Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Starting Goalies on December 30th, 2011
- Brian Burke via twitter: “Always looking to upgrade our team in terms of trades! Always! 24/7! Not easy! The other 29 GM’s are simply not reasonable!”
- David Staples via twitter: “All those folks burning to trade Hemsky, what will you reasonably expect for him? Makes no sense to trade him at such low value.”
- Katie Strang via twitter: The Rangers have waived forward Sean Avery.
- Mike Harrington via twitter: The Sabres 4-6 week timeline for Tyler Myers injury was always very optimistic. Scaphoid injuries can be 8-12 weeks. John Vogl via twitter: Myers said there is no timeline on his return from wrist surgery:
“It’s not quite where it needs to be for me … to jump back in. It’s just taking a little longer than we hoped for. I’ll come back as soon as I’m ready. It’s just a matter of making sure I don’t come back too early to put it at risk for reinjury.”

Stars new owner … Wendy’s owner interested in Devils … Raymond could return this week … Pronger, Coburn ailing … Oshie in, Colaiacovo out
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 22nd, 2011
- Mark Stepneski of ESPN: Stars new owner Tom Gaglardi on his philosophy on spending money on players:
“I learned in the Western Hockey League that they only way you win is you build from within. You build, draft, develop and coach. That’s the philosophy I come with. I think there have been enough cases around the NHL to know that you cannot buy a winner, so I believe in the old fashioned way of building teams. Having said that, we’re here to win. This isn’t about anything other than becoming a great team and pursuing championships. If Joe (Nieuwendyk) and his staff think that is something we can do in terms of stepping up and doing more in that regard, then we’re going to do it.”
Gaglardi would also like to bring Mike Modano back into the organization in some capacity.
- Josh Kosman of the NY Post: Billionaire Nelson Peltz (owner of Wendy’s) may be interested in buying $250 million of the New Jersey Devils debt. Peltz could step in if the current ownership fails in their talks with it’s lenders to restructure their debt. Peltz was interested in buying the Islanders last December. The Devils missed an Oct. 17th deadline on an approximate $80 million principal payment. They were able to extend the deadline. The Devils and the Devils Arena Entertainment unit are losing about $15 million a year.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Mason Raymond could be back in the lineup for their 3 game road trip, which begins against the Avalanche on Wednesday. They also play on Friday in Phoenix and Saturday in San Jose. Dan Murphy via twitter: Raymond says there is no timetable for his return. GM Mike Gillis said that Raymond will be back this week. Coach Alain Vigneault said a stint in Chicago is also an option.
- Frank Servalli via twitter: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger has a virus, and Braydon Coburn is not allowed contact due to an upper-body injury.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen will be back on the ice in a day or two. He was feeling “residual effects” from knee surgery.
- Kevin Schultz of Islanders Point Blank: Schultz wonders if the Islanders have lost faith in their coach. Capuano has called them out privately and publicly.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward T.J. Oshie didn’t skate yesterday but is expected to play tonight against the Kings. Oshie jammed his wrist on Saturday. Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo tweaked his hamstring and won’t play. He is listed as day-to-day.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Magnus Paajarvi has been a healthy scratch for 3 of the last 7 games. Devan Dubnyk is expected to make the start tonight against the Predators.
Trade groundwork has been laid … Time running short for Turris … Devils and Kings talking … Krejci odd man out … Filatov on his way out
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 17th, 2011
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams are closing in on the point where they know what they have and what they may need. Blue GM Doug Armstrong:
“A lot of groundwork has been laid and (Tuesday) was more putting fertilizer on some of those seeds you planted to see what happens. You get more work done when you’re in the room with 30 people than trying to pick up the phone 30 different times.”
Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster:
“We have a lot of work to do,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “We’re not happy where we are. We need to improve in a lot of areas. This isn’t acceptable to be where we are right now.”
The Hurricanes are 1-5-0 in their last 6 and are in need of a shakeup. The Islanders have dropped to last in the Eastern Conference. The Jets may be thinking long-term and have 2 UFA’s in Chris Mason and Johnny Oduya. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:
“I’m not a big believer on putting deadlines on anything,” he said. “You make decisions based on what the right timing is for you. The league puts a lot of deadlines on you for signing guys or trading deadlines, so you certainly have parameters. But I’m not going to put any deadlines on it.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The NHL board of governors will vote on realignment at the Dec. 5th-6th meetings. The Wings would like to move to the Eastern Conference, or at least play home-and-homes with the other Conference. Western Conference teams don’t want to see the Red Wings move to the East. Coyotes GM Don Maloney reiterated his stance with Kyle Turris.
“For the 15-hundredth time, we have no intention of trading him, regardless of the offer, at all whatsoever,” Maloney told ESPN.com.
