Trade groundwork has been laid … Time running short for Turris … Devils and Kings talking … Krejci odd man out … Filatov on his way out

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams are closing in on the point where they know what they have and what they may need. Blue GM Doug Armstrong:

“A lot of groundwork has been laid and (Tuesday) was more putting fertilizer on some of those seeds you planted to see what happens. You get more work done when you’re in the room with 30 people than trying to pick up the phone 30 different times.”

    Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster:

“We have a lot of work to do,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “We’re not happy where we are. We need to improve in a lot of areas. This isn’t acceptable to be where we are right now.”

The Hurricanes are 1-5-0 in their last 6 and are in need of a shakeup. The Islanders have dropped to last in the Eastern Conference. The Jets may be thinking long-term and have 2 UFA’s in Chris Mason and Johnny Oduya. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:

“I’m not a big believer on putting deadlines on anything,” he said. “You make decisions based on what the right timing is for you. The league puts a lot of deadlines on you for signing guys or trading deadlines, so you certainly have parameters. But I’m not going to put any deadlines on it.”

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The NHL board of governors will vote on realignment at the Dec. 5th-6th meetings. The Wings would like to move to the Eastern Conference, or at least play home-and-homes with the other Conference. Western Conference teams don’t want to see the Red Wings move to the East. Coyotes GM Don Maloney reiterated his stance with Kyle Turris.

“For the 15-hundredth time, we have no intention of trading him, regardless of the offer, at all whatsoever,” Maloney told ESPN.com.

Turris has 1 and 2 year offers from the Coyotes sitting on the table. The Blue Jackets have intensified their efforts to get a goalie. Antero Niittymaki won’t be back for another 3-4 weeks, but could be on the move at some point. Teams have inquired to see if he’s available.

  • The Fourth Period: The LA Kings and NJ Devils maybe talking trade, they are both scouting each other. The Devils have been interested in Jonathan Bernier in the past, but sources close to the Kings have said they are not interested in trading Bernier at this moment, unless blown away by an offer. The Devils may also be looking for some scoring help, but that help likely isn’t coming from the Kings, unless they are interested in Dustin Penner. Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson could be trade candidates as well.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson notes the Predators have positioned themselves well to retain both Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. They may be able to get Suter in the 7 years for $49 million range and Weber for 6 or 5 years at $7.5 million. Matheson doesn’t see them trading either defenseman and wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander Radulov returns to Nashville next season. Matheson also thinks that if Linus Omark isn’t called up in the next month, he’ll head back to Europe.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks that David Krejci could be the odd guy out in Boston with Bergeron and Seguin down the middle. The Bruins aren’t sure he’s a $5 million a year guy.
  • Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has said again that he is not interested in Marty Turco. Names on Burke’s radar could be Scott Clemmensen (FLA), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI) and Antero Niittymaki (SJ). Saturday will mark 4 weeks since James Reimer has hit by Brian Gionta. Ben Scrivens will start tonight, marking his 6th start in the last 7 games.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein wonders if it’s time for the Trent Hunter experiment in LA to end, and to bring up a young speedy forward.
  • Tim Sassone via twitter: If Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz is sent to the minors, they’ll have $6.95 million in cap space. Plenty of room for a center and/or a power play QB.

Turris asks for trade … Reimer has concussion according to the Monster … Gudbranson stays … Regin out 6-8 weeks

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Kyle Turris’ agent, Kurt Overhardt, confirms that Turris has asked Coyotes for a trade.

“This has never been about money, we’ve been upfront with the club from Day 1,” Overhardt told ESPN.com Thursday. “We’ve respectfully requested that the player had the opportunity to move forward in his career by having a fresh start.”

Coyotes GM Don Maloney in an email today:

“The CBA gives us certain rights to Turris and we are exercising our rights,” Maloney told ESPN.com in an email Thursday. “There will be a point in the future Turris will have the right to decide who he wants to play for and how much he will accept.

