Kozlov to KHL … 3 NHL caliber goalies in SJ … Fehr wants $7.5 mill through 2012 … More on Staal, Savard and Maltby
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 3rd, 2010
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Slava Kozlov will be playing in the KHL this season, hasn’t decided on which team yet.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Fehr’s price tag for being the NHLPA executive director is $7.5 million through 2012, players start to “hmm and haw”.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks now have 3 NHL caliber goalies after signing Antti Niemi. Antero Niittymaki (signed this off-season for $2 million a year, 2 years) and Thomas Greiss were expected to battle for the starting position before the Niemi signing. Niittymaki doesn’t feel that concerned, but Greiss was more disappointed, as he’s probably the #3 goalie now. Greiss has talked to GM Doug Wilson about the situation, which might involve a change of scenery.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Antti Niemi’s agent said that he had “four or five offers” before he decided to sign with the Sharks.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal’s infection in his right foot will keep him out for the beginning of training camp, the team is hopeful he’ll be ready for their Oct. 7th season opener.
- Steve Zipay of Newsday: Speculation, not a rumor. The Bruins could send Marc Savard to the Rangers for possibly Matt Gilroy, Sean Avery and a 2nd round pick.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland met with Kirk Maltby on Wednesday, and is waiting to hear back from him. Maltby would have to earn a spot on the roster, and it might take an injury or 2 to get a spot.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: RFA Chris Stewart signed a 2 year contract worth $5.75 million, $2.5 million this year, $3.25 million next year. Peter Mueller still remains unsigned by the Avalanche. The Avs currently sit $950,000 below the cap floor.
Audio on Kaberle … Free agent news from around the league
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 16th, 2010
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The idea the the St. Louis Blues were going to trade David Backes was laughable.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Blues had said for weeks that Kaberle never made sense since he could walk away at the end of the year.
- Steve Simmons via twitter: Kaberle was willing to sign a long term contract if he was traded to a city he liked, but no one asked.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Responding to Simmons …. Only if right city. Kaberle’s agent has said of his desire to stay in the Eastern Conference.
- Damien Cox on the Fan 590: Audio on the non-trade and what the future holds for the Leafs.
- Doug MacLean on the Fan 590: Audio, talking Leafs and the non-trade of Kaberle.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Some agents are saying that many of the established veterans may not be signing anywhere until mid-to-late September. Teams are looking for younger, cheaper 3rd-4th liners. They don’t have any cap space, but the Bruins are looking at veteran free agent wingers. They’re keeping in touch with Bill Guerin and Miro Satan. Raffi Torres has drawn minimal interest and may have to settle for a 1 year deal around $800,000 to low $1 million. Willie Mitchell in talks with 5 teams; Kings, Sharks, Lightning, Capitals and Canucks. The Anaheim Ducks are looking for a defenseman before turning their attention to Paul Kariya. Ruslan Fedotenko has received an invite to Islanders training camp, the Wild may also be interested. Slava Kozlov wants to go to a contender but not getting a lot of interest, KHL is option but not being pursued at the moment. A couple of teams have called about Jeff Halpren, but he’s yet to receive an offer.
- Katie Strang of Newsday: The Islanders are not interested in Antti Niemi, disputing some reports.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Thinks the only logical spot for Niemi is San Joseba possibly the Capitals if they are not sold on their two young goalies.
Sharks interested in Niemi? Preds may not be talking to Theodore … Price-Canadiens talks are slow
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 5th, 2010
- Gary Peterson of the San Jose Mercury News: Could the San Jose Sharks be interested in Antti Niemi? The Sharks have about $4 million in cap space, with 2 goalies under contract. Are Antero Niittymaki (2 years and $4 million) and Thomas Greiss good enough to take the Sharks to the finals?
- Jim Diamond of National Predators Examiner: As of Tuesday night, Predators GM David Poile said he’s fine with heading in to the season with Pekka Rinne and any one of his 4 goalie prospects who have never played an NHL game. Poile didn’t rule out looking for a more experienced goalie. Though the odds of signing him aren’t good, Poile said of Niemi, “We could call and see what he would be interested in, if there would be a fit.” Poile said (as of Tuesday night) that he has not talked to Jose Theodore. (It was rumored on Tuesday that they were talking, 1 year, $1.5 million.) The Preds still have RFA’s Patric Hornqvist and Cody Franson that they want to sign. Those negotiations are still a work in progress, Poile will talk to their agents late this week or early next week.
- Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: Carey Price’s contact talks with the Canadiens are moving along at a slow pace, which is “relatively normal” according to his agent. The two sides are not close, but both sides are commited to getting a deal done. Price is looking for a short deal, a year or two.
- Randy Youngan of the OC Register: Ducks GM Bob Murray has been rebuilding their defense. The team was 29th in blocked shots and shots allowed. Four starters will be Visnovsky, Lydman, Sutton and Sheldon Brookbank. Murray hinted there could be another veteran Dman on the way. They have been rumored to be interested in Kevin Bieksa, and former Duck, Ruslan Salei wants to return. Murray did say they have 2 spots open for the young players.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Tim Thomas won’t get released by the Bruins, they’d like to trade him, might happen during the season.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Slava Kozlov is still hoping to play in the NHL, and is exploring options.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Former Oiler Ryan Potulny getting interest from the Blues and a few other teams.
5 teams interested in Bieksa … Johnson-Blues making progress … No progress on Wheeler
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 22nd, 2010
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks could now be targeting Canucks defenseman, Kevin Bieksa. The Kings, Sharks, Blue Jackets, and the Montreal Canadiens have also shown interest. If Bieksa doesn’t work out, they could also look at Edmonton’s Sheldon Souray, if they’d take Jason Blake’s contract back.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Passes on the rumor that Montreal Canadiens are interested in Kevin Bieksa, and that 2010 1st round pick Jarred Tinordi could be headed the other way. The Canucks like Tinordi, but I doubt the Canadiens would go for it.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Eric Johnson and the St. Louis Blues are getting closer on a contract extension, but there is still work to do.
