Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on August 25th, 2011
List below are the Top 30 Salary Cap Numbers for centers heading into the 2011-12 NHL season. Due to front-loading contracts (back-loaded in some cases), and teams having to deal with the salary cap, a players cap number takes precedence over their actual salary.

Winger for Malkin? Crosby to be ready for camp … Less money for Doughty … A deal for Crawford at the Draft … Will Umberger want to return?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 2nd, 2011
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have 3 areas to address this off-season. 1. Hire a power play coach. 2. Find a winger for Evgeni Malkin. 3. Upgrade secondary skill. The Penguins have 17 players under contract for next year at just over $55.4 million. They’ll need to add 6 players for under $7 million.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Shero on Crosby,
“He’s certainly going to be ready for camp,” Pens GM Ray Shero told ESPN.com Saturday. “He had really ramped it up before taking a week off. I know you don’t totally know with these things, but Dr. Collins has maintained the whole time that this is a manageable injury and that Sid will be fine. He’s got lots of time now.”
Chris Drury has a no movement clause so he won’t be sent to the minors which had been rumored last week. What the Sabres could be looking for this off-season, “If we can add a little more offense, we need a bit more,” Regier said. “And maybe someone who can add a little experience on the back end because we’re a little young there.” Senators GM Bryan Murray will start their coaching search next week, he already has about 6 applicants.
- Dan Arritt of ESPN Los Angeles: LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty struggled this past season when comparing to his 2009-10 campaign, and it might hit him in the pocket book. “The drop-off could wind up costing Doughty some dough if he stays with the Kings. He’ll be a restricted free agent on July 1 and free to accept offer sheets from other teams, though the Kings have the right to match.” The Kings also have Alec Martinez, Trevor Lewis, Oscar Moller, Wayne Simmonds and Brad Richardson as RFA’s. It’s likely that Moller will be the only one not returning. The Kings will also likely to take a run at Brad Richards. There were interested in him at the deadline but the Stars where still in the playoff hunt.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons wonders is the Maple Leafs could sign one of Shea Weber, Steven Stamkos or Drew Doughty to an offer sheet, costing them 4 1st round picks. The Phoenix Coyotes lost $36.6 million this past season.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Blackhawks and Corey Crawford will get a deal done at the draft. They are expected to offer deals in the 2,3, and 4 year range. There are rumors that the Canadiens could bury Scott Gomez and his $7.3 million cap hit in the minors next year.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wouldn’t be surprised if Alex Kovalev is in the KHL next year. Canadiens forward Lars Eller played Game 7 with a dislocated shoulder. Matheson doesn’t see the Bruins re-signing Tomas Kaberle unless he “gets his act in gear.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: RJ Umberger’s contract expires at the end of next season, and can start negotiating with the Blue Jackets after July 1st, but will he want to re-sign with the team. When asked about if he has concerns about the teams direction,
“That’s an important question for me to ask myself,” he said. “It’s something I need to consider. You only have so many years to play this game. I’m entering the stage of my career where these are the prime years. It’s important to me.
“I’d like to see how the summer plays out. From the end-of-the-year meetings (with Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and coach Scott Arniel), I know what they expect to do. They said they’re going to be active. But you want to see something done to feel better about the situation.”
Crosby confirms setback … Markov wants 3 years … Canadiens off-season notes … Knuble and Wideman update
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 29th, 2011
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins center Sidney Crosby confirms that he suffered a setback last week, and that he suffered a concussion at the Winter Classic. Crosby also believes that the Victor Hedman hit gave him his 2nd concussion in 5 days.
- Tony Marinaro via twitter: Back in March, the Canadiens offered Andrei Markov a 1 year deal for $5.75 million. Markov is looking for a 3 year deal, Canadiens offering 1.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens assistant coach Kirk Muller will become the head coach of the Dallas Stars, but it’s on hold as the team awaits new owners. GM Pierre Gautier will make UFA Andrei Markov and RFA Josh Gorges priorities. Hal Gill is also a UFA and will likely be back along side PK Subban. Scott Gomez carries a $7.37 million cap hit next year and they have the option of biting the bullet and sending him to the AHL. RFA Max Pacioretty is healthy and is in line for a multi-year contract. Andrei Kostitsyn and Benoit Pouliot are RFA’s and likely won’t be priorities. Due to salary cap constraints they likely won’t be a major player in the free agent market.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman remain optimistic that they’ll be able to return to the lineup at some point during this series.
