- Craig Custance of ESPN: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman would love to find a trading partner.
“There’s a lot of guys looking for players and not a lot willing to part with players,” he said during a Tuesday phone conversation. “I don’t know if it’s going to change a ton the next couple weeks.”
The Lightning and Islanders aren’t ready to be sellers just yet.
“Teams that are out of it are looking more towards the future,” Bowman said. “If that’s the case, there’s nothing you can do. Those teams are looking at the summer and going, ‘You know what? Why are we going to trade him away?’”
If the right center was made available, they would be interested despite recently acquiring Brendan Morrison. They will target defensemen. Canadiens Hal Gill would be an option.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks the Blackhawks could end up trading for Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov to become their starter.
- Corey Masisak of NHL.com: The Sharks might be looking for a 3rd line energy guy who can kill penalties. They could deal Antero Niittymaki, but they won’t get much return for him. The Kings will be looking to add scoring. They have Jonathan Bernier to trade, but they’ll want a big return for him. The Coyotes could use some scoring up front. If they become sellers, they have Ray Whitney and Daymond Langkow to move. If the Stars are buyers, they could use a top 6 forward. If they become sellers they may look to move Nicklas Grossman and/or Sheldon Souray. If the Ducks won’t make Teemu Selanne or Saku Koivu available, they could consider moving any of Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan and Lubomir Visnovsky.
- Dave Lozo of NHL.com: The Red Wings have room to take on $24 million in cap space. Travis Moen and Ales Hemsky could be options.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: It’s unclear if the Flyers and defenseman Matt Carle have held serious contract talks. Carle will be a UFA and there is belief that he could get a deal similar to James Wisniewski’s 6 years, $33 million on the open market.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu practiced yesterday and could return tonight. Coach Mike Yeo on a possible trade:
“The one thing our entire team needs right now is just to go out on the ice with the idea that we’re good enough because we are. Obviously, if we can do things to make our team better I know there’s not a GM in the league who’s working harder than Chuck [Fletcher] on this. But having said that, we’ve beaten all the good teams in the West. We’ve proven ourself. When we play our game, we’ve proven what we can do.”
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Andy MacDonald should be back either Sunday or Tuesday. Alex Steen hasn’t skated this week, so his return is unknown.
- Eric Francis via twitter: Francis thinks the Flames can’t afford NOT to re-sign center Olli Jokinen.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets signed Vinny Prospal to a 1 year contract extension worth $2.5 million. He also got a no-trade clause.

- Craig Custance of ESPN: Custance ranks trade deadline bubble teams who will have a crucial next 10 days. 1. Tampa Bay – Dominic Moore and Ryan Malone could come up in talks. 2. Montreal – Travis Moen, Hal Gill, Chris Campoli and Andrei Kostitsyn are trade possibilities 3. Dallas – Brenden Morrow and Sheldon Souray could come up. 4. Phoenix – Shane Doan, Daymond Langkow, Adrian Aucoin and Ray Whitney will be free agents 5. Anaheim – Bobby Ryan, Jason Blake and Teemu Selanne could find themselves on the move if the Ducks will be sellers.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Since Tom Gaglardi bought the Stars, GM Joe Nieuwendyk is finding things a little easier:
“What I’m finding now is I can get in on more conversations and at least test the waters more, and we’re doing that,” Nieuwendyk said. “We’re asking and we’re listening, and we’re trying to make sure of every opportunity that’s out there. Then, it’s up to us to make smart decisions.”

- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: The Blackhawks are letting everyone know what they would like to trade for. A defenseman for their 2nd pairing, and a veteran forward, preferably a 2nd line center. The Hawks haven’t talked to the Ducks who floated their big 3 and Francois Beauchemin earlier this month. In the Western Conference, only the Ducks, Oilers and Blue Jackets could be sellers so far. It would take a significant piece for Oilers Sam Gagner. In the Eastern Conference, the Sabres, Canadiens, NY Islanders, Lightning, Hurricanes and maybe the Jets could be sellers. The Sabres have Derek Roy, Drew Stafford and Brad Boyes but their price could be high. They should at least call about Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu of the Hurricanes. Untouchable prospects could be Dylan Olsen, Kevin Hayes and Brandon Saad. Brandon Pirri, Jeremy Morin, Shawn Lalonde and Brian Connelly could interest some teams.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (mailbag) If the Stars don’t sign Nicklas Grossman to a contract extension, they could trade him by the deadline. As for anyone else, that would depend on whether their buyers or sellers. If they are sellers, there should be some interest in Brenden Morrow, Sheldon Souray, Mark Fistric and Grossman. If they are in a playoff at the deadlines, would have to think they are buyers.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a blood clot in his lower left leg. He’s been bothered by a sore leg and an MRI yesterday revealed.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian could be ready to return tomorrow night. He’s missed 5 consecutive games with a lower-body injury.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster confirms that recently acquired goalie Karri Ramo has 1 year left on his KHL contract.
- Roger Millions via twitter: Jay Feaster confirms that they are considering signing Krys Kolanos to a 2 way deal.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: On Sidney Crosby rumors that his season or career could be over.
“Sidney is doing very well, he’s training, he’s going in the right direction,” agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports told ESPN.com Friday. “The idea of retiring or shutting him down is not even in our vocabulary. Far from that.”
“Absolutely zero truth to these rumors,” added Penguins general manager Ray Shero to ESPN.com on Friday.
Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke tries to make a trade splash in January, well in advance of the trade deadline.
“We are listening to a lot right now and there is a good chance something will happen but I don’t think it’s going to happen today or tomorrow,” Burke said. “This is like hunting. Sometimes when you’re hunting, you get a feeling you’re going to stumble on something, or birds are coming in and you get a sixth sense something is about to happen. I don’t sense that here right now. We’re talking to a lot of teams about a number of things — mostly we’re listening because we like our group — but I can’t sense if something is imminent or not. Right now I’d say it’s not.”
Burke would like to add some size upfront, and they are not talking to anyone right now about adding a goaltender.
Lightning GM Steve Yzerman may have to wait until the offseason to get a young starting goalie and a top 4 defenseman.
“I think I look at both, short-term and big picture,” Yzerman said. “I’m not going to do something out of desperation that’s going to hurt us in the long run, by trading draft picks and a good prospect or something like that. Any deal has got to make sense for us long term. So that makes it tricky.”
Ducks GM Bob Murray:
“What I said is what I said, right now I’m listening to everything,” Murray told ESPN.com. “It would be very difficult to make the type of deals I want, but I’m listening for sure. I still think we have a decent core here, but we’re maybe going to have to change a piece or two.”
“But sometimes blockbusters happen at the trade deadline, you never know,” Murray said.
Blackhawks GM Stean Bowman has been looking for a deal for awhile. He’d like to acquire a 4-5 defenseman and a center that could play in the top 6.
“Ideally, I’d like to find a center man,” Bowman said. “It doesn’t have to be a top center man, but somebody that can play and complement top players.”
- Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca: Kypreos thinks that Sidney Crosby’s season is over based on his long-term health and the potential of a new contract. Crosby has one more year on his deal and can begin negotiations on July 1st. Crosby’s career could be in jeopardy with another concussion, and the next contract won’t come with an insurance policy that covers the Penguins from a career ending concussion. If Crosby is a “Penguin for Life,” the Penguins would be on the hook for the full amount, which could be as much as 10 years, $100 million.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: According to someone close to the Penguins, Sidney Crosby is doing better and is training. His goal is to back this season, though the timeline is still unclear.
- Scott MacArthur via twitter: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson expects Dion Phaneuf to play tomorrow. No break after taking puck in the face. Colby Armstrong suffered a setback on his concussion recovery and needs a few days away from the rink. - Michael Russo via twitter: Russo is hearing that the Panthers could be signing John Madden tomorrow. George Richards via twitter: Panthers say a John Madden announcement is not forthcoming. Panthers assistant coach Craig Ramsay said that Madden will really help the Panthers with face-offs and other intangibles. Panthers GM Dale Tallon said they are talking with John Madden but nothing has happened yet. Tallon on Madden: “We don’t know how long that’s going to take [to get rust off] and when we’re getting some other guys back.”
- Josh Rimer via twitter: “I will once again say that Eric Staal is NOT being Traded. He is the Franchise!”

- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers winger Ales Hemsky will be a UFA at the end of the season, but is struggling offensively (3 goals and 8 assists). It may be time for a change of scenery for Hemsky. Teams will be calling. The Red Wings, Predators, Penguins and Rangers could be interested. Teams will be calling the Ducks about Teemu Selanne, but Matheson could only see Selanne agreeing to play in Winnipeg if the Jets are in the hunt. Matheson wonders if the Oilers would go to Ryan Smyth to see if he’d want to play for a contender this year? “Absolutely, and, if the Oilers frame it right, they can assure No. 94, who should probably have his number retired here one day, that they’ll re-sign him after July 1 so he’ll have the best of both worlds.”

“I got fired by Bob (Gainey), and Pierre Gauthier was there, so I don’t know what Geoff would do,” Carbonneau said. “I loved what I did when I was in Montreal, I enjoyed everything that was around it, even if it was hard . . . I think there’s nothing that’s ever easy. But I definitely want to go back behind a (NHL) bench, and I think Montreal is a great place for that.”

- Vancouver Province: (Editorial, no name attached) The mystery writer suggests the Canucks trade Roberto Luongo straight up for Vincent Lecavalier. Luongo signed a 12 year, $64 million deal in 2009. Lecavalier is on a 11 year, $85 million deal. The Lightning need goaltending and the Canucks need a power forward.
- Rob Rossi and Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins GM Ray Shero said there is no rush for them to sign winger James Neal to a contract extension.
“We’ll likely wait a little bit,” Shero said of potential extension talks with Neal’s agent, Pat Morris. “He has an agent I’ve dealt with well over the years. When the time comes, we’ll get something done. There’s no doubt in that.”
There have been no talks so far. Neal has a cap hit of $2.875 million. Sidney Crosby skated yesterday but remains uncertain when he’ll return.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are off to a disappointing 0-5-1 start, partly due to injuries and suspension. Team president Mike Priest have GM Scott Howson and coach Scott Arniel a vote of confidence. James Wisniewski is suspended. Kristian Huselius is out for another month or 2. Jared Boll and his broken thumb are a month away. Jeff Carter is out indefinitely with a broken foot.
- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have shown interest in hosting the 2014 Heritage Classic.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson missed last night’s game due to soreness from an off-season hernia/abductor surgery.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avalanche winger Peter Mueller has been ruled out for Saturday’s game with a head injury. He’s missed the last 3 games. “He’s not feeling well,” Sacco said. “After (Wednesday’s) practice he notified us he wasn’t feeling well. When we get back from our game in Chicago, we’ll see how he is the next day.” Mueller missed last season with post-concussion symptoms.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Colby Armstrong is out with a sprained ankle. There is no timetable, but looking at weeks and not months.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Nolan Baumgartner (Van) and Scott Jackson (TB) were put on waivers yesterday. Ivanans (CGY) and Bagnall (MIN) cleared waivers. Baumgartner was on the IR and is healthy, needs to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL.

- Erik Erendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina has been declared concussion free and is ready for the start of training camp. Kubina wants to see a standard established for headshots and not on a case-by-case basis.
“You know, the headshots, it’s always going to happen in hockey,” said Kubina, who received a three-game suspension in March for an inadvertent elbow to Chicago’s Dave Bolland. “I would just like to see that if you hit somebody in the head, whether it’s accidental or not, it should be the same for everybody, whatever it is, three games, five games, 10 games, it’s up to the league. It can’t be like before where some guys don’t get anything while some guys a few games here or a few games there.
“If you elbow somebody in the head, it should be the same for everyone, that’s how I feel.”
- Ross Romaniuk and Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Dustin Byfuglien’s lawyer said that he passed a breathalyser test after he was arrested in Minnesota on suspected drunk boating. Byfuglien didn’t feel it was necessary to submit a urine sample after he passed the breathalyser. His blood-alcohol test registered 0.03%, 0.08% is the legal limit.
- Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have invited goalie David Aebischer, and forwards Troy Bodie, David Koci and Janne Pesonen to training camp on a pro tryout.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: A source is saying that Calgary businessman Max Chambers has been in discussions with the St. Louis Blues ownership about purchasing the team. Chambers at one point was interested in the Coyotes. Bryan Trottier is the one of the front man in Chambers’ group. Chambers entered as a potential owner “last few weeks,” the source said, and he has “all the financing in place that would allow him to proceed quickly.” The firm conducting the sale, Game Plan LLC, has indicated that it is possible that the sale could be done by the start of the season. They have been trying to sell the team since last March.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said that he wanted to bring in defenseman Sheldon Souray before signing him on July 1st but he couldn’t afford it until he was bought out by the Oilers.
- Todd Cordell via twitter: Cordell makes note that CSNNE is reporting that Bruins forward Nathan Horton is symptom free from his concussion and is ready for the season.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Ryan Whitney (ankle) and Ales Hemsky (shoulder) are still recovering from their surgeries and may not play in the Oilers early exhibition games.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: After being bought out by the Devils in early August, Trent Hunter may be heading to the LA Kings camp on a tryout.