- James Murphy special to ESPNBoston: Blake Wheeler’s arbitration date is set for July 27th, and there hasn’t been any progress in recent talks. The two sides will meet again this weekend.
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Slava Kozlov still hopes to play in the NHL next season, if not, he’ll head back to Russia.
- Ben Wright of Bluelandblog: The Atlanta Thrashers walked away from Clarke MacArthur’s $2.4 million arbitration ruling. They have 12 forwards locked up, with prospects looking to crack the lineup: Spencer Machacek, Patrice Cormier, Carl Klingberg and Alex Burmistrov.
No Recent Talks Between Ryan and Ducks Yet … Savard Passes Neuropsychological Test … Jagr Return? Lightning GM Search
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 21st, 2010
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: There has been no progress in contract negotiations between Bobby Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan’s agent hasn’t met with team since the end of the season, but believes the two sides will meet in upcoming weeks. Ryan finished 3rd in team scoring with 57 points, 35 were goals. The 23-year-old has scored 71 goals in the past 2 seasons, and will probably be getting a contract in the $5 million range. Corey Perry is on a 5-year contract paying him an average of $5.325 million a season, and I don’t see Ryan getting more than Perry.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Marc Savard cleared his second hurdle in his attempt to come back this season as he passed his neuropsychlogical test yesterday according to the team website. To be able to return to game action, he still needs to get clearance from his physician. Savard skated for 40 minutes yesterday.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton is back skating and taking some shots. He’s been battling a severe high ankle sprain since March 16th, and could be ready to go in 2 or 3 weeks. Leighton is an unrestricted free agent following the season, but his agent and Flyers GM Paul Holmgren haven’t had any talks yet.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Former Wild GM Doug Risebrough has been rumored as a potential candidate for the vacant Lightning GM job, has confirmed that he’d be interested in it. Tampa Bay has asked for permission from the NY Rangers to speak to him, he’s currently a scout/consultant for them.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: A reader asks Matheson if signing Jaromir Jagr would be a good move for the Oilers. Matheson puts odd are 60-40 that they sign him. The 38-year-old Jagr is also pushing Czech teammate Roman Cervenka as part of a ‘package’ deal. Cervenka is on the smaller side, and appeared over his head at the Olympics according to Matheson.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The leading candidate for the Columbus Blue Jackets head coaching position is Kevin Dineen. Dineen is the coach for the Buffalo Sabres AHL team, the Portland Pirates, who will be elminated from the post season soon. The Blue Jackets will need to get permission from Buffalo before they are able to talk to him.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Slava Kozlov has been contacted by 5 or 6 KHL teams about his possible return to Russia. Kozlov will wait until the NHL free agency period opens on July 1st before he decides his future.
Teemu Back? Kozlov Rips Coaches in Atlanta … Koivu Wants to Stay … Maple Leafs Coaches Safe
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 13th, 2010
- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: It’s sounding more and more like Teemu Selanne might return to the Ducks next season and put off retirement for atleast one more season.
•”If you had asked me two months ago, it would have been easy to think, ‘This is it.’ But the way we have played since then (23-14-4 in the second half), after I got healthy, it’s been so much fun.”• “Obviously, I’m going to have a lot of time to rest this summer. It’s disappointing, because we had way too good a team to miss the playoffs. But in some ways, the tank doesn’t feel even close to empty.”
•”I feel I can still play. I still have my speed and my strength – those are the skills that make me successful. If they weren’t good enough to play at this level, it would be easy to do something else.”
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Slava Kozlov had some parting shots at the Atlanta Thrashers, blaming the coaching staff for the team’s failure to make the playoffs, citing lack of preparation and poor systems. Kozlov was a healthy scratch for 26 of the teams final 31 games. Kozlov had only good things to say about his teammates and organization as a whole, only bashing the coaches. He has a list of 5 or 6 teams that he’d consider signing with this off-season, and if that doesn’t pan out, he’ll head back to Russia and the KHL.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Saku Koivu has said he’d like to remain in Anaheim, and hopes negotiations will start before July 1st, but realizes that management has lots to evaluate with the season just ending.
- Lance Horby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs assistant GM Dave Nonis has held some talks over the last 10 days with Jonas Gustavsson’s agent, Joe Resnick. Talks are moving forward on a multi-year deal.
- Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News: Cowlishaw has heard that players still don’t understand Marc Crawford’s system, even after playing in it for season. The Stars should bring back Lehtinen, but is a good time for Mike Modano to hang up the blades.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke has said that his coaching staff is safe, and all will be brought back for next year. Coach Ron Wilson will focus more on the sad Maple Leafs power play from the get go at training camp.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Matt Duchene was on the ice yesterday, and might be ready to go for Avalanche in their series opener on Wednesday. Duchene was wearing an extra chest pad, covering his sternum. He suffered a ‘torse injury’ on Saturday.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: It is unknown at this point if Ray Whitney and Rod Brind’Amour will be returning to the Hurricanes next season. Whitney is a UFA and might re-sign. Brind’Amour is still under contract for 1 year, but at 39, he might retire.
Other Fallouts from the Trade Deadline … Atlanta to Winnipeg, not now
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 5th, 2010
“You know where that money comes from?” one furious league executive asked. “It comes out of the owners’ pockets and they aren’t going to be happy with this because they’re already not happy with having to foot the bill for Phoenix in the first place.”
“I just don’t understand this,” said the executive. “I guess the belief is if the Coyotes can make a long playoff run, then they’ll be able to recoup some of the money for the NHL.”
