- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Bruins forward Milan Lucic has a 1 pm hearing today with Brendan Shanahan regarding his hit on Ryan Miller. McKenzie reminds everyone that hearings don’t always mean there will be a suspension. McKenize also notes that when teams have a break in the schedule like the Bruins do, it’s not unusual for Shanahan to investigate further.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Senators captain Daniel Aldredsson will turn 39 next month and hasn’t committed to next season despite having 1 year left on his deal. His salary will drop from $4.5 million to $1 million next year.
“It’s more about how I feel and how I play this year.” …. “You want to feel like you can contribute and it’s still fun to play. If I do, if I’m still healthy, I have every intention to play another year. But if my body says it’s too much, I’ll have to consider it [retirement]. Right now, I’m very open.”
Teams will likely be calling the Senators at the trade deadline about Alfredsson’s availability. When asked if he’d consider accepting a trade to make a run at the Cup:
“It’s a totally justifiable question,” Alfredsson said. “My stance, now anyway, is that I’m with Ottawa and I’m here to stay. Would I like to win a Cup? Of course. I’ve had my chances in Ottawa. I don’t know if it feels that it’s justified to try and go to another team and try to win it. … We built something in Ottawa. I’ve been part of so many things, through many ups and downs, and I want to be part of this, too. That’s where I am right now.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wonders if Rick Nash really wants to stay in Columbus much longer. He has a no-trade clause. What could the Blue Jackets get for Nash? 3 nice pieces? Matheson suggests any 3 of “Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, James VanRiemsdyk, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros, goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and a first-round draft pick” from the Flyers. Pick 3 from the Kings: “Jack Johnson or Dustin Brown, Jonathan Bernier, 2010 first-round defender Derek Forbot, Slova Voynov and recently graduated junior forward Tyler Toffoli.”
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: There are rumors that the Blue Jackets could be interested in Bruins backup Tuukka Rask or Islanders Evgeni Nabokov.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello doesn’t have an out clause in his contract that allows him to return to Europe if he remains in the AHL by a certain date. Zuccarello’s agents are likely to want to meet with the Rangers management if he’s to remain in Hartford, but GM Glen Sather doesn’t seem to have much interest in obliging” “Why would we agree to anything like that?” Sather said in an email. “There’s no such agreement.”

- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller will be out for an undetermined amount of time after he suffered a concussion after being hit by Milan Lucic. This is Miller’s 2nd concussion in 8 months.
“If this hit and other types of hits like this are not suspended, we are opening up the possibility of losing goaltenders to injury. And not just injury, but concussion,” Regier said. “… When I look at the position of goaltending, in a lot of ways it’s not unlike quarterback in football. I feel very strongly the protection has to be provided and players committing these types of action should be punished.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk’s lower-body injury falls into the “wide category of groin injuries.” Kovalchuk played since Nov. 3rd.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook crashed into the board during the 2nd period of last night’s game. Coach Joel Quenneville said he’s day-to-day and that they’ll know more about the injury by Tuesday morning. Center David Bolland missed his 3rd straight game, but is expected to play soon. He’ll travel with the team to Vancouver.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: The Kings have put Dustin Penner on the IR with a hand injury. It is retroactive to Nov. 10th, so he’ll be out for at least the next 2 games.
- Detroit Red Wings via twitter: Red Wings defenseman Ian White has a fractured cheek bone and won’t play on their upcoming road trip.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Senators: The Senators have placed winger Chris Neil on the IR after he suffered an ankle injury last Wednesday.
- CP in the Globe and Mail: Jets defenseman Derek Meech is expected to be out at least 6 weeks after having surgery to repair a lower-body injury.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Part of the reason there have been no firings in Columbus are because of financial concerns. They have the 5th highest payroll at $63.9 million and they will lose a “boatload of money.” They had interest in LA Kings assistant GM Ron Hextall. One of the reasons the Coyotes don’t want to give in Kyle Turris is the precedent it would set for players coming out of their entry level deal. The Panthers may have been ready to trade Stephen Weiss before the season, but have since pulled him off the market. The David Booth trade helped secure his status with the team. There is nothing imminent on any Sam Gagner deal. The Islanders and Coyotes are looking for centers. The Canucks have been sniffing around the league for a defenseman. Teams have shown interest in Blue Jackets Antoine Vermette and Derick Brassard. The Senators would be interested in Vermette but may find it tough to take on his $3,75 million through 2014-15. The Jackets could move Rick Nash but that would be a tough in season trade to make. They haven’t shopped him around. The Sabres tried to trade for Blackhawks Patrick Kane during the offseason. Sources are saying that Evgeni Nabokov could end up in Phoenix.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Sources are saying that the NHLPA believes owners are hiding revenue from last season. The PA also believes the $25 million the league gets from Glendale to keep the Coyotes there should be counted as revenue. The Capitals and Predators are said to be part of a handful of teams “that have been cited for failure to declare hockey-related revenue.” The PA didn’t exercise their option to audit teams over the summer.”Because not only was the oversight foolish, it will prove costly to the players for, as Slap Shots has been told, the union is now prohibited from auditing past seasons regardless of the degree (if any) of malfeasance, misfeasance or just plain carelessness (uh, right) of those clubs who allegedly under-reported revenue to be shared with the athletes.”