“He is not at this stage, given his age and experience. If he wants to play in the NHL this season, he will re-sign with us. We will not trade his rights under any circumstances and are prepared to live with the consequences if he decides to sit out this, and future, seasons.”

If Turris doesn’t sign by Dec. 1st, he can’t play this season.

  • Rob Longley via twitter: Ben Scrivens will back up Jonas Gustavsson tonight. James Reimer is still not ready. James Mirtle via twitter: Gustavsson called Reimer’s injury a concussion, which is not what the team has been saying. James Mirtle via twitter: Ron Wilson says that team doctors haven’t called Reimer’s injury a concussion, that he’s 90+%, and that they are just being cautious with him. David Alter via twitter: The Maple Leafs can’t put Reimer on the IR retroactively since it’s only been 5 days. The Leafs have used both their emergency call-ups for the year. Chris Johnston via twitter: Johnston notes the Leafs failure to sign a proven backup is coming into question with the injury to Reimer. James Mirtle via twitter: With Tim Connolly in the lineup, Nazem Kadri has been sent to the AHL.
  • Ian Mendes via twitter: Senators forward Peter Regin will be out 6 to 8 weeks rehabbing his shoulder, no surgery.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: League sources say there haven’t been any financial issues with the ownership situation in St. Louis. Meaning the Blues are not currently in need of the NHL’s assistance to make payroll etc.
  • Tim Wharnsby via twitter: “Gauthier’s firing of Pearn was a message to Martin. Pearn and Martin are close friends. They worked together for 10+ years in OTT + MTL.”
  • James Gordon via twitter: Senators lines: Greening-Spezza-Michalek, Foligno-DaC-Alfredsson, Daugavins-Smith-Neil, Condra-Konopka-Winchester
  • John Vogl via twitter: Jhonas Enroth will start in net for the Sabres tonight against the Blue Jackets. Mike Weber is the odd man out on the blueline.

Looking at legal action against Cherry … Crosby could be cleared for contact … Stars may need to add to get to floor … Kadri healing quickly

  • James Mirtle via twitter: Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan and Jim Thomson are “considering further recourse” against Don Cherry. “Cherry’s comments were … baseless and slanderous.” Josh Cooper via twitter: Stu Grimson: “Further recourse does include an investigation into what legal recourse might be available to this group.”
  • Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Rangers defenseman is still receiving treatment for a his headaches and likely won’t be with the team this week. Tortorella received word on Saturday that Staal was “feeling good.” Asked if he’s prepared for a long-term Staal absence, Tortorella said: “I don’t know if you prepare that way. We just – whoever’s out there practicing, we’re preparing. And if someday Marc comes in and he’s there, we’re gonna prepare him the best we can to play a game.”
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: So with Sean Avery’s salary cap number not counting against the Dallas Stars cap number while he’s on the AHL, it may require them to add someone to make sure they don’t fall below the cap floor. The new player they add may have to make $1.2 million or more. Winger Tomas Vincour is only at $800,000 so he may have to move to the AHL for a more expensive player. Some free agents GM Joe Nieuwendyk could look at: Mike Grier, John Madden, Sergei Samsonov, Steve Bernier, Chris Clark, and Michael Nylander.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund will be out for up to a month as he’ll be having arthroscopic surgery on both knees today. He’s already on the IR, and hasn’t skated since Sept. 29th. “I’m going to say four to six weeks, but it really depends on how he feels, so it could be before that,” Yzerman said. The Lightning already have 7 healthy defenseman on the roster so it’s unlikely they look to acquire someone.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Red Wings power play is 0 for 9 to start the season, so they’ll try Jiri Hudler on the wing during Thursday’s game against the Canucks.
  • Eric Stephenson of the OC Register: Recently acquired Kyle Cumiskey is expected to head to the Ducks AHL team. Goalie Jeff Deslauriers and winger Brian McGrattan need to clear waivers before they can head to Syracuse.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Leafs forward Nazem Kadri is recovering quickly, “The little bastard is back faster than I was led to believe,” Wilson said. Kadri suffered a knee injury in late September and may find himself playing for the Marlies for a bit to shed some rust. He was expected to be out 3 to 4 weeks, but is back on the ice after only 2.

