Yzerman won’t trade top draft picks … Canucks Dman update … Salary dump in Ottawa … Semin out 2 games

  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: As the trade deadline approaches, don’t expect Lightning GM Steve Yzerman to include any 1st to 3rd round 2011 or 2012 draft picks to in bring some additional help. Yzerman added “I don’t want to hold myself up to say we’re not going to do anything. But I think it would be very difficult to add without giving something up of great value I wouldn’t want to give up.”
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Though he’s back practicing, there is no guarantee that Sami Salo will play again this year. Canucks GM Gillis told the Sun, “I think people are really jumping the gun,” “For some reason, people want to discount the type of injury he had. He suffered a 95% rupture of his Achilles tendon. There are people who never walk after something like that. We don’t know if he’s going to play. He’s three practices in and it’s going OK, but it’s still a long ways off.” Gillis also said he won’t talk about contract extensions for Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff until the season is over.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: 2 sources have told the Sun that the Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to dump salary. Trade candidates could be Chris Phillips, Filip Kuba, Alex Kovalev, Peter Regin, and Milan Michalek.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun: Senators winger Alex Kovalev will miss at least a week with his ongoing knee injury. Mike Fisher is expected to be able to go against the Bruins, he blocked a shot with his knee over the weekend.
  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: Canucks center Ryan Kesler has an injured thumb, but is expecting to play tomorrow.

Richards to remain a Star for now … Senators hotseats … Eberle out 10 days … Osgood to retire? Turris, Moreau injured

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News:  “Barring a total collapse, don’t expect Stars to trade Brad Richards.” Heika guesses the Stars will hold onto Richards, and if they can’t re-sign him by the start of free agency, they could move him for a pick or prospect July 1st.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: While there hasn’t been any official word yet, Russo is hearing it could be the most severe type of shoulder separation for Marek Zidlicky.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Ethan Moreau suffered a rib injury that might keep him out for the remainder of the Blue Jackets road trip.
  • Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators coach Cory Clouston and GM Bryan Murray are in the final year of their contracts, and their future position with the club could be in limbo. There seems to be “disconnect” between Clouston and the team leaders, and he’s head individual meetings. Canadian World Junior coach Dave Cameron could be a candidate as the next Senators head coach, he did coach their farm team for 3 seasons.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The question is still out there as to when Sami Salo will return to the Canucks, but Salo “admitted he is still not convinced he will play again. Ever.” Salo is skating and will likely be back in a month, but will he be able to compete at a high level.

“We’ve had discussions,” Salo said. “Both sides have to be really honest with each other. I’ve said all along I’m not going to risk the rest of my career, my life, with having a disability. I have to be really careful.

“The business is the business. But, like I said, I have to be at the level where I feel I need to be. For sure, they’re going to ask me where I’m at, and there’s no point in moving somebody [in a trade] if I’m not 100 per cent. There’s no point coming back and then finding out you’re not good enough to play. I’ve got to make sure I’m really at the top level when I come back.”

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Petr Prucha cleared waivers. “Multiple teams” have inquired about him, the Blues not being one of them. Prucha has good speed and is only 28.

Stars-Richards talking extension … Canucks need to clear $1.8 million for a Salo return … DiPietro hurt again … Reimer Staying? Trades in future for Kings?

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told Strickland that he’s focused on getting Brad Richards re-signed. They are concentrating on getting an extension done and not looking to trade him. Both sides have started talking, and ownership situation won’t get in the way of negotiations.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: It looks like the Canucks will have to clear about $1.8 million when Sami Salo is ready to return. Though it’s unlikely the Canucks would waive both Aaron Rome and Andrew Alberts, their combined cap hit is $1.8 million. The Canucks could make a trade before Salo comes back, but GM Mike Gillis has said recently he’s not a fan of trading players.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Despite having many no-trade clauses and high salaried players, Lou Lamoriello is still trying to be a seller. Jamie Langenbrunner has a no-trade, but could be on the move.
  • Katie Strang via twitter: Rick DiPietro left last night’s game and will re-evaluate today, he had this to say after the game, “It was a little tweak and I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
  • Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Predators center Cal O’Reilly broke his right fibula on Sunday. O’Reilly was 3rd on team scoring with 18 points (yikes!). Preds centers have missed a total of 60 games this season, Matthew Lombardi (concussion), David Legwand (lower body injury) and Marcel Goc (shoulder) have all missed time.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: With Murray’s comments about Jarret Stoll’s line and Marco Sturm hitting the wall, GM Dean Lombardi may have to overpay to bring in some scoring help.
  • Jonas Siegel via twitter: The Maple Leafs may not send James Reimer back to the AHL when JS Giguere returns from injury implied coach Ron Wilson.

