- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Sidney Crosby will be holding a press conference tomorrow at 12:30 pm. James Mirtle via twitter: Crosby is not retiring, he wouldn’t do that as it would forfeit the end of his contract. Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie thinks Crosby will say that he’s progressing but not symptom free, and that there is no timeline for his return. Darren Dreger via twitter: Crosby has been skating. Doctors and GM Ray Shero will be at the press conference and it’s expected he’ll discuss his camp status.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Sources confirm that 4 groups submitted bids to buy the St. Louis Blues. Strickland adds that not all bids should be taken with the same seriousness.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Leafs GM Brian Burke says he’s still confident that they’ll get Luke Schenn re-signed before the start of training camp.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi is “progressing really well” and began skating solo recently.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Leafs coach Ron Wilson projects his top 3 lines as: Lupul-Connolly-Kessel. MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin. Kadri-Bozak-Armstrong. Kadri will be in competition with Frattin, Caputi, Colborne etc.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney is skating with teammates today which is a good sign for the foot surgery he’s recovering from.

- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Jay Feaster cited the Flames depth where it matters most as one of the reasons he sent center Daymond Langkow to the Coyotes for winger Lee Stempniak. The Flames are going to see if Mikael Backlund can center the top line with Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay. The Flames also have Brendan Morrison, Olli Jokinen and Matt Stajan down the middle. Langkow carries a $4.5 million cap hit this year, Stempniak carries a $1.9 million hit. Niklas Hagman’s time as a Flame could be running short and he may find himself making $3 million in the AHL.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Some think that 2011 1st round pick Sean Couturier could make the Flyers roster, which could create a logjam at center. Down the middle they have Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Blair Betts, Brayden Schenn and Ben Holmstrom. Michael Nylander is also heading to camp on a tryout.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank suggests that the Islanders could be looking for a veteran defenseman. Warren wonders if the Isles would be interested in Filip Kuba. The Isles are $2.3 million below the salary cap floor. Chris Campoli and Bryan McCabe are free agent defenseman still available.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney injured his surgically repaired right ankle skating earlier this month, but hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. “I rolled over on the foot … caught a rut in the ice. Minor sprain, I think,” said Whitney, “I’ll be back in Edmonton on Saturday. I don’t think it’s serious.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Pat Morris, the agent for former Oilers defenseman Steve Staios:
“He’s been training with all the young players at Matt Nichols’ camp in Toronto. I really think Steve could help a young team like the Islanders or Colorado (Avalanche). He played 23 of the last 27 games for Calgary last season, was an even-or plus-player in 18 of those games and had eight points.”
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning winger Ryan Malone had surgery in July to repair some damage from the shoulder separation he suffered in first round of the playoffs.
“It was just kind of nagging, so I went to get it looked at it and it was still kind of separated so we had to go get it fixed,” Malone said. “After the season there was still all the swelling so after everything went down, that’s when we found some other stuff that had to be taken care of.”
Initial reports were saying he would miss up to 6 months, but Malone said he expects to be ready for the season opener on Oct. 7th. Malone hasn’t been cleared for contact and likely won’t before the start of camp.
- Lindsay Applebaum of the Washington Post: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun wants to go out and enjoy playing hockey. He was disappointed with the offers he got in early July, including the 3 year offer from the Panthers.
“It was something I was looking at as, you know, I want to enjoy hockey. I want to play in playoffs,” Vokoun said Monday. “It’s been really tough for me. I lost four years. I’ve been sitting every summer here in South Florida, which I love, in the afternoons swimming in the pool, and by 7:30 at night I put on the TV and watch playoff hockey every single year. If you care and love playing hockey, it’s not an easy thing to do.”
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson, who had surgery last May, is back on the ice and is feeling stronger in the groin and hip area. He had abductor-tendon and sports hernia surgery, and began training in July.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “I don’t know about you, but if I had Drew Doughty on my team, I’d do everything to make sure he was signed, happy, and ready to lead my Los Angeles Kings team. The last thing I’d want is to drag my franchise player through the negotiating mud all summer with no contract agreed to with three weeks until training camp.”
- George Malik via twitter: According to Sport-Express, Metallurg of the KHL is trying to sign Jarkko Ruutu.

- Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and coach Dan Bylsma spoke recently with Sidney Crosby and “expressed cautious optimism” that their captain will be ready for training camp.
“I can’t wave a wand and tell you exactly how it’s going to play out,” Bylsma said. “He’s worked hard. He’s worked harder in some areas than he has in the past. I know he’s active.”
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Patrick Kane said the recovery process is going well. He could miss the beginning of training but will be 100% for the season opener. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kane still has a cast on from his offseason wrist surgery, and hasn’t skated in full gear yet. Targets Oct. 7th opener.
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney is still feeling the effects from his surgically repaired foot and ankle.
“My reports suggest that,” Renney said. “My converstations with Ryan himself maybe suggest otherwise, but only to a small degree. There is some trepidation there that it’s still a little tender. He’s got a little bit of pain there. But from what I can gather, and even in talking to Ryan, it’s more of a function of scar tissue breaking down, which is actually healthy, and makes the joint healthier, so that’s the kind of thing you get in July and August when you don’t see the whites of their eyes.”
- The Fourth Period: So with the Sabres needing to shed some money, and the Coyotes needing a center, the 2 teams could come together. Brad Boyes at $4 million has the ability to play center. Jochen Hecht and his $3.5 million contract could also be available, but is not as attractive as others.
- Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: Islanders GM Garth Snow yesterday:
“Right now, I don’t have any plans to add another forward to our group,” Snow told The Post. “As much as we’d like to add quality veterans, we’re not going to box out our young guys.”
This statement will likely have the most affect on Alexei Yashin, as the 2 sides have linked together this summer.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: 5 teams are showing interest in Chris Campoli.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Former Devil Sergei Brylin was interested in returning to the club, but they weren’t interested in him. He signed with Novokuznetsk of the KHL.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins forward Craig Adams had appendectomy surgery last week and is expected to ready for the start of training camp.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Slava Fetisov recently said that agents are able to buy spots on the Russian national team for their clients.

- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: It looks like Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts could miss some time as the team recalled Chris Tanev from Manitoba.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks 4th line center Alec Bolduc will have an MRI done later this week to determine the extend of his injury, but he’s expected to miss a month. His shoulder popped out on a face-off on Friday, this is his 3rd separation in the last 2 years. They’ll need to recall a forward this week, maybe Sergei Shirokov, Viktor Oreskovich, or possibly Cody Hodgson. If they look at a trade to replace him, Islanders center Zenon Konopka could be of interest.
- Mike Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: JS Giguere has a no-trade clause but has made it known that he could be open to waiving it. Tomas Kaberle, François Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek also have no-trade clauses but haven’t said publicly if they’d be open to waiving it. Trade talks in past weeks have involved Kris Versteeg, Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski. Trading Versteeg for prospects seems odd since they gave up prospects to get before the season. MacArthur and Grabovski have been a couple of their best players this year. Kaberle for Blake Wheeler continues to float out there, though the Bruins have 7 Dman locked up for next year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Jarrko Ruutu knows his days in Ottawa are likely numbered. The Kings, Sharks and Penguins could possibly be interested in him.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Penguins should trade Evgeni Malkin and move Jordan Staal up to the #2 center, and proposes a Malkin-Rick Nash trade, though admits will likely never happen. Matheson wonders if the Sharks have considered Sheldon Souray. Flyers are looking for right winger who’ll be a UFA at season end, currently have about $1.9 million in cap room. Some think the Stars will dangle James Neal for an offensive defenseman.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney will be heading to N.C. to see his foot specialist (will be his 3rd procedure there) to repair a dislocated tendon in his right ankle. A time frame may be better known today when it gets examined, but “All we know is it’s going to be a good amount of time,” Tambellini said. “He’s dealt with this surgeon before, so he’s very comfortable with him.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Derek Boogaard could be done for the season after suffering a concussion in a fight with Matt Carkner. Don’t look for a Mike Commodore-Brian Rolston deal, Rolston makes too much money for the Blue Jackets. Best Bets for Senators defenseman Chris Phillips are the Capitals and Sharks. If Patrick Eaves keeps up his scoring, Jiri Hudler could find himself an odd man out, would someone take his $2.8 million contract?
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames turned down the idea of starting next season in Europe, “We need to focus on what’s important and get ourselves back on track,” said team president and CEO Ken King. Sharks GM Doug Wilson is kicking tires, but “the marketplace is a tough one” as many teams are looking for centers and defenseman. Ilya Bryzgalov’s agent, Don Meehan, is heading to Phoenix today to discuss contract extension with the Coyotes. “We’ve been told that signing Ilya is a priority,” said Meehan.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The San Jose Sharks continue to look for defenseman, and they might be interested in Chris Phillips. They could also be interested in Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle. Though Florida is in contract extension talks with Tomas Vokoun, the Sharks might come calling. Brad Richards isn’t going anywhere for now. Players being shopped by the NJ Devils include Jason Arnott, Dainius Zubrus, and Colin White. If the Devils can’t get a deal done with RFA Zach Parise, he could get an offer sheet by someone after July 1st. The Capitals may be interested in Arnott. The Blue Jackets may still be interested in Sheldon Souray. Kevin Bieksa likely won’t be moved by the Canucks, but they could look to move Mikael Samuelsson and his $2.5 million salary.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Andrei Markov hopes that he’s able to re-sign with the Canadiens. Markov is in the final year of 4 year, $23 million deal. There haven’t been any talks yet but Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, isn’t concerned.
- Mike Berardino of the Sun-Sentinel: The Florida Panthers have some pieces that may intrigue other teams. Tomas Vokoun in net, tough guy Darcy Hordichuk, defenseman Bryan McCabe, and forwards Marty Reasoner, Cory Stillman, Radek Dvorak, and Chris Higgins. If anyone wants Rostislav Olesz, he could be had ($11 million for 3 more years).
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Kyle Wellwood could be practicing with the St. Louis Blues on Monday. Confirmation of his KHL buyout should be received soon, and he would be put on waivers shortly after. If he clears, and everything goes as planned, he could be in the lineup on Tuesday. Carlo Colaiacovo took a puck in the face, but isn’t expected to miss much time.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets will find out on Monday at noon if anyone claims Mike Commodore on re-entry waivers.
- Terry Jones via twitter: HNIC was saying that Ryan Whitney will have to undergo surgery and has been chosen for jury duty. Jim Matheson via twitter: It’s news to Oilers coach Tom Renney that Whitney needs ankle surgery.

- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres will get Tim Connolly back tomorrow night after missing 4 games with a fractured nose. Tyler Myers has missed the last couple games with an illness should be back as well. Patrick Kaleta suffered an upper body injury on Tuesday and is likely out tomorrow.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Erik Christensen will be out of the Rangers lineup for 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney is wearing a walking cast. When the swelling goes down he’ll be heading to see a specialist, which might not be for another couple of weeks. The best case scenario could see him only missing a month but it will likely be longer than that.
- Katie Strang of Newsday: Kyle Okposo has been skating in full gear recently but won’t join the NY Islanders on their upcoming 11 day road trip.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Vancouver Canucks have put Ryan Parent on waivers. Boston’s Wyatt Smith cleared waivers.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Atlanta Thrashers are looking to move Niclas Bergfors as coach Craig Ramsey doesn’t seem to think that Bergfors fits into the teams style of play. They have several offers for him and his $900,000 contract. Allen thinks they are probably trying to get a better pick or prospect, and might be looking to get a 2nd round pick or an advanced prospect for him. They aren’t looking for a roster player for him.
- Stamkos was one of the Tampa players who complained about Linus Omark’s hot dogging spin-o-rama, but he pulled a nice one last night ….

“There’s no plan to trade Jarome,” “There’s no desire on my part to trade Jarome.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Trevor Daley to a 6 year, $19.8 million contract extension. The 27 year old will carry a $3.3 million salary cap hit. GM Joe Nieuwendyk got the blessings from the lenders to make this deal, and received the okay from them to open negotiations with Brad Richards.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Kyle Cuminsky, out the past 25 games with a concussion, is nearing a return to the Colorado Avalanche lineup. He traveled with the team, but won’t play in the team’s 2 Alberta games. Chris Stewart, recovering from his broken hand, is skating but they don’t know when he’ll return to the lineup.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs have shipped Nazem Kadri back to the AHL Marlies. Kadri recorded 6 assists in 17 games. From Ron Wilson,
“He still needs to get stronger. (And) there are aspects of the game he still is struggling with at the NHL level. Strength. Little areas like faceoffs. Being quick. Avoiding turnovers.
“He knows the things he has to work on. Now he’s got to practise them, work on them, and execute them in games.”
- The Globe and Mail: Sami Salo is back practicing with the Vancouver Canucks. Salo has been skating on his own for the past 2 weeks and is getting “close” to returning.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney may be lost for an indefinite period of time with an ankle injury, the team is not counting on having him back any time soon.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Wild have lost Marek Zidlicky for “awhile” with a shoulder injury.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Nashville Predators claimed Marek Svatos after the St. Louis Blues tried to sign him to a 1 year, $800,000 ($105,000 AHL) deal.

- Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas: Sources told Pierre LeBrun yesterday that Calgary Oil man Bill Gallacher has pulled out of buying the Dallas Stars. In the past few months, it was rumored that he was close to a deal with current Stars owner Tom Hicks. Canadian businessman Tom Gaglardi still remains interested, and other groups may get back into it. The team is operating on a low internal budget which is limited what the team could do in terms of free agents and trades.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Matt Stajan separated his shoulder during the first period of Tuesday night’s game versus the Canucks, and will be out indefinitely. The Flames are already without Daymond Langkow who has a fractured vertebrae at the base of his neck. Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Stajan’s injury opens the door for Mikael Backlund to step up into the 2nd line roll. Backlund collected 10 points in 23 games last season, and welcomes the opportunity. Stajan could be out for a month if they’re lucky.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby sat out the 3rd period of last night’s game with a sore hip flexor. Crosby ‘tweaked’ it a bit, but doesn’t see it as a long term problem.
- George Sipple and Kirkland Crawford of the Detroit Free Press: Johan Franzen suffered a charley horse after being kneed by Brooks Orpik. Derek Meech also left the game with head injury.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Right now there doesn’t seem to be any urgency for the Vancouver Canucks to trade Kevin Bieksa. The Canucks did have 3 scouts watching the Columbus Blue Jackets in Traverse City, where the Jackets prospects were playing.
- Doug MacLean via twitter: Minnesota Wild owner said yesterday they lost money last year, joining the Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks. The Washington Capitals got revenue sharing.
- Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic: Martin Hanzal and Vern Fiddler will be the Coyotes top 2 centerman, with the other 2 spots up for grabs. Eric Belanger, Kyle Turris, Kyle Wellwood, and Wojtek Wolski are vying for the spots. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: If either Kyle Turris or Kyle Wellwood make the Coyotes, Wojtek Wolski would likely shift back to the wing, he’s been playing center at camp.
- Jason Botchford via twitter: Vancouver Canucks prospect Cody Hodgson had no pain/symptoms after first full contact practice.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks the Edmonton Oilers captaincy is down to Ryan Whitney and Shawn Horcoff, if the team goes with one this year.
- Curtis Zupke via twitter: Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said that if Matt Beleskey continues to get the puck to Cory Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, he might have a spot on that line.

- Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic: Matt Hulsizer put $25 million in escrow on Friday to show that he has the capital to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes. There is plenty of negotiations that have to take place with the NHL and the city. A Canadian media outlet said the team as only sold 4,000 season tickets. Gary Bettman had this to say when he was in Ottawa announcing they’ll get the 2012 All-Star game (before Hulsizer put the money in escrow),
“We’ve been at this now for a year and a half.”
“At some point, it may be in Phoenix that we won’t be successful . . . ”
“We hope it should get done (in Phoenix). I believe Phoenix can support an NHL team, but there are a lot of moving pieces we’re dealing with.”
- Burce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It took only 15 in to the 2nd session on day 1 for the Senators to potentially have their fir
- st injury of the season. Filip Kuba hit a rut in the ice, and suffered an injury. He went for x-rays yesterdays, and if it’s broken, he could be out 6-8 weeks.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Bobby Ryan will be at center until he fails according to Randy Carlyle, “We think it’s a position that suits him and makes him more effective.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Ryan Whitney isn’t a 100% after having surgery on his feet to correct his high arches.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Nazam Kadri was on a line with Kris Versteeg and Colby Armstrong yesterday.
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Only once have the Columbus Blue Jackets drawn less than 10,000 for a game, but that number is going to increase a lot this year. The team has only sold 7,700 season tickets for this season. “Worried is not the right word,” Priest said. “I know what kind of crowds we are going to see early in the season. … We will have some weekday crowds of 8,500, potentially.” Ken Hitchcock will be a special adviser for the team.
