  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will start the season with the Oilers. RNH was skating with Ales Hemskyand Taylor Hall.

“Ryan will start the season with us,” said Renney. “We all understand the parameters there that he can operate within before we have to make a real concrete decision. Again, we’ll do it a game at a time, but he has had a very good camp.”

When Sam Gagne returns from injury, Anton Lander could be sent to the AHL. Lennart Petrell could be the casualty when Ben Eager returns from a concussion.

  • Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins have their roster set at 23 players. They sent Alexandre Picard, Brian Strait and Jason Williams to the AHL, Joe Morrow to back junior, and put Sidney Crosby (concussion), Dustin Jeffrey (knee), Nick Petersen (concussion), Robert Bortuzzo (knee) and Boris Valabik (knee) on the IR. Defenseman Brooks Orpik could be close to returning.

  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks assigned Justin Braun, Benn Ferriero and John McCarthy to Worcester of the AHL. Goalie Antti Niemi is looking like he’ll be able to go for the season opener. The Sharks still have 28 players on their camp roster, Antero Niittymaki and James Sheppard will be put the IR, leaving 3 moves that will have to be made.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Matt Ducheneis entering the final year of his entry level deal, and is likely to get a nice raise.

“If I take care of business, that’s a reward. That’s not something that you aim for. It’s not a destination. It’s a byproduct,” he said matter of factly.

Duchene has 1 more point in his short career than Islanders John Tavares, who recently signed a 6 year, $33 million deal. Duchene agent, Pat Brisson (Tavares’ agent as well), hasn’t talked extension with the Avalanche yet.

Leiweke talks Doughty … Homophobic slur towards Avery, who could be sent to the AHL … Yashin signs with CSKA … Sabres get cap space

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The president of the Kings’ parent company AEG, Tim Leiweke, supports Kings GM Dean Lombardi’s stance with Drew Doughty. Leiweke said the Kings plan to spend to the cap but paying Doughty $7+ million would change the allocation of their budget and would have long-term implications.

“The difference of opinion here is that Drew may see this as disrespect, and it’s not at all. We have offered to make him the fourth-highest-paid defenseman in the NHL and equal the highest-paid King in our history. When I look at that, I think there either has to be a miscommunication or Drew’s a 21-year-old and probably hasn’t done what he may need to do here, which is stand up and take charge of the decision.”

“More importantly, tell me which player we’re now starting to carve this $300,000 or $400,000 out of. We’re carving it out of someone’s salary next year and it’s no secret we’ve got some restricted and unrestricted free agents that we have to deal with in the next two years. So who is it on this team we go look at and say, ‘We just gave Drew your extra money, because $6.8 [million] wasn’t good enough’? That’s not good for team chemistry.

“I support Dean on what he’s trying to do here. He’s not trying to be cheap. He’s not trying to be disrespectful. We love Drew. It’s an allocation issue here and everyone, including most of the players I’ve run into in the last week, they get that we are desperate to try to keep enough resources to keep this team together long term.”

    Leiweke added,

“Let’s not destroy this relationship or his reputation or our reputation over something like this. We need to get this done. He needs to get back in here.

  • CP in the Globe and Mail: NY Rangers forward Sean Avery told ESPN that Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds made a homophobic slur at him during Monday night’s game. Simmonds didn’t deny making the remark:

“We were going back-and-forth for the rest of the game and emotions ran high,” he said. “I don’t recall every single thing that I did say to him. He said some things to me that I didn’t like, and I guess I said some things that he didn’t like.”

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Ales Kotalik and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn cleared waivers yesterday and were assigned to Rochester of the AHL. It will save the team a $5.075 million cap space this season. The Sabres were unsuccessful in their attempt to trade the two. They are currently about $930,000 below the cap. 14 other players were sent to Rochester: forwards Zack Kassian, Marcus Foligno, Corey Tropp Jonathan Parker, Michael Ryan, Colin Stuart, Phil Varone and Derek Whitmore; defensemen T.J. Brennan, Brayden McNabb Dennis Persson, Joe Finley and Drew Schiestel. and goaltender Drew MacIntyre.
  • Chris Botta of the NY Times: If Sean Avery doesn’t impress Rangers management, he could find himself on waivers and sent to the AHL.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs still have 9 defenseman in camp, battling for the 6 starting positions. In camp remain: Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie (on a two-way), Luke Schenn, John-Michael Liles, Cody Franson, Mike Komisarek, Carl Gunnarsson (could be on the bubble), Jake Gardiner (can also be sent to minors without going on waivers), and Matt Lashoff (long shot).
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Yesterday at practice the the Blackhawks tried Patrick Kane at center between Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. “I don’t know, (we’ll) try it for a couple of games and see how it goes. It’s preseason, so why not? I’m willing to try it out, I guess. I’m going to try to do my best there and see what happens.” Kane said.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said that forward Jan Mursak has a broken left ankle and will be out around 3 months. There are several non-displaced fractures and some stretched ligaments. Fabian Brunnstrom or Ryan Johnson could benefit from the injury.
  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators will trim their camp roster to 25-27 players. Likely to be sent to the AHL are “goalies Mike McKenna, Brian Stewart, and Robin Lehner; defencemen Tim Conboy, Bob Raymond, Josh Godfrey, Craig Schira, Patrick Wiercioch, Mark Borowiecki, and Eric Gryba; and forwards Mike Hoffman, David Dziurzynski, Derek Grant, Corey Cowick, Corey Locke, Mark Parrish, Darren Kramer, Jim O’Brien, Patrick Cannone, Francis Lessard, Wacey Hamilton, Jack Downing, Maxime Gratchev, Louie Caporusso, and possibly Andre Petersson.”