“I think that’s very realistic,” said Knuble, who started to take hard shots in practice. “When that’s going to be I don’t know. There are a lot of factors. And so it kind of depends on how everything is going. If they keep winning, you don’t want to upset the boat. But at the same time I’m anxious to get back in. I’ll get back in as soon as I can. It’s tough to watch, but at the same time it’s fun to watch.”
“The range of motion is getting better, the skating is getting better, just gotta get in shape. Get a little more power in the leg and hopefully make a comeback shortly,” Wideman said. “We did a little skate there at the end. I mean, I’m still not 100 percent but it’s definitely a whole lot closer than it was a couple days ago.”
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Wideman and Knuble did skate today but not on with the regulars. Tom Poti not on the ice for 2nd straight day
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Jeff Carter wasn’t on the ice for the Flyers morning practice.
Gomez trade was ‘pure fiction’ … Stuart out 4-6 weeks … Sturm back in 10-14 days … Kovalev demoted to 4th line
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 9th, 2010
- Dave Stubbs via twitter: “French source” yesterday said the Scott Gomez was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. This Gomez trade was “pure fiction.”
- Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald: Boston Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a fractured metacarpal on his right ring finger. Steven Kampfer was recalled and will be paired with Adam McQuaid. Marco Sturm was cleared for contact and is targeting a mid-December return, he still remains on the trade block. “I’ve talked to (Chiarelli) once since last week and that’s it,” Sturm said. “I’m happy I’m still here but I’m not happy with the situation, it’s been hard on me and my family. It’s not fun but I’m trying to make the best of it.”
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Sturm says he’s 10-14 days away from being able to return to the lineup (or return to someone’s lineup).
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Alexei Kovalev and his lackluster play have been demoted to the 4th line during yesterday’s practice, and coach Cory Clouston hasn’t ruled out a ‘healthy scratch’ if his play doesn’t improve. “We’re not going to look at that (making Kovalev a healthy scratch) right now,” said Clouston. “We’re going to take it game-by-game. Ask me that in another night or two.”
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Willie Mitchell will see doctors this afternoon, and could receive clearance to get back in the lineup. He took part in a full practice, wearing a protect padding on his wrist. Terry Murray said he won’t play on the weekend, but should return not long after that.
- St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Post-Dispatch lists 10 players the St. Louis Blues could be potential trade targets: Brad Richards, Jarome Iginla, Alexander Semin, Dustin Penner, Michael Ryder, Mike Fisher, Stephen Weiss, Travis Zajac, Matt Moulson, Rich Peverley.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: The St. Louis Blues could have a new investor by early next year (2011).
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Chicago Blackhawks were going to loan Jeremy Morin to team USA for the World Junior Championship, but with the injuries the ‘Hawks have sustained as of late, he may remain in the NHL. Marian Hossa was put on the IR yesterday, retroactive to November 29th.