Parise not wanting to stay in New Jersey pure speculation … Smith odd may out in TB … Should Canucks move Ballard instead of Bieksa?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Dupont writes that Zach Parise “has no aspirations to remain in New Jersey” and that if Lamoriello looks to trade him, he might look for “three first-round picks, a roster player, and a prospect”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Gulitti talked to Parise about the above comments,

“I don’t know where they get that info.”

“Who is talking, I have no idea. I’ve never told anyone one way or another. It’s all speculation.”

When asked about re-signing with the Devils,

“Of course, you play in a place and you get drafted by them and you play there your whole career and you’d love to play in one spot for your whole career,” he said. “So, we’ll see what happens, I guess. I do like playing here and I like living here and everything. We’ll see how all that stuff turns out, but ideally you’d like to stay.”

No talks have taken place yet.

  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: The Lightning felt trading for Dwayne Roloson was safer than signing Evgeni Nabokov. The Lightning currently have 3 goalies in Roloson, Dan Ellis and Mike Smith. Once Smith recovers from his knee injury, he could be likely candidate to be traded has he’s in the last year of his deal.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Rumors continue that Kevin Bieksa will be traded once Sami Salo returns, but Matheson wonders if the Canucks should be shopping Keith Ballard instead. Ballard is making $4 million a year on the 3rd pairing and Bieksa is having a good year.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Mike Commodore has been a healthy scratch for the Blue Jackets for 6 of the last 7 games. He’s their highest paid defenseman, and has only played in 20 of the teams 39 games this season.

  • Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: New Calgary Flames GM, Jay Feaster,

“There’s no plan to trade Jarome,”  “There’s no desire on my part to trade Jarome.”

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Trevor Daley to a 6 year, $19.8 million contract extension. The 27 year old will carry a $3.3 million salary cap hit. GM Joe Nieuwendyk got the blessings from the lenders to make this deal, and received the okay from them to open negotiations with Brad Richards.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Kyle Cuminsky, out the past 25 games with a concussion, is nearing a return to the Colorado Avalanche lineup. He traveled with the team, but won’t play in the team’s 2 Alberta games. Chris Stewart, recovering from his broken hand, is skating but they don’t know when he’ll return to the lineup.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs have shipped Nazem Kadri back to the AHL Marlies. Kadri recorded 6 assists in 17 games. From Ron Wilson,

“He still needs to get stronger. (And) there are aspects of the game he still is struggling with at the NHL level. Strength. Little areas like faceoffs. Being quick. Avoiding turnovers.

“He knows the things he has to work on. Now he’s got to practise them, work on them, and execute them in games.”

  • The Globe and Mail: Sami Salo is back practicing with the Vancouver Canucks. Salo has been skating on his own for the past 2 weeks and is getting “close” to returning.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney may be lost for an indefinite period of time with an ankle injury, the team is not counting on having him back any time soon.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Nashville Predators claimed Marek Svatos after the St. Louis Blues tried to sign him to a 1 year, $800,000 ($105,000 AHL) deal.