Turris has 1 and 2 year offers from the Coyotes sitting on the table. The Blue Jackets have intensified their efforts to get a goalie. Antero Niittymaki won’t be back for another 3-4 weeks, but could be on the move at some point. Teams have inquired to see if he’s available.
- The Fourth Period: The LA Kings and NJ Devils maybe talking trade, they are both scouting each other. The Devils have been interested in Jonathan Bernier in the past, but sources close to the Kings have said they are not interested in trading Bernier at this moment, unless blown away by an offer. The Devils may also be looking for some scoring help, but that help likely isn’t coming from the Kings, unless they are interested in Dustin Penner. Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson could be trade candidates as well.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson notes the Predators have positioned themselves well to retain both Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. They may be able to get Suter in the 7 years for $49 million range and Weber for 6 or 5 years at $7.5 million. Matheson doesn’t see them trading either defenseman and wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander Radulov returns to Nashville next season. Matheson also thinks that if Linus Omark isn’t called up in the next month, he’ll head back to Europe.
- James Murphy via twitter: Murphy calls the Rask for Nash rumors bogus and comical.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks that David Krejci could be the odd guy out in Boston with Bergeron and Seguin down the middle. The Bruins aren’t sure he’s a $5 million a year guy.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: CSKA of the KHL is working on a loan with the Senators regarding Nikita Filatov.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has said again that he is not interested in Marty Turco. Names on Burke’s radar could be Scott Clemmensen (FLA), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI) and Antero Niittymaki (SJ). Saturday will mark 4 weeks since James Reimer has hit by Brian Gionta. Ben Scrivens will start tonight, marking his 6th start in the last 7 games.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein wonders if it’s time for the Trent Hunter experiment in LA to end, and to bring up a young speedy forward.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: If Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz is sent to the minors, they’ll have $6.95 million in cap space. Plenty of room for a center and/or a power play QB.
Visnovsky and Goligoski out 4 weeks … Hagman on re-entry waivers … Green out … Blue Jackets looking for goaltender
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 12th, 2011
- Kevin Allen via twitter: Ducks defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky will out 4 weeks with a broken finger. Curtis Zupke via twitter: The Ducks aren’t expected to make any moves today. Kurtis Foster has been their 7th defenseman.
- Eric Francis via twitter: The Flames have put Niklas Hagman on re-waivers. Have to wait until 10 am on Monday to find out if anyone has claimed him. (He has a $3 million cap hit, he can be had for $1.5 million).
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Alex Goligoski has a broken thumb and is out about 4 weeks.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green will not be in the lineup tonight. Alexander Semin will play.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter will return tonight. Goaltender Mark Dekanich suffered a groin injury and could be out weeks. GM Scott Howson said they are not actively pursuing a goaltender. Evgeni Nabokov is a name they might consider. Joe Yerdon of Pro Hockey Talk: The Jackets could also call the Panthers about Scott Clemmensen or pursue free agent Marty Turco.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets lines: Nash – Carter – Umberger; Prospal – Letestu – Johansen; Vermette – Pahlsson – Dorsett; Calvert – MacKenzie – Boll. Steve Mason will start in net with Allen York as his backup.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning winger Ryan Malone is still not skating but they are hopeful for Monday in Winnipeg.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators tonight. Brian Lee will replace David Rundblad on the blueline.
- John Vogl via twitter: Ryan Miller will start in net for the Sabres tonight against the Bruins.
Flyers sign Coburn … Maple Leafs goalie options … Would Iginla seek Cup elsewhere? Chorney to waivers, Oilers interested?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 9th, 2011
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn signs a 4 year, $18 million contract extension.
- Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer has been told the Maple Leafs may be looking at Marty Turco if James Reimer is out long-term. David Alter via twitter: Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov could also be an option for the Maple Leafs.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Fialkov thinks that Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen could be a good fit in Toronto. It’s obvious that Jacob Markstrom is ready for NHL duty. Panthers GM Dale Tallon won’t just give Clemmensen away though.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Flames captain Jarome Iginla wants to win the Cup, and he’d like to do it with the Flames. He thinks the Flames have a shot, as any team that makes the playoffs has a legitimate shot. Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun wrote a piece about Ray Bourque and how he left the Bruins for a shot at the Cup with the Avalanche. Demanding a trade to a team doesn’t guarantee that “it’s any better on the other side”
“Absolutely,” Iginla agreed. “There’s probably a couple teams — Washington got off to a great start, Pittsburgh is pretty strong, not even with having [Sidney Crosby] back. But I wouldn’t even say those teams are above the way Colorado and Detroit used to be above us, above the rest of the group. It is a danger, you think, ‘Oh, it’s a better chance,’ but really, you have to be in the playoffs and give yourself those chances. Unfortunately, we’ve missed out on a couple lately. Each year is another chance.”