Leafs shopping Beauchemin and Komisarek … Habs want to get bigger up front … Sens interested in Bieksa? Plus more injuries and rumors
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 5th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery is working hard on his rehab from hip surgery and is hope to be back this season. In the next couple weeks he’ll likely begin skating with a OHL, then work his way up to the AHL on a 25 game pro tryout before a team is likely to take a chance on him. The Dallas Stars lenders are unlikely to grant the team the money to re-sign Brad Richards. With the Rangers being the top team to have interest in Richards since the Leafs are falling out of playoff contention. The Atlanta Thrashers will start working on a long term contract for their captain, Andrew Ladd. The Phoenix Coyotes still haven’t talked to Ilya Bryzgalov about a contact extension. Matthew Hulsizer will meet with the Board of Governors tomorrow regarding his potential purchase of the Coyotes. Francois Beauchemin ($3.8-million cap hit) and Mike Komisarek ($4.5-million cap hit) have been mentioned around the league, but their contracts makes them extremely difficult to move. The Montreal Canadiens would like to get bigger up front, and move Scott Gomez but his $7.34 cap hit makes it almost impossible (I still can’t believe Glen Sather was able to move him). Could the Habs be interested in Alex Kovalev? The Buffalo Sabres are trying to move captain Craig Rivet ($3.5 million) who’s been a healthy scratch 6 times this year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks that Kevin Bieksa would be a good fit with the Ottawa Senators, who have liked him for awhile. Garrioch thinks the St. Louis Blues should be interested in Brian Lee, he could be a reclamation project like Carlo Colaiacovo.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Evgeni Malkin missed another game because of his sore knee. He’s been wearing a brace for a month, and he isn’t letting on how much it bothers him.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Pekka Rinne had his knee scoped and he’ll be out 2-4 weeks. “Obviously it’s a big loss. Peks is not only our No. 1 goaltender, but he’s been playing terrific. Unfortunately, when they did the MRI and found out what they found out, they went in and scoped him. It’s unfortunate because he’s playing so well and we were sort of getting healthy. It would be nice to have some health, and then he goes down.” The Preds will roll with Anders Lindback.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers forward Ales Hemsky is out indefinitely with a right groin issue.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury is likely a week to 10 days away from returning to the NY Rangers lineup. Drury can make passes but isn’t shooting yet. Vinny Prospal has begun skating without equipment, no ETA on his return yet.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul returns to Anaheim but as of yesterday afternoon he hadn’t been given clearance to return just yet. He’s expected to meet with them this weekend, and could be in the lineup this afternoon.

Around the Boards: Rumors from LeBrun, Phaneuf requests trade? Payne replaces Murray in St. Louis, Avs interested in Versteeg?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 3rd, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- If Ilya Kovalchuk goes to the trade block, the Chicago Blackhawks could be a team that is interested. A deal would help clear some cap for next year. No talks between the 2 teams have taken place, it’s a theory presented by an executive from a Western Conference team.
- Winter Classic talks for next at Heinz field in Pittsburgh for a Pens-Caps match-up. One problem is Pittsburgh has already been in a Classic game. Elliotte Friedman stated that Dallas might want to host a game at Dallas stadium. Not sure how that one would work.
- Miroslav Satan signed with the Bruins for $700,000.
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove Video:
- Randy Workman of Hendricks Hockey: Don’t know how reliable Randy or the Hendricks site is, but he is reporting that Dion Phaneuf has requested a trade. This is coming from his “confidential source” … Ahhh, not just a source, a confidential source, so it must be legit. I think I’d file this one under ‘not true’. Could Phaneuf get traded? Sure, but I doubt he’s requested a trade.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Avalanche might be interested in the Blackhawks Kris Versteeg in the summer, and could offer a 2nd round pick and prospect Kevin Shattenkirk.
- ESPN Rumors via Ranger Rants: ‘Ranger Rants’ says they value Chris Drury a lot, and despite his no-movement clause, they would lean to keeping him. Yeah right, I doubt they could find a sucker for that bad contract. Players who won’t be moved by the Rangers: Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Matt Gilroy and Brandon Dubinsky. It still boggles my mind how Sather still has a job after all these years of making terrible signings.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Interview with newly appointed coach of the St. Louis Blues, Davis Payne. Payne replaced Andy Murray on an interim basis after Murray was fired yesterday. Payne has been given job until at least the end of the season, then they’ll determine which way they want to take the organization.
- Marc Antoine Godin of Cyberpresse.ca: Andrei and Sergie Kostitsyn of the Canadiens could both be out the lineup Sunday afternoon for a game against the Sabres.
- Rejean Tremblay of the Cyberpresse.ca: The Montreal Canadiens are now able to start negotiations with Tomas Plekanec. A problem facing GM Bob Gainey is that Plekanec will be looking in the $7 million range. Throw in the fact that both Halak and Price are RFA’s, and there is not a lot wiggle room for next years salary cap. This brings me back to a question I asked early last off-season, Why in the Hell did they trade for Scott Gomez and his awful contract?
