Gagner may not be worth a 1st … Teams told Nash won’t be traded … Injury updates on Hemsky, Wolski, Parros, Gomez, Kostitsyn, Jokinen and Huselius
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 8th, 2011
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Reader asks if the Oilers could get a 1st round pick for Sam Gagner from the Islanders? Matheson doesn’t think Gagner could get them a 1st round pick. He’s not a true playmaker or scorer. If they decide to move Gagner, they may package him with a defenseman to sweeten the pot. The Flames need a center but they wouldn’t trade him there. The Senators, Devils and Islanders could use a centerman. The Oilers have too many forwards and possibly too many defenseman. The Oilers want to see Ales Hemsky playing healthy before deciding to offer him a long-term contract. He could be looking for a 3 or 4 year deal, possibly around $5 million a season.
- Elliotte Freidman of CBC: If the St. Louis Blues are paying Ken Hitchcock less than $1.3 million, the Blue Jackets will make up the difference. When asked about why the Blues just don’t offer a million or less, Freidman found out that: there is a formula the NHL uses for situations like this where coaches receive an average salary of coaches that have similar experience. Rick Nash has a full no-trade clause for the next 3 seasons. Teams that have called about Nash have been told “He has not asked to be traded and will not be traded.” Martin Brodeur has indicated he wants to play next year.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers winger Ales Hemsky could return tonight. Coach Tom Renney said he’s thinking about it. Hemsky said: “I think I’m ready, but it’s not in my hands.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski will be out for a month as he requires surgery to repair a sports hernia. Wolski was placed on the IR on Friday.
- Jeff Miller of the OC Register: Ducks forward George Parros will be out a month after undergoing laser surgery on his left eye to correct a torn retina. Parros has hit with a deflected puck at Friday’s practice.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens center Scott Gomez is getting closer to returning to their lineup. When he returns it will put them with 5 centers, so 1 will have to move to the wing. It will have to be one of Gomez, Lars Eller or David Desharnais. Gomez is a better faceoff man and will likely center the 2nd or 3rd line. Eller found himself on the wing at yesterday’s practice. Gomez is questionable for Thursday’s game against the Coyotes.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Sergei Kostitsyn practiced yesterday and will be a game time decision for tonight. Kevin Klein didn’t practice but is a game time decision as well.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen may return to the lineup this week. He won’t play tonight but could go on Friday against the Rangers.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Kristian Huselius is still 2-3 weeks away from returning to the Blue Jackets lineup.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: If Kings coach Terry Murray sticks with the plan he laid out on Sunday, Jonathan Bernier should get the start tonight against the Predators.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks tonight against the Blues.
Trouble could be brewing for Predators … Varlamov could head to KHL tomorrow … Cole to test market … Senators options
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 29th, 2011
Nick Kypreos via twitter: Some are questioning Predators missing qualifying offers on RFA’s Cal O’Reilly, Nick Spaling, Matt Halischuk and Sergei Kostitsyn.
Pavel Lysenkov via twitter: Semyon Varlamov could sign a KHL contract tomorrow, 99% that it would be with SKA.
Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Erik Cole’s agent confirmed that he’d like to test free agency.
“Erik wants to see what the options are on July 1st,” Bartlett said via email. “That is in no way a slam on the Hurricanes or his appreciation of the role they have played in his career. He has never really explored free agency in his career and feels that he is at the age when it makes sense to see all offers before deciding on what he wants to do.”
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators currently have 15 players under contract at $43 million, and have a couple needs that would help bring them over the salary floor. 1. A forward who can put the puck in the net. 2. They need a backup goalie as they decided to let Curtis McElhinney walk. Some players they may go after are: Tomas Fleischmann, Michael Handzus, Tim Connolly, Josh Harding, Mike Smith, Alex Auld and Jose Theodore.
Hagman clears waivers … Backstrom has fractured thumb … Zherdev healthy scratch again … starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on February 22nd, 2011
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Flames forward Niklas Hagman cleared waivers. He may not be going to the AHL, they have 30 days/10 games to decide. McKenize adds that if they demote him, they won’t have the cap space to recall him, so he’d be there for the season.
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: Niklas Backstrom is day-to-day with a fractured thumb.
- Joshua Cooper via twitter: Predators forward Sergei Kostitsyn won’t be in the lineup tonight.
- Frank Seravalli via twitter: Nik Zherdev will be a healthy scratch for the 6th consecutive game.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson and Christian Hanson have been sent to the Marlies by the Maple Leafs.
