Smith gets pre-season plus 5 games … Radulov leaves KHL team … Bruins after Whitney … Sharp skates … Staios signs with Isles
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Suspensions on September 30th, 2011
- NHL: Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith has been suspended for the rest of the pre-season and 5 regular season games. He will forfeit $23,648.65. Shanahan’s video at bottom of the post.
- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Chesnokov reported this morning that Alexander Radulov was unhappy with the coaches and management of Salavat Yulaev. He posted on twitter to Evgeni Malkin that translates to:
“Mal [addressing Malkin], the coach is [getting on my nerves — the real word used is not for this blog], I am asking for a trade.”
Radulov later deleted the tweet, but screen shots were captured and can be seen at the above link. Radulov isn’t on Salavat’s roster today. One person told Chesnokov that the chances of Radulov heading back to the NHL this season increased from 5% to 10%.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: From RIAN news agency, Radulov ”packed up his stuff and left Salavat after this morning’s practice.” Slava Malamud via twitter: It’s not a secret that Radulov wants to play with SKA St. Petersburg. If he ends up there, the odds of him returning to the NHL deminish. Vtiyaz may be trying to acquire Radulov, but it is unlikely. Chesnokov says that some of the Radulov speculations are ridiculous, and that he’ll most likely end up with SKA. KHL/Medvedev won’t let him go. Malamud says that Radulov isn’t heading to the Predators this year, and nobody knows about next year, not even Radulov.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: “Lingering chatter” that the Bruins could be going after Ray Whitney and his $3 million price tag.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp is skating with teammates today, first time since his emergency appendectomy.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Steve Staios signed a 1 year contract with the Islanders with a base salary of $800,000, bonuses up to $1.2 million, and up to $1.6 million if they win the cup.
- Rich Hammond via twitter: Drew Doughty said he wouldn’t have a problem playing in Saturday’s pre-season game if asked.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins forward Steve Sullivan should in the lineup for the Pens.
Drew Doughty may have concussion? Gretzky not going to KHL … Canucks keeping all Dmen? Lupul skating
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 21st, 2010
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty suffered an upper-body injury in the 1st period of last night’s game. He played almost 7 minutes in the 1st period, was on the last in the final minute, but didn’t return for the 2nd. Helene Elliott says that the upper-body injury could be a possible concussion from a hit by Hurricanes forward, Eric Cole. JP Hoornstra reports that Doughty won’t accompany the team to Phoenix for tonight’s game. The NHL could review the hit as it might have been from the blind-side, and a little late.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The reports coming out of Russia that Wayne Gretzky could be the next coach of SKA are not true. Gretzky sent LeBrun a text saying he’s not going to Russia to coach.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Kevin Bieksa had been on the rumor trade block for most of the summer, and it’s still possible that he could be moved once Sami Salo comes back, but … “We went into last year with nine defensemen, and at the end of the season, we didn’t have enough,” Gillis told ESPN.com in late September. “There’s a lot of time, and a lot of things can happen between now and when Sami is able to return.” Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis are both out and have missed 6 games combined.
- Eric Stephen via twitter: Anaheim Ducks forward Joffrey Lupul has begun light skating. He still has a long ways to go before he can return to game action.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Owen Nolan had been skating in San Jose, but now he’s headed to Switzerland to join Zurich. Nolan is going to show people that he can still play, and hopes to get a call from the NHL.
- Tom Reed and Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Blue Jackets: Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ethan Moreau suffered a broken hand when he blocked a shot from Paul Mara in the 2nd period last night. Mike Commodore’s left thumb is sprained and not broken as the fracture revealed in last week’s x-ray was an old one. He has been placed on the IR retroactive to Oct. 16th. Winger Jared Boll is at least a week away as he slowly recovers from back spasms.
Nabokov going to Russia … Zherdev signing with the Flyers? No comment for Kovalchuk agent
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 7th, 2010
4:37 PM:
Helene Elliott via Twitter: “Kings believed to have gotten a proposal from Kovalchuk, but nothing has been settled and no response is imminent.”
4:20 PM:
Aaron Portzline via Twitter: Flyers and Zherdev deal could be finalized tonight.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Joe Corvo and the Carolina Hurricanes reach a 2 year deal worth $4.5 million.
1:40 PM:
Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Evgeni Nabokov signs with the SKA St. Peterburgh.
Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Nikolai Zherdev may be signing with the Philadelphia Flyers according to reports from Russia.
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Kovalchuk’s agent, Jay Grossman, would not comment on the talks with the LA Kings. Maple Leafs still searching for a top 6 forward. “We continue to listen on Kaberle and to explore other trade opportunities,” Leafs GM Brian Burke told ESPN.com via e-mail. If they don’t get a top 6 forward, they’ll keep Kaberle. Nabokov is close to signing with SKA. Paul Kariya still wants to play and will wait for a good fit. The Montreal Canadiens and Carey Price have had talks, but no serious progress has been made, there is no rush to get a deal done. Buffalo Sabres have signed Rob Niedermayer.