Burke talks music and Leafs (audio) … Leafs trade assets … Would Devils trade Brodeur? Staal skates … DiPietro to IR … Video of Cooke hit on Yandle

  • Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke was on the morning show yesterday morning talking about music and the Maple Leafs.
  • 98.5 The Sports Hub Audio: Bruins President Cam Neely joined Felger and Mazz to break down the team’s recent slump. Is Neely happy with the job head coach Claude Julien is doing? Will any moves be made? Neely gives us the answers.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks the Maple Leafs have some trade assets that could help the future. Names that might come up at the trade deadline or before are Francois Beauchemin, Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Tomas Kaberle.
  • Scott Burnside of ESPN: The New Jersey Devils season is all but over, 18 points out with no signs of things turning around. Could they look at trading Martin Brodeur to a contender? He has another year left at $5.2 million. Would the Washington Capitals or Tampa Bay Lightning be interested? The LA Kings may look into adding another defenseman before the trade deadline, as Willie Mitchell’s has been unable to remain healthy. He’s played only 15 games and is week-to-week with a knee injury.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Vancouver might trade Kevin Bieksa when Sami Salo returns (it’s still not known exactly when he’ll return). Rick Rypien, who left the Canucks for personal reasons, isn’t expected to be back with the team this season, and it’s possible that he may never return. Former NHLer, current AHLer, Jonathan Cheechoo has a bruised kidney and some internal bleeding. The Islanders may look to trade winger Matt Moulson if he wants more money than they want to give him. The Isles may offer Doug Weight one more kick at the can and send him to a contender if he wants too.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Jordan Staal skated for 30 minutes yesterday with their strength and conditioning coach. He didn’t wear a glove over his surgically repaired hand, nor did he do any stick handling drills. It’s been 50 days since the surgery.
  • Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Even though the NY Islanders 3rd sting goal, Nathan Lawson, got the start of Dwayne Roloson, a trade of Roloson is not imminent. Botta thinks the Isles would ask for a 2nd round pick for Roloson if they decide to trade him.
  • The Globe and Mail: The New York Islanders have put Rick DiPietro and defenceman Mike Mottau on injured reserve. DiPietro will be eligible to return in 7 days. Mottau will have surgery on his hip and will be out the remainder of the season.
  • Mike Vogel via twitter: Washington Capitals winger Matt Bradley has a broken finger and will miss 2-4 weeks.
  • Yesterday @jimbalsillie tweeted “Hi again, social friends! Very early morning. Nashville bound today! And not to learn how to write a country song. Stay tuned.” Later on Bob McKenzie let the world know it was a fake account and to get back to Christmas shopping.
  • Matt Cooke’s elbow to Keith Yandle from Sunday night. Yandle called for a 5 game suspension. What do you think of it?

Connolly out a week … Garon CBJ #1 goalie … Rinne could start Wed. … Preliminary talks for Ehrhoff … Another Waffle tossing video

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Tim Connolly will be out at least a week after having reconstructive surgery on his nose. Connolly was hit into the boards on Satruday, he returned to the game with full face shield. Sabres captain Craig Rivet has been a healthy scratch, and Lindy Ruff left the press conference when asked about it.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Mathieu Garon has taken over the title of the Columbus Blue Jackets number one goalie. Steve Mason has struggled and is looking to regain his confidence.

“I told Matty (Garon) I don’t know how long this is going to last,” Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. “But don’t worry about Vancouver (Thursday’s opponent) until we get done with Calgary. Don’t worry about Chicago (Dec. 26) until we’re done with Vancouver. Just focus on what we need to do. Just focus on beating Calgary tonight.”

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Marco Sturm will make his debut with the LA Kings tonight, but he’ll be eased back into action. Sturm will skate on the 4th line with Trevor Lewis and Alexei Ponikarovsky. Brad Richardson will be on the top line with Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown. Justin Williams will be with Jarret Stoll and Ryan Smyth. Kyle Clifford will be with Michal Handzus and Wayne Simmonds. Oscar Moller was returned to Manchester. Jonathan Quick will start in net.
  • Bryan Mullen via twitter: Pekka Rinne says he’s ready to return and could start on Wednesday against the Blackhawks if coach Trotz makes the call.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: There have been preliminary talks between the Canucks and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. Ehrhoff is making $3.1 million this season, and will be one of four UFA defenseman for the Canucks, Kevin Bieksa, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts are the others.