Top 10 Worst NHL Contracts
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on July 12th, 2009
In the spirit of the free agent season with all the signings of high priced free agents, both restricted and unrestricted, we thought it would be a fitting time to throw together a bullet-list of what we deem to be the top 10 worst contracts in the league today. Keep in mind this list is factoring in the return on the investment, and not just the highest amounts.
We all know of at least a few times we’ve read about a signing and thought “what are they thinking?” Sometimes it works out for the GM and the team involved, and they look brilliant etc… Other times it blows up in their faces and we snicker and talk about how we knew it wouldn’t work. This list is detailing the latter of these scenarios, because it’s more fun.
So without further build-up, here is the list from 10th all the way to the #1 worst active contract in the NHL this season:
- 10th-Ed Jovanovski: (age 33) $6.5 million against the cap for a guy who scored 9 goals and 36 points last year while going -15. With 3 years in Phoenix he’s a combined -34. Granted most guys in Phoenix are on the minus side these days, but it’s the high-priced guys who are supposed to change that.
- 9th-Ryan Smyth: (age 33) $6.25 million against the cap. With 26 goals and 59 points last year, Smyth was really just doing what he always does as far as points in the regular season goes. Widely regarded as a playoff warrior, you’re not going to get return for Smyth unless you actually make the playoffs. Obviously making the playoffs hasn’t been the Kings forte in recent years.
- 8th-Daniel Briere: (age 31) $6.5 million against the cap. After a career season in 2006-07 with 32 goals and 95 points with the Sabers, the Flyers signed Briere to an eight-year, $52 million contract with a no-trade clause. The 72 points in the first year of the contract was a bit of a letdown for the Flyers, but last season he only managed to play 29 regular season games, recording 11 goals and 25 points while battling injuries. The little guys excelled in the post-lockout NHL, where every infraction was called to open up the game. We all knew it was “over-correcting”, that the powerplays would slow down as the players figured out the new rules and how to defend effectively within them. Less powerplays and open ice means less points for Briere.
- 7th-Dustin Penner
age 26) $4.25 million against the cap. After a great rookie season in Anaheim where Penner netted 29 goals and 45 points, helping to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history, playing with emerging stars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Penner was signed to an offer sheet while restricted when the Ducks where too slow to re-sign him. When Kevin Lowe of the Oilers offered 21.25 million over 5 years, Brian Burke of the Ducks publicly criticized Lowe and let Penner go rather than match the offer. With 17 goals and 37 points last season, Penner was publicly criticized by head coach Craig MacTavish for a lack of fitness and competitiveness after being made a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game. - 6th-Ryan Malone
age 29) $4.5 million against the cap. For a team with well publicized financial issues, the Tampa Bay lightning, this contract was a head scratcher from the moment it was announced. Front loaded at 6 million for the first 3 years starting last season, the seven year deal totals 31.5 million and concludes in the summer of 2015. Now, nobody is questioning weather or not Malone is a commodity worth having with an ability to score and toughness to spare, but 4.5 million average salary for 7 years with 22.6 goals per season average? A Comparable player is David Backes in St Louis who had 31 goals and 54 points for 2.5 million last season. - 5th-Jason Blake
35) $4 million against the cap. Entering the 3rd year of a 5 year deal signed by former Toronto Maple Leaf GM John Ferguson Jr totaling 20 million, Jason Blake has 40 goals in the 2 seasons he’s played in Toronto, ironically matching the 40 he netted for the Islanders in his last season playing there, resulting in the contract he now enjoys. It should be noted that Blake has had health issues (a rare but treatable form of cancer- chronic myelogenous leukemia) and has played as hard as anyone could expect under the circumstances, but to pay a 33 year old like a 40 goal guy when he only did it once (his previous high being 28) was ridiculous. For his part, Blake tried to score with over 300 shots on net in his first year of the deal, but was only able to score 15 goals and Ferguson Jr was replaced by Cliff Fletcher as in term GM in Toronto. - 4th-Wade Redden