Afternoon twitter notes involving Doughty, Crosby and a couple Pens, Schenn, Lombardi, Brodeur, Redden, Markov, Kesler and others

  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider posted a transcipt of a phone interview with Kings GM Dean Lombardi about Drew Doughty, and you should check it out in it’s entirety. A couple quick quotes from Lombardi:

“The problem we have, and we’re going to have to see how this evolves, is that generally with a player, you establish his market value and he signs up for 275 days of work. That was the one thing that changed during the CBA, that players were paid during training camp. So, quite frankly, it’s the way we have to approach this. Let alone missing a day or work, as well as getting behind your teammates in terms of preparation. It probably makes this a little more difficult, but you have to factor that in now. You’re not getting a full year’s work as of today.”

“Yeah. Well, it’s not that one [previous offer]. It doesn’t mean, certainly, that there isn’t going to be dialogue. The point is that missing days of work has to now factor into this negotiation. There’s no doubt in my mind that this kid is going to play here and play here a long time. But now, like I said, missing a day of work has to be factored into this. It’s no different than any other player. The lines of communication are certainly open. There was a cordial discussion last night, and that’s it.”

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: The $3.6 million for 5 years the Maple Leafs gave Luke Schenn is more than they wanted to spend. They could have signed Schenn for 3 years at around $3 million, but they wanted to a do a longer term. Jonas Siegel via twitter: Leafs GM Brian Burke said that they explored 2, 3, and 5 year contracts with Schenn. A 4  year deal was never discussed as it would take Schenn to unrestricted free agency.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils Martin Brodeur said the thought that this could be his last training camp has crossed his mind. Contract is up and retirement is a possibility … But …  Rich Chere via twitter: Brodeur added “Even (if) there was a work stoppage (after this season), I might be interested to keep going.”
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Dmitry asks Bob McKenzie when he thinks the Maple Leafs will start talking to Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin. Bob McKenzie doesn’t think that there is no rush, that Burke will want to see “their full body of work” during the season before they make any commitments.
  • Rich Chere via twitter: Steve Bernier said that he turned down a 2-way contract offer from other teams but decided to “risk everything” and take a tryout offer from the Devils.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Blue Jackets coach Arniel said that Prospal, Vermette, Brassard, Umberger are early candidates to be on the big line.
  • Marc Antoine Godin via twitter: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov: “I won’t be ready tomorrow but I will be ready one day.”. October 6th? “There’s always a chance.”
  • Mark Spector via twitter: Canucks coach Vigneault said that Ryan Keslser is “out indefinitely,” he won’t be skating when camp opens. Mason Raymond is also out indefinitely.
  • Don Brennan via twitter: Though Pascal Leclaire is not under contract with the Senators (or anyone else), but they are responsible for helping bring him back to health as he was injured while under contract with them.

Twitter notes on Raymond, Kesler, Winchester, Savard, Quick and the NJ Devils

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: It’s sounding like Canucks Mason Raymond may not be back mid-late November, and Ryan Kesler could be mid-November.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: If the Devils are for sale, it’s not a great time as the Coyotes, Blues, and Stars have been searching for a while for new owners. Mirtle points out that it’s not only the sunbelt teams that struggle, as the Islanders, Blue Jackets and Devils are all in tough right now.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador won’t be cleared by doctors until he takes his physical on Friday. He missed all of last season with a concussion.