There is a growing group of people how think the Flames would be better off trading Iginla. Iginla has a no-movement clause so it’s ultimately up to him.
“You know what? The organization year in and year out [has been] committed financially to the cap to spend and give the team a chance,” Iginla said. “That’s important, too. I believe if we’re close and that one player, if you need that, I think they would go for it as opposed to some teams just financially can’t do it. There’s a lot of positives. I just want to get there.”
- Michael Russo via twitter: There will be no supplemental discipline for Nick Johnson’s alleged head butt.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Blues put Taylor Chorney on waivers. The Jets put Ben Maxwell on waivers. Mattias Ritola cleared $125 waivers. Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks the Oilers may put a claim on Chorney, they originally lost him to the Blues.
Lightning looking for top 4 Dman … Plenty of goalies could be on the market … Avs Sacco and Sherman may be on hotseats
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Trades on November 9th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun would like to see what the Blue Jackets can do when Jeff Carter returns, and adds that Steve Mason won’t be the starting goalie next season. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is working the phones trying to find a deal to help out his struggling team. Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is looking to add a top 4 type defenseman. Blues GM Doug Armstrong won’t hesitate to make a trade or two if Hitchcock can’t lead them to a quick turnaround.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Panthers backup goalie Scott Clemmensen is in the final year of his deal and making $1.2 million. The Panthers may look to move to clear room for rookie Jacob Markstrom.
“You never know,” Tallon said. “There are things that can come into play moving forward. We’ll see what happens. I think we have good depth in our organization in goaltending. I’d rather err on the side of caution.”
If a team wanted to part with considerable assets, they may be able to pry Cory Schneider out of Vancouver or Jonathan Bernier out of LA. Evgeni Nabokov is being showcased by the Islanders. Nabokov is only earning $570,000 which may interest the Blue Jackets. Chris Botta is saying the asking price for Nabokov is a 2nd round pick, which may be a bit steep. Wild’s Josh Harding could be an option for some teams, but the Wild may not be actively looking to deal. He makes $750,000 and will be a UFA at the end of the season.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Despite being 7-7-1, the Avalanche have been struggling and “things are going to get serious” if it continues. Pressure is starting to mount on coach Joe Sacco and GM Greg Sherman. There have been ‘whisperings’ around the league about their job status. Dater wonders if Sacco is juggling lines too much? Puts guys in the doghouse too fast? Lose confidence in guys to fast?
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers acquired 23 year old winger Francois Bouchard from the Capitals for 21 year defenseman Tomas Kundratek. Both will remain in the AHL. Anton Stralman has been medically cleared and will join team his teammates for practice today.

Eric Staal has just 6 points in 14 games, and is not injured according to Rutherford.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Tim Connolly will be out up to 2 weeks with an upper-body injury. Terry Koshan via twitter: James Reimer is not practicing.
- Harvey Fialkov via twitter: The Panthers send goalie Jacob Markstrom to the AHL and recall Scott Clemmensen. This move gives GM Dale Tallon time to find a trade partner for Clemmensen.
- Craig Custance via twitter: If the Blues continue their struggling ways under new coach Ken Hitchcock, trades could be coming.
“You’re going to see guys moved out of there,” the source said. “Those are the guys that you’re going to find out that they weren’t ready to buy into his program. He’s going to move them. Doug Armstrong is going to move them out and bring in people.”
- Tim Wharnsby via twitter: Ken Hitchcock said he was offer the Blues head coaching position at 3 pm, and was heading to St. Louis in his car by 6:30 pm.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Daniel Alfredsson is making progress. He’s able to skate but still no timetable.

- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils lines at practice: Parise-Henrique-Clarkson; Sykora-Elias-Zubrus; Tedenby-Carter-Palmieri; Pelley-Mills-Janssen. Rich Chere via twitter: Kovalchuk isn’t practicing today. Defenseman Andy Greene is practicing. Devils coach Peter Deboer said that Kovalchuk won’t play tomorrow unless there is a dramatic recovery overnight.
- Fluto Shinzawa via twitter: Tuuka Rask will start in net for the Bruins. Rich Peverley is out. Joe Haggerty via twitter: Peverley has a minor undisclosed injury according to Claude Julien.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Looking like Evgeni Nabokov will start in net for the Islanders tonight in Boston.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur will start in net for the Devils tomorrow.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson is expected to start tomorrow against the Panthers. Luke Schenn will return to the lineup.
Markstrom looking good … Coaching change coming for CBJ? CAL, CBJ, TB, and MON need to make a move … Green to be a FA at end of season
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 25th, 2011
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Panthers rookie goalie Jacob Markstrom looked good last night. Jose Theodore has a ‘core injury’ but looked fine at practice.