Kovalchuk and the Devils … Modano, Wings or retirement … Family concerns for Nabokov
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on July 7th, 2010
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Nothing much has changed with Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils the past couple days. They are still considered the leading NHL candidate (maybe the only NHL candidate) to sign the Russian super-star. One thing that might be holding this up is that the Devils need to shed some salary before they can sign him, possibly as much as $6 million. The Devils have 8 players that have no-trade/no-movement clauses. Bryce Salvador ($2.9 million) and Dainius Zubrus ($3.4 million) are the most likely candidates. The Devils could sign now, and would have all summer to shed the excess salary (teams are allowed to 10% over the salary cap during the summer, but have to be under by day 1 of the regular season).
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Bill Guerin is still hoping to play next season. He’s had ‘minimal discussions’ with the Penguins and a few other teams. The Penguins are considering moving Malkin or Staal to the wing, and using a young winger or bringing back Guerin for the 3rd line. Everything still status quo on Kovalchuk according to Lou Lamoriello. The Anaheim Ducks are going to sit back on the Bobby Ryan front after he turned down a 5 year $25 million deal, and a 4 year $18.4 million deal. The Ducks are ready to wait and see if a team sends him an offer sheet, then decide to match it or take the compensation. See – Compensation for signing a RFA. Maxim Afinogenov is the 2nd highest UFA scorer, but still remains unsigned. John Madden is still available and not going to rush things, wants to make sure it’s a good fit.
- Jeremy Rutherford via Twitter: If New Jersey is looking to make some trades to sign Kovalchuk, he’s sure the Blues are looking into it. However, neither team is looking to take on salary.
- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Mike Modano has said it will be the Detroit Red Wings or retirement.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Next set of negotiations for Evgeni Nabokov and SKA St. Petersburg is set for today. His concerns aren’t about money but over his family.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Former Wild Kim Johnsson is contemplating retirement due to concussions. Johnsson received a concussion with the Blackhawk that ended his season in March, is still suffering symptoms, and has no “immediate plans to play” according to his agent. Pierre-Marc Bouchard is exercising at a slow, easy pace in hope of being ready for training camp. Russo thinks the Wild will add another defenseman, and he wouldn’t be surprised if the Wild make a big trade.
- Chip Alexander via Twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford has said they are considering 2 options: 1. Signing a Top 4 defenseman and allowing Jamie McBain to “ease into things” or option #2 having McBain as a Top 4 defenseman and re-signing Brett Carson or Alexander Picard. Re-signing Brian Pothier is an “outside possibility” but isn’t being ruled out.
Are the Kings interested in Gagne and others? Modano has 4 options … Not much going on for Frolov
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 6th, 2010
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: One report is saying the Los Angeles Kings are out of the running for Simon Gagne, and another says they are still interested. Things were quiet involving Tomas Kaberle over the weekend, but should pick up this week.
Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Elliott wonders how the Kings can become more attractive to free agents. Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson and Wayne Simmonds will be free agents soon, and will they want to re-sign with a team that can’t draw top free agents? The Kings may have to go the trade route to fill some holes in their roster. If the Devils sign Kovalchuk, they’ll have to clear out some salary. Brian Rolston could be available, but he’s 37 and has a $5.062 cap hit. Tomas Kaberle is an option but the Leafs probably want prospects and picks (nope … they’d like a top 6 forward, maybe a Wayne Simmonds or Dustin Brown). The Kings like Simon Gagne, and the Flames may deal Robyn Regehr. Marc Savard could fit but the Kings may not be on the 5 team list Savard has.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Alexander Frolov hasn’t received much interest, other than the Rangers doing some brief tire kicking.
Jeremy Rutherford via Twitter: A “good-faith” move by Jaroslav Halak by not filing for salary arbitration.
Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Evgeni Nabokov couldn’t agree on a contract with SKA St. Petersburgh.
Ansar Khan of MLive: The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing 3 of their restricted free agents to 1 year contracts: Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller and Derek Meech. GM Ken Holland isn’t close to signing Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm, both could get long-term deals later on in the summer though.
John Shannon via Twitter: The Detroit Red Wings and 3 other teams are interested in Mike Modano.
David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune: Mike Modano hasn’t heard from the Chicago Blackhawks, but they could be an option for him as they are looking for some 3rd/4th line depth (cost friendly depth). “I’d like to see what kind of wiggle room they have left under the salary cap, if they can fill that third- or fourth-line void and see how I would fit in with those guys,” said Modano. “They have a great nucleus of kids. So there is a lot of interest there. Obviously, coming off the type of year they’ve had there’s a lot of excitement for anybody who has Chicago on their list of options.”
Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Blake Wheeler filed for arbitration yesterday, but Wheeler’s agent plans on working hard to get a deal done. They haven’t had much discussion with GM Peter Chiarelli as he’s been busy with the draft and free agency. Mark Stuart didn’t file for arbitration as he and Bruins are close to a 1-year extension. Boston re-signed both Nathan McIver and Nolan Schaefer.
Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski filed for salary arbitration yesterday, but after the meeting his agent and GM Bob Murray last week, they appear to be on the “same page”. More discussions should take place before their arbitration meeting which would be between July 20th and August 5th.
The Ilya Kovalchuk Update for Tuesday
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on July 6th, 2010
Well so much for Ilya Kovalchuk signing a deal by yesterday.
Jay Grossman via Twitter: Kovalchuk’s choices have been narrowed down, nothing finalized, but no announcement tonight (Monday night).
Tom Gulitti via Twitter: Heard that Atlanta could be back in on Kovalchuk. Not confirmed.
John Shannon via Twitter: Confirmations that Atlanta is not part of Kovalchuk options.
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Kovalchuk’s options appear to be the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and the SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. The Los Angeles Kings are completely out of the running. Lou Lamoriello may be feeling the pressure to win now as Martin Brodeur is 38-years old.
Kovalchuk offered $14 million per season? Flyers may not re-sign Leighten … Would the Bruins trade Bergeron?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on June 7th, 2010
- Sport-Express.ru: The SKA St. Petersburg reportedly have increased their offer to Ilya Kovalchuk to 3 years and $42 million. It was reported that they previously offered Kovalchuk 3 years and $30 million.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Despite helping take the Philadelphia Flyers to game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals (after filling in for Brian Boucher part way through the playoffs … and he may not get the game 6 start), it might not gaurantee that goalie Michael Leighton will re-sign with the Flyers. They may think he’s “a one-trick pony on a magical ride”, and look towards a Turco, Mason, Nabokov, Halak or Price.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: One option the Bruins have in their quest to find a scoring winger or two, is to consider trading Patrice Bergeron, especially if the Oilers draft Taylor Hall. If the Bruins were to trade him, they would still have a solid one-two punch of Marc Savard and David Krejci, and possibly Tyler Seguin down the middle. Bergeron is a UFA at the end of next season, and is making $4.25 next season, and would be looking for a raise. He has a no-trade clause that kicks in July 1st.
- TSN: Contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nikolai Kulemin have hit a wall. It was reported earlier that Kulemin is looking for at least $3 million per season deal. He recorded 36 points in 78 games last season. Burke told AM 640, “While they can say: ‘he was on your first line last year,’ there is no one who would say Nikolai Kulemin is a first line left winger. He’s a first line left winger by default because we did not have a very good team. I’m not paying for someone who gets the position by default.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Craig MacTavish and Mike Keenan appear to be out of the running for the head coaching vacancy in New Jersey. The leading candidates are John MacLean and Michel Therrien, other options are Ken Hitchcock, Kirk Muller, and Guy Boucher. Boucher was offered the coaching position in Columbus.
- Bob McKenzie of TSN: The Blue Jackets would like an answer from Guy Boucher if he wants the head coaching position by Tuesday.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Frolov get KHL Offers
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 28th, 2010
TSN.ca: According to a Russian website (Sovsports) , Ilya Kovalchuk as received a 3-year, $30 million contract offer from the SKA St Petersburg. Kovalchuk would like to stay in the NHL, and will wait to see all his options on July 1st.
The same Russian website is also reporting that SKA St Petersburgh has made an offer to Kings forward Alexander Frolov. Kings GM Dean Lombardi didn’t comment on the report, and was unsure if he could re-sign Frolov at the terms he is looking for. It’s not known what SKA offered Frolov.
Now, we all expected Kovalchuk and Frolov to get some offers from the KHL, but what surprised me was how little Kovalchuk’s offer was for. Don’t get me wrong, $10 million tax free a year is a ton of money, but for months its been mentioned that he could get upwards of $20 million a season. We know that some owners/league backers have a ton of money, but are they now realizing they don’t have as much clout as they thought they had? It’s been reported in the past that all players weren’t getting paid or not getting what they were promised. The once powerful Moscow Dynamo folded last month, and were the 2nd team in the last year to cease operations.
In the end, I see Kovalchuk staying in the NHL for around $8 million a season. It’s about $2 million less than what Atlanta was offering, but I think he wanted out. If he goes to a larger market, he will be able to easily make up the difference in endorsements.