Rangers lock up Boyle, Dubinsky and Callahan remain … Jackets looking at FA wingers, maybe Hemsky? Alzner talks continue … Yzerman – Purcell talks continue

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers locked up another one of their RFAs yesterday, signing Brian Boyle to a 3 year deal worth $5.1 million, a $1.7 million cap hit. Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky have both filed for salary arbitration. Dubinsky’s hearing is next Thrusday and the Rangers are expected to select a 2 year arbitration award. Dubinsky is scheduled to be a UFA in 2 years. Callahan would be a UFA after next season. Dubinsky and Callahan are expected to get between a $3.7 and $4.4 million arbitration award. The Rangers are looking for a veteran 3rd pair defenseman.
  • Steve Zipay of Newsday: The Rangers have about $11.2 million remaining, so there is plenty of room to get Dubinsky and Callahan signed. Both players are expected to sign multi-year contracts worth around $4 million per season.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Kristian Huselius had surgery yesterday to repair his torn pectoral muscle. GM Scott Howson will meet up with Huselius today, in between phone calls where he’ll be looking for a free agent winger.

“We’re going to be active,” Howson said. “We’re going to do our best to find somebody who can help us get through this stretch of games without (Huselius) – however long that may be.”

They will be seeking to sign someone to a 1 year deal worth $2 million or less. Some possibilities are: Cory Stillman, Vaclav Prospal, Brendan Morrison, Steve Bernier, Sergei Samsonov, J.P. Dumont, Marek Svatos and Jason Williams.

  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline wouldn’t be surprised if Kristian Huselius’ injury sparked talk on the long-whispered Ales Hemsky to Columbus deal.
  • Stephen Whyno via twitter: Karl Alzner’s agent in a text: “We are still talking and will continue the negotiations [yesterday].”
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times:  Teddy Purcell’s arbitration hearing is set for July 20th, but GM Steve Yzerman hopes to get a deal done before that. The sides are not far apart after they had a “good, long” conversation last night.

“I fully expect to see Teddy in the lineup in September and have a contract done,” Yzerman said. ”Whether it’s through the arbitration process or before that, we’ll have a contract in place next week.”

Selanne to make decision on next year around July 1st … Crawford-Hawks talks to wait … Blue Jackets could trade 1st round pick … Avalanche could target goalies

  • Anaheim Ducks via twitter: “Teemu Selanne told media [yesterday] that he’d like to decide on whether to play next season around July 1.”
  • Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford will be a RFA, and they will be waiting until after the season to discuss contract extension. “[General manager] Stan Bowman phoned me and we talked and I told him we are going to wait until the end of the season,” Gilles Lupien said in an  interview. Crawford is 29-15 with a 2.27 GAA and 4 shutouts.
  • Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp could skate this weekend, he’s missed the last 4 games with a knee injury. They’d like to get him into a game before the end of the season. David Bolland has missed 8 consecutive game with a concussion, no update on his progress.
  • Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: After being given a vote of confidence, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson, he’ll have plenty of cap space next year after they deal with their 4 RFA’s and 8 UFA’s. They could look at bringing in a quality defenseman and center. They could pull off a draft day trade.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If given the option to pick 1 free agent to go after, Portzline thinks the Blue Jackets should go after Ilya Bryzgalov. He’d likely cost $6 million a year, it’s not likely they they go after him though. Portzline would also be shocked if they don’t trade their 1st round pick this year. They only have 2 defenseman under contract for next year.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche will explore the FA goalie market this off-season, and thinks they should look at Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun if they are available. He also brings up the idea of trading their 1st round pick (Top 5) for a goalie like Cory Schneider (Van) or Steve Bernier (LA). The Avs could look at moving one of their centers as they are deep down the middle. Paul Stastny could be an option, and has a $6.6 million cap hit. Dater put the odds at more than 50-50 that they re-sign Brian Elliott. Dater on possibly trading the Avs 1st round pick (could be top 3): Raises the question of sending the 1st for Schneider or Bernier. What about for Roberto Luongo or even Jonathan Quick? The Avs could still get the Blues 1st round pick from this year if the Blues finish 11th or better. Free agents like Bryzgalov and Vokoun may not want to sign with another young team.
  • Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said that Jimmy Howard could be back in uniform tonight, and if not, he should be ready for Saturday.