age 32) $6.5 million against the cap. After spending a decade in the Canadian Capital city of Ottawa, Redden had impressive regular season numbers. With career highs in goals being 17 (12 on the PP) in 2003-04, followed by 50 points after the lockout, Redden was a plus 159 and an anchor on the blueline for the Senators. The problem for the Rangers is that good numbers in Ottawa are largely dependant on being on the ice with the top line of Heatley, Spezza, and Alfredsson. Last season for New York he only managed 3 goals for 26 points, a -5 and the wrath of the Madison Square Garden Faithful. On the bright side, only 5 more years… - 3rd-Chris Drury
age 32) $7.05 million against the cap. Drury has consistently put up decent numbers in his career, with 37 goals and 69 points being his highest totals in 2006-07 with the Buffalo Sabers. That said, decent numbers don’t get you 35.25 million over 5 years without the help of Ranger GM Glen Sather. In the first 2 years of this deal Drury has 47 goals and 114 points in the regular season, while earning 14.2 million in 163 games. That’s $123 684 per point, with an almost million dollar raise coming for the next 2 seasons. You would think this would make him untradable but our next contract proves nothing is impossible. Sorry to Rangers fans but there is a trend here. - 2nd-Scott Gomez
age 29) $7.357 million against the cap. After recording 13 goals and 60 points for New Jersey in 2006-07, once again Glen Sather Over-paid to land Gomez in a signing that bordered on insane. With all due respect to Gomez, we’d all take the money, Sather gave him 51.5 million over a seven year period starting the same day as the above mentioned Chris Drury. What was the plan here? Now they had 2 smallish centers making first line money, totaling 14.407 million in the salary cap era. As amazing as this blunder on Sather’s part is, somehow Bob Gainey in Montreal was crazy enough to trade for this contract, showing that really nothing is impossible. - 1st-Rick DiPietro
age 27) $4.5 million against the cap. On September 12, 2006, DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million contract with the Islanders, the longest official NHL contract ever to be signed. Since then, DiPietro has battled concussions as well as hip and knee surgery. Although Dipietro is a good goaltender this is what everyone was wondering about when he signed a 15 year deal at 25 years of age. Aside from Martin Brodeur and very few others, goaltenders rarely have this kind of longevity or consistant success. You need only look to Anaheim and JS Giguere, 2 years after winning the Stanley cup, losing his starting role to Jonas Hiller. There’s something to be said for not being too comfortable with your position within a franchise. Knowing you’re set for 15 years professionally, as well as the rest of your life financially, is a good breeding ground for apathy.
So there you have it. I’d like to add an honourable mention to a couple that just missed making the cut:
- Dany Heatley-Ottawa-Signed 6 year, $45 million deal before last season and after making 10 million last year, requests a trade. Nearly impossible to achieve and with his 4 million signing bonus paid out on July 1st, Ottawa is already in for the “small blind” and will likely play the hand out for this year.
- Anze Kopitar-Los Angeles-Signed a 7 year, $47.6 deal as a restricted free agent. He might be worth that one day but at 21, it’s way to early to tell. Maybe give the kid something to work for in the future before giving him a boat load of money? Too much too soon…
The worst all time contract could be The Islanders signing of Alexei Yashin, or maybe the $20 million for 2 years offered to Mats Sundin by the Canucks last season, but we’ll need to do a list of all time worst contracts to make sure we give credit where it’s due.
Scott Gomez Trade to Montreal

- Two sources are reporting the trade as: Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Mike Busto (both fringe prospects at best) for F Chris Higgins, D Ryan McDonagh (Montreal’s 1st Round Pick in 2007) and D Pavel Valentenko. Though Higgins star has dimmed (and I’m not a fan), that GM Sather was able to move Gomez for Cap Space and two young defensemen is a revelation. Not to mention, McDonagh now likely becomes NY’s top prospect. It’s a wise move that corrects a rather large mistake Sather made two years ago. I love Gomez as a player, but he is a $3.5mm player with a $7.2mm long term contract. I am starting to believe the Habs fans…that Gainey might not be the right man to rebuild this team.
Breaking News…Scott Gomez traded to Montreal Canadians.