A quiet Leafs summer … Hulsizer candidate to by Blues … Possible retirees this year and next

- George Popalis of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs have been quiet this summer with regards to the free agent market, not doing anything since Tim Connolly, and it’s probably a good thing. Over paying for someone and talking away a roster spot for a someone in their young core may not be the best for the team. Nazem Kadri, Joe Colborne, Luca Caputi, Matt Frattin, Jerry D’Amigo, Jake Gardiner and Jesse Blacker are all in their early 20′s and deserve a good look at camp.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Matthew Hulsizer is one of the candidates attempting to buy the St. Louis Blues. It’s expected that Hulsizer will submit a bid to buy the Blues. The deadline to submit a bid is today. Current minority owner Tom Stillman is also expected to make a bid.
- Lyle Richardson of Spector’s Hockey: Spector lists some players who could retire this year or next: Teemu Selanne, Mike Modano, Cory Stillman, Marty Turco, John Madden, Sergei Samsonov, Mike Grier. Possible candidates for retiring next summer: Martin Brodeur, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sheldon Souray, Jason Blake, Saku Koivu, Sean Avery, Jaroslav Spacek, Filip Kuba, Willie Mitchell, Jaromir Jagr, Ray Whitney and Steve Sullivan.

- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein is hearing $5.7 million per for 5 years for Drew Doughty.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: A member of the Colorado organization tells Strickland there is “No chance” that they trade Paul Stastny.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets are expected to send qualifying offers to Andrew Ladd, Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler, Ben Maxwell and Anthony Stewart. Rob Schremp and Brett Festerling likely won’t get one.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini on Sheldon Souray, “I’ve had discussions with most teams but haven’t been able to do anything with Sheldon at this time.” Tambellini could buy him out by July 1st. The Oilers had offers for the 31st overall pick yesterday where they would move back and get an extra pick but decided against it and drafted David Musil.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: With the trading of defenseman Brian Campbell, it opens up a bigger role for Nick Leddy, and more likely that they will re-sign Chris Campoli.
- Adam Jahn of the Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Sharp has 1 year left at $3.9 million, and GM Stan Bowman said he’ll start contract extension talks this summer. It took some convincing from Panthers GM Dale Tallon to get Brian Campbell to waive his limited NTC. ‘‘He’s willing to come down and help turn our franchise around, and that speaks volumes,’’ Tallon said.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Penguins GM Ray Shero, “I expect Max Talbot to hit the market. I wish him the best and he will never be forgotten in Pittsburgh.”
- Helene Elliot of the LA Times: Kings GM Dean Lombardi on the Ryan Smyth trade saga,
“It makes no sense for me to lose this player and lose the flexibility I need to replace him. And that’s where it broke down,” Lombardi said Saturday after the NHL entry draft in St. Paul, Minn.
“Once it was very clear I couldn’t do what I needed to do with the player I’m taking back, then it’s not what the deal was based upon by any stretch of the imagination and it certainly doesn’t make any sense for me.”
Lombardi said he talked to another team — believed to be the Calgary Flames — but said that team has “issues that aren’t related to us agreeing on compensation.” He added, “I’m being penalized enough and that’s not anybody’s fault that I’m losing this player. I’m not going to pay another penalty and not be able to go out and at least try to get a player of his caliber.”