Rangers may not be able to buyout Drury now … Vokoun likes the Avs? Oilers trying to move up in 1st round … Bryzgalov meets with Flyers

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury has a degenerative condition in his left knee that won’t allow him to play next year. The NY Rangers were planning on buying him out but due to the condition they won’t be able to. Drury’s $7.05 million will count against the summer cap in which a team can’t exceed next year’s cap by more than 10%. If they were able to buy him out, it would have carried about $3.717 million of dead space this summer. Once the season starts they can put him on LTIR. It’s likely that Drury’s career is over.
  • Peter Adler of the Edmonton Journal: Tomas Vokoun told a Czech newspaper that he’s not thinking about taking the offer from Avangard Omsk of the KHL as he wants to remain in the NHL. The paper is saying that Vokoun has heard from the Flyers and from the Coyotes.

“I would not be displeased if I got a good offer from Floria and accepted it,” the paper quotes Vokoun as saying. “But if I happen to get an offer from a team that might have a chance to challenge for the Stanley Cup, now, that might be irresistible.”

When asked which team, Vokoun said “Like Colorado.”

  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater talked with Avs GM Greg Sherman several days ago, and he didn’t seemed worried about their goaltending situation. It seemed to Dater that he already knew what will happen regarding the goalie.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are trying hard to move from #19 in the NHL draft (pick acquired in the Dustin Penner trade) in to the top 10. They may not necessarily draft a forward and defenseman in the draft as next year there could be 15 dman worthy of a 1st round pick. There are lots of trade scenarios for the Oilers, most revolve around Ales Hemsky. Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi, Shawn Horcoff, and Ryan Whitney are pretty much untouchables. Prospects Anton Lander, Jeff Petry and Teemu Hartikainen may not be available either, everyone else could be available. Matheson offers some trade scenarios that are 99% certain not to happen. Hemsky, a prospect, the 19th and 31st pick to Colorado for the 2nd overall pick. Hemsky, the 19th and 31st, plus a 2012 2nd round pick to New Jersey for the 4th pick (suggested by someone else). Eberle, Sam Gagner and the 31st pick for the 5th overall pick, Kyle Okposo and Travis Hamonic. Columbus seems like an obvious trade partner, but it may be unlikely that they are interested in a player like Hemsky who would be a free agent after next year and has had shoulder issues. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson,

“We’ve had a little bit of interest in it so far and we’re willing to listen. Given where our franchise is now, we’d be more open to moving it for immediate help. We would be looking for a centre or a defenceman because we’re pretty strong on the wing with R.J. Umberger, (Rick) Nash, (Kristian) Huselius and (Jake) Voracek,”

If the Oilers don’t deal Hemsky, they’ll need to figure out if they want to re-sign him and committ around $5 million per season when they have the likes of Hall, Eberle, and Paajarvi who be looking for more money in a couple years. Would Winnipeg at #7 be interested? Could they look to move Sam Gagner?

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers and Ilya Bryzgalov have begun negotiations. Bryzgalov met with a variety of organizational members yesterday. If his demands aren’t crazy, they should be able to get a deal. Carchidi thinks a 5 year deal at $5.5 million could be a good number. They don’t want to move Jeff Carter to clear cap space, but may consider if the received a big offer. It would have to be move than the 8th overall pick and Jakub Voracek rumored deal.  If they can’t get a deal with Bryzgalov done, Evgeni Nabokov could be an option.

Oilers re-sign Sam Gagne … Lee Stempniak re-signs with Coyotes

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Sam Gagner re-signed with the Edmonton Oilers yesterday. The deal is for 2 years and $4.55 million, a cap hit of $2.275 million.

Gagne was drafted 6th overall in 2007, and has recorded 131 points in 223 games. Gagne is coming off a 41 point season, were he scored 15 goals and added 26 assists in 68 games. In his rookie season he produced his highest point total with 49, while missing only 3 games.

  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Lee Stempniak has re-signed with Phoenix Coyotes. It’s a 2 year deal worth $3.5 million, a $1.75 million cap hit. Stempniak turned his game around after being acquired from the Maple Leafs, scoring 14 goals in 18 games. His game tailed off in the playoffs where he recorded only 2 assists in 7 games. In 62 games with the Leafs last year,  he scored 14 goals with 16 assists in 62 games.