- Sean Fitz-Gerald via twitter: JS Giguere hopes to return this weekend, hints that he may need off-season surgery to fix groin area issue.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Lines at Rangers practice: Dubi-Anisimov-Cally, Prospal-Boyle-Christensen, Wolski-Stepan-Zuccarello, and Avery-Newbury-Prust/Fedotenko.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Henrik Lundqvist is the 1st goalie off the ice, likely to get the start.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Johan Hedberg will be in the net for the Devils.
- Sam Charchidi via twitter: Sergei Bobrovsky will start for the Flyers tonight against the Coyotes.
- Thomas Reed via twitter: Steve Mason will be in net for the Blue Jackets tonight.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: James Reimer will start in net for the Leafs tonight.
B.Campbell out a month … Canucks clear some cap room … Cammalleri under review
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 3rd, 2010
- TSN: The Chicago Blackhawks will be without defenseman Brian Campbell for at least the first month of the season with a sprained knee.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Darcy Hordichuk and Shane O’Brien have been placed on waivers, and will be sent to the AHL if they clear. O”Brien’s salary is $1.6 million this year, Hordichuk’s cap hit is $750,000.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks rants about how the Islanders are circumventing the cap with using Yashin and Witt’s buyout to reach the salary floor, and how the CBA ‘allows’ teams to take advantage of these types of ‘loopholes’.
- Chris Johnston via twitter: Next round of cuts the Maple Leafs is Monday.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Michael Cammalleri slash on Nino Niederreiter will be under review by the league.
- Josh Cooper the Tennessean: Jonas Andersson and Sergei Kostitsyn are battling for the ‘depth’ position on the Nashville Predators, 26 players remain with the club. “For the most part, we are still looking at Kostitsyn, we are still looking at Andersson, we are still looking at all those guys,” Trotz said.
Canadiens send Sergei Kostitsyn to Nashville
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on June 29th, 2010
TSN: The Montreal Canadiens have sent Sergei Kostitsyn and future considerations to the Nashville Predators for UFA goalie Dan Ellis, RFA Dustin Boyd and future considerations.
Kostitsyn was qualified by the Canadiens the other day, surprising some because of the problems the team has had with him.
Dan Ellis posted on twitter that he’s excited to join a team with great tradition and passion.
It’s unknown at this point if he’ll be signing with the team. If he still believes he’s a #1 goalie, it won’t be with the Canadiens, who’ve pinned their hopes on Carey Price.
Some late day NHL Rumor quick hits
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 24th, 2010
Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Filatov: “I am coming back to CBJ in August. I have already spoken with GM. Haven’t talked to coach, but read he’s good w/young players.”
TSN: The Boston Bruins have granted Tim Thomas’ agent, Bill Zito, permission to talk to other teams about a possible trade.
Darren Dreger via Twitter: The Florida Panthers are willing to trade their recently acquired #15 overall pick, with the Edmonton Oilers showing interest.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: LeBrun spoke with LA Kings GM today and said the goalie Jonathan Quick is not available for trade.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: It’s looking like Lightning goalie, Antero Niittymaki, will be going to the open market.
Jim Kerr AM 880 Calgary: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini hopes to deal Sheldon Souray by Saturday, with Dallas and NY Rangers as possible teams interested.
TSN: The Montreal Canadiens have sent qualifying offers to Carey Price, Maxim Lapierre, Tom Pyatt, Mathieu Carle, and Sergei Kostitsyn. Benoit Pouliot was not qualified today, they have until the 28th to qualify him. Some people thought that the Canadiens would not qualify Kostitsyn and just let him walk, but I guess they want to hold on to his rights if he bolts for the KHL, or try to trade him so they don’t lose him for nothing.
More on the Canadiens … Ryan and Ducks talking … Marleau to Toronto? Jacob Markstrom coming to North America?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 26th, 2010
- Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: The Montreal Canadiens will have $13-14 million to fill out 9 roster spots. That is not a lot play when players like Tomas Plekanec, Jaroslav Halak and/or Carey Price are due for raises, if they want to keep them. Gordon thinks Halak’s price could be in the $3.55 million range, similar to Kari Lehtonen. Halak doesn’t want to think hockey right now, saying he needs a vacation. GM Pierre Gauthier will consider all options involving both goalies, even if it won’t be popular with fans. Signing Dominic Moore could be a priority for the team. The Habs will probably look to deal Roman Hamrlik, and the Kostitsyn brothers this summer.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Bobby Ryan’s agent, Don Meehan, confirmed yesterday that he’s had recent talks with the Anaheim Ducks regarding a contract extension, and expects more meetings in the upcoming weeks. It doesn’t sound like a deal will happen soon, but both sides appear to want to get something worked out over the summer.
- Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail: Do Globe and Mail writers require a ‘comment quota’ they need to reach each month? The article title says it all “Marleau to Toronto makes sense” … It doesn’t make sense if Marleau wants to win a cup soon. Sure the Leafs would probably love to have this guy, but don’t count on it happening.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers GM Dale Tallon met with top goalie prospect Jacob Markstrom about coming over to North America next season. If/when he’s signed, they’d ideally like him to get some action in the AHL to get adjusted to the North American style of play. The Panthers still have Tomas Vokoun and Scott Clemmensen under contract, but if a taker could be found for Vokoun, I’d be surprised if they didn’t move him and have Markstrom battle for the #1 spot.
- Columbus Dispatch: One of the top candidates for the Columbus Blue Jackets head coach position, may also now be a top contender for the Tampa Bay Lightning position. Newly hired GM Steve Yzerman and Kevin Dineen have a strong friendship dating back years. The Blue Jackets are still waiting to meet with Guy Boucher of the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs, who play game 7 tonight.
Coyotes Staying in Phoenix? Sergei Kostitsyn done in Montreal … Flyers free agents
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 8th, 2010
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Sources have told ESPN Friday night that the Ice Edge Holdings group and city of Glendale are going to sign a letter of exclusivity on Monday, as they’ve agreed on all points on in a new lease agreement. The memorandum won’t be officially submitted to the city for voting until the city and NHL come to agreement on several points, which will be discussed on Tuesday. The NHL wants the city to cover the operating losses for the team if an owner is not found by next year, which could be in the $20-30 million range. If all goes well, it could still take 4-8 weeks before a deal could be finalized. Check out yesterday’s post on Coyotes situation for some more background on what’s been happening.
- Bob McKenzie of TSN: Sergei Kostitsyn has worn out his welcome in Montreal. The players, coaches and managment have about had it with him. He’s a skilled player and could help them out now, but he’s got a bad work ethic and a terrible attitude. Players may be wanting to send him away right away, but coaches and managment are trying to keep this distraction to a minimum.
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: Gormley looks at the Flyers free agent situation this summer. Aaron Asham, Michael Leighton and Lukas Krajicek have all stated they’d like to return, but no word yet from management if there is an interest in bringing them back. Ray Emery isn’t expected to get a contract offer. The Flyers will most likely send qualifying offers to RFAs Daniel Carcillo, Darroll Powe, Braydon Coburn, and Ryan Parent.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres will be looking for a backup goalie this summer. Patrick Lalime is an option, but I doubt it, they didn’t seem to trust him that much down the stretch to give Miller the time off that he needed. Martin Biron is probably the leading candidate, though they can’t really admit it as he’s still under contract with the Islanders. The Sabres could also go ‘in-house’ with the 21-year old Jhonas Enroth who’s been in the AHL the past 2 seasons.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Kirk Maltby’s final practice/game could be approaching. Currently he plans on training this summer like he’ll be returning, but he’s unsure if it will be with the Red Wings. The 37-year old is a UFA at seasons end, may not get a contract offer from the Wings, and may not see himself in another uniform.
Around the Boards: Sopel to Leafs? Mueller, Stajan, Kostityn’s on the Block?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 22nd, 2009
- Pierre LeBrun on the CBC Hotstove and ESPN:
- The Leafs and Blackhawks’ have reportedly been talking about Brent Sopel. Sopel is owed $2.5 million this year, and $2.0 million next season. For taking Sopel in a salary cap dump, the Leafs would also receive a high pick, maybe in the 2nd round range. The ‘Hawks are obviously talking to other teams as well.
- Bobby Ryan had rejected a 3 year deal earlier this year, and talks won’t resume until after the season.
- Peter Mueller doesn’t appear to be working out in coach Tippett’s books, and other GM’s are calling.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Bob Gainey is still shopping around Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn, and the Oilers might still be interested. Shawn Horcoff might be available but he’s making a good chuck of change at $5.5 million.
- The Anaheim Ducks might be looking to shed Joffrey Lupul and his $4.25 cap hit through 2013. That might not be an easy thing to do.
