks have looked up Ryan Kesler through the 2015-16 season. The 25-year-old is having a career year with 21 goals and 45 assists in 71 games so far this season.In 391 career games, Kesler has scored 86 goals, added 120 assists for 206 points, with 341 PIMs.
Kesler is a solid 2-way player, who’s offensive game has improved over the past couple seasons. The deal is for 6 years and $30 million, a cap number and yearly salary of $5 million.
Kings and Hurricanes might have had a trade worked out, but … Flames looking for a Center? Ponikarovsky, Staying or Going?

- Bob McKenzie of TSN: The Kings and Hurricanes were far enough in talks, that the Kings talked to Whitney about an extension. Whitney wanted 3 years, the Kings were thinking 1. The Kings were going to give a draft pick, most likely a 2nd rounder, and a prospect (McKenzie guesses either Colten Teubert or Viacheslav Voinov). Some think Whitney is raising the bar until a team that he really wants to go to steps in, mainly the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins haven’t inquired yet.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: With the Edmonton Oilers pushing hard to make a move, Ethan Moreau is one name on the block. If they were to sweeten the pot with a draft pick, they Leafs could offer up Garnet Exelby or Lee Stempniak. Moreau is under contract for next year at $2 million.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Even with the recent trades made by the Flames, they still could use a #1 center. They may take a run at Mike Ribeiro or Tomas Plekanec.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks or maybe the Kings might have an interest in Paul Kariya.
- Bill Lankhof of the Toronto Sun: So far Alexei Ponikarovsky has dodged any trades made by Brian Burke. He is only 1 of 2 Leafs players (Kaberle the other) who have been with the team for more than 2 years. There is a good chance that he’s dealt at the deadline (Pittsburgh?), for a high draft, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Burke keeps him and resigns him. If someone offered them a 1st rounder, I’m sure Burke would jump on that, but if it’s only a 2nd rounder, he might think of keeping him. The Leafs still need to score goals and win games this year and next.
- TSN Staff: The Vancouver Canucks have halted contract talks with Ryan Kesler, Mason Raymond and Willie Mitchell.
- Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks, and soon to be UFA Evgeni Nabokov, will not be talking contract extension until after the season
- Elliotte Friedman via Twitter: Michael Ryder of the Bruins has been made available.
- Kevin Allen via Twitter: Petr Sykora should decide this week who his new team will be.

- If The Globe and Mail isn`t on your daily list of sites to read, you should add it. Aside from excellent hockey coverage, they also have a weekly podcast, done every Thursday I think. Here is yesterday`s podcast.
- James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail: Ron Wilson has his fingers crossed that Jonas Gustavsson can go Saturday against the Canucks, but Monday against Anaheim is more likely. Struggling blueliner, Luke Schenn, found himself without a defensive partner at practice. Could he be the odd man out on Saturday?
- Kevin Dupont of the Boston Globe: It doesn`t look like Brendan Shanahan is on the Boston Bruins radar to fill the roster spot, though 1 team is apparently considering him. But Shanahan agent, Rick Curran said “You know, roster limits, salary-cap restrictions. It’s just a matter of remaining patient and ready.’’
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers have juggled their top 2 lines with Bryan Little joining Todd White and Slava Kozlov. Their 1st line now consists of Ilya Kovalchuk, Nik Antropov and Max Afinogenov.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Ryan Kesler is in the final year of his contract, earning $1.75 million this year, and is looking for a contract extension, and potentially a lot more money. Kesler`s agent has already met with Canucks management on several occassions.
- Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register: Anaheim Ducks forward, Evgeny Artyukhin, was suspended for 3 games for slew footing Dallas Stars defenceman, Matt Niskanen in Wednesday nights game. This is Artyukhin`s 3rd time being suspended. Nishanen left the game, and did not play last night.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook, both injured on Wednesday, did not practice yesterday. Coach Joel Quenneville said both are progressing and could play Saturday.