Will offer sheets start to come? Rumors surrounding Kovalchuk

  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: With the lack of depth in the NHL Free Agent market, teams may send out an offer sheets to improve their club. Some possible restricted free agents are Bobby Ryan, Marc Staal, Steve Downie, Sam Gagne, and David Perron. The Boston Bruins are now able to negotiate contract extensions for Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron, both are entering the last year of their contract. Chara is making $7.5 million and would probably be looking for something similar. The Bruins could offer him a front loaded deal to bring down the cap number. Bergeron has a cap number of $4.7 million, and probably would get a deal with a similar number.
  • Helene Elliot of the LA Times: The LA Kings could still use a productive winger, and an experienced top 4 defenseman, but with not much remaining in the free agent group, the Kings could turn to trades or possibly an offer sheet.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello continues to pursue Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk would probably reject any offer below $8 million, and Kings may not have wanted to go over that number. The Devils may not want to go over $8 million as well. The Isles could be offering $10 million for 10 years.
  • Tom Gulitti of NorthJersey.com: A report out of Russia said that the Flyers offered Kovalchuk a deal, his Russian agent denied the report that he said that.
  • Larry Brooks via Twitter: “Kings rule out Kovalchuk. In other news, Yanks refuse to sign A-Rod after he opts out. Oh. Wait.”
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins are thinking about shifting Jordan Staal or Evgeni Malkin over to the wing. The Pens would then need to add a 3rd line center. Potential candidates could be: Rob Niedermayer, Dominic Moore, Jeff Halpern, John Madden, and Ryan Johnson.

Oilers Want Leafs Pick … Would Calgary trade Jarome? More on Philly’s Goaltending Options … Caps Wanted Kaberle?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Edmonton Oilers reportedly offered the Boston Bruins, Dustin Penner and Tom Gilbert for the 1st round pick that belonged to the Maple Leafs. The Oilers may try again at Draft time with Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner or Andrew Cogliano.
  • Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail: Would the Calgary Flames consider asking Jarome Iginla to waive his no-trade clause? Iginla is 33, and Power Forward bodies begin to breakdown faster. Iginla is still effective, but how long can he keep his robust style up. He could fetch a good return, but he is the face of the Flames. “Iginla could end up being the Flames’ Mats Sundin,” an NHL source said. “He wants to stay. He wants to be part of the solution. But what if he has to be traded to make the team better? That’s the question Calgary is left with.”
  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: What would it take for the Flyers to trade for Carey Price? If the price for Price isn’t too high, could make sense. They can also look to the free agent route; Marty Turco, Evgeni Nabokov, Jose Theodore, Vesa Toskala, and Chris Mason. They could also look at re-signing Michael Leighton. 28 year old Johan Backlund (21-17-2) was played well for Adirondack but would have to be re-signed. Finnish free agent Jussi Rynnas may also be worth the risk if the price is right.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Nikita Filatov’s KHL season is over, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be heading back to Columbus to finish their season. There is a chance his days in Columbus are over for good. Unhappy with being a healthy scratch for 6 games, and seeing limited action in 13 games at the beginning of the season, Filatov basically walked out on the team. Some feel he would have a negative impact in the dressing room if they brought him back this year or next. Portzline thinks the Blue Jackets will trade him at the draft for a proven, reliable player.
  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: It was rumored at the NHL trade deadline that Washington offered Tomas Fleischmann, Karl Alzner and a pick for Tomas Kaberle.

Around the Boards: Phil Kessel, Sam Gagne, Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Elias Updates, Wisniewski Suspended

    • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Phil Kessel is expected to receive clearance from doctors this morning to make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kessel has been skating with Jason Blake and Matt Stajan. The problem I see with this line is that both Blake and Kessel like to shoot the puck a lot. It will be interesting to see how Stajan handles both shooters.
    • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sam Gagne will be out of the Flyers lineup for 6-8 weeks after his hernia and abdominal surgery today. Though he definitely will be missed, it creates an opportunity for some of the Flyers younger kids to step up. Also, Daniel Briere hope to practice tomorrow, with the goal of playing on Friday.
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alexander Ovechkin is listed as wee-to-week with an upper body strain. Brooks Laich take Ovechkin’s spot on the line with Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison.
    • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Jonathan Toews is still not allowed to skate, no timetable on his return has been set. There’s a chance that Marian Hossa returns before November 25th.
    • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Struggling Canadiens winger Andrei Kostitsyn has been demoted to 4th line. Kostitsyn has only 1 goal and 3 assists in 14 games, and received only 7:32 minutes of ice time on Saturday.
    • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski was suspended for 2 games for his elbow on Shane Doan.
    • Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger: Patrick Elias for the first time this season with the Devils and is eying a weekend return the lineup. He’ll give the Devils a much needed offensive jolt.
    • Brian Mullen of the Nashville Tennessean: Shea Weber will be out the Nashville Predators lineup for 1 to 2 weeks.
    • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Matt Pettinger signed on for his second stint with the Vancouver Canucks after inking a 1 year, 2-way, $500k contract.