- Slava Malmud via twitter: Sabres Ryan Miller’s trade value continues to fall. GM Darcy Regier could end up considering whose future considerations look better.
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Islanders GM Garth Snow said “nothing imminent” on the trade front. “If there’s a deal out there that makes our team better, we’ll always look at that,” Snow said. Winger Nino Niederreiter could play on Tuesday. Blake Comeau or Jay Pandolfo could be scratched.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik left last night’s game with an undisclosed injury. “He’s day-to-day. He got a cross-check and he’s fine,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “He’s not fine enough to play, but he, from what I’ve been told, is day-to-day.”

- Kevin Allen via twitter: Ducks defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky will out 4 weeks with a broken finger. Curtis Zupke via twitter: The Ducks aren’t expected to make any moves today. Kurtis Foster has been their 7th defenseman.
- Eric Francis via twitter: The Flames have put Niklas Hagman on re-waivers. Have to wait until 10 am on Monday to find out if anyone has claimed him. (He has a $3 million cap hit, he can be had for $1.5 million).
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Alex Goligoski has a broken thumb and is out about 4 weeks.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green will not be in the lineup tonight. Alexander Semin will play.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter will return tonight. Goaltender Mark Dekanich suffered a groin injury and could be out weeks. GM Scott Howson said they are not actively pursuing a goaltender. Evgeni Nabokov is a name they might consider. - Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Patrice Bergeron skated with the Bruins strength and conditioning coach yesterday before practice. He did some work with the team, so there may be hope that he can go tonight. He took part in some power play and penalty killing drills, and took a few shifts with linemates Recchi and Marchand. When asked if Bergeron was ruled out for Game 2, Julien said, “No comments.” Then he added, “I don’t know. Is that better?”
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Tyler Seguin practiced on the 1st power play unit with Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton, and later on the 2nd unit with Mark Recchi and Michael Ryder. “We’ve got different looks, we’ve got different players. We want to make the power play work. And it’s never a bad thing to have those guys go through it, and if at one point you need him, you need him,” Julien said. “And what I said (Sunday) was exactly what we wanted to do with Tyler. I mean he hadn’t played a playoff game yet, and you give him a little bit to chew and then you give him maybe opportunities if need be in other areas.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: “IF, and I said IF, ATL moves to WPG, conventional wisdom is WPG to Northwest, MIN to Central and NSH to Southeast. But…” “…due to time issues, notion of WPG playing 1 season in Southeast not out of question. Realignment would come 1 yr later. Still lotsa ifs.”
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Though there is no offical work, Paul Maurice is expected to return as the Hurricanes head coach next season. Ron Francis is expected to move to assistant GM from his assistant coaching position. Erik Cole could possibly re-sign with the Canes before July 1st, and Brandon Sutter could get a long term deal. Cory Stillman could also re-sign with the Hurricanes, and then move to the front office after he’s done playing. The Canes will look to re-sign Chad LaRose. Re-signing Joni Pitkanen and Jussi Jokinen will be tougher. If they are unable to re-sign Pitkanen, they will look at bringing in another defenseman. They will also look signing an experienced backup and 4th line center.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kings prospect Maxim Kitsyn said he’ll most likely start next year in the KHL.
- Chris Botta of the NY Times: The New Jersey Devils head coaching search will now start as all candidates are available to talk. Likely to get a call from Lou are Ken Hitchcock, Michel Therrien, Kirk Muller, Scott Gordon, Mike Haviland and Larry Robinson. They should have a head coach picked before the draft on June 24th.
- Chuck Gormley of the Deleware New Journal: There are whispers that the Flyers may make a pitch for Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist, Miikka Kiprusoff, Niklas Backstrom or Martin Brodeur. The only way to pull off a Miller, Lundqvist or Brodeur deal would be to involve a 3rd team. Kiprusoff will be 35 in October and makes $5.833 million. Backstrom has a $6 million cap hit and would require them to shed at least $3 million. They could trade Jeff Carter to the Wild. Gormley adds they could send Kris Versteeg and Matt Carle for Backstrom and perhaps Brent Burns (It would take a lot more than Versteeg and Carle to get Backstrom and Burns IMO).

- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Jacques Lemaire has once again stepped down as the New Jersey Devils head coach. Lemaire took over from John MacLean who was fired on Dec. 23rd after posting a 9-22-2 record. The Devils were 29-17-3 under Lemaire, and posted a 23-3-2 run.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg is battling a knee injury. “I don’t expect him to start the series,” Babcock said. “But he’s really pushing things, and he’s working hard at it, and he’ll be ready to go as soon as he can.” Niklas Kronwall should be ready for Game 1 after missing the last 5 games with an upper-body injury.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Blackhawks coach Joel Quennville on center David Bolland, “Hopefully he can be a part early in this first series.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe should be ready for Game 1.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sergei Bobrovsky will be the starting goalie for the Flyers in their 1st round match-up against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. Bobrovsky was 28-13-8 with a 2.59 GAA and .915 SV%. Miller was 34-22-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .916 SV%.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk now faces the tough decision on whether they want to re-sign Brad Richards, and if they can afford to sign him. Other Stars UFA’s are Jamie Langenbrunner, Karlis Skrastins, Brandon Segal, Jason Williams, Brian Sutherby and Jeff Woywitka. They also have to decide if they want to make a coaching change or not.
- Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: Don’t expect to hear any updates on Alex Tanguay and the Calgary Flames talks from Tanguay’s agent, Steve Kotlowitz. A decision should be made by May if ESPN and the NHL can come to terms on a TV deal.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Free agent Zenon Konopka is optimistic a deal will get down with the Islanders. It will be 8 weeks of rest with no surgery for several of his injuries.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes could have a different look next year as Eric Cole, Joni Pitkanen, Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, Cory Stillman, Pat Dwyer and Jay Harrison are UFA’s. GM Jim Rutherford said that re-signing Cole is a priority. They may be looking to make changes on their blueline, so Joni Pitkanen could be gone.

- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: In 2003-04, the Anaheim Ducks almost traded Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks were prepared to send Perry and a 2004 1st round pick to the Oilers for center Mike Comrie. Comrie was holding out, and the Oilers were wanting Comrie to repay $2.5 million of his original signing bonus. When he didn’t repay the signing bonus, the deal fell through, and he was later traded to Philly. The Ducks used the 2004 1st round pick to select Ladislav Smid.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Roman Hamrlik, a UFA at season’s end, hinted that it could be his last year in a Canadiens uniform. After the media named him the “Jacques Beauchamp Trophy” winner (goes to the unsung hero), “I’ve been doing this a long and especially (since) this is my last year, it’s an honour.” … “I know I’ve been playing with lots of good players this season. You guys had a choice and it’s a big honour for me.” P.K. Subban and Jaroslav Spacek are the only defenseman under contract for next year. Hamrlik, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski, Hal Gill, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara are all UFA’s.

- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe left last night’s game after 3 shifts with what coach Todd McLellan called a lower body tweak after the game. He was being evaluated after the game and more could be known today.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Tom Poti didn’t travel with the team to Toronto for tonight’s game. Green took part in full practice yesterday but didn’t take any contact. He hasn’t ruled out getting into a game before the playoffs start. Alex Semin had a maintenance day yesterday to help heal some nagging injuries. Boudreau said there is a “chance” he could miss 1 of the team’s 3 remaining games.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Taylor Hall was asked to join Team Canada for the World Championships, but won’t be good enough shape to go. Sense around New Jersey is that they will do all they can to re-sign Zach Parise, but will he want to stay?
- AP on NHL.com: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller took some shots yesterday at practice. He still thinks he’s day-to-day and hopes to play on Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Jhonas Enroth will start tonight against the Lightning.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Chris Drury is hoping to get back in the lineup for the playoffs.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Vincent Lecavalier said he will have no choice and will wear a visor when he returns. He may continue to wear it next year if he can adjust to it. TB Lightning via twitter: There was no structural damage to Lecavalier’s eye, and he’ll be a game time decision today.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said that Martin Havlat is doubtful to play in the final 3 games, as he has an upper body injury.
- Chris Vivalmore via twitter: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom won’t travel with the team to Nashville and New York.

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will have about $15 million in salary cap space next season after they re-sign RFA’s Tyler Bozak, Clarke MacArthur, James Reimer, and Luke Schenn. The Leafs are more than one player away, so spending a lot money on Brad Richards may not be the right move. It’s unlikely the Leafs will trade some of their young talent for expensive veterans. If Richards (31) is looking for a 3 year deal, he might be a fit for the Leafs, but he’ll be looking for longer term. Paul Stastny, if made available, could be a player the Leafs would be interested in. Cox wonders if Burke could try to package his 2 1st round picks and a Kulemin or Gunnarson to move up in the draft and grab a top prospect (top 4), but that would tough.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks there are 3 restricted free agents to keep an eye on. Steven Stamkos: He probably would like one of those large 12 year, $120 million contracts, but the Lightning more interested in a 6 year, $8.5 million per season deal. Zach Parise: Parise could head to arbitration. He could sign a 1 year deal and become an unrestricted free agent next year. He could get a deal in the $5.5 million range. Shea Weber: The Predators aren’t big spenders, and Weber could be worth $6-6.5 million. Islanders coach Jack Capuano is likely to be named their full time coach. Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun are the top goalies on the market, look for the Avalanche to go after Vokoun. Garrioch thinks Ottawa’s Cory Clouston, Minnesota’s Todd Richards and Florida’s Peter DeBoer could all be looking for new work next year. Most managerial/coaching positions in Columbus may not be safe despite what their team president is saying.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: A source told LeBrun there is “no way” the Maple Leafs go after Ilya Bryzgalov this off-season. Goalie coach Francois Allaire and Bryzgalov don’t get along, and they also believe they have a starter in James Reimer. Their current plan is to see Jonas Gustavsson does in training camp. They could pick a goalie off waivers or bring back Giguere on a cheap one year deal. The Capitals hope to have Dennis Wideman back sometime during the playoffs. Mike Green feels he’s ready to go, and could play in a game or 2 before the playoffs. Tom Poti is skating, but they don’t know when he’ll return from the groin injury. It’s expected that Adam Foote could announce in the next 7-10 days that he’s retiring. The Ducks have some goaltending issues to address this offseason. Ray Emery will be a UFA, they are concerned about Jonas Hiller’s vertigo issues (3 more year, $4.5 million cap hit), and they have Dan Ellis for 1 more year at $1.5 million.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Ryan Miller is still unable to practice and did not travel with the team to Washington. He is still bothered by an upper body injury caused by a Dian Phaneuf slap shot. Jordan Leopold has been unable to see a hand specialist for the last week as he’s had the flu and then pneumonia.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Pavel Datsyuk is expected to play today. Niklas Kronwall is still not ready to go.
- Eric Stephens of OC Register: Ducks defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky left the game with an upper body injury after being hit by Doug Murray of the Sharks. He was favoring his shoulder and will be re-evaluated today.
- Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Alex Edler could return on Thursday against the Wild but Saturday against the Flames is more likely.

- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller admitted that he’s still having some vertigo related symptoms. He doesn’t know when he’ll be fully recovered or when he could return to game action.
“Yeah, it’s something that’s still up and down,” Hiller said in his first extended comments since that start. ”Some days are better, some days are not so good. I guess it’s just going to take its time. I still found out that I’m not quite where I wanted to be. All I can do is give myself time. Do my exercise. Do my stuff.
“Hopefully it’s going to get better. I kind of like stopped setting myself a timeline or anything because nobody can really tell me how long it’s going to take.”
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller could return on Saturday against the Capitals or Sunday against the Hurricanes.
“He has an upper-body injury that we list currently day-to-day, not week-to-week. Right now we’re on day-to-day,” said Regier, who declined to say whether Miller underwent concussion testing. “I’m going to comment on only an upper-body injury. That’s the extent of it.”
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski (broken orbital bone) could return in the next couple days, possibly tomorrow. Center Martin Hanzal (undisclosed) could be back before the end of the season.
- Joe MacDonald of ESPN Boston: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli on Tomas Kaberle contract situation,
“There hasn’t been any beyond the initial discussion I had with his agent and we decided to talk after the season,” Chiarelli said. “I have a good relationship with his agent and I expect there to be good negotiations once the season is over. This period is also a feeling-out period for both Tomas and for us, so that’s the way we’re approaching it.”
- Joe MacDonald of ESPN Boston: Mark Recchi has played 23 seasons and had this to say, “If we win a championship, I’m gone.” If the Bruins don’t win this year, he said he’d consider coming back for another year.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blue center TJ Oshie will meet with GM Doug Armstrong and coach Davis Payne today to discuss if there is any further discipline for his missed practiced. Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: TJ Oshie’s 2 game suspension for missing practice may cost him more in the long run. He is a RFA at seasons end, and his ‘responsibility issue’ may factor into contract talks.

- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise has his next scheduled medical examination on March 2nd, and is hoping to get the go ahead to begin skating, though it would be a while away before he is able to practice with teammates. They tried to get the date moved up but were unsuccessful.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Burke said the Flyers were the only team to “meet our price” for Versteeg. Burke still hasn’t given up on this season and has the 3rd round pick in play already. “There were multiple offers, multiple inquiries. We shopped this deal hard. In the end, we didn’t think this package would be there on Feb. 28 (at the NHL trade deadline).” Christian Hanson was called up from the Marlies. Marlies goalie Jussi Rynnas broke his finger, Jonas Gustavsson is still out with his heart issue, so trading JS Giguere may have changed.
- Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres need a backup goalie they can trust as Ryan Miller has started 31 games in a row, and the Sabres play 16 games in 29 days. They don’t have faith in Lalime, so they could go with Jhonas Enroth and find out if he’s capable, and if he’s not they need to trade for one at the deadline. Mike Harrington via twitter: Ruff said this morning on the radio that Enroth will start tonight and Miller will go tomorrow.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Marek Zidlicky took part in his first practice yesterday “where he was engaged in battle drills.” “I feel better, but it’s not ready,” Zidlicky said. “I don’t want to say a couple more days, but we will see. I’d like to play tomorrow, but it’s day-to-day.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Mike Cammalleri took another step close to returning to the Canadiens lineup in time for the Heritage Classic on Saturday. He practiced with teammate for the first time yesterday since suffering a shoulder separation on Jan. 18th. He’s not playing tonight, doubtful for Thursday, but hoping for Saturday.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards will be out of the Stars lineup tonight, and might miss tomorrows game in Calgary and possibly Saturday against the Canucks. Richards was “shook up” by a hit on Sunday on the last shift of the game. Nicklas Grossman is doubtful for the next 2 games. Matt Niskanen should be able to go in place of Grossman.