- Ilya Kovalchuk’s talks continue and it’s likely more than 10 years at around $9 million a season. Also:
The belief is Kovalchuk doesn’t want the pressure of playing in the scrutiny of a market where he’s going to face questions. Not only have the Thrashers tried to put together a playoff contender this season, Kovalchuk had input on some of the roster decisions that were made.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Even though the Maple Leafs finally won a game, trade or demotion speculation will still follow the team. There reportedly has been some interest in Matt Stajan. Only 5 forwards are under contract for next season (Kessel, Blake, Hagman, Grabovski, and Orr).
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Trade rumors of the Canadiens sending Sergei Kostitsyn to the Oilers for Andrew Cogliano.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Columbus has received 1 trade offer for Nikita Filatov, but GM Scott Howson said he’s not looking to trade him.
Around the Boards: Savard extension soon, Rangers-Habs talking? Keith odd man out?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 16th, 2009
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Bruins and Marc Savard are getting closer on a long term extension, in the $6-6.5 million range for 4 or 5 seasons.
- Stephan Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins are getting healthier, with Milan Lucic expected to return this week, and Marc Savard could be back next week.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Jonas Gustavsson will be an RFA at the end of the season, and there might be teams that would sign him to a $5 million offer sheet. Burke can’t negotiate with ‘The Monster’ until January.
- The Predators are trying to unload RWer Ryan Jones and his $975,000 contract.
- The Rangers and Canadiens have had talks involving Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn.
- The Oilers have inquired about Sergei Kostitsyn, a junior linemate of Sam Gagne.
- The Islanders will most likely trade Martin Biron once Rick DiPietro returns. The Kings or Sabres are possible destinations. I’d also think the Wings might be monitoring his play.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Hearld: The Blackhawks could be looking to trade for a 2nd line center to replace the injured David Bolland (out 3-4 months with back injury). Patrick Sharp could be moved into that role if a trade can’t be worked out. Hurricanes’ Matt Cullen and his $2.875 cap hit might be a fit if Bolland was placed on LTIR.
- Jay Zawaski of Chicago Now: With Toews and Kane possibly close to signing contract extensions; if they sign with a hometown discount, they might be able to keep Duncan Keith. If they re-sign for fair market value, Keith is probably gone.
Around the Boards: Thurs. Oct. 22nd
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 22nd, 2009
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Hockey Night in Canada is considering removing the Toronto Maple Leafs from it’s national coverage on Saturday nights. It wouldn’t happen for at least a couple weeks since the Leafs play Canadian teams. Those in the Ontario region would still be subject to the pain.
- Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail: In other HNIC news, Al Strachan will no longer appear in the 2nd intermission show, “The Hotstove”. CBC is also not happy with the cover of Strachan’s best seller book about the Maple Leafs, as he used the HNIC logo without their permission.
- Elliotte Friedman on CBCsports.ca: With cap issues in Boston, Savard could end up in Toronto next season. Friedman also mentions, “enough with the Kovalchuk-to-Boston rumours, for now.” Not sure what that one was.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: It appears Sergei Kostitsyn is back with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs after being suspended for the 2nd time by the Canadiens. Kostitsyn packed up after Tuesday’s game and reportedly gave the ultimatum that he’d leave for the KHL if he wasn’t traded. Gainey has said a trade is possible, but so is a return to Montreal.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sergei Gonchar could miss up to 6 weeks with a broken left wrist. The Pens are off to a great start and will miss Gonchar, but they will be okay without him, as they were for most of last season.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza has an undisclosed nagging injury that might cost him a couple games. He left yesterday’s practice early and is listed as ‘probable’ for tonight’s game.
- Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel: Dmitry Kulikov could be the next 2009 draft pick to stick with the big club. The Panthers have 2 more games to decide if they are going to send him back to the QMJHL or keep him in the NHL. Kulikov was drafted #14 by the Panthers last year.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Jonathan Toews was hammered with an open-ice hit from Willie Mitchell, and left the game. First thought is that it’s most likely a concussion, though for the NHL’s sake, we’ll call it an ‘upper body injury’. Toews will be re-evaluated today.
Trade Rumors involving the Montreal Canadiens

I don’t know if there is any truth to these as it’s coming from a ‘source’, but it’s worth posting. I’ve never heard of this site before, but they’re mentioning several rumors involving the Montreal Canadiens. Maybe this is the French Anonymous Blogger.
Canadiens send Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec, and a 2nd round pick to the Predators for Jason Arnott and Teemu Laakso.
Canadiens send Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec, and Jaroslav Halak to the Coyotes for Adrian Aucoin, Keith Yandle and a 1st round pick.
Canadiens send Sergei Kostitsyn and Glen Metropolit to the Devils for Cory Murphy and Colin White