“I definitely want to stay, but there are two sides involved in that,” said Ehrhoff. “I stopped thinking about it [contract] and just try to do my best to help the team. That’s my main focus right now and everything else isn’t. There’s not much I can do other than play good hockey and try not to get distracted by it.”
  • Ron MacGregor of the Globe and Mail: In the past few weeks there may have been several teams who might have considered replacing their coach:  New Jersey (John MacLean), Calgary (Brent Sutter), Minnesota (Todd Richards), Toronto (Ron Wilson), Ottawa (Cory Clouston), Washington (Bruce Boudreau), Anaheim (Randy Carlyle) and Buffalo (Lindy Ruff).
  • Another waffle tossing incident in Toronto last night. Waffle tossing during play isn’t cool.

Fleischmann to Cancucks? Kings? Would the Pens trade Malkin? Would the Devils trade Brodeur? Perron close to be symptom free

  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Rumors are heating up that the Washington Capitals are looking to move Tomas Fleischmann for a defenseman. Fleischmann has 4 goals in 22 games, was a healthy scratch mid November against the Sabres, and is a UFA at seasons end. The Capitals were interested in Kevin Bieksa in the off-season. There was a late night rumor last night that Fleischmann could be heading to the LA Kings.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Dispatch: David Perron has missed his 12th straight game will post-concussion symptoms. He’s now able to at least play video games, before he was only able to rest. Perron was hit [24] days ago by Joe Thornton (I guess those people calling him a faker were completely wrong, and no I’m not referring to Gary Bettman), and feels he’s getting ‘close’ to being symptom free. Perron said this about Thornton, “Obviously he’s not trying to hurt me there. He doesn’t know it’s going to go on this long and I’m going to miss this many games, so obviously he wouldn’t do that.”
  • Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne said he’ll be ready to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Lubomir Visnovsky will see today how his back is feeling before declaring if he will/won’t play tonight. Joffery Lupul could rejoin the team today after playing a few games with Syracuse of the AHL.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Sami Salo continues to rehab from his ruptured Achilles, with reports of him beginning skating in 3 weeks, with a possible January return. No timetable has been set.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey could be trade bait, they are looking to add some grit and leadership. Evgeni Malkin is having another ‘average’ season, and the Penguins might consider dealing him for a heavy ransom, and go with Jordan Staal as their #2 center. The Oilers may have an interest in Dallas Stars Dman Mark Fistric. The Stars may not be interested in giving Brad Richards a deal in the 6-8 year range as they may be worried about his foot speed as he gets older. The Stars may prefer a 3 year deal. The Kings will be interested if the Stars are thinking of dealing him.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks wonders if the Devils would consider trading Martin Brodeur. Lou would likely never approach Brodeur about this, Brodeur would have to bring it up with Lou. The Capitals would have to be interested if he were to become available. The Capitals could send a young goaltenders, “John Carlson or Karl Alzner — Mike Green? as well as young center.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Ron Wilson continues to juggle his lines looking for some sort of offense. Tyler Bozak who was/is the teams number 1 center was dropped to the 3rd and 4th lines in Saturday’s loss to the Senators. The Leafs are on a 0-7-1 road streak and having only scored 16 goals on the road in 10 games.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs aren’t considering sending Tyler Bozak to the Marlies, but Simmons thinks they should reconsider as he’s “He is 316th in the NHL in scoring, 394th in scoring at even strength, 153rd in power-play points. He is on pace for a terrible 23-point season.” Simmons wonders what the trade value for Mikhail Grabovski would be if Burke through his name out there, his value may not get higher than it is now.