- Jennifer Pagliaro of the Globe and Mail: Waffles have been a hot topic around the Toronto Maple Leafs recently, with the 2nd waffle throwing incident taking place on Monday. But this time the culprit was caught. Joe Robb was charged with mischief after he thew a box of Eggo’s over the boards during play. Joe is a ‘diehard’ fan, but is frustrated with the team. “I didn’t intend for it to hurt nobody and maybe I shouldn’t have done it while the play was going on,” the 31-year-old Oakville resident told The Globe and Mail Wednesday. “I totally love the Leafs and that’s pretty much my hobby, to watch the team play.” He’s been banned “indefinitely” from the ACC and other MLSE venues. In case you haven’t seen the video, it’s at the bottom of this post. Keep your eye on just above the Rogers sign to see Joe in action.
- John Niyo of the Detroit News: Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk will be out for at least a month after breaking a bone in his right hand last night. Datsyuk tripped over Mikael Samuelsson and fell awkwardly with less than 2 minutes left in the first.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Dreger wonders what kind of trade interested there would be in Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller will go for career win number 200. He would be the 67th goalie to reach 200 wins. The 30 year old Miller has posted a career 199-114-37 record.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Keith Yandle is the Coyotes leading scorer and will be an RFA at season’s end. He’s currently making $1.3 million and will be looking for a nice raise. GM Don Maloney can’t do anything until the new owner takes over. Both sides will be paying attention to other RFAs Shea Weber, Jack Johnson, and Drew Doughty.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marian Gaborik was unable to practice yesterday and will not be in the lineup for the NY Rangers tonight. Gaborik could return on Monday. Michael Del Zotto is out with the flue. The Norwegian Hobbit Mats Zuccarello was called up to yesterday. Ryan Callahan will be out until February with a broken left hand.
- Ken B|elson of the NY Times: Practically every team has inquired about hosting or participating in the 2012 Winter Classic, the Commish Gary Bettman, said it’s too early to say where it will be held next New Year’s Day. The league had hoped to hold a game at Yankee stadium but the “Pinstripe Bowl” is held a few days before New Year’s Day.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: SJ Sharks Douglas Murray skated yesterday but it’s still not known if he’ll return tonight. Antero Nittymaki (12-3-3, 2.31 GAA) may have the upper hand over Antti Niemi (6-8-2, 3.15 GAA). Coach Todd McLellan will still continue to use both goalies, but my go with the hotter goalie more often.
- Don O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: St. Louis Blues injured forward TJ Oshie skated for 45 minutes before yesterday’s optional skate. Oshie broke his left ankle on Nov. 10th and is projected to be re-evaluated in mid-February. Patrick Berglund left Tuesday’s game early but will be in the lineup tonight.
- James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk (NBC Sports): Cam Ward is likely to play tonight despite having an infection on his forehead that swelled up so bad it almost closed his left eye. Matt Bradley will be out for 2-4 weeks with a broken finger. Patrick Kaleta is listed as day-to-day after only playing 1 period on Tuesday.

- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Phoenix Coyotes center Matthew Lombardi has been out since the 2nd game of the season with a concussion, still doesn’t know when he’ll able to return. Regarding physical activity Lombardi said, “I haven’t been able to do anything.”
- Jonas Siegel of AM640: Jonas Gustavsson is expected to start in net for the Maple Leafs on Friday and Saturday. JS Giguere is getting closer to returning, “If I had a weekend of practice ahead of me I’d say maybe Tuesday would be a great day,” said Giguere. “But who knows, might be before that, might be after that.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Marc-Andre Fleury will make his 7th straight start tonight for the Penguins. Brent Johnson, who’s had an inner-ear problem, says he’s ready to go.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Steve Mason will start for the Blue Jackets on Friday versus the Red Wings. Portzline also reports that Marc Methot will take part in the morning skate and could play tonight.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Alex Auld will get the start for the Canadiens tonight versus the Thrashers.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Jhonas Enroth was returned to the AHL, so it looks like Ryan Miller is ready to go. Derek Roy (elbow and migraines) should be ready for tonight’s game against the Maple Leafs. Craig Rivet will likely be a healthy scratch again.

- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Michal Neuvirth is day-to-day with a lower body injury after tweaking something yesterday morning. Semyon Varlamov was recalled but didn’t get his skates until the second period, the Capitals were given permission to switch backup goalies during the game, Braden Holtby started. Mike Green did not play the final 13 minutes of the 3rd, Tyler Sloan left in the 1st period, more will be known this morning
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Rob Niedermayer had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out 2 weeks. Ryan Miller practiced after resting his injured groin over the weekend. Drew Stafford and his injured shoulder practice but did not take contact, he could be available this weekend. Jochen Hecht skated after practice, he’s nursing an upper body injury, but is expect to be able to go tomorrow night. Tim Connolly left in the middle of practice and is questionable. The Sabres recalled Luke Adam and Colin Stuart from Portland of the AHL.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: The Tampa Bay Lightning should know Wednesday morning if Simon Gagne will go versus the Rangers, said to be “very probable”.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Stephen Weiss aggravated an ankle injury Saturday night and was pulled from the game as a precaution, it isn’t serious.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Mirtle posts a great quote from Dallas Stars coach Marc Crawford after their loss to the Maple Leafs, “The positive thing is there are a billion people in China that don’t know that we played terrible tonight.”
- Calgary Flames forward Matt Stajan is crushed by NY Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Rule 48 stats: states: “A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted?” In my opinion it is a clean hit. I’m sure the league will review it.Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald notes what some people on twitter were saying, with most thinking it was clean.

- Toronto Sun: Martin Brodeur may be out the New Jersey Devils lineup for 2 weeks. After re-aggravating his bruised elbow on Thursday versus the Maple Leafs, doctors have told him to rest if for 10 days. An MRI was done on Friday and came back negative.
- George Richards via twitter: Stephen Weiss injured his ankle again and will miss Monday’s game versus the Penguins.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne rested yesterday and will miss today’s game as well with a sore groin. He has been bothered by it for 4 or 5 days, and re-aggravated it on Friday.
- Steven Harris of the Boston Globe: Marc Savard skated with the Bruin teammates yesterday. He hasn’t been cleared for contact yet, but this is a big step in his recovery from post concussion syndrome. Savard also commented on Colin Campbell’s emails,
“I have nothing against (Campbell). I think that stuff was private stuff and I think that stuff that he was saying (in the e-mails) got interpreted in a bad way,” Savard said. “It had nothing to do with the (Matt) Cooke incident. I played for (Campbell with the Rangers), and I think that was one of the ways when I first came in the league to stay in the lineup was to draw penalties. I think he encouraged it at the time, if you asked him. So I think that’s what he was referring to, but it had nothing to do with the Cooke situation.”
- Globe and Mail: Ryan Miller missed last night’s game with a sore groin.