“Sometimes you have to go on performance and Marky played so well in the third period [Saturday] and earned his place in net,’’ Dineen said. “Theo’s our starter and a great player. He’s going to get back in there soon. Jacob not only earned that start but earned that victory.’’
Fialkov can’t see Markstrom not remaining with the team all season, even after Scott Clemmensen comes back from injury. George Richards via twitter: “Not right now he isn’t” was Richards response to whether Markstrom will be sent the minors when Clemmensen is healthy.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: There are rumors that the Blue Jackets ownership are considering forcing a coaching change, possibly bringing back Ken Hitchcock. They are paying him $1.3 million already. Friedman sees this as a lose-lose for everyone. With Florida trading David Booth for contracts that expire after this season, it opens up top 6 positions for next year, possibly for Jonathan Huberdeau, Nick Bjugstad or Quinton Howden. Maple Leafs say they weren’t sniffing around Booth.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams that shouldn’t wait long before making a move are the Flames, Blue Jackets, Lightning and Canadiens.Flames: “I am both making and receiving calls as it relates to possible deals, although there is nothing imminent, and for the most part the calls are more about finding out what fellow GMs are thinking,” Feaster wrote in an email. “We learned last year that we simply cannot dig a big hole for ourselves and then try to make a mad dash for the final playoff spot.”
The Blue Jackets are winless and need to make a trade or coaching change before the season is completely lost.
The Canadiens and Lightning need a defenseman. Andrei Markov is out until at least November. Mattias Ohlund is out longer than expected. Eric Brewer is playing with an injury. “According to an NHL source, both the Canadiens and Lightning have had conversations with the Toronto Maple Leafs about a deal involving one of Toronto’s defensemen.”
- The Fourth Period: Capitals defenseman Mike Green will be a free agent after this season, and carries a $5.25 million salary cap hit. Green could be looking for a $6 million plus on a long term deal, especially if he puts together another good season. It’s uncertain when both sides will begin contract discussions.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Berstein answers a question about what the return for Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier would be with “More than anyone willing to give now.”
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Teams scouting the Panthers-Canadiens game last night: Blues and Maple Leafs (2 of them), Avalanche, Red Wings, Canucks, Flames, Oilers, Kings, Penguins, Wild, Capitals, Senators and Coyotes.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Brian Elliott is expected to start in net for the Blues tomorrow night against the Canucks.
Kane, Hamhuis, and Malhotra will get into first pre-season game … Police may have name of banana thrower … Cap could effect Couturier … Laich’s versatility
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 28th, 2011
- Tim Sassone of the Dailly Herald: Patrick Kane will get into his first pre-season game tonight. He’ll be centering Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. Patrick Sharp skated on his own for the 3rd straight day yesterday. “He’s progressing well,” Joel Quenneville said. “We’re very happy with where he’s at. Each and every day he’s able to do a little bit more. We’re very encouraged.” The Blackhawks camp roster is now at 31.
- Debora Van Brenk of the Toronto Sun: London Police think they have a name of a person who they think may have tossed the banana at Wayne Simmonds last week. They haven’t arrested anyone, which was being reported by some. Police should release more details today. A banana was tossed towards the ice earlier in the game but it didn’t make it to the ice.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Wayne Simmonds won’t be disciplined for his alleged homophobic slur towards Sean Avery as the NHL couldn’t substantiate what was said on the ice.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is still tinkering with lines, especially when it comes to Brooks Laich, whether he’ll be on the wing or at center. “As it stands right now we’re still up in the air, whether would it be center or wing with him,” Boudreau said. “We just want to get him in a couple more games at both positions for him to feel comfortable at either one, to start taking more faceoffs in case it was center that he’s playing.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Recently signed Chris Campoli found himself partnered with Josh Gorges. Hal Gill and P.K. Subban round out the other top 4 while Andrei Markov is out. Markov is still rehabbing and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to go for the opener.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis will get into his 1st game since Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final tonight. Canucks forward Manny Malhotra will get into the game as well, his first since his offseason eye procedure. Defenseman Aaron Rome will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a broken finger. Nolan Baumgartner will be out 4 weeks with a broken foot. Steve Pinizzotto is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks that salary cap constraints may hurt Sean Couturier’s chances of making the Flyers.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen had a minor knee procedure and will miss at least the first couple game of the season. Jose Theodore is the teams starter, and they may keep Tyler Plante over Jacob Markstrom. They want Markstrom to get a lot of playing time in the NHL.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Steve Staios is on a tryout with the Islanders and hopes to get a contract. He’s 64 games shy of 1,000.