Stamkos and Weber to talk extensions with their respective clubs … Carter and Leino contracts next for Flyers? Mitchell out 4-6 weeks … More injury updates

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Steven Stamkos’s agent, Don Meehan, is expected to meet with Lightning GM Steve Yzerman today to discuss contract extension. The Nashville Predators continue to talk with Don Meehan about a contract extension for Shea Weber. Former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut is still trying to get an arena built to bring the Nordiques back Quebec City. The Red Wings haven’t begun contract talks with soon to be UFA goalie, Jimmy Howard.
  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: The LA Kings have lost Willie Mitchell for 4-6 weeks with a fractured wrist (we noted yesterday that initial x-rays didn’t detect the fracture, an MRI was done yesterday). Alexei Ponikarovsky will be out 4 weeks with a broken finger.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers have signed the 22-year old Claude Giroux to a 3 year contract extension. He’ll have cap hit of $3.75 million, earning $2.75 million in 2011-12, $3.5 million in 2012-13, and $5 million in 2013-14. GM Paul Holmgren is also working on signing Jeff Carter and Ville Leino. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Now that Claude Giroux is looked up for the next 3 years, look for the Flyers to try to sign Jeff Carter to a long-term extension.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Simon Gagne continues to be out with a strained neck (a concussion has been ruled out). He hasn’t been cleared for skating yet, has been riding a stationary bike.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto media continues to bring up Ron Wilson’s firing again as the team has 1 regulation win in the last 9 games.

“I don’t even talk to Brian (Burke) about stuff like this,” he said. “It suddenly switched from Lindy Ruff to me overnight and it’s always coming out of Toronto. There is some coach in the league that we’re talking about and I get asked not just about my own situation, but every other coach who is losing a couple of games and it always seems to come out of Toronto, not from the city where the coach is struggling a little bit.”

  • Adrian Dater via twitter: Colorado Avalanche injury update. Craig Anderson skated but is still a week or two away from returning. Adam Foote skated but is still out indefinetly. Kyle Cumiskey is also out indefinitely, while Ryan Wilson is out another week.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers have fired their AHL (Adirondack Phantoms) coach Greg Gilbert. The Phantoms are 2-10-1 and losers of 9 straight. Last week they sent their leading scorer Pat Maroon home. He could be traded or loaned to another team today when Holmgren meets with other GM’s at the general managers meetings, with a team source saying the Lightning could be the leading candidate.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Rumors have surfaced that the Montreal Canadiens are clearing cap space, with the possibility of signing Bill Guerin. Guerin hasn’t heard from GM Pierre Gauthier at all. News on what Guerin plans on doing appears to still be weeks away. If he were to sign somewhere, it would still take a couple weeks to get in game shape. Guerin is also talking to MSG and VS regarding some TV work.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: David Krejci never lost consciousness when he suffered his “moderate” concussion, he’ll be reevaluated today, and will take an exertion test later this week. Krejci will likely be out 10-14 days.
  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres all-star goalie Ryan Miller returned to practice yesterday and should be back either Wednesday or Thursday, with Thursday being more likely according to coach Ruff. Craig Rivet is battling the flu. Nathan Gerbe took part in no-contact drills as he recovers from a broken jaw.
  • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: The Vancouver Canucks are expected to get defenseman Dan Hamhuis back tonight after missing the last 8 games with a foot injury. Keith Ballard recently returned from a concussion but has been relatively ineffective. Andrew Alberts and Aaron Rome have filled in well. Sami Salo is recovering ahead of schedule so far, and could return to the lineup next month. Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: MacIntyre thinks that if Hamhuis returns, Ballard should sit over Rome.

Burns Cancer takes a turn for the worse … Injury updates on Salo, Burrows, Salmela and Lydman

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Former coach Pat Quinn’s battle with lung cancer may have taken a turn for the worse. Burns returned to his home in Quebec, and is with his family. In 2004 Burns was diagnosed with colon cancer, a year later he was diagnosed with liver cancer. In 2009 it was made public that he had lung cancer, and wouldn’t undergo treatments for it.
  • Greg Brady via twitter: Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis said Sami Salo will be out at least 5 months and Alex Burrows could miss the start of the regular season.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: New Jersey Devils defenseman Anssi Salmela is a couple months behind in his recovery from surgery on his torn ACL and meniscus.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Last week Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman experience a bout of “double vision”. Lydman has experience migraines in the past, but they are not sure if that was the cause of the problem. They’ve been doing tests for the last week, and are still unsure what caused it. He won’t be allowed to participate in their training camp until they find out what the problems is, and how to treat it.