Could Winnipeg support a team? Doan at least a week away … Bernier possible broken cheekbone, Burns to be suspended?

  • Toronto Sun: It’s been awhile since the Sun group posted an article on how Winnipeg can support an NHL team. Mario Lefebvre (Conference Board of Canada director – I have no idea what that means) says that Winnipeg, Quebec City and Hamilton all reach 4 things necessary to have a successful sports organization. “1) the size of the market; 2) the wealth of the market; 3) a sound corporate presence; 4) a level playing field.”
  • Craig Custance of the SportingNews: The Coyotes sent defensive prospect Oliver Ekman-Larsson to the minors yesterday, but it’s not expected to be a long stay. According to GM Don Maloney, “Rather than sit him in and out of the lineup, we just thought we should let him play in all situations in the [AHL].” “Whether it’s two weeks or two months, I don’t know,” he said. “He’s a good player for us. I think he’ll help us this year.”
  • Ron Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Filip Kuba will see how he feels this morning, and if he’s able to go. But as Brennan points out, he’s been close before without playing. Kuba was cleared last week by doctors, and in a roundabout way, questions is manhood. Other teammates are fighting through their injuries. Mike Fisher is battling through an upper-body injury.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Peter Schaefer will be a healthy scratch again tonight, and could find his days number with the Vancouver Canucks. He’s on a 2-way contract and could be sent to the minors.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: Steve Bernier of the Florida Panthers was taken to the hospital after being hit in the face by Brent Burns, who still had his stick in his hand. Bernier has a cut under his eye and possibly a broken cheekbone. After watching the below video, I’m sure the NHL will be taking a look at it.

Problems with Phoenix’s Potential New Owners? Leighton back in Philly? Forsberg Done for Good? Kings Showcasing Bernier?

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The Banks may not be willing to give the “Ice Edge” group the funds to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes for $160 million. Jeffery Vinik only paid about $100 million cash for the Tampa Bay Lightning. There was a bill proposed by Arizona legislature last month to create a special tax to help the arena cost, it fell through. A real-extate company was suspose to help the Ice Edge group financially pulled out.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Michael Leighton’s play in net may have helped save the Flyers season, but it hasn’t gotten Flyers talking to him about a contract extension yet. The Flyers have had a tendency to go the lost cost route in net, so Leighton might appeal to them rather than going after higher priced goalies such as Marty Turco, Evgeni Nabokov, Vesa Toskala, Dan Ellis, and Antero Niittymaki.
  • Kevin Allen via Twitter: After Modo’s playoff loss Peter Forsberg said “this might have been my last game.”
  • Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Some points from Garth Snow’s interview with MSG Network. Snow expects Rick DiPietro to play again this year (I wonder how long it will be before he’s hurt again). Snow expects to test the free agent market out, and will be looking for a couple defenseman (Makes you wonder why they traded Andy Sutton in the middle of a playoff run, especially when they are pretty thin on the blueline now).
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Ian White hopes to re-sign long term with the Calgary Flames this summer. “I would hope they’d want to keep me around here,” said White, of Steinbach, Man.”I love being out west. I love playing for Calgary. I love everything about this organization. I’d be honoured to be able to stick around here for a few more years.”
  • Helene Elliot of the LA Times: Jonathan Bernier will most likely make the start for the LA Kings tonight as Jonathan Quick will miss the game as he’s awaiting the birth of his first child. Kings backup, Erik Ersberg, hasn’t played in a month but coach Terry Murray wants to see Bernier play. “I want to see him. I know he’s had a great year, one of the best in all of the goaltenders that are outside of the NHL, and this might be an opportunity for me to get a look at him, for the team, and for him to come up and play,” Kings Coach Terry Murray said Thursday. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Kings were showcasing Bernier, especially if they feel Quick is their goalie of the future. Quick is signed for another 2 years.
  • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Steve Bernier of the Vancouver Canucks will be out for 4-6 weeks after having sports hernia surgery yesterday.
