- Darren Dreger via twitter: The grievance hearing over the Predators qualifying offers starts tomorrow.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Answering a question on Drew Doughty: The Kings want to do over a 7 year deal, Doughty wants to do less. Bernstein says that Doughty wants to the highest paid LA King. (Anze Kopitar has a cap hit of $6.8 million)
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Josh Gorges’ agent hopes to get a deal done with the Canadiens before they go to salary arbitration. Arbitration hearings run from July 20th to August 4th. Last year only 4 of 19 players that filed for arbitration went to the hearing. Gorges earlier rejected a qualifying offer of $1.3 million. Money shouldn’t be issue, it’s the term that could be a problem.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Alexander Semin is being shopped around the league, he won’t end up in San Jose.
- Nick Cotsonika via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said that Joe Corvo suggested at trade, but didn’t demand one. Dan Rosen via twitter: Rutherford told Rosen that “the idea to sign Kaberle actually came about through a phone conversation with Joe Corvo’s agent.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle and Michael Sauer all filed for salary arbitration, but the Rangers hope to get all signed before their hearing dates.
It’s fair to project that bookend foundation pieces Callahan and Dubinsky will come in at somewhere between $3.7 million and $4.4 million per season. It’s safe to say Sauer, prime for an offer sheet that inexplicably did not materialize over the last four days, will be in at between $1.5 million and $2 million. Boyle is a tougher case, coming off his first productive year in the NHL, but he likely will come in between $1.25 million and $1.75 million.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: 5 free agents who might interest the Jets: Cory Stillman, Ryan Shannon, Jason Jaffray, Mike Grier, and John Madden.
- Scott Howson via twitter: After signing Radek Martinek, the Blue Jackets will “sit tight for now.” Will assess the market and talk to teams about trades.
- Fan 590 Audio: Don Meehan, the agent for Steven Stamkos and Clarke MacArthur.
- TSN Audio: Brian Burke press conference.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Brian Burke: “We haven’t written off Jeff Finger … If he can come in and take a job that’s great.”

Spezza’s groin injury … Souray to report to AHL today … Hodgson to AHL
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 8th, 2010
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza tweaked his groin in Wednesday’s practice, sat out yesterday, and it’s unsure if he’ll go in tonight’s opener. The Ottawa Senators also play tomorrow in Toronto and against the Capitals on Monday. The Senators won’t rush him back in fear of causing a longer term injury. Spezza didn’t talk to media but Clouston doesn’t seem that concerned about it. If Spezza is a no go, Ryan Shannon will step in.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Sheldon Souray is expected to report to the AHL’s Hersey Bears today. It’s unsure if he’ll play in any games this weekend as he hasn’t really had a training camp. Bears coach doesn’t know when Souray will suit up, they’ll have a better idea after he arrives. The Oilers may leave him in the minors all season, not putting him on re-entry waivers.I personally think this goes beyond the money/trade demand aspect. I believe it’s also about making a statement for players coming to Edmonton (and current Oilers) then deciding they don’t want to play there. Players publicly saying they are unhappy or asking for a trade, basically handcuffing the team (something they tried to take advantage of last year with Danny Heatly). It may also send a message to other players on other teams to be careful what you wish for, as the consequences may not end up in your favor.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Souray is costing the Edmonton Oilers $25,000 a day to with the Hershey Bears. Kypreos thinks he’ll be re-entry waivers within 2 weeks, possibly saving the team half his salary/cap if he’s claimed.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: After Cody Hodgson practiced with the Canucks yesterday, he was assigned to the Manitoba Moose and will be in the lineup for them tonight. Peter Schaefer received a 2 way deal from the Canucks, $600,000 NHL, $105,000 AHL. The Canucks could announce their new captain Saturday night.
- Michael Russo via twitter: James Sheppard’s agent confirms that his client has been suspended by the Minnesota Wild for his off-season injury. Sheppard is on non-roster IR, not being being paid, not on Wild cap, but they are helping him with rehab.
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: New York Rangers forward Tim Kennedy’s future is up in the air. He cleared waivers on Wednesday, but still remains with the club as an extra forward. When Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal return possibly later this month, his situation becomes even foggier.
Stars still looking to trade Ribeiro … Red Wings may still be looking at a couple moves … Could Redden remain with the Rangers?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 9th, 2010
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek thinks the Dallas Stars would still like to trade Mike Ribeiro, but they can’t get the deal they’d like. He thinks they are looking for a top-4 defenseman.
- Ansar Kahn of MLive: The Red Wings have looked at Lukas Krajicek as their 6th defenseman, and may be a better fit than Willie Mitchell, as he’d come at a more affordable price. Mitchell probably wants more money than the Wings have available, and may not be comfortable with being the 5th/6th defenseman and getting less ice time. Andreas Lilja may be a better option than Krajicek, but the Red Wings were offering $1 million, and he was seeking $1.5 million.
- Ansar Kahn of MLive: After the Mike Modano signing, the Red Wings have 15 forwards, so it will likely mean they will have to trade or waive someone. Mattias Ritola or Drew Miller will be the likely candidates to be moved. Khan thinks Miller will be moved. Ritola has a higher offensive upside, and is signed for 3 years, while Miller is on a one year deal.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have about $57.5 million (including Cheechoo and Emery buyouts) committed to 22 players. Their defensive corps currently consists of Sergei Gonchar, Chris Phillips, Filip Kuba, Erik Karlsson, Matt Carkner, Brian Lee and Chris Campoli, with youngster Jared Cowen and Patrick Weircioch waiting in the wings. Brian Lee could be moved. If they are looking to add some toughness to the back-end, Brendan Witt and Willie Mitchell could be options. The Senators may also look to add a top-6 forward through free agency (I didn’t realize there were any top-6 forwards available). If they add another forward, Ryan Shannon could be dealt or sent to the minors.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: With the additions of Alexander Frolov and Todd White, it appears the Rangers may not be planning on having Wade Redden’s salary counting against the cap, possibly waiving him during training camp. Though the Rangers defense may have some question marks that may lead the Rangers to keeping him. Marc Staal still isn’t under contract, Steve Eminger may too expensive for a 7th defenseman, Matt Gilroy may not be progressing as much as the Rangers had hoped, and what if Redden bounces back to his Senators days. The Norweigen Hobbit, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen, who was signed last spring, may find himself in the minors.
- Toronto Sun: Reports are the that Vesa Toskala will be heading to play in Sweden next season. Farjestad may be looking for a goalie since their current goalie, Robin Rahm, tested positive for a banned substance and may be a 2 year ban.