Salo out, Bieksa staying? Ryan and Wisniewski still unsigned … Kariya to the Kings?

  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Don’t wait for Bobby Ryan to sign an offer sheet with someone. “Bobby wants to remain in Anaheim and they want him there,” Guy (Ryan’s agent) told Sporting News. The Ducks would match most offer sheets.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: James Wisniewski is set to go to arbitration on August 3rd. Wisniewski’s agents wouldn’t rule out the possibility of getting something done before the 3rd. Bob Murray, the Ducks GM, expects to go to arbitration. Last year, the sides signed a 1 year deal before to avoid the process, but don’t look for that to happen this year.
  • The Vancouver Province: Sami Salo will be out for at least 3 months with a torn achilles tendon while playing floorball (similar to floor hockey) in Finland.  The Canucks have 9 defenseman locked up, 6 make more than $3.25 million.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: With Salo out until Christmas, the Canucks may not be able to live without both Salo and Kevin Bieksa. Canucks GM Mike Gillis had hoped to swap Bieksa for a top 6 forword, but may now have to look to free agency to add some scoring.

Salo out indefinitely … Will the Sens let Volchenkov walk? Detroit’s options

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings could have a similar look next season. Some teammates and front office people think the Nicklas Lidstrom will be back next season, and the hope is that he’ll do it closer to $6 million rather than his 2009-10 salary of $7.45 million. Tomas Holstrom should receive a contract, and Todd Bertuzzi could get one as well. RFA’s Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller should be getting offers as well.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun: Warren thinks the Ottawa Senators should not bring back Anton Volchenkov next season. Volchenkov already turned down a contract extension and could be looking at a deal in the 5 year, $22.5 million. If he was to take around $3.5 million, that would be okay, but it sounds like he’s looking for the big payday. The Sens may be willing to let him go.
  • Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News: One area the Red Wings may look to improve this off-season is the supporting cast, and overall depth. They could use some toughness, and some extra scoring. They lost a lot of goals before this past year. They probably won’t have the cash to add a big scorer, though there really isn’t much on the free agent list. The Wings could also look at moving Chris Osgood, if another team feels he could be a #1 goalie still, even though he’s 37 years old.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers will look at bringing in a backup goalie, with Martin Biron and Johan Hedberg apparently at the top of Glen Sather’s wish list.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues don’t appear to be in a rush to make contract offers to RFAs David Perron and Erik Johnson, talks with both are just beginning . Johnson is not eligible to receive an offer sheet since he missed a year of service with a knee injury. Perron is eligible to receive an offer sheet, and the Blues as an organization are okay with having their RFAs pass the July 1st date if they are not ready to meet the contract demands. Doug Armstrong will be taking over as team GM Larry Pleau on July 1st, and will handling contract negotiations before that. Erik Johnson was the 1st overall pick back in 2008, and will probably be looking for a big deal.

Vanek and Salo out with Injuries

  • The Buffalo Sabres are off to a good start this season (4-0-1), beating the Red Wings 6-2 last night, but in the process, have lost sniper Tomas Vanek for an extended period of time. Coach Lindy Ruff said it could be ‘weeks’ before Vanek returns from an ‘upper body injury’. The Sabres will definitely miss his scoring touch, but they do have some good scoring depth.
  • In other injury news that shouldn’t be much of a surprise, injury prone Sami Salo should be on his yearly trip to the IR soon. Salo sprained his medial collateral ligament and will be out 4-6 weeks. Salo hasn’t been close to playing a full season since 2003-04. It’s the last thing the Canucks need, as they are already without Daniel Sedin, Pavol Demitra and Mathieu Schneider.
  • There is still no word on Vesa Toskala’s injury. He had an MRI done on Tuesday but the results haven’t been made public yet. I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s a ‘lower body injury’ and he’ll be out indefinitely. He’ll have plenty of time to heal since the Leafs only play once in the next 11 days. Jonas Gustavsson is out for another week or so.
